Alma webcam courtesy of ISP Management

Welcome to Webcams Across Michigan. These live webcams come to you courtesy of many different organizations. By clicking on the locations, you can see full-size images and learn more about each webcam.

In most cases the images are updated every few minutes. If you don't see an updated image, try reloading the page (Internet Explorer users press F5 on your keyboard; Netscape users hold down Shift and click on Reload). If an image is old or does not load, the problem is with the organization's website. Many problems clear themselves up within a few minutes. To determine when the image was last updated, be sure to check the time-stamp on each image. Some of the cameras operate only during daylight hours and are turned off at night.

You can see all the images at once by using the high-bandwidth Webcams Across Michigan.

Wi-Fi piggybackers 'fess up

More than half (54 percent) of computer users admit to using someone else's Wi-Fi without permission, research reveals.

Many internet-enabled homes fail to secure their wireless connection properly with passwords and encryption, allowing others to steal internet access rather than pay an ISP, according to IT security company Sophos, which carried out the 560-strong survey.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said borrowing Wi-Fi internet access may feel like a victimless crime, but it deprives ISPs of revenue.

And if you hop onto your next door neighbour's wireless broadband connection to download movies and music from the net, chances are you are also slowing down their internet access and impacting on their download limit, Cluley added.

A Librarian's Worst Nightmare

When it does battle on the Web, Google rarely loses. Last year's closure of Google Answers, however, marked a rare setback for the search giant. An even bigger shock is that Yahoo! succeeded where Google failed. Yahoo! Answers—a site where anyone can post a question in plain English, including queries that can't be answered by a traditional search engine—now draws 120 million users worldwide, according to Yahoo!'s internal stats. The site has compiled 400 million answers, all searchable in its archives. According to the Web tracking company Hitwise, Yahoo! Answers is the second-most-visited education/reference site on the Internet after Wikipedia.

The blockbuster success of Yahoo! Answers is all the more surprising once you spend a few days using the site. While Answers is a valuable window into how people look for information online, it looks like a complete disaster as a traditional reference tool.

Alleged Russian crime hosting service folds tent

ST. PETERSBURG-BASED web-hosting service the Russian Business Network (RBN) is gone but maybe not permanently. This week it turned in most of its allocated Internet addresses after being implicated in nefarious hacking.

Like in 2005 when somebody took advantage of a previously unknown security flaw in Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser to install keystroke-logging software on computers when users visited legitimate Web sites which had been hacked. The keylogging software then sent data back BRN's network.

Then in autumn 2006, insecurity experts saw RBN sites implicated in an attack against Hostgator, a large web-hosting provider in Florida. In May 2007, more insecurity experts reported a large percentage of the sites belonging to Ipower Inc., one of the web's biggest inexpensive web site hosting firms, had been hijacked with code that silently redirected visitors to malicious RBN sites.
