Airlines Prepared for Winter Holiday Travel, group says

Airlines are ramping up for the large number of fliers expected over the next several weeks, and remain committed to providing travelers with up-to-the-minute notifications of delays or changes in their flight schedule by delivering updates to travelers' wireless devices up to 24 hours in advance. At some airports, this travel information, as well as other important announcements, will be displayed in multiple languages. Several airlines are offering flight-status updates via text messaging, as well. The airlines have also made enhancements to their terminal and gate areas, modifying layouts to better serve passengers' needs. For instance, extra self-service kiosks have been added in terminal areas at some airports that can be used both for check-in and rebooking purposes. To help manage high traffic volumes and assist passengers whose plans may change due to weather, ATA member airlines are increasing staffing levels. In addition, carriers continue to expand the information offered to travelers through their Web sites, putting travel details such as flight status, seat availability and timetables at passengers' fingertips.

Easynet fixes email outage

Easynet has finally resolved a series of national email outages which lasted for 10 days.

Customers of the ISP's POP3 email services suffered downtime and delays from 23 January until last Friday. According to Easynet's status page, the issue was resolved at about 10:00(GMT) on Friday morning.

The problems were caused by a mail server configuration error, according a company spokeswoman. The spokeswoman added in a statement: "The configuration problem has been rectified. We will continue to improve the design of the mail platforms. No mails have been lost."

Despite the fact Easynet's status page describes the problem as national, the spokeswoman claimed "less than one per cent of our UK enterprise customer base were affected". She said typical downtime for affected customers was around an hour.

Hanging on the telephone

Nobody's trying to turn back the clock. Vinyl is dead and the MP3 may be crushing the CD into shards of landfill. But can this shrill mobile system really be the future of music consumption?

That future is now, according to one mobile outlet I visited the next day. "Listen to how loud this one goes," the giddy sales assistant cooed, unleashing a screech that made my teeth ache. A 4GB memory card can handle 1000 songs, she exclaimed over the din. "Now, if you want a really loud one " Louder. Smaller. More songs.

That's progress, as yesterday's mobile phone transforms into the portable music player of tomorrow.

But who's driving the revolution here? Not musicians, surely, and not music fans, either - at least not the kind who sip red wine and listen to old Bryan Ferry albums.

Mugabe intercepts opposition e-mails - claim

ZIMBABWE'S main opposition accused President Robert Mugabe's government on Friday of blocking its electronic mail to subscribers to suffocate dissenting voices.

A local Internet service provider (ISP) notified subscribers on the opposition Movement for Democratic Change's electronic mailing list that an e-mail from the party had been blocked because "it contains sensitive content".

Officials at the company were not reachable for comment. Several similar alerts have been sent out to MDC mail subscribers in the past two weeks.

"The blocking of emails from the MDC is yet another ploy by the regime to deny people access to as wide a variety of views as possible," an MDC spokesman said.

He said Friday's e-mail was an invitation to local media to a news conference where the leader of a smaller party announced he was joining the main opposition.
