Vodafone 'toys with Tiscali buy'

Speculation is growing that Vodafone is preparing to buy one of the UK's fixed-line telecommunications operators.

The Sunday Telegraph reported that Vodafone has identified Tiscali as a possible takeover target, as part of a push to expand its product offering. Bulldog, Cable & Wireless's broadband ISP, is said to be another option, despite its track-record of poor customer service. Vodafone described the reports as "speculation".

Vodafone currently just offers mobile services - unlike rivals such as Orange, which is aggressively pushing a strategy where it offers both fixed-line and mobile services. With convergence such a hot issue in today's telecoms market, Vodafone is under growing pressure to become more than just a mobile player.

Last month, some analysts argued that the company should even consider bidding for BT.

Surge in encrypted torrents blindsides record biz

Exclusive The legal crackdown and publicity blitz aimed at people who share music, videos and software online may be having an unintended consequence for the troubled record industry. The number of file-sharers disguising their BitTorrent activity with encryption is skyrocketing.

Figures from a large UK ISP obtained by The Register show that the portion of BitTorrent traffic encrypted by file-sharers has risen 10-fold in the last 12 months, from four to 40 per cent.

Yahoo! pockets Zimbra for $350m

Zimbra offers branded email with calendar and mobile features as well as the ability to work offline. The company has more than 200 educational, business and ISP partners, including Comcast, which offer branded email service to roughly nine million subscribers.

What differentiates Zimbra are the "Zimlet": web service mash-ups that offer richer functionality in email. For instance, people can simply mouse over airline flight information in an email to check on flight status. Users are also able to track FedEx deliveries and get maps, stocks and other information in email too.

The Zimbra acquisition, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, and Yahoo!'s $300m purchase earlier this month of display ad provider Blue Lithium are an indication of the future direction of the company as it redefines its place in the market, says Brad Garlinghouse, senior vice president for communications and communities.
