Member review of Clearwire Wireless - BroadbandReports.com

I live in South Philly, and clearwire has covered my house front with pamphlets, thingies that hang on door knob, and mail for several months. They say that Philly is going to have great coverage by their product. I called, talked, bought wireless (a ...

Broadband Vs Dsl Questions asked

Voting Question: What Allows for Fast DSL Speeds When Far From C/O?

We're looking at office space for a very small company (currently 2 employees; looking to grow to 8-10 over next 2 years). As we're an online intensive business, affordable broadband is a VERY important deciding factor in selecting office space. We know if we get this wrong, it's like the difference between $1,200/year vs. $5,000+/year in overhead. In looking for offices, we've run into 2 nearly identical situations, in towns about 20 miles apart, where AT&T and/or other DSL providers (MegaPath, NewEdge, SpeakEasy, Nuvox, etc.) are promising VASTLY different available DSL speeds. In both of these situations, the offices are pretty far from the C/O (in one case about 2 miles, in another case about 3-1/2 miles). What is the technology that allows AT&T and certain DSL providers to deliver DSL at distances pretty far from C/O? And how can we confirm whether or not the DSL provider or AT&T will actually be able to deliver BEFORE getting on the hook for an office lease and moving in? What would YOU ask for from the DSL provider, BEFORE signing the office lease? more

Resolved Question: SAS quarantines Trojans - now blank screen at Startup WinXP?

I'm panicking. Ever since I removed the old Avast and downloaded new Avast (also tried Avira) into Download Files folder, then tried to run either Avast or Avira, a message displayed re: Can't install due to corrupted files. Antispywares such as Malbytes (or was it SAS) kept remaining "locked-up" and even CTL/ALT/DEL plus EndNow wouldn't work. The only way I could shut the system would be to turn off the power on surge protector (even the power-off button failed to work). So I tried Super AntiSpyware. I downloaded the latest definitions from SAS. SAS then picked up 4 Trojans & asked if I wish to quarantine the corrupted files (which were in the Windows system). I chose YES. The corrupted files now in quarantine are: (1) c:\windows\system32\lowsec (2) ditto\lowsec\local.ds (3) ditto\lowsec\user.ds (4) ditto\lowsec\user.ds.lll Ever since then, I had further problems. First Win XP stating it cannot reinstall, and asking me if I want to restore system to the point prior to the problem. I chose YES. Ever since that, XP will not start up except in Safe Mode. It won't startup Normally (totally blank screen). I don't know what to do now. I shiver at even the thought of complete reinstallation, since that's always been a horrible ordeal for me, even when I was finally able to reach the Microsoft guy years ago to help walk me thru it. Just dealing with the various personnel until reaching someone halfway knowledgeable took hours and hours & endless sweat. I don't want to go thru that again. P.S. please bear with me. I'm on very slow dialup, and using my other [tiny thinkpad] computer which seems to be suffering chronically with very slow connection problems (i.e. the double-computer icon at lower right of screen is always chronically with a red-X (local area connection unplugged). I've no idea why, but maybe that's why most of the time i have trouble getting connected on this comjputer. Also note: I'm in a Catch22 (or maybe catch33 or catch44) - like this: I'm ill from EMF sensitivity due to overexposure in no small part due to slow dialup, but also many years before that of overexposure to EMFs of word processing on CRTs etc. I missed the boat with getting good deal on DSL/broadband. Verizon's good deals of Dry Loop DSL / locked in for life / seem to be over. Anyway, since my system was always so problematic, why should I have bothered with seeking broadband? And why bother getting another system (like maybe Linux or whatever) if I don't have broadband anyway, and I already got EMF illness due to very-slow dialup causing overexposure to computer EMFs? I doubt anyone can relate to my Catch 44, but that's how it is, and that's why I'm always scrambling 1000 paces behind everyone else. There were other [personal] factors also distracting me from keeping up. It has built up to crisis proportions, since Internet by now seems to be a necessity vs. luxury, so i'm at wits end how best to extract myself & catch up with the world, without going broke.EMPHASIS ONCE AGAIN: I'd appreciate answer other than "clean reinstall". Please see my original request, for further detail why. more

Resolved Question: Can I have the truth behind DSL VS. Cable speeds?

I have AT&T with up to 6.0MPS. I watch (or try to) NBA Broadband, League Pass. Sometimes during prime time it jerks the motions and many times the picture freezes. I just installed a D-link N router and adapter. It seems to have helped some, but the problem still will occur. I went from about 3AM of 68mps received on the status bar and 5.1 MPS dsl speed check, to 54mps on status bar, and down to 2.66 on independent and at&t speed check at 6PM. Does the DSL get worse at night because of traffic? I can get local cable internet with a constant 3.0mps. Should I switch, or is this type of slowing also going to occur during prime time with cable. I am reading way too many different answers on here.Just a little confusion. I guess the Mbs, and Mps are not what I meant to write. My cable is in a small town (around 5000). Customers, I'd guess around 3200. Internet probably less than 1000? But it uses fiber optic, if that helps. I swear it's the dsl that's causing this.?? more

Resolved Question: NBA Broadband Pass???

Can you tell me about what is good or bad about it? I mainly want to know, what does the picture look like? What about my having 3.0mbs on cable vs. 6.0 on DSL? Is this about the same as some of those bad free downloads that are grainy and keep getting interrupted? more

Resolved Question: Broadband vs DSL routers? non-wireless?

ok so we have just a regular 4 port dsl router. Now our connection is split up between the comp and the xbox. the connection keeps dropping and so we called the cable guy out. he tells us that its because we have a dsl router and they are broadband. we went to look for one at best buy and they said they don't sell them. I was wondering is there a difference between broadband and dsl for routers?to blamay22... i had best buy check the records to see if they carried and they dont ( im not a fool). also the one i have is a linksysand i also checked the linksys website and they dont even have a non-wireless broadband router. dsl yes broadband no. my question was is there is really difference between the two. more

Resolved Question: Alltel Wireless Internet Cards vs Hughes Net?

OK, I was looking at Hughes Net for a really long time because Cable and DSL with normal companies was out of the question due to living on a farm in the middle of Michigan. But I heard that satellite internet, like Hughes Net, is really bad for playing online games because of the lag. So, now I'm thinking about the alltel wireless internet USB things that you just plug into the USB port on your computer. It's the same price, so it looks pretty good. I just have a few questions: I have alltel cell phones, and I get like 4 bars at the computer, so if I put the USB into my desktop will I be getting really good reception from the alltel tower (only about 20 miles south of my house)? Like somewhere in the 1-3 Mbps? Will it be better than Hughes Net? I would get the UTStarcom UM175 USB wireless thing. Under the map, I would have access to broadband (EVDO Rev O) Thanks. All I'm looking for is something that is faster than 56K dial-up but not as horrible as satellite internet. more

Resolved Question: Verizon DSL vs. Comcast (Boston , MA)?

Hi, I live in Boston and I am thinking about switching from Comcast (cable connection I think its called Broadband..) to verizon internet service. The main reason why I am want to switch is because Comcast recently started blocking Limewire, which I use frequently. However when I spoke to a sales lady at Comcast she assured me that they are not blocking Lime or any peer to peer sites (is she lying?). Anyway, the thing is Verizon Fios is not available yet in my area so I would be switching to a DSL service, which I am told is much slower but it is also much cheaper (about 1/2 as much). Is it worth to switch to a slower service if I HAVE to have Limewire and am I going to be totally frustrated with a DSL connection??? Thanks...J more

Resolved Question: DSL vs Cable broadband?

i'm switching from cable broadband to dsl... how huge of a performance downfall is going to happen? the switch is happening in 1 week from now and i'm so worried that video streaming and downloads will slow down so much that i'm now starting a download spree/panic.......also, would youtube vids load longer now in dsl connection??? pls. help more

Resolved Question: wireless router vs wired router?

Resolved Question: AT&T DSL vs. broadband internet?

Resolved Question: Need help in choosing effective Hi-Speed Internet...?

In a bit of a bind here...DSL and FIOS are not available in my area, so I need a bit of help choosing an alternative. Here's what I found as options... > RCN and their broadband cable service > Comcast and their broadband cable service > Earthlink and their broadband w / comcast broadband cable I'm not interested in any other services added on, since my current satellite provider and phone service are all right, and I intend to keep them. Now, I think RCN is the better choice, because they offer faster speeds than Comcast (10 mbps vs. 5 mbps at max), but I don't seem entirely convinced, what with RCN having a shaky business history. Suggestions?Umm, let me just say this again. VERIZON DOES NOT OFFER IN MY AREA. No DSL and no FIOS. Clear? Okay, good. And second, RCN is on the list. Kapil, you forgot to click the image.
