BT eyeing Tiscali buy?
BT is eyeing up the UK division of Tiscali with a view to an acquisition, according to press reports. A report in The Times has fingered BT as a suitor for the Italian ISP - despite Tiscali's insistence its UK unit is not up for sale. BT declined to comment on "rumour and speculation". This is not the first time a suitor has been linked with Tiscali UK - back in April a Sunday Telegraph report suggested Vodafone had identified it as a possible takeover target. In separate broadband news, media reports suggest Orange has pulled out of the bidding to buy AOL's UK unit, leaving BSkyB and Carphone Warehouse - the two shortlisted suitors - to fight it out. AOL and Orange declined to comment on the reports. An AOL spokesman added that "negotiations are ongoing with a number of parties".
O2 broadband tops comparison poll
The poll measures key satisfaction areas for customers, including speed, reliability and customer service, asking users to score each provider. Thinkbroadband.com compares services from all the main ISPs and when compared with AOL (UK), Orange, TalkTalk Broadband, BT Broadband and Sky Broadband, O2 Broadband scored the highest in each of the three categories, with 74 per cent, 72 per cent and 79 per cent for speed, reliability and customer service respectively. In a separate survey conducted by Intrepid Research, 100 per cent of customers that switched from Orange and PlusNet thought the O2 service was "better" than their previous service. 86 per cent of ex-AOL customers and 85 per cent of ex-Virgin Media customers thought the same. Overall, 81 per cent of customers questioned were very satisfied with the service and likely to recommend it to their friends.
Computerworld Readers Rate Verizon FiOS Internet Service 'Head and ...
NEW YORK, Aug. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Verizon FiOS Internet -- delivered over the nation's most advanced, all-digital fiber-optic network straight to customers' doors -- has been rated No. 1 in a national ISP survey. Computerworld magazine reports that the results of its recent survey of more than 1,100 broadband users of the nation's top six broadband services show that Verizon FiOS Internet stands "head and shoulders above the rest." "There's little doubt as to the best U.S. broadband ISP, according to our readers -- Verizon FiOS wins by a wide margin," the magazine reports. Verizon FiOS was the only broadband service that scored first in all eight of the survey's categories: overall satisfaction, connection reliability, download speed, upload speed, customer service, technical support, value and e-mail service.
ISPs fail on LLU migrations
BroadbandChoices.co.uk have called on industry regulator Ofcom needs to take action to ensure ISPs give customers correct information when inquiring about changing providers. But 46 per cent of call centre operators which were called by the comparison site gave incorrect advice when questioned about obtaining a migration authorised code (MAC) concerning moving to a local loop unbundled (LLU) provider. There are more than three million unbundled telephone lines in the UK and rapidly growing. The process of LLU involves communications providers, such as TalkTalk or Sky, installing their own equipment in telephone exchanges, meaning that they do not have to rely on BT's existing infrastructure. .
BT and NTL get ISP wooden spoon for satisfaction
How much do you love your internet service provider? If you're a customer of BT or NTL, you're most likely to be suffering from a lack of warm and fuzzy feelings towards your provider. A study by utilities comparison website uSwitch.com, which examined the relative popularity of the UK's ISPs, found that PlusNet is the nation's favourite, with BT and NTL picking up the wooden spoon for the largest percentage of unsatisfied customers. All in all, it seems the British are a broadband happy bunch. According to the survey of 16,000, 92 per cent of PlusNet customers are satisfied with their ISP, while BT and NTL - with the fewest satisfied customers - still notched up decent levels of satisfied users, with 81 and 82 per cent respectively. But what makes broadband users happy with their service? The research found that broadband Britain rates connection quality and reliability - rather than price - as the most important elements.
