Resolved Question: AOL Broadband Silver?
Does anyone here have it? How much do you pay and what speeds do you get for it. It used to cost £9.99 a month for us and now suddenly we have been charged £17.99. They only warned us about this by email. Has anyone else experienced this. Hopefully will be able to change quickly as I don't want to pay £17.99 for up to 2mb connection speeds.

hi,
I am currently on AOL silver (which they dont do any more unless u were allreayd on it) for that i get unlimited broadband..but in the last few weeks it cuts off every few days for an hour or so. Same with my sister and friends who are on AOL. Anyway i was looking around and see alot of 'unlimited' broadband providers but they say about the fair use policy. I understand what it is BUT im a little worried. in our family we allways leave the pc on even through the night sometimes, we download music (4-5 songs a week from itunes) we play alot of internet games, and look/shop online. download a film once a week.. would i end up getting cut off under the fair use policy? Or are they just talking about ppl who download film after film after film!! can any one help??p.s there are also odd times i download large patches for games which is like 2Gb a month

Also, will it increase the speed and improve the connectivity as I need a laptop to have full connectivity on the network too?

I have a DSL modem, and have AOL 9.0 silver broadband. At first, when i would connect to the internet, it was somewhere between 7-8 MBPS, which was fine. Then today, it just slowed down to 3.7 MBPS. I recently downloaded patches from official sites for games, latest drivers from nVidia's website. Could this be causing the problem, or is there something else? Suggestions please, thanks!

I have a PC which is currently connected to AOL Broadband silver. I have bought a laptop, so now want to set up wireless internet. I bought a Netgear wireless router. When trying to set this up, I go through the setup wizard and get as far as all the bits on the router lighting up, but then I get a message telling me that the PC cannot find the router. My PC is in a different room to my phone outlet, so I cannot use the phone cable supplied. Because of this, I have tried setting this up via my laptop using the cable supplied. This does find the router and connects to the internet, then it asks me for my internet account details. I put in my AOL screen name and password, but it then tells me it cannot find antything. It gave me the option of connecting directly to the router?, which I do using the default username and password supplied. This logs in ok, but then I get a message saying that Internet Explorer has requested to close, it closes and restarts and I'm back to square one! Help?

Arghh I hate AOL. How come they are unlike any other broadband ISP in terms of the internet being already connected. For AOL broadband silver I have to open up the software then click connect. So it's basically like dial up but faster :/ it's a nightmare though. I hate having to use their software, it lags my computer. Is there any way of not using the software? I don't have wireless or anything. Just a standard BT broadband modem. Thanks x

I have been with AOL for over 12 months using a wired connection on the Silver Broadband Package, and after some recent enquires I found out I was entitled to a free ‘Netgear DG834G 54Mbps Wireless ADSL Modem Firewall Router with 4-port 10/100 switch’. The wireless router also came with an AOL easy set up installation CD.
I received the wireless router last week. It was up to me to buy a wireless adaptor so I got the ‘Netgear WG111 Wireless 54Mbps USB 2.0 Adapter’. Besides connecting my desktop, I plan to connect my new laptop; it has Intel Centrino technology, I know it works wireless because I have been using it on campus.
I plan to connect both my desktop and my laptop wirelessly.
My questions are these:
Q1. Will I have to uninstall AOL and my current wired modem (BT Voyager 105 USB ADSL Modem) on my desktop, thus start afresh when I install the Netgear wireless router? If so, how does one do this?Q2. Can I connect my desktop to the Netgear router with wires (have a wired connection) but still connect my laptop wirelessly?
Q3. AOL sent me (on request) an AOL 9.0 VR installation CD for my laptop (as it runs on Windows Vista), once I have connected my laptop to my wireless network will I THEN install the CD? Would it allow me access the internet if I used Internet Explorer and not install the AOL CD on my laptop?
Any other tips and wisdom would be much appreciated (I’d be eternally grateful!)

...using my laptop which came with a built-in-already-set-up wireless modem (I only know this because I was able to connect to my Mum's wireless connection the day after I got my laptop)
Anyways, at home I was only able to get onto the internet with the modem cable plugged into the laptop and it was saying limited/no connection until my PC genius friend worked out it was an incorrect wireless IP address or something like that.
After he did this, it worked wirelessly, displaying excellent connectivity and signal strength.
About 3 weeks ago I re-installed my laptop after a virus, and re-installed my router and now its displayed excellent wireless internet connection and signal strength but will only actually display the web page with the modem cable plugged in, otherwise it tells me the page cannot be displayed.
Does anyone have any ideas?? As it is quite pointless having a laptop if I have to plug my internet in!!

If anyone knows then tell me any suggestions, because I just want to know if I buy a wireless router, I can get wireless, I am a computer technician, I should know all this but this is the one thing I don't, lol
