Open Question: Why do online video players continually freeze up and/or slow progressively as I watch?
Netflix videos always start out great, but every 5-20 minutes it will stop and re-buffer saying that my internet connection has slowed and that it's adjusting my connection to prevent further delays. The online player on Fox's website is supposed to self-adjust, but it doesn't, it just sticks every few seconds for a few seconds and then plays a bit, unless I pause it & let the buffer fill up, then play it til it's empty and repeat. Hulu.com has the same story as fox. Fox's FAQ states * Processor: AMD or Intel Single Core or greater * Operating System: Windows XP (Home, Media Center and Professional with Service Packs and all Microsoft Updates), Windows Vista (Home Basic, Home Premium, Business, Ultimate or Enterprise editions) * RAM: 256 MB minimum (512 MB recommended) * Video Card: 32 MB minimum (128 MB recommended) * Browser: Internet Explorer (version 6 and 7) or Mozilla Firefox (version 2.0 and 3.0). * Screen Resolution: 800 x 600 minimum (1280 x 1024 recommended) * Internet Connection: Broadband/High Speed (DSL, Cable, T1, etc.). Dial-up connections are not supported. Hulu states * Adobe Flash Player 10.0.22 or above * Internet Explorer 6.0 or above, Firefox 2.0 or above, or Safari 3.0 or above * Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or later, Macintosh OS X 10.4 or above, or Linux * JavaScript and Cookies must also be enabled In addition, you will need an internet connection with sufficient bandwidth. Our videos stream at 480Kbps or 700Kbps, and we'll adjust our stream based on your bandwidth, but we recommend a downstream bandwidth of 1,000Kbps or higher for the smoothest playback experience. I have windows XP SP3 Intel Pentium 4 CPU 1.80 GHz 512 MB of Ram Video card 64 mb Firefox 3.5.7 Screen resolution 1280x1024 speedtest.net says my download speed is 1.42 Mb/s and upload 5.45 Mb/s the speed test link on my ISP's website says 7847 kbps download and 12917 kbps upload YES I know it's bizarre that my upload is way bigger than my download but it's been this way for a long time, I didn't switch them. So, My question is, does anybody know how I can smooth out my video playing?http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html says that my flash player is the most current version moreVoting Question: does anyone else feel technology has made life worse and more frustrating?
I am starting to hate technology in sooo many ways. 1)Thing were so much more efficent without mobile phones, people were always on time and if they were not it was considered a personnel insult, now people can be constantly be late and because they have the tech they think what the hell what difference does it make if that person has to wait an extra 10 20 30 mins! for me! (and it was cheaper as you didn't have to pay monthly fees) 2) generally service is crap now in every way, whenever I have a problem I have to spend 30 minutes talking to a machine when all I want is to speak to a human and sort the problem out in two minutes. 3) too many pieace of technology are faulty and require to great a service and do not work as advertised or implied e.g. 20mb broadband is in reality 2mb because you dont live in the centre of the city next to the Business Headquaters. 4) now they are talking about turning off the Tv analoge system and having digital signals only, which are even worse, in some part of the county when there is bad weather you can lose the signal for hours through digital, god forbid there is a national emergency. technology is only there for profitering in my opinion as it never makes life simpler only more complicated when it goes wrong..... which is regularly when you add all of you technology together. anyone else find this or am i just being silly? moreVoting Question: Which school is better for a Bachelors of Science in Information Technology and network design? i live in australia. currently my internet provider (i think that's what it's called) is bigpond. it is basically dial up speed (25kb/s or something?). there are 4 computers that are used through out the day at my house since my mum runs her own business at home. i want to change to tpg - the 120gb plan for $50 a month and that internet speed is 512k as opposed to my current 25kb/s speed. currently we are paying 60 dollars for crappy internet! but what i'm trying to ask is, what would it take to use up all 120gb? my mum thinks it will all get used up just from loading files which i'm guessing are less than 1mb each. i don't know how to convince her to change our internet to a faster and cheaper one. moreResolved Question: Charter Communications broadband slowness?
My Charter Broadband service slowed to a dial-up-like crawl last month. After much useless telephone support and swapping out my router I determined that my leased modem was broken. The telephone technician said that these thing happen because I leave it on all the time and it "gets hot." (With a broken modem I would think my problems would not intermittent though) I went to Best Buy and bought a Motorola modem and I was back in business. Now, it's happening again. Did my new modem get too hot?? Does anybody else have intermittent problems with Charter Broadband speeds going way down? Is there a way to tell if it's a system problem before doing a bunch of troubleshooting? Does anybody really turn off their modem when they're not using it? moreVoting Question: Help me turn this to simple english?

I am training to become an electrician, I am having to buy tools (hand tools / books, etc) can I claim for these even though I am not qualified yet, (as they are assets to the company), and if thats the case, can I create a website, and then claim my broadband connection as a tool? I am hoping to be certified by xmas 2010?? Hopefully!! Surely this could all be classed as 'business start up fees'?? Lastly, the course costs £110 pcm, can I claim for this also? moreVoting Question: My friend is on my mobile plan, and the bill was due 1/17. Should I suspend the service or contact the person?
My friend and I haven't spoken to each other in nearly two weeks, after a petty disagreement. I attempted to reach out to the person several times with no luck. Minus the personal issue going on, we still have financial business that needs to be resolved. I emailed my friend a bill reminder a week before the mobile broadband bill was due and received no response back. The bill is due the same time every month, so it's not like the person isn't aware. Should I give my friend a grace period of additional day or two to pay the bill or call Verizon and temporarily suspend the service? I'm trying to be patient with my friend, but I'm going to allow my credit to suffer either. moreVoting Question: Help Choosing A Good Comparison Website Name?

I'm trying to get this rubbish router to connect to my BT broadband but it won't. It was previously connected to BT business broadband which required a user name and password to be entered in the connection settings for it to connect, whereas standard broadband needs no such authentication. However, when I try to remove the user name and password from the box, the router politely informs me that a user name and password and mandatory, thus I can't wipe them out and get connected. Anyone got any ideas? moreResolved Question: Currently, what would be the best wireless router for me to get?
I have a cable broadband connection, and also the landline with Virgin Media. I think they call it the `M` package. When i contacted Virgin, they said i should upgrade to the `L` package, then they would send me a wireless router (worth £40!!), and i would pay an extra £1.75 a month on my bill. But, the person, i spoke to was so hard to understand. :((. So, would you recommend i went with upgrading my package with Virgin, and other than the router, what would i really gain from it? Or is it better just to got and buy one from PC World, pay a one off payment and that`s it. I have just bought a Dell Inspiron laptop, and this router business, is all new to me. Lol. :))English through and through - No, i tried that and only got 3 answers. But, i`m being more specific in this question. moreResolved Question: Business Broadband for Home?
Is there any reason why I couldn't/shouldn't get business broadband for home use? I was thinking of getting Tiscali's business lite package (£11 a month) which offers 24Mb download speeds and unlimited useage, this seems like a better deal than many home broadband packages Any known issues?judging from their website, the don't have issues with it, in fact they state that they aim their lite package at "home workers" moreResolved Question: which broadband connection is best for running my own web hosting business in UK?
I need a static IP with high upload bandwidth moreResolved Question: is alistair darling as thick as a short plank or is it a ploy or sop to appease the voters?
I n his plan to put a 50% tax on bankers bonuses alistair darling said hedge fund managers. and people on guaranteed bonuses would be exempt. As for those who do not fall into that category darling has also given them a loophole by stating that the tax is on bonuses drawn on by 5th april 2010. So all they have to do not to pay the tax is to wait till april before collecting their bonuses. There is no getout clause whatsoever on his descision to charge an extra 0.5% on national insurance payments, or on the fact that vat will will rise back up to 17.5% on jan 1st 2010. And why should land line telephones be taxed just to increase the speed of broadband mainly for the benefit of big business. It all goes to show that labour has become or is becoming just like the tories, and that the pair of them dont deserve our votes in the general election. moreResolved Question: Is this a good Gaming computer?

Networking Problem Internet is a magnificent medium to find solutions for your PC problem. I got help from it on numerous occasions and I am really thankful to the technology for it. However, despite of asking many times on many forums and trying everything given on the internet, my networking experience has been a nightmare so far. In 2007 I first tried to connect two PCs through LAN wired router, both PCs were using windows XP and guess what, my first try was a success but it was a matter of time when I realised that it was not more than just beginner’s luck because since then I’ve tried countless times but it never happened again. Now let me go into the detail. I’m using two P4 PCs with Windows XP professional, both have LAN built-in to the mother board. I have Broadband internet connection which can be used at one PC at a time. Both PCs can connect to the internet without any problem but when I try to connect them to each other, Ping request gives request denied. The only change since the first successful try I remember of is the use of Avast Antivirus, at that I time I had McAfee installed but I stopped avast antivirus and tried again with no success. Here is the list of things I did to setup networking on my computers. 1.All the wires are connected properly; I am sure about this because they both can connect to internet. 2.I ran the Setup for Home or small business netwrk in XP. 3.In PC-A I gave it IP address 192.168.10.1 subnetmask 255.255.255.0 and in PC-B I gave it IP address 192.168.10.2 subnet mask 255.255.255.0. 4.Enabled Netbios over TCP/IP 5.Disable firewall 6.Disabled avast antivirus 7.Workgroup of both PCs is MSHOME 8.Following services necessary for networking are running Server, Workstation and Computer Browser. (Please note that other services related must also be running because both PCs can connect to internet). 9.File sharing is on With all these things done, I cannot still get even a ping reply. I did the same in 2008 but at that time I was able to ping the computers and could not share the files because I could not access the PCs and kept on getting Unreachable message. This time around I cannot even ping the computers. Please please help me Muhammad Ali moreResolved Question: Wireless internet solution?

I have a BT business hub, and there can be 3 or 4 computers, including the PS3 connected wirelessly at anyone time. I use my computer for work and when someone is doing something over the network, like streaming video or playing games my broadband performance suffers. I would like to know if I can give my computer priority to get what it needs, even at the expense of the other networked computers. Thanks, Ben. moreVoting Question: who do you email for owner of dell computers in usa and what email for usa unsolveable issue?
I have an M1530notebook from dell, 10 hours on it. One year old. It crashed feb. 25, 2009. Dell support expects you to sit there for hours at a time while troubleshooting. I have lost three jobs, my business I was making alot of money at failed. They wouldn't even help troubleshoot, so after nearly a year of calling them complaining, they finially started to troubleshoot. I do not have 50 hours a week for them to have me sit there on the phone talking to some fool in India. They won't let me take it to a shop and fix it in one day unless I pay for it, so either I loose more money from working staying home on the phone all day, or pay for it myself when I have paid over $600.00 for warranties on this machine. I also have an xps410. For three years, they "troubleshooted", sent out broken parts over and over, my hard drive crashed 4 times, the media card 3 times, video card 3 times, error messages, lost files, cannot use any of the files and programs I bought totalling 1998.57 which was paid in a year with no interest. I bought the $600.00 warranty for this as well. They sent out 3 mother boards as well, and all three were dead on arrival. The tech here called them and gave them heck. I'm sitting here with a dell office and even my dell printer I paid over $350.00 for in middle 2008 is wireless and will not print off the computer, nothing, and dell won't fix it, won't send anybody out and won't pay for me to fix it asap at Best Buy in one day. They won't fix or pay for anything. But they are the first to take money for the bill every 3rd of the month. I'm frustrated and want to talk to an executive here in the states about this issue. I work and sell electronics, all kinds, and will never try to sell a dell because they are crap. They want to send me a referbished one, which is somebodies junk that was returned and they "fixed it" However when they have sent parts to me already and every part has been broke and returned, DOA, How can I trust them? Would you? I have lost over $30,000.00 this year because my work is online, jobs are reporting on line. My DSL costs $35.00 a month, and I didn't even have internet so I had to purchase a blackberry from sprint to get messages and reply to. I have two job offers right now and cannot communicate with them, open attachements. My business went down the tubes, my jobs I was making $16.00 an hour with both went down the tubes (fired) because of lack of getting my work in to the client. All because of Dell. I ordered broadband on both computers. They didn't contact me, they just put extra warranties on both models instead of broadband and then said I didn't have enough money to pay for broadband, especially on the notebook M1530. I have 10 hours of work on. Both Dell computers crashed Feb. 25, 2009. I will never buy another dell and I'm telling everybody, buyer beware of dell. They promise everything in sales dept. however if you think you are calling Texas, you are really calling India and they want to "troubleshoot" for as long as you sit on the phone. One week I spent on the phone with them over 50 hours and still had a broken computer. They sent out parts that were dead, broken when installed by their tech. I have spent a total of $1200.00 in warranties to fix these computers and they are broke, including the computer. If you ever purchase a computer do it at Best Buy and get the warranty there and the "geek squad" warranty. You could pour water on it, spill I mean, accidentally drop it do what ever to it. Accidents happan. Take it back to the Best Buy store and they will either fix the computer or give you a brand new one within 1 day. I have been fighting with Dell nearly 3 years between 2 computers and they will not give you a phone number to call anybody except their troubleshooting dept. No email for help and you always get a different person that can barely speak english every time, so what the other person did the next person is already lost, which takes hours to get them to understand what is wrong. I want corporate and tell them in the United States. I have already turned this over to the Ks. BT has called for an end to the "free ride" it says video websites such as the BBC iPlayer and YouTube enjoy on its network. The telecoms group, which was accused last week of "throttling" iPlayer and youtube performance at peak times, spoke publicly for the first time yesterday about how it hoped to charge content owners for delivery of their programmes over its broadband network. "We can't give the content providers a completely free ride and continue to give customers the [service] they want at the price they expect," said John Petter, managing director of BT Retail's consumer business. What do you think on this or did you even know this is what BT have been doing...i have recently changed from BT Broadband cause i was sick and tired of paying a fortune for a rubbish connection, and was told by a customer service staff that the 20Mbps was certainly not available if my area with any ISP and the best people to be with were BT (them) this was not true as i had already arranged connection with a new service provider for the end of that week with a 22Mbps of which my speed has been consistant for 4 months now of 19.5 - 19.8Mbps and the price i paty is £9.79 a month but at peak times or on friday or saturday nights trying to use youtube or iplayer etc is a knightmare my youtube practically comes to a stop, this above is what i found out that even though i am not with BT Broadband they own the line so they can restrict or throttle how much usage goes to that site......what do you think??? moreResolved Question: BT business broadband, BT2700HGV hub problems?

Hello, I've stumbled into a great situation. While running across the street the only pot hole in the street gobbled my (left) ankle up leaving a ligament completely torn. I couldn't drive on account of my truck being a standard (stick). My dad took me to the ER and I've been recovering at home. My Dr. says it's too early for rehab and I'm STILL using crutches a month after the incident. I've attended some classes. I was only able to email two professors before leaving. I had no internet at home and no reasonable way to get back to college. My mom had broadband card on business trip so I was without internet and had no way to email homework or get lecture notes. I'm finally back, still screwed up, but trying to hobble to class. How should I go about reasoning or talking to my professors so they understand the situation? Should I email, make appointments, talk to a higher-up such as an adviser or someone like that? I'm stressed, worried that my first semester of college at University of Louisville will be ruined, and my chances of being a Bio. FCC Votes to Begin Crafting `Net Neutrality' Rules Oct 22 12:42 PM US/Eastern By JOELLE TESSLER AP Technology Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal regulators took an important step Thursday toward prohibiting broadband providers from favoring or discriminating against certain kinds of Internet traffic. Despite the concerns of telecommunications companies and the agency's two Republicans, the Federal Communications Commission voted to begin writing so-called "network neutrality" regulations. Proponents say the rules would prevent phone and cable companies from abusing their control over the market for broadband access. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said regulations are needed to ensure that broadband subscribers can access all legal Web sites and services, including Internet calling applications and video sites that compete with the broadband companies' core businesses. "Internet users should always have the final say about their online service, whether it's the software, applications or services they choose, or the networks and hardware they use to the connect to the Internet," Genachowski said. The FCC's two other Democrats voted to support his plan. The agency's two Republican commissioners voted merely to start the formal rule-making process, but said they are opposed to the substance of Genachowski's proposal. Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell said he remains unconvinced that broadband providers are engaging in widespread anticompetitive behavior that requires government intervention. "I do not share the majority's view that the Internet is showing breaks and cracks, nor do I believe that the government is the best tool to fix it," he said. Next up for the FCC is to actually craft the rules, with a vote on whether to adopt them expected to come by next summer. That would culminate a five-year debate in Washington that has pitted Internet companies such as Google Inc. against some of the biggest phone and cable companies—including AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp. The broadband providers insist they need flexibility, free from government intervention, to keep their networks running smoothly. They want to ensure that high-bandwidth applications such as YouTube videos don't hog too much capacity and impede other traffic, like e-mail and online searches. They also say that net neutrality regulations would discourage them from expanding and upgrading their networks. "We continue to hope that any rules adopted by the commission will not harm the investment and innovation that has made the Internet what it is today and that will make it even greater tomorrow," Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen said in a statement. But companies such as Google, Amazon.com Inc., eBay Inc.'s Skype and Facebook Inc. argue that without such rules, the broadband companies will become online gatekeepers that can prioritize their own online services or those of their business partners—and potentially put others at a disadvantage. Markham Erickson, executive director of the Open Internet Coalition, called Thursday's vote "the first step toward ... creating a framework that promotes innovation and consumer choice on the Internet." The Open Internet Coalition represents public interest groups and big Internet companies, including Google, Amazon and eBay. Genachowski's plan calls for the agency to formally adopt four broadband principles that have guided the FCC's enforcement of communications laws on a case-by-case basis. Those principles state that network operators must allow subscribers to access all online content, applications, services and devices as long as they are legal. The FCC relied on those guidelines last year when it ordered Comcast to stop blocking subscribers from using an online file-sharing service called BitTorrent, which is used to transfer big files such as online video. Comcast is challenging the FCC ruling in court. Genachowski also wants the FCC to adopt two additional principles that would bar broadband providers from discriminating against particular content or applications and require them to disclose network management practices. And he is seeking to apply all six rules across all types of broadband networks, including wireless systems, which have been largely unregulated. "The time is now to move forward with consideration of fair and reasonable rules of the road," Genachowski said Thursday. "It would be a serious failure of responsibility not to consider such rules, for that would be gambling with the most important technological innovation of our time." OK I have a laptop where I use Verizon mobile broadband Internet to access the web. I have a company that has three hard wired internet access connections but there is also a secured wireless router that broadcasts a secured signal. I use an inventory database that allows me to save all the information onto one computer. Lets say Computer A is the computer that shares the data file with Computer B and C. I mapped a network drive that allows me to view and update the data file on Computer A while using Computer B and/or C. (Of course I have the program installed on all three computers.) So the question is this... Is there anyway that I can setup my laptop while being connected to the Internet with my USB "air card" and be at home and open the inventory program and view and edit the main database just like I can with Computer B and C?As sad as it is. I am considered the IT guy. We dont have an IT department. I am not using a VPN. So there is no way to request it. Anything else you can think of i can do. Whether it be a program. We have a small family run business and we need a folder or directory that we can store files in that can be available to other computers in the house. We currently have 3 laptops and 1 desktop all running off the same BT wireless broadband unit. The files we want to keep in this folder are simple word documents and PDFs so I figure that it would be ok for the network to be wireless (just like our internet) and the thought of running cables throughout the house is too much to bare! We also have an old desktop that could probably be used as the server if that helps or one of the current computers could host it. All the laptops have built in wireless adaptors and we have a couple of external ones for the desktops. I have a BT Business Hub which works tolerably well as the central point of a small WLAN. Historically I have used the Ethernet ports on the back of the device to connect an older desktop machine (which lacks WiFi) and also a Buffalo LinkStation. This has all worked fine. However, a house move now means that my Business Hub needs to be in a different room from the desktop and the LinkStation. I effectively have the following setup: Room A - Business Hub Room B - WiFi enabled laptop and WiFi enabled printer Room C - desktop and LinkStation (no WiFi on either) Short of laying a very long run of Ethernet cable from Room A to Room C, can I create a little Ethernet LAN (with just the desktop and the LinkStation attached to it) in Room C? Ideally I would like some device that has Ethernet ports on the back of it but that can connect to the 802.11g network that is currently running off the Business Hub. IE the broadband signal goes like this: Telephone socket to Business Hub via RJ11 Business Hub to laptop and printer via 802.11g Business Hub to OTHER DEVICE via 802.11g OTHER DEVICE to desktop and LinkStation via Ethernet I have seen products like the Belkin F5D7132 that extend the range of a WiFi network but I have no idea if those have Ethernet ports on them. Any suggestions as to what I can do? Thanks! Thanks very much to both respondents - very helpful indeed! In the end, I opted to buy two Buffalo WHR-G125 routers, because they can also be used as access points by means of a simple switch on the back. (I only found this out because I ended up calling Buffalo pre-sales to find out which resellers might have stock of the other item mentioned by Will - and they advised me to get the routers instead!) At £18 each from eBuyer you really can't go wrong, it would seem - because I can now effectively install four Ethernet ports in any room in the house I might need them.
