Resolved Question: Am I doing something wrong with my wireless connection?

I've looked at many posts on this and no one seems to be having quite the same problems as me. We got BT broadband about a month ago and got the BT Home Hub 2.0 with it. We're able to connect our desktop computer with wires but I cannot connect my laptop wirelessly. I say I cannot connect wirelessly but it depends where I am in the house. I can connect in my hall but not in my bedroom (which is at most 10 metres away, if even that, from the hub). I've tried restarting the hub, redoing the connection on my laptop and I've spent time on the website to try and find out how to fix it. Am I doing something wrong or is the laptop too far away to get a signal? My friend can get on it on her laptop in my room so I thought I was doing something wrong but I've tried everything I know to try and fix it and it just doesn't seem to work. I'm completely confused. Can anyone help? more

Hi i have sky broadband 8mb, my wireless worked fine for about a year and a half but one day instead of getting full signal up stairs (router is downstairs) i get 1 bar that wont connect unless i'm within like 4 metres of the router! My mums laptop is like brand new whereas mine is like 2006 and her works fine, though the signal is only 3/4bars up stairs. Resolved Question: Is Xbox 360 really better than PS3?

First of all I own both consoles and they're both great in their own way. This is more to do with getting online. When I first got my PS3 I wanted to enjoy playing online. It was very easy to get connected and set up, no wires as it has wireless build inside, it was just really simple and easy. Ok, I also got an Xbox 360 Elite for free! with a mobile phone contract and wanted to get online with that too. Going online with Xbox is much harder than PS3 and this is why. I got the wireless adaptor to go into the back of the Xbox but it can't get a signal or find my BT Home hub! PS3, no probs, it even found my next door neighbours signal!. So that is problem number 1. I done lots of things to try and get this adaptor to work but nothing works to get it to get a signal! I now have to use a 10 meter ethernet cable and run it from upstairs to my living room to play online! I disconnect it every time i've finished. The other problems and the PS3 has this too is the downloading speed is so slow! I've got broadband! so why is it so slow? The green stick on the PC bar menu is not on but it says signal is excellent! The one major annoying thing happened last night. I was playing Forza online and the Xbox fell over on it's side making a horrible noise. The next thing I get a message on my TV saying it can't read my disc! I check the disc and it's got an all mighty big ring of a scratch!!! so my Forza disc is broken! To sum it all up for me the PS3 is much easier to get going than Xbox. You need to do to many things to get online to work, also why does it say on MW2 strict LAN?! It can't do any matchmaking but PS3 no probs?! I paid £40 to play online for 12 months for Xbox but i've yet to see the great value in that! PS3 free of charge! online! So what if the menu's look boring at least it works! Anyone else have any problems with going online with Xbox? more

Voting Question: Wireless modem and router to increase signal strength?

Hi, i subscribe for Streamyx 4.0mbps and they give me RIGER wireless ADSL modem 2/2+ DB108-WL. I can use the wireless function. But when i enter my room, which is just 5 meters away from the modem, i got no signal at all. No coverage at all. And my housemate upstairs of course will never got internet. I got my old Linksys Wireless-B 2.4GHz 802.11b broadband router model BEFW11S4 version 4. So, i tried to use this router. Linksys default address is 192.168.1.1. So i tried to connect with the address. Unfortunately, not Linksys configuration page appear, but Streamyx page appear. Because i realized that Streamyx modem also use 192.168.1.1 as it's address. So now, i cannot use my router. And i cannot go far from RIGER modem, even 3-4 meters away, i will get no signal at all. Anybody can help me with this? If someone know how to configure the Linsys, would be much appreciated. I want my housemate to enjoy the internet also... more

Resolved Question: USB Ports not working. Please help?

Hi all! First I apologise for the length of this post. I have 6 usb ports (2 on front & 4 on back) and while trying to get a better reception on my mobile broadband stick (it was attached to a 5 metre usb extension lead which i had been using for a few months with no problems) I accidentally touched the bare metal of the usb plug on something metallic and the fuse box tripped switching everything off in the house. When i turned everything back on the pc worked fine except for the usb ports. I tried the uninstalling technique but with no success. I assume I will have to replace the ports if it's possible or am i missing something. Also if replacing the ports is actually possible is it a job for the pros? Huge thanks in advance more

Voting Question: Renting out a room to a couple?Should they pay more?

I am renting out the rooms of my house. There is a couple already living in a double bedroom (£300/month). Another one asked me to rent them a room because they would like to live with their friends. This room is a bit smaller than their friend's room and it is at £230/month for a single person only. (just because of the credit crunch.it is usually at £280/m). I was thinking to rent it to them for £280-300/month, promising to lock the rent for all the duration of the contract(more than 1 year). Could be a fair deal? The rent includes: - water bill - council tax - tv license - broadband They have got a tv and a freeview box in the room. The only bills they pay is the electricity and gas ones because there are prepayment meters. There is a 3rd double bedroom in the house but I think it will be hard to rent out because people usually don't want to live with couples (this is my experience) especially if there is a bathroom to share, that is why I'd increase the rent. I'm also a quite flexible landlord and I don't charge the tenants if they have a delay in the payment. (could be a bonus!:) Could you please tell me your point of view? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: My broadband speed is rubbish The exchange is too far from my house 4 it to improve Tried all isp's wot now?

I have had rubbish speed ever since we got broadband 10 years ago (1500mbps) Tried everything with all the isp's their advice has always been that the exchange is more than 2000 meters away from my house meaning that it is very slow by the time it gets to me. I get frustrated that someone who live nearer pays the same as i do but benefits by being closer to the telephone exchange. Any idea's ? more

Resolved Question: Will a battery operated Laptop emit less EMF than one operated on electric?

I suffer electro magnetic field sensitivity, from fluorescent lighting and desk top computers, but less so on laptops, consequently I bought one. I use ethernet Cable to receive broadband & wireless cable & mouse - putting me at a distance of about a metre from the laptop. I still suffer EMF. but much less (chronic fatigue , inability to concentrate ETC.) Should I run it on batteries only as I have been using it by 3 pin plug (UK), if so anyone know of cheap FUJITSU battery supplier, thanks. Thanks to all who responded. Yes, when I stated electricity, I meant `mains`.As for charging the batttery, I intend to switch laptop on & keep my distance, till it reaches full charge. By the way its a wireless mouse & keyboard, so I am not in physical contact with the laptop. more

Voting Question: Why is my BT Broadband so slow?

A while ago i was getting around 6mbps on BT Total Broadband (option 3). Then the cable broke that connects the house to the telegraph pole, so i got an engineer out to fix it. It has worked flawlessly now since the guy came but now i never get above 3.5 mbps. When i did the BT Speed tester, it said that my ip profile was set at 3000kbps. Why isnt it being increased? The test also stated that i only live around 1100 metres from the exchange and therefore i think i should get a better speed (another test said i should get up to 7mbps).i cant use the i-plate thingy because i have a really old phone socket. more

Voting Question: How come my phone line can only get up to 6mb of internet speed?

Hi, I'm currently looking for a new ISP and I've decided on Be Broadband. However, I was going to get the package that offers up to 24 mbps but apparently, according to the BT speed test, I can't get higher than 6mbps. I'm only 500 metres away from the exchange and Be says that means I should be able to get on average 18 mbps however BT are saying I can't get more than 6. Why is this? Is there a way I can change this, or do I have to settle for up to 8mbps? Thanks. more

Resolved Question: What's special about Ethernet?

I'm sick of my wireless Broadband connection dropping out and refusing to re-connect. So I'm going back to cable connectivity instead .( PC to router/home -hub.) No big problems anticipated. I can connect with ordinary phone cabling, but it's a 25 metre line and I wonder if there's any advantage in using Ethernet cabling and connectors? Resolved Question: Can somebody help me with regards to wireless broadband?

I have a pc in my flat with a wireless modem, (although I'm using it with wires at the moment) I need to buy a laptop as I also live half of the time in a house which is about a maximum of 600 metres away from this flat. The thing is, I'm tied up in a 12 month contract with my ISP. Obviously, I don't want to pay twice for broadband and was wondering if I could connect wirelessly while in this house to the broadband that is in my flat. I haven't got the faintest idea if this is possible but need to know so if you find this question a bit silly, excuse me for asking but please be kind with me! Many thanks in advance for any help anyone can give. Thanks for the answers. It is actually 0.4 miles which is approximatly 643 metres. the flat is on the 17th floor and I can see the house from my balcony, there's no large buildings or anything in the way to affect the signal. more

Voting Question: Why can I only get 2mb speed when my friend 15 feet away can get 20?

I'm with Orange broadband and I've been doing some speed and availability checks for my broadband. I'm paying for speeds up to 20mb but it turns out I can only have 2mb. This has annoyed me since my friend across the street with Sky broadband has exactly the same type of package but he can get a faster speed. I have my firewall set to low and there is another computer, printer, and Xbox wirelessly connected but not on at this time. Please could someone tell me why I can only get these speeds as none of the reasons on the website are valid to me such as poor quality telephone lines and such. I am 1493 metres from my nearest exchange and as far as I know I am on standard ADSL. Thanks :) more

Resolved Question: PS3 online people, help please.?

I got a PS3 nearly over a year ago now, and I can't play online because I live outside my fam's house in a caravan (I'm 17) that doesn't have a phone socket or anything like that. Inside the actual house, which is about 20, maybe 30 metres away we have a broadband connection. Is there any way that I can play online with these circumstances and if so how? Cheers. more

Resolved Question: Some one is Leeching off my wireless router?

Is there any way to find out who is leeching of my internet connection. I have 20GB broadband running three computers; 2 off the wireless router. I know I should have it password protected but had some problems a while back with the router and ended up having to use it without password protection. The router has about a 30 metre radius; I assume some one is leeching as the modem goes mental even when we are not using it ourselves. I am using a Belkin router on Cable broadband. I no longer have the instalation disk for the router. Many ThanksThe router is a Belkin Wireless G model number is F5D7230-4 more

Resolved Question: I dunno what PC to get!?!!?

Using PCSpecialist.co.uk I'm building an AMD Gaming RIG. Now The problem is, I want to be able to play Crysis nicely, have the system future proof, be able to play Modern Warfare 2 Maxed out graphics, and other future games on max or as close as. Now The problem is I have £1000. That is enough some might think however I do not wish to spend more than £865 on Computer because I still need to buy the Logitech G11 Keyboard, a decent Laser mouse, a Creative Fatal1ty headset, an that adds up about £85. Leaving me with a small amount to pre-order Modern Warfare and I want to get World of Warcraft as well as Subcribe for 6 months. My Entire system spec is or MAY be: Processor (CPU) AMD PHENOM II X3 720 BLACK EDITION 2.8 GHz SOCKET AM3 6MB CACHE OR AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz Socket AM3 8MB CACHE Memory (RAM) 4GB CORSAIR XMS3 DDR3 1600MHz - LIFETIME WARRANTY (2x2GB) Motherboard ASUS® CROSSHAIR III FORMULA: DDR3 - Republic of Gamers, CrossfireX Operating System Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium 64-bit + Windows 7 Upgrade Voucher (£86) USB Options 6 x USB 2.0 PORTS (4 REAR + 2 FRONT) AS STANDARD Memory - 1st Hard Disk 500GB SERIAL ATA 3-Gb/s HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (7,200rpm) 2nd Hard Disk NONE RAID (HDD 1 & 2) NONE 1st CD/DVD Drive 22x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM 2nd CD/DVD Drive NONE Graphics Card 1GB ATI RADEON™ HD 4870 PCI EXPRESS 2nd Graphics Card NONE Sound Card ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD) Network Facilities ONBOARD 10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT Modem NONE, I WILL BE USING BROADBAND Floppy Disk Drive NONE Memory Card Reader INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (READS XD, MS, CF, SD, etc) Case ANTEC 1200 BLACK GAMING CASE Power Supply & Case Cooling 800W Quiet Quad Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan (£89) (Special Offer) Processor Cooling ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER 64 PRO PWM QUIET AMD CPU COOLER (£19) Firewire & Video Editing 2 x IEEE 1394a FIREWIRE PORTS (1 onboard, 1 at back panel) TV Card NONE Monitor NONE 2nd Monitor NONE DVI Cable 1 x 2 Metre DVI Cable (£5) Keyboard & Mouse NONE Mouse NONE Speakers NONE Webcam NONE Headsets (VOIP) NONE Surge Protection NONE Printer NONE Anti-Virus NONE Office Software NONE External Hard Drive NONE Home Installation NONE Warranty 1 Year Return-to-Base incl 1 Year Free Collect & Return (£5) Delivery STANDARD INSURED DELIVERY TO UK MAINLAND (MON-FRI) Build Time Standard Build - Approximately 11 to 13 working days Quantity 1 Now that brings the price to £862 Which is OK. I'll have enough to buy some games. Subscribe to Warcraft and pre-order Modern Warfare 2. Now the thing that worries me is that it isn't Quad, and that Tri-Cores never really lifted off the ground. 2nd of all, the price elevates to £913. That's without the awesome keyboard I want. Then when I do buy the Awesoem keyboard, mouse, and headset then I'm left with about 20p to buy a game. (Won't happen) I don't want to make the wrong choice. People say don't compromise on processors and I don't want to drop price on the case and choose a smaller one with less intake/exhaust fans because my room is very hot alot of the time even with the windows open, and I also like the dust covers. I won't use newegg or anything else because I'm not building it myself. I'm using www.pcspecialist.co.uk I already have a 20" Samsung Syncmaster 2032MW 1680x1050 - 5ms HDTV Monitor/TV, Logitech X-230 2.1 Stereo Speakers, and a Logitech Quickcam 10 - 1.3MP Camera. I need this system to run for a long time. And I don't want to upgrade it for as long as possible either but I picked the mobo and case for just that reason - ability to upgrade if need be. Also regardless of whatever CPU I choose is that CPU cooler going to keep my processor cool in a antec 1200 case in a warm room, an maybe during overclocking? (maybe overclock 400mhz-600mhz MAX) Please help. If you have to use www.PCspecialist.co.uk yourself to mess about with available build options to cut cost, first click build my own > AMD > Crossfire System. I don't want dual-core. Please give me as much info as possible and some recommendations. Please answer as many questions as possible shown in this question. The main thing is the choice between Triple-Core and Quad. Although I need to save money to buy games. :( Confused :( ThanksSo X3 it is? It'd save me a good £60-70. Which allows for some gamage! :) I agree. I've read in a lot of forums its GPU slavery that does the leg-work mostly. I just hope my X3 won't die off in 2 years. I'll keep the Antec 1200, again coz of my hot room, an I think I'll go with the X3 720 Black Edition 2.8Ghz. Are you sure this will suffice for Crysis and Modern Warfare 2 on MAX? Is the CPU cooler enough for my CPU. I do intend on Overclocking the X3 720 to 3.2GHz. Thanks so far everyone, Lord I sense you are being honest, so I'm grateful.I'd probably stick with a X3 720 til the last second. Unless I had to critially update due to every game needing quads. more

Resolved Question: Voice Call charges on BSNL Broadband usage?

I am going for BSNL Home 750 or 750Plus. I came to know that they charge Re.1 per pulse as MCU (Metered call charges) for Voice Call Charges. Does that mean if I use webcam for video chatting will be charged Re.1 per pulse? more

Resolved Question: Why does my wireless router signal seem vary in the same location?

I have broadband via Sky and use the free wireless router they provided. I have no problem if I am very close to the router but if I am upstairs or in the garden I find that sometimes I either cant get a connection or if I do I lose it after a while. Is this because the router is faulty / poor quality or could it be my laptop (Macbook). Sometimes it feels like I am losing signal because of interference from a neighbours router signal but am not sure this is always the problem. I am often having to reinput the password to try to get the connection restored which can be frustrating. The distance is not far perhaps 4-5 metres. Advice appreciated more

Resolved Question: vodafone 3g broadband over charging you for exceeding the 5GB limit? when you haven't on yor meter?

ok so i have the vodafone 3G broadband now for bout 4 months and the basic payment is twenty euro a month for 5GB free download and if you exceed it vodafone will charge you extra for whatever you download after the 5GB limit fair enough. so i went over a few times myself but not by much but was getting bills of 50-80 euro a month. so this wasnt on so for the month of june i kept a close eye on how much was on the usage bar and made sure i wouldnt go over it and i didnt so i said that theres no way i will be over charged this time. bill arrives in the door...50 euro!! rang them up told them the story and they said my usage bar is 4 days behind theirs and just try to keep an eye on it. i mean their software is telling me on my laptop that im well within the free 5GB download for twenty euro but their system is four days ahead of mine and charging for 4 extra days. i said this wasnt good enough and not a fault on my side so they said what you could do is to check your usage online but it can be 2 days behind aswell not much better right so i said do me 1 better and they said you could ring us and ask us what your usage is and it will be fairly right. now when i ring vodafone i spend ages on the phone listening to some stupid song waiting to be ansered by a customer care assistant plus what time during the month will i ring, i mean do i have to guess when im near the limit? this service is a joke! more

Voting Question: What is wrong with my wireless internet connection?

In my home we use a BT home-hub wireless broadband. We have a computer in the study room right next to the hub, the internet is really fast here. My sister has a laptop which can access the internet at a reasonable speed, even at the bottom of the garden about 15 metres away. Then my computer, which is fairly old, which can hardly access the internet at all, and when it does, is EXTREMELY slow. My computer is in the room NEXT to the BT home-hub. I was wondering why the internet on my computer is so bad, and if there is anything I can do to improve the speed of the internet on my computer. Please help if you can =]sorry, i wasn't very clear. My computer is windows XP and is not a CRT moniter, its a flat screen LCD. It's old but not that old. Oh and my computer doesn't have an antenna, it must have something inside it which picks up the wireless internet connection. Maybe I can buy an antenna for it? more

Resolved Question: Can I use a meter, like a Fluke meter to test my internet connection?

I usually do not have any issues with my broadband service, however this evening the signal strength to my wireless adapter has been "very strong" one minute, and later I check it and it says "weak signal". My thought is that I may have a bad cable/connection on the other side of the router where the kids have been messing around. To be sure that I am getting a solid throughput, can I test this with the proper Fluke meter? And if so, which one? (Dad is an electrician he may have the right meter) more

Resolved Question: Do You know any easy-to-use program to measure how much I'm downloading in some period of time?

I'm looking for some "download meter" program for my parents who have basic knowledge about computing. They don't use internet too much (mostly Skype) and they have a broadband tariff with unlimited downloading which costs a bit. I'm looking for some program which will collect data how much they download in one month (approx), so I could choose some cheaper tariff with download limit. I'm looking for some very simple tool because I live in other country and can't supervise the process. more
