Broadband network crash upsets punters
An unexplained failure on Wellington's broadband network sparked a citywide internet failure and disrupted services in other parts of the country. Broadband network operator CityLink's system crashed early yesterday morning causing slow or, in some cases, no service for most of the capital. The outages left annoyed TAB punters flooding the betting service helpline with complaints, TradeMe volumes cut by a quarter and MetService clients unable to track weather information for six hours. CityLink chief executive Neil de Wit says the company hadstaff working all day to resolve the problem, but admits he has "no idea" what caused it. Because the failure occurred on a Saturday and most of the company's clients were businesses and government departments, he was unsure how much disruption was caused.

Each week I will attempt to make a few predictions, both real and fantastic. I hope this helps you win a few sheckles and fantasy points. Let us take a look at a few of this weekends matchups. Please keep in mind that these predictions are for entertainment purposes only and are worth exactly what you paid for them. Game of The Week Pittsburgh Steelers (9-3) at New England Patriots (12-0) The Patriots narrowly escaped their first defeat last week against the Ravens . They did the same the week before against the Eagles. Don't expect that to happen again as the Pats will come out reinvigorated after two close calls and the untimely running of mouths from Pittsburgh. Expect the Steelers to disrupt the Patriot offense at times but not enough to shut them down. QB Tom Brady will find a weakness and exploit it.
Airlines tighten security precautions
Travelers and security officials have been on edge since August 10 when British police foiled a daring plot to attack up to 10 US-bound airliners using liquid explosives hidden in water bottles. As a result, authorities have been taking all threats extremely seriously and several flights have been grounded in recent weeks due to security concerns. On August 19, an Excel Airways flight from London Gatwick to Hurghada International Airport was diverted to Italy after a note claiming that a bomb was aboard was found. Italian police declared the incident a false alarm after searching the plane. Security has also been beefed up at airports around the world, causing significant delays. Regulations on carry-on luggage have changed dramatically to and from the UK and US.
