Wi-Fi piggybackers 'fess up

More than half (54 percent) of computer users admit to using someone else's Wi-Fi without permission, research reveals.

Many internet-enabled homes fail to secure their wireless connection properly with passwords and encryption, allowing others to steal internet access rather than pay an ISP, according to IT security company Sophos, which carried out the 560-strong survey.

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos, said borrowing Wi-Fi internet access may feel like a victimless crime, but it deprives ISPs of revenue.

And if you hop onto your next door neighbour's wireless broadband connection to download movies and music from the net, chances are you are also slowing down their internet access and impacting on their download limit, Cluley added.

Five Things We Learned This Weekend

1) That youth will be served this Heisman season. During 12 hours of channel-flipping Saturday, I heard numerous talking heads proclaim that Tim Tebow "distanced himself" from the other Heisman contenders with his performance Saturday against Florida Atlantic. I'm not sure that's entirely accurate. Florida's sophomore quarterback "distanced himself" when his most viable competitor, Oregon's Dennis Dixon, was lost for the season Thursday night against Arizona. Tebow did nothing against the Owls he hadn't done all year (other than pass for a few more yards than usual), yet for some reason it took until this game for any remaining doubters to finally concede that hey, this kid is doing something special.I similarly cringe whenever I hear someone say this year's Heisman field is "weak." I assume what they actually mean is, "A lot of the guys that we pegged in the preseason haven't panned out," because we're witnessing some of the most spectacular individual seasons in the history of the sport right now.

Iraq: three years of war

The Iraqi Shi'a politicians (hostages of Iran's strategic interests) must be freed from their sponsors before progress can be made. America's policies (if they existed) have so far failed, and her actions show evidence of hopelessness and offer no reason for optimism.

My only hope is for the international community to increase the pressure on Iran (using the nuclear issue) to persuade or force it to keep hands off Iraq. By stopping Iran, Syria and Turkey from interfering in Iraq, I have every reason to become optimistic. After all, the Iraqis have now accepted democracy and adopted a democratic constitution. I was pro-war in 2002/3 and I have not yet regretted it or changed my mind. On the whole, I still think life is better than before the war.

Product Recalls

The recall is expected to begin later this month, with notification letters to continue through next year.

12/5/2007 COMBINATION WALL AND MICROWAVE OVEN RECALL

General Electric is voluntarily recalling 92,000 GE, GE Profile, and Kenmore built-in combination wall and microwave ovens sold between January 2000 and December 2003.

GE says the door switch can overheat and ignite plastic components in the appliance.

The CPSC says the defect has caused 35 cases of minor property damage.

The commission also says that the lower thermal oven does not pose a hazard and no injuries have been reported.

GE is offering affected customers a free repair or a rebate on GE and GE profile units.
