Open Question: Problems with my broadband connection or computer(s)?
Over the past month I've been having connection issues. The problem being that everything looked normal (modem connecting, computer booting up properly, etc), and yet I couldn't browse the Internet, or update any important applications (e.g. AVG). I checked all my settings. They seemed to check out as normal. I consulted my ISP about it, and they sent me a replacement modem, just in case. Same result. Just to be sure, I backed up everything from my PC that's important to me. However, something odd happened. My laptop, which is not often used for Internet, was considered as a substitute for my PC while it wasn't connecting. So, I plugged my modem into it...and got the same result! Very strange... Many questions burn in my mind about this situation: 1. Was my PC faulty at all, and was my laptop doing the same thing merely coincidental, or does it go deeper than that? 2. Was my modem at fault (if so, how come my replacement did the same thing)? 3. Was my phone connection at fault? If so, how come the technician that came to have a look didn't detect anything? I'm able to connect now, for reasons beyond my understanding. Dust was cleaned out of the inside of my PC's tower, and for some reason seems to be connecting. As good as this may be, I'm still skeptical. Besides, it doesn't explain the laptop. Can somebody please explain to me what could've gone wrong? If you need more info, I'll add more in the additional data section. Thanks. moreOpen Question: internet set up question?
I am currently a student at a boarding military school. I want my own internet in my room so what should i do??? There's is only an outlet for electricity and that's it. There isn't a phone outlet or anything. I have no clue how I'm supposed to get internet with only an AC outlet. I've heard of something called broadband or something but I'm still clueless. Can someone tell me what to order and how to set it up? thanks moreOpen Question: Which is a better phone deal? PLEASE HELPPPP!!?
I'm going to get my cell phone on a contract for the first time. These are my options. $29 a month, and i get : $150 credit , and 1GB on the Mobile Broadband stick per month. OR $19 a month , and i get : $70 a month credit. Unlimited MSN on my phone would cost an extra $5 a month. Would i pay for an internet connection fee when i sign on msn on my phone? or would it be free because its unlimited? What's a bettter deal , $19 + $5 a month, OR $29 a month. i already have 2 modems, and my dad has allowed me to get the internet in my room on my computer separate from his computer which is already connected to the internet, what i want to know is can i use the second modem to connect my computer to the internet on the same phone line as dad's? if i need to use a separate phone line, that is not a problem, we have 2 anyway, but dad wants to keep the other one open for his business this is all broadband by the way, dad's modem is ADSL 2+ ready but we aren't in an ADSL 2+ area so we can't use it, and my modem is a normal DSL one thanks in advance for any constructive advice moreOpen Question: Slow Internet Connection?
Hello, I am having a problem with my internet, its slow all the time and i can not find out why! Im with demon home broadband 8mb Ive tried seeing if swapping to BT would help and they said my estimated download speed is 1.0mb so it would not speed my connection up! Ive rang both my ISP and BT (check the phone line) and they say there is no problems at either side. ive just purchased a accelerator plate which BT recommend it might help all though i am doubtful, just waiting on postage. And now seriously getting frustrated with my internet service. Just ran a test at speedtest.net and here are my results. My sis was hijacking the whole broadband bandwidth by downloading her fucking noobish manga vids. So i was thinking bout sabotaging the ADSL connection by picking up the phone downstairs whithout installing the low pass filter. One thing for sure noise came out from the phone for a while, then the noise dissapeared, and for a sec i thought already disabled the whole communication of the modem. But the weird thing happened, the modem resynchronized and the noise came back and the internet connection was reastablished again (FUCK). I tried blowing into the phone to cripple the connection again but to no avail the connection was still staying strong, i even tried playing 20khz tracks thru my mp3 to the phone but, nothing happens. LOL, i thought ADSL is a whimp and is easily disconnected even with the slightest noise, but i was proven wrong.. what happened actually moreResolved Question: How to get broadband internet in a house with 'no phone point'?

I use a sprint plan for internet wireless connection. I am paying a $59/month for the service I only use the wireless connection card a few days every month and I'd like to find a provider that I could pay a daily fee only the days I use it. I'm currently with Sky Broadband, the free version with a 2MB connection. I only receive about 1.2MB of it, due to my phone line being really far away, and basically I could go and buy a 100MB connection but I would still only receive 1.2MB. I've checked Virgin's website and cable/fibre-optic isn't available in my area. So now I'm stuck for options. I play online games so I want at least a 5MB connection, and willing to pay up to around 15-20 quid a month for it. What're my options? moreVoting Question: Help with wireless router.?
So here's my problem... My mum is one of those people who is anti-wireless internet, so I only have a broadband connection in my room. I was thinking of just covertly buying a wireless router to use in my room so I can get online on my ipod touch etc. So basically, Can I set up a wireless router in my room with just a broadband connection? Thanks, moreVoting Question: What are the cons to AT&T's Mobile Broadband?
I'm planning to order a netbook very soon. One of the options from the company I'm ordering from is to pre-install AT&T cellular mobile broadband. I was wondering if I should get it installed or not. I'd only be using it for the netbook, not for phone service. I'm planning to open a YouTube account for my band and it is imperative that I have internet coverage that supports good and heavy media streaming. Is this an issue with AT&T? Are there any other issues (other than cost) that I should be aware about? Please help. moreVoting Question: What are the cons of AT&T's Mobile Broadband?

My friend lives in a flat that he is renting from the council and cannot install a new phone line or cable for cable BB, he has an existing BT Phone Line and it has been previously used for BT Internet by a former resident of the flat that his still in contact with in order to get the details of the BT phone line. I'm assuming that since he has to use a BT phone line he'll have to pay for line rental no matter what package he buys, if that is not the case then that's great. What he wants is for a decent BB package that has an UNCAPPED download limit preferably 4Mb+. Which company and package is the best for him to use without it getting too expensive? moreVoting Question: How can one use BSNL broadband from PC to phone?
I've broadband connection. Can i use this network connection via mobile?(Thro USB or bluetooth). I want PC's internet to be used in phone.(not phone's gprs) moreResolved Question: Regarding routers and internet speed?
We have a Linksys wireless-G 2.4 GHz broadband router. At times we have 3 people online at the same time. Two play online peer games. At times, it seems more like dialup than high speed dsl (it's the highest offered in this area--over 700 (I think they said it was 900 ???). I'm getting pretty frustrated with the speed. It only seems to effect my speed, not the other two. My system has the router, etc hooked up to it. My system is clean -- recently reinstalled everything but the problem still occurs. I called my internet provider and they said that the the speed wasn't what it should be. They (Embarq/Century Link) had be open some tool online that measured the speed and it was only about half. I removed a filter device from the phone line (forgot to remove it when I cancelled telephone service) but it's still a quarter short of what it should be and the tech couldnt' figure out why. The company changed to Centuy Link so that tool is no longer available or at least I can't find it. Is there a better router that that will provide better speed/performance (this one is from our internet provider)? If not the router, is it with my provider or could the issue be at home? moreVoting Question: Wireless Connection w/ a broadband card?

Hi I have AOL broadband upto 8mb and a BT phone line. I recently had to change my phone number with BT and had to be disconnected then reconnected with a new number. Before this, I was getting download speeds of almost 1mb per second, but now only get 130kb per second? AOL says its nothing to do with them, which I believe, as as far as they were concerned, disconnecting and reconnecting made barely any difference. Can anyone help or advise? Thanks in advance M moreResolved Question: broadband for my laptop. i have a stick for usb port, is it secure? can anyone use off of it?

Is this legal?
Hi. I'm on the 3 mobile phone network, and usually it's very good. But today I found out they're taking what seem to be disproportionate amounts of credit, to account for "the new rate of VAT". I have an internet dongle with pay-as-you broadband on it, and today discovered my unused top-up has gone from E20 to E9.96, while my sister, who bought a month's internet add-on for her phone, found it gone in less than a week, with normal usage. I'm not sure if I'm asking this in the right place, and I suppose it's possible it's just a glitch . . . but surely this can't be legal? I can't find any other complaints online, and all the 3 website offers is a message along the lines of "Don't worry, your balance may have been altered to reflect the new rate of VAT, but you're still getting your money's worth". Now I don't know much about VAT, but to take half my credit seems absurd. I want to know if I have the right to complain, and if anyone else has experienced the same thing. Any help would be appreciated, as I'm feeling horribly ripped off right now. moreResolved Question: can bsnl 3G sim card be used in samsung E-250 phone?
can it be used for broadband internet usage through pc connecting it with a data cable? suggest any methods to avail the 3G broadband speed to access web without buying a 3G handset..... moreResolved Question: Is my internet provider telling the truth?
I live in the U.K. and I have recently become a customer of talktalk due to tiscali being bought out when i first switched to broadband I had a modem and had a lot of trouble with connecting to the internet not to mention slow speeds close to that of dial up. After months of problems we were given a free router and downgraded from our up to 8mb package to upto 1mb as we were told our line couldnt handle this. Since then we have had a much better service with the rare hiccup but it has been much improved fare to say 1mb isnt outstanding but its something. However since the end of December i started experiencing slow speeds sometimes as little as 0.10mbps which made it impossible for internet use. I have been in touch for the last two weeks and have had internet on and off, fast and slow eventually my constant complaining led to there technical expert phoning me in the past i had been told there was fault on my line but nothing had happened. Apparently now according to them the circuit is being replaced? I live in a village not far from town but apparently my rural location has this really old BT circuit which means i get slow speeds and is "being replaced" my friend who lives closer to the exchange than me in town gets 5mbps so im not expecting 20mbps but a neighbour gets 2.5mbps and is with the same company. To be honest all i want is a consistant, reliable service but im intrigued by this circuit where is it for a start? i havnt seen any BT vans or roadworks near my house would this be near to these green boxes that have something to do with it? Can someone actually explain to me how this all works as I honestly don't know whether to trust my provider anymore they are helpful but am i just getting told rubbish? Has anyone else had a circuit replaced near them? i doubt fibre optics will come to me even before 2020 let alone 2012. moreVoting Question: Getting 3g, EVDO or whatever on a netbook? Internet everywhere how costly?
I am planning on getting a nice net book which still costs under $500. I have wifi in my house, but other than that wifi is hard to find. Sure they have wifi at some hotels and at starbucks, but really I would like to use this netbook on the go, in the car, on vacation and when I'm with family. Obviously I can't get wifi anywhere... They have two services, which I don't really understand or know the difference between, called EVDO and 3g I'm aware of. Also, I heard you can get internet from your phone? I might get a smartphone from verizon with just the basic $30 data plan if that means I can somehow use it as a modem or router for my netbook giving me internet. I I get a netbook with a SIM card slot, can I just get a $30 unlimited data plan and have internet? I guess it costs $60 a month from AT&T and the same for verizon for mobile broadband or EVDO I think. I really don't understand any of this, but what's the cheapest way to get internet on the go on a netbook with EVDO and HSDPA supported? moreResolved Question: Can I use a dongle to receive internet at home?
I have a broadband connection, which means I have to have a bt landline. To be honest the only use for the phone is that it enables me to get on the internet! I'd like to get rid of the phone/broad band and get a dongle. The O2 one I have seen gives unlimited use (within reason) for 15 pounds per month. This sounds great as it would cut my bill in half, seeing as I have no other use for the phone. But would it actually work? Could I 'replace' my broadband connection with the dongle? moreResolved Question: How can I make a wi-fi zone using my laptop?

I just checked my usage for my minutes/messages and there also is a charge for "data" usage on my Verizon cell phone. I would like to know how much is this going to cost. It says 65.59KB used and PAY-AS-YOU-GO-KB $0.015. If anyone can answer, how much will this be? Also, what else could be considered "data" besides accessing the Internet which I haven't done on my cell phone. It's a broadband smartphone that I recently switched to. Thanks!!lol@wonnder, they are a ripoff! I am on a plan with my father and our contract doesn't end until six more months. The cell phone I'm using now sucks, I don't think I can last that long. I am trying to avoid upgrading with Verizon, even though I can with the plan we have.theuncool1--I think at the time when it was bought(almost 2 yrs ago), you didn't have to add that plan/feature. I believe now you have to.emmasmom--I haven't been on the Internet, that is why I am confused. As for the usage cost, I guess around the same much as you but wanted to be sure if I was figuring it out right. moreResolved Question: Broadband speed problem?
I had problem with my Broadband speed with BT, It was running around 1 mb 900kbs a sec, Which i am paying for 8 mb... I rang BT did all the trouble shooting and he told me to test my BT home hub at the master socket, by taking the faceplate of the socket and plugging in the router by the test socket.. It did work fine I got around 6 mb which i usually get. So i tested it on my phone socket in my living room and it worked fine there aswell. so after an hour or I using the internet and all of the sudded all the web pages were acting very slow. So i tested my BB again to find, I am only getting 10k a sec now. Its feels like i am using a 56k modem again... BT are saying there is fine but i cannot a see a fault at mine as every connection as got filter on it, I even used different router to rule out the router could be the problem the BT hub but its still slow... Can one suggest why i am getting these ridiculous speeds....I am quite close to my Exchange around 600 meters, I live in London, And i know about peak hours that speeds will drop, But not as a low 10k a sec, like 56k modem... I was averaging around 7000kbps (7 mb) a sec during of peak hours.. Now it wont go above 512k which is under 1 mb moreResolved Question: Do Broadband USB sticks for computers work at sea?

Hi, I've been tiscali broadband for approx 2 years and not really had any issues. But for the last 10 days I have not been able to access my online banking by the RBS. I contacted the RBS and a tech guy called me back and talked me thro lots of different things, and after 40 mins on the phone he put the problem down to my broadband provider, tiscali - now owned by talk talk. He suggested they could have changed something, I have noticed my broadband speed is a lot slower than it used to be, used to run at 7.8 - now I'm lucky if runs at 5. Is this tiscali or is this an over-saturation of people within the exchange now on the internet?? I don't know. I will have to phone tiscali but I know I'm probably going to end up in call centre! Just wondering if anyone else has problems?? I'd also be grateful if anyone could recommend good broadband providers incase I decide to change, BT and Sky have been ones talked about amonst friends. Many thanks...Hi - thanks Darren. I have tried both your suggestions and unfortunately they didnt work. SSL sites are definitely slower, but they do eventually work. Really strange - i put in all my password details for RBS then it's just a blank screen - with the page trying to load. But if I check my digital banking from my hubbies laptop it shows the last time I logged on as the time I couldnt log on - if you know what I mean. RBS thinks I was on but I could not see any screen. Shop assistant is to speak on phone with management and says: “we offer you the same plan for half the price ( for £10 a month) for next 18 month term” So I agree to offer. But now I find out on my bank statement they still debiting £20. The plan was of mobile broadband, 3GB a month. I did not agree to pay £20 a month. So I must get back £10 what they pocketing without my consent. What do I do in order to get back money? Just recently I have visited T-mobile shop and they said that Web'n'walk bill of £20 was made online on 08 January for debit to be made on 20 Jan, but because I agreed for new tariff three days later on 11 January, old tariff of £20 still been applied on 20 Jan and new tariff begins to be debited on 20 Feb. This is one more example how companies rip-off customers moneys - between day 08 and day 20 there are 11 days ! The situation in question as is: I have ordered Web'n'walk for 24 months on 05 Dec 2007; first payment of £20 have been debited on 20 Dec 2007. Big Q: when I should have been stop using contract in 2009 and when last payment should be taken? And Q2: if new contract for next 18 months for £10 per month on 11 Jan 2010 was made while old tariff of £20 have been debited on 20 Jan 2010 - when new 18 month contract finishes? This is not to know for shallow curiosity but because they don't stop providing service after contract for service has ended and don't stop taking monthly payment. Ms eli suggests to cancel Direct Debit - but one must be sure that contract has expired, otherwise cancelling DD might lower bank account credibility in low scores? What do you think of it? Thanks v much ! moreVoting Question: Gaming addiction - serious. How to resolve, please help?
Hi All, Are you ever in that situation where a close friend is having a problem, you offer advice but that's not enough? Well it's come to that - I will be as brief as possible but I'm hoping for some input from anyone who can suggest a solution. I have offered my advice and I'm not repeating it here because I'm keen to know what everyone else thinks. I have a very good friend who's currently going through a divorce, is also in need of surgery that has a high risk of paralasis or death - and to top it all, her son is severely addicted to World of Warcraft. Gaming Addict background: Parents had problems and messy divorce proceedings commenced in 2007 (still on going), father was 'mental' bully. Addict was physically active in mid-teens, in late teens had stable relationship and job, became a 'light' World of Warcraft player (early twenties), was made redundent (with payout equal to 4 months pay), spent large amount of payout taking partner on expensive holiday, she left him possibly because of addiction to WoW (World of Warcraft) and/or because of lack of motivation to seek employment. The addict makes payments directly to the broadband providers, mother pays phone bill. There are others living in the house that work from home and so phone line cannot be disconnected as they need the internet connection. Gaming addict current daily movements: starts gaming at 2pm, finishes at approx 2am. never goes out, does not have a regular intake of fluid or food. Does not see real physical friends or socialise, ignores the few friends he has when gaming. Makes minimal contact with mother. Mother tells him that he needs to get a job and get out the house - he becomes angry or says he will and then doesn't. Mother's attempts to resolve: She is supportive based on the advice of the doctor prescribing anti-depressents and tries to maintain communication, but normally transfers to giving instructions to addict. Mother also offers him dinner and cooks for him most days of the week because she is concerned for his health. Mother prompts addict to do basic household tasks, such as taking the bin out or mowing the lawn, son says yes but does not do tasks. Mother has successfully got him to a job centre when he's not 'raiding' and he is now on benefit to the best of my knowledge. Overall: This is an extreme situation, as much as the mother tries to do what's right and 'motherly', the addict is still playing every day and does nothing else. His one close friend (who also lives in the same house), emails the addict during the day and he ignores his emails. When asked why he didn't respond to his emails, he said that he was either 'on a mission' or 'couldn't be bothered. Any advice welcome, as are any questions. I'm asking this on behalf of my friend because she has enough to deal with as it is. Be assured that right now if the addict fell over and died, it would not bother me in the slightest - my primary concern is the mother/my friend. It is her that is being torn apart with the usual questions of "am I being a bad parent", "what am I doing wrong", "I can't be cruel to be kind", etc. moreResolved Question: Is there a known conflict between Windows Vista and PC Guard?
I have been using Virgin Media's PC Guard free security software for years, on my previous pc and laptop, both of which used Windows XP as their OS. Just over 6 mths ago purchased a shiny new laptop with Vista. At end of December its trial period of installed McAfee security software expired, so I thought I'd revert to PC Guard and downloaded it to shiny new toy. Hmmm. Ever since have had series of probs, which, to cut a long story short mean I cannot connect to internet on new m/c, and although PC Guard appears to have installed, it doesn't seem to be operating, nor can I access the programme. Lots of other strange occurrences, such as the wonderful Vista clock has been blacked out, too many to detail, but before I attempt, again, to get some sense out of Virgin Broadband's helpline (lost the will to live last time I tried this), I wondered if any of you know if there IS a problem with PC Guard on Vista? (If not, I'll set aside 3hrs of my time, swallow a handful of valium, gird up my emotional resilience and phone Virgin again!!!) Thank you for your help. moreVoting Question: 3 computers on broadband sharing, how can i put a password on to block one computer?

We have 2 phone sockets downstairs and one upstairs the modem is connected to one of the sockets downstairs, the other socket (near the entrance) is not used. the phone socket upstairs has a phone connected to it, when somebody uses that phone the internet stops working. Is there any way around this? Maybe a filter that can be fitted? Any help would be very much appreciated Thanks moreResolved Question: What should I do about my wireless internet being disrupted by my cordless phone?
My upstairs neighbors/good friends and I share an internet connection two-ways. They have the Modem (from PRIMUS), I have a 2.4GHz Broadband Router catching their signal in my living room. And my laptop has an external wireless card catching my living room router's signal...giving me THE FANTASTIC INTERNET! Today, I got cable telephony installed...right in my bedroom, next t my laptop. It's a simple cable phone line..no actual cable TV or cable internet. I just needed the phone. My cordless phone is a 2.4GHz cordless phone. Actually...there are two units. One of them is plugged right under my computer table...the other is a few feet away from my router in the living room. I heard that cordless phones can disrupt my wireless net signal cuz they both run on the same "wave" of 2.4GHz? Which kind of cordless phone would NOT disrupt my signal. Is the cable box also somehow gonna disrupt my internet? I doubt THAT...but I'm no technie. All suggestions welcome...Thank you my friends! moreVoting Question: 18+ Americans pls. When will she get back to me?
Thanks for reading. Apologies this might be a bit of a different question but its to do with relationships so Ive posted here. Im in the UK and there's a girl in the US in Ohio. We met here in the UK in my university, where she came here as an exchange student. We agreed to talk on skype once she got back home. She moved into her University last wednesday. So exactly a week ago. She's not on campus and is moving into a new appartment. I'm just waiting for her to get back to me. I suspect that she doesnt have internet at home once shes moved in. So Id just like to know in the US, how long does it take to sort out internet connection? Do you need to wait to get a phone line conected first and then install a broadband company? thanks. I just like to know roughly when I will hear from her. moreTop Broadband Internet Phone Links
