Broadband Phone Services Questions asked

Open Question: Major issues with Belkin Wireless router and Arris Broadband Modem.?

I'm going to have to explain this long story... For a long time, my internet service provider was Mediacom (a local ISP), and instead of getting the phone and broadband internet package, I just had internet with Mediacom and Vonage phone service. Everything was fine, except I have a laptop and always had to have the ethernet cord connect to my laptop from the modem if I wanted internet service; the Arris modem didn't provide wireless signal. A little over a month ago, I decided to get rid of Vonage phone service and get Mediacom phone service with internet for a good deal. That was fine and everything worked fine, except I was still barred to a cable connecting my laptop to the Arris broadband modem. So, I decided to get a Belkin N router (my Mediacom repair-guy suggested doing it this way). I was having major problems at first getting it figured out, but after contacting Belkin and Mediacom via phone, I had it figured out (resetting the Arris modem solved the connectivity issue). So, since then, everything has been just fine... that is until a few days ago. My laptop is Vista, so it acts a little funny sometimes, and I didn't really think anything of it. My internet would just randomly stop working (wirelessly), and I thought it was just something acting funny on Windows explorer, so I just restarted and it was fine (usually). But, 2 days ago, the internet stopped working altogether. We had a bad ice storm yesterday here in Illinois, and Mediacom wasn't taking phone calls, and I suspected that my internet issue was just due to the ice. But, my phone service stopped working as well, and my husband and I had to do a lot of connecting, reseting, restarting, etc. to get anything working again. So, here is the verdict: My internet now works while connected through ethernet cord, and phone works also. When I connect to the Belkin N Router, internet won't work on one of the computers (the one that the Wireless Router was NOT set up on) and phone service won't work either. I can't contact Mediacom, because they won't accept any phone calls because of all the outages due to the ice. I can judge that this is not an ice problem; it is a connectivity problem. What do I do??? more

Open Question: Why can't you sync a BT Yahoo accout with a Blackberry - an answer!?

I spent an hour on the phone with a chap direct from RIM support and I think that I now know the answer. If you have a British Telecom supplied “BT Yahoo” online account as supplied by British Telecom to all of its broadband customers, you cannot sync your online calendar with a Blackberry, any Blackberry. When the chap from RIM heard that no one at Vodafone had offered to put me through to RIM support despite four calls over the past two weeks to Vodafone’s customer support – apparently a free option open to new BB customers, he offered to help for free and waived the normal $49 support fee. Now that's what I call customer service. He really went out of his way to find a solution. After checking all of the settings in my Blackberry and the DTM we set up a dummy ordinary free Yahoo account and its calendar sync'd to my BB without any problem. So the problem is not with the Blackberry or the free version of Yahoo but with that strange creature 'BT Yahoo' - the sickly love child of two corporate entities who are renowned for lousy customer service and, Boy Oh Boy, is the BT Yahoo customer service lousy. Regrettably, I have ten years worth of calendar entries in my BT Yahoo calendar. When, on the sixth attempt, I got through through to the call centre in India, I asked if they could explain why an ordinary Yahoo account could sync with a Blackberry but a "BT Yahoo" could not. I was told that they don't support Yahoo “but it's called BT YAHOO” - Silence. “Yes but we don't support Yahoo and we don’t have any way of getting in touch with anyone at Yahoo” Sigh. The staff in the BT call centre are extraordinarily polite but have been given no authority beyond a few very limited problems with one’s actual broadband connection, to really help in any way. Hard to believe, but the only way to lodge a complaint with BT – a major telecoms company is to write a letter, stick a stamp on the envelope and post it to some nebulous address in Durham. Given the hours that I spent with the call centre in India, I have no faith that anyone would bother responding to a letter. Sigh. What a truly crappy company. Sadly - I can't get out of my BT contract for another year but may I advise anyone reading this to avoid BT like the pox and spend their money elsewhere. So am I feeling a little aggrieved? Yes. I am more than annoyed with Vodafone because when I bought this phone, I told the salesman that I had a BT Yahoo account and he told me that he knew of no syncing problems. I am annoyed with Vodafone’s customer service because they seem to be unaware of the issue and despite four attempts to solve it with them they could have put me in touch with the competent RIM support staff, and didn’t. And am I annoyed with BT Yahoo? Indeed I am. They do not have the first idea about customer service. So now, I’m stuck with Blackberry 9700 and can only use its e-mail features and because this has taken so long to sort out I’m now outside of Vodafone’s 28 day returns policy so the only way to cancel the contract is pay Vodafone £585. I give up. Caveat Emptor. I’m going back to my faithful Nokia 6310i and a written diary. Anybody want to buy a hardly used BB 9700? Regards, Newshound more

Open Question: would changing isp help?

i signed up for sky broadband (adsl)with sky tv and phone iam on the £17 per month deal we were told about 8mb/s when signing up for the deal the engineer said that in this area we get about 6mb/s we got 3.5mb/s from a few speed tests about 2 years ago, that was fine for my use but within the last 8 months it has become so slow and bogged down that p2p, gaming online, ftps and http pages take so long to load its like the stone age and to play games online like left 4 dead 2 is to laggy so i end up waiting til the early hours of the Morning like 2am to use at any speed so iam asking does this seam like the sky service is over subscribed and would changing isp help and could you recommend any with Unlimited or high usage limit sorry its so long and thanks in advance for your help more

Open Question: Bt phone line problem?

This beggars belief. My neighbour ordered a new phone so bt cut mine off and issued me a new number in her name. I lost my number and my broadband as a result. I spent over eight hours on the phone trying to get it sorted. The engineer came out and sorted hers but he cut me off altogether. I have now been told by bt that I have to order a new line and have a new number!! I also have to wait a month for an appointment. My wife works from home and needs Internet. Bt customer service just don't care at all!! I have made a complaint to bt but even they eventually hung up on me!! What can I do?My phone was working fine but they took over my line by mistake and issued a new number to it with my neighbour shown as the account holder. It's not a party line I am number 4 she is 4a it's a mistake but they say my number is now gone and that I have to start a new contract for a new phone number!!!!!!Ring bt?????? I have spent over eight hours on my work phone to bt!!! I have explained the situation to twenty two different people!!! BT customer service just don't care about customers. No one at bt has a clue and I can't speak to anyone that is actually interested in helping!!! So it's not helpful to suggest that I ring bt because I have time and time again!!!!!!!!! more

Resolved Question: Can a phone company harrass you for money everyday?

My husband applyed for Tiscali broadband about 5 yrs ago..but we were not happy with the service so we cancelled in the 15 days i think it is you can, its only been the last week or 2 we have been getting phone calls at 8pm or text messages constantly everyday, my husband has phoned them back (which is costing us money) to tell them he is not paying them.I have spoke to them myself and the bloke i spoke to said they can phone us and write to us once a day every day if they wanted its not harrassment, they can by law.Which myself i think it is aload of crap..can anyone tell me if we should go to seek legal advice and if this is wrong what they are doing. To fairfax, we've had no letters what so ever, thats whats puzzled us they've left it 5 yrs and ring us out the blue for money we supposedly owe them. And haven't a clue how they got our number as its ex-directory. more

Resolved Question: dial up internet service?

Voting Question: Virgin Broadband - hidden payment?

I am thinking about changing to Virgin Broadband as BT are useless in every way. Now, I've been looking at http://allyours.virginmedia.com/websales/product.do?id=3246 At the price section you see that the price is £15 for 3 months and then £20 after that. All fine and dandy, BUT! There is also "Plus a Virgin Phone line for £11 a month". For me to have Virgin Broadband with Fibre optic thighy, will I not require a Virgin Phone line? So would I have to pay £20 PLUS the cost of the phone line? Even tho I'm still using BT for my Land line? Am I just being silly or is this some kind of hidden payment they are trying to confuse customers with. Well, could anyone help me clear this up. I don't want to jump in bed with a hooker without knowing how much I'm paying for the her services. more

Resolved Question: What is the difference between netzero and broadband service?

I am looking to save money and need to find a way to cut the bills. I saw a commercial for net zero internet service and it says service is $9.95 and I went online and then it says, it is dial up service I have no idea what that is or what equipment you would need to have it. Do you get a modem or do you need to purchase one is it connected only to land line phone service, or do you buy new phone service? I use broadband triple play now for years and it costs almost $200 a month. I need to downgrade. more

Resolved Question: SHould I be Angry With My Sister?

She just cost me A LOT of money in a cell bill! She's 21 years old(Im 25), and she just recently moved back to our mom's home b/c she's been down on her luck with living on her own(well mostly living with an abusive, unemployed bf & she has a child)...She's never been able to keep her own cell phone on, & everytime she gets one, it gets turned off after a couple of months.. But she's always understood, that your minutes are limited during the day and free at night. At least I thought. Well, about a month ago, I added her to my single plan, and changed it to a family share, where we get 1800/day(free @ night)..this was more expensive for me, but I sacrificed in my monthly spending money to allow me to pay it. I explained to her that it was going to be really hard for me to pay for the entire bill alone(I also have broadband w/ them, but I just told her that to make her aware that it wasn't easy and once she got on her feet, a little bit toward her line would help). Ive been checking our minute usage as much as I can, and I really thought she would have known to not talk so much during the day. We discussed it a couple of months ago, about me adding her, and us sharing the minutes. So today, I find out she has used 1850 minutes in 2 1/2 weeks!!! and Ive only used 300(its .45cents per min)...Her execuse: I didn't know, and I forgot about the "daytime thing"...Though she has been going through a lot with her bf and moving back home, I don't know whether to be mad or not, & just blame myself for not checking sooner. I feel like she either has NO common sense & irresponsible or she just doesn't care about anyone but herself! To not think, "hey, cell phones are expensive if you talk a lot during the day!" VZ is not a cheap company, & they charge a lot w/ unlimited minutes, but I love their service, no drop calls, and the broadband, AND, ive never had to worry about going over b/c I dont talk like a 16 yearold high schooler on the phone anymore!! So should I be mad at myself for trusting her, and not watching over her, or is she to blame? Im so pissed right now, but Im keeping my anger in b/c I dont know where to direct it! more

Resolved Question: does anybody get any sense from bt or their services?

bt broadband never works and the bills are so confusing. we now steal our broadband service from our neighbours whilst paying bt for a service that doesn't work. can anybody tell me where i can get a service from that incorporates landline mobile phone and broadband for a reasonable price? i will ask as a seperate question. more

Resolved Question: Read This - Do you think this is a good or bad idea for the auto industry?

We saw it with cell phones and then televisions in the driver's view, accidents were what rose right along with entertainment value. Do you predict internet surfing will produce a similar effect? Do you think this is a good or bad idea for the auto industry? --quote--- Ford brings Wi-Fi to the highway Ford is making its cars into mobile Wi-Fi hot spots. The next generation of the Sync in-car entertainment and information system will use a USB mobile broadband modem to establish a secure wireless connection capable of supporting several devices simultaneously. The system will be available next year on selected models -- no word yet which ones -- and you won't need a subscription or hardware beyond the modem. "While you're driving to grandma's house, your spouse can be finishing the holiday shopping and the kids can be chatting with friends and updating their Facebook profiles," said Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas. "And you're not paying for yet another mobile subscription or piece of hardware because Ford will let you use technology you already have." Several automakers already offer in-car Internet access -- Japanese drivers have been using it since 1997 -- and many others are rushing to bring it to us. Ford's announcement follows General Motors' promise last week to make in-car connectivity available in seven models of trucks and SUVs. They're the latest automakers to bring the infobahn to the autobahn. Mercedes recently announced it has successfully tested in-vehicle Internet applications -- including web browsing, vehicle software updates and VOIP -- on a prototype 4G network. It follows BMW's Internet-connected iDrive system and Chrysler's Uconnect Web in-vehicle mobile hotspot. With so many automakers getting in on the action, there's a push to introduce hardware standards. Ford is taking a decidedly different approach, opting to allow consumers to plug in their own USB modem to get connected. General Motors, on the other hand, offers a dealer-installed system called Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile. It creates a Wi-Fi hot spot 300 feet in diameter around the vehicle, and GM claims the 3G network achieves speeds of up to 1.5 mbps. The hardware costs $199 after the $200 mail-in rebate, and the service costs $29 a month. Given how connected we are, it makes sense for automakers to put the Internet in our cars. The number of iPhones and other mobile devices being used to connect to the Internet jumped 75 percent in the third quarter of this year, according to JiWire Mobile Audiences Insights Report. Letting people log on from the road will be a big selling point among 20-something buyers, the so-called Millennials who have propelled much of Sync's success. Millennials will make up 28 percent of the driving population next year, a nine-point increase from 2004. Kids aside, Ford says interest in in-car connectivity is high among the general public, with one-third of people surveyed by the Consumer Electronics Association expressing interest in being able to check e-mail or surf the Web from the car --quote-- source.. http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/12/26/wired.ford.wi.fi/index.html more

Resolved Question: Thinking of AT&T High speed internet, anyone ever had it?

i hate Cricket and their false "3G Wireless Broadband". the crap is supposed to be fast, but why does it take an hour to download a 10MB file/song at only 4 kilobits a second? thats 50 kilobits slower than f***ing dial up!!! anyway, back to the question. i've been seeing these AT&T commericals all over the net, as well as TV saying you can get high speed internet (DSL i suppose) for only $20 a month, and no home phone required. i live an apartment, it was set up for home phone service when we moved here in 2003, the line jack in the dining room is ready, where this computer is. not sure about the bedrooms, but i wouldn't need the bedroom jacks anyway. now, my main asking here is, what all do i need? i have an ethernet card installed, several USB ports, Windows XP, a Pentium 4 processor at 1.3 GHz, 512MB RAM (its an old 2001 Compaq) i have several 4 pin phone lines, ethernet cables, a couple DSL modems from my collection (or will ATT supply one?). next, when i sign up for the service online, how long does it take for them to come out and hook up the phone lines at the phone pole outside the building, and does the setup/installation cost anything? also, if i decide to move, can i just have them move my service to my new residence? i've never done this before, never even had a land line phone, so any pointers/tips would be helpful, also, if you have this service, (AT&T), what do you think of it speed wise? thanks guys/gals more

Resolved Question: Wireless problems on O2 home broadband?

I've been with O2 for over a year and really never had a problem with them. However, a couple of weeks ago I moved my router from the living room to bedroom (no change in wires, I go phone socket>extension>filter>router which has been fine for over a year) and connected my partners pc to the router via ethernet. After that, the router began disconnecting several times a day- highly annoying since we're both online gamers. As a result, I finally contacted O2, who iirc basically reset my router to factory settings, which was fine for most of the day. However, this evening I began experiencing very frequent disconnects from my laptop, connected wirelessly. My computer was taking its sweet time to find the network and reconnect, and so I got on to O2 again, who took remote control and tried to fix the problem, to no avail, and I'm now stuck using the ethernet cable with it, as that works fine. The customer service guy said he thought it must be a problem with my network adapter, which seems strange to me considering that it started the same day that they fiddled with things to stop the disconnects. Also worth mentioning- there's a second laptop connected, which has no problems as far as I saw in the hour or so I had it on. If anyone can shed any light on what might be wrong, I'd be eternally grateful as this is driving me insane. Oh, and having said that ^^ the router just went offline a moment ago- no telling if it's the same problem as it has been though. Thank you in advanceJust to be clear, the router and phone are plugged into the filter, which is on the extension from the main phone socket. more

Hi guys, need help here. Not a tech guy so not really sure what happens. Tried calling customer service but they weren't really making sense. Planning to move places and terminating the contract (and probably get another service with better prices and quota lol), what happens to my phone? does it go back to normal with the same phone number? Voting Question: Is it possible to hook my cell phone up to my pc for use as a modem with netzero free dial up?

I have an LG cf360 AT&T cell phone with the USB cable. I was wondering if I can use it as a dial up modem without using bluetooth. I also don't want broadband since I don't have a data plan. I simply want to hook my cell phone up to my computer and use the AT&T voice network to establish a good old fashioned dial up connection. The ISP I intend to use is Net zero. I intend to use their free 10 hour a month plan. Would it be possible to do this with my USB cable and phone? Also, if it is possible, do you know where I can find the driver for my cf360? My computer will recognize it in mass storage or music sync mode, but for data service, my computer doesn't know what a cf360 is. I need help establishing an internet connection. My area is getting more wired by the day. I can't even check my school grades without going online. The days of using the library connection are over because of budget cuts. They're open crazy hours. I need my own connection without spending a fortune. Please help me out. Thanks! more

Voting Question: PLEASE READ EVERYTHING AND HELP ME IF YOU POSSIBLY CAN?

Alright, first of all, I have posted at least 3 or 4 questions very similar to this one that deal with the EXACT same problem. At random times, my computer loses its internet connection. Whenever I start up my computer, at random times I will have a box that pops up and asks me what service I want to connect to. As soon as this box pops up I know that I am not connected to the internet. There are options for Wireless, Broadband and Dial-up. I have DSL with a little black box with flashing lights (modem). What should I do when this box pops up? I usually click on connect to Broadband PPPoE. I click on this even though I don't know if I should and it always says connection failed. Well, in the bottom right of my screen, there is a little icon of two computers and the globe (representing the internet) and whenever I move my mouse over it when this happens it says: Currently Connected to: Unidentified network and that my access is local only. Whenever I don't have the connection problem, it says Currently Connected to Network 2 and that my access is local and internet. I have found a way to fix this problem temporarily by turning off my modem and unplugging it, shutting down my computer, turning the modem back on and waiting for the ADSL light to stop blinking and become solid (this is what my phone company's man they sent here to check it out said to do) and turn on my computer and I would have my connection back. Well tonight I tried this two different times and it didn't work but the third time it did. Why do I keep losing the connection like this? How do I stop this from happening or better yet how do I fix this when it does happen? more

Resolved Question: how do i find out if my phone line is working and help with sky?

I moved into a property last year which has phone points but I have never had BT connected as I had a contract phone with a good minutes allowance, I am now considering getting sky and broadband and note that i need a working bt line. i would prefer not to use bt for line rental (bad customer service in past) and was looking to use sky for line rental also. When going through the checkout process they ask for my land-line phone number, to check if services are available, but if i do not have the number what can i do, and will my land line still be connected to bt even after over a year of not being used? Voting Question: Does it do any harm to my wireless router if i continually cut it off and on ?

I have a linksys wireless G broadband router that is hooked up to a DSL Modem and sometimes i have problems whenever i am trying to sign in to youtube or signing up for a new you tube account and i would get messages like we require SMS verfication with a mobile phone number and what i would do is cut off my router for 1 minute and turn it back on. But everytime when i cut it off it gives me a new IP address and i am able to make a new youtube account, however my sister is bugging me because she believes i will damage our router if i continue to do this. Resolved Question: How can you tell if 3G is working on your mobile phone?

I just bought a blackberry and its internet service is working fine in that I can access the internet and can download mp3s. However, it does everything very slowly. To put things in perspective, the handset spent about five minutes trying to download a 1.0MB file then gave up. For this reason, I doubt that 3G is working. Our home connection broadband is at least 10x this speed. What do I have to do to set up 3G on my phone? If you have a blackberry and went through the same process please help me out :) more

Resolved Question: Is BSNL's WLL wireless unlimited internet @Rs.250 per month better than Tata Indicom Whiz wireless internet?

I m currently using Tata Indicom Whiz wireless internet. I dont find it good in terms of speed and cost-effective.Besidez the service, I find the rates very expensive than compared to BSNL wirless internet (WLL),which is at Rs.250 + rs 180 for phone rent = Rs.430 per month. I m currently in theTata Indicom Whiz Rs.325 plan which gives me 30 hours of free internet after which I ll be charged 50p/minute during day time and 25p/minute from 0200-0800 hrs. I dont think Tata Indicom works for me. I came to know about BSNL's WLL wireless unlimited internet @Rs.250. I want answers to the following questions - 1.Is the internet speed better than Tata Indicom Whiz? 2.What is the download speed? The download speed for Tata Indicom Whiz ranges from 10Kb to 16kb.On using Download Accelerator,it ranges from 18kb-25kb,but it isnt that fast. Of course,I do understand that it is not broadband. 3.Since its unlimited internet at Rs.430 per month [Rs.250 + Rs.180(phone rent)],is there extra charge for downloading content from the web like audio or video files or watching YouTube Videos? 4.I have read on many forums that BSNL's WLL wireless unlimited internet @Rs.250 per month is cheap and best. Is it the best in terms of wireless internet? Hope you will answer my questions. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: The more I hear about 0bama's Net Neutrality, the better I like it. You?

FCC Votes to Begin Crafting `Net Neutrality' Rules Oct 22 12:42 PM US/Eastern By JOELLE TESSLER AP Technology Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal regulators took an important step Thursday toward prohibiting broadband providers from favoring or discriminating against certain kinds of Internet traffic. Despite the concerns of telecommunications companies and the agency's two Republicans, the Federal Communications Commission voted to begin writing so-called "network neutrality" regulations. Proponents say the rules would prevent phone and cable companies from abusing their control over the market for broadband access. FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski said regulations are needed to ensure that broadband subscribers can access all legal Web sites and services, including Internet calling applications and video sites that compete with the broadband companies' core businesses. "Internet users should always have the final say about their online service, whether it's the software, applications or services they choose, or the networks and hardware they use to the connect to the Internet," Genachowski said. The FCC's two other Democrats voted to support his plan. The agency's two Republican commissioners voted merely to start the formal rule-making process, but said they are opposed to the substance of Genachowski's proposal. Republican Commissioner Robert McDowell said he remains unconvinced that broadband providers are engaging in widespread anticompetitive behavior that requires government intervention. "I do not share the majority's view that the Internet is showing breaks and cracks, nor do I believe that the government is the best tool to fix it," he said. Next up for the FCC is to actually craft the rules, with a vote on whether to adopt them expected to come by next summer. That would culminate a five-year debate in Washington that has pitted Internet companies such as Google Inc. against some of the biggest phone and cable companies—including AT&T Inc., Verizon Communications Inc. and Comcast Corp. The broadband providers insist they need flexibility, free from government intervention, to keep their networks running smoothly. They want to ensure that high-bandwidth applications such as YouTube videos don't hog too much capacity and impede other traffic, like e-mail and online searches. They also say that net neutrality regulations would discourage them from expanding and upgrading their networks. "We continue to hope that any rules adopted by the commission will not harm the investment and innovation that has made the Internet what it is today and that will make it even greater tomorrow," Comcast Executive Vice President David L. Cohen said in a statement. But companies such as Google, Amazon.com Inc., eBay Inc.'s Skype and Facebook Inc. argue that without such rules, the broadband companies will become online gatekeepers that can prioritize their own online services or those of their business partners—and potentially put others at a disadvantage. Markham Erickson, executive director of the Open Internet Coalition, called Thursday's vote "the first step toward ... creating a framework that promotes innovation and consumer choice on the Internet." The Open Internet Coalition represents public interest groups and big Internet companies, including Google, Amazon and eBay. Genachowski's plan calls for the agency to formally adopt four broadband principles that have guided the FCC's enforcement of communications laws on a case-by-case basis. Those principles state that network operators must allow subscribers to access all online content, applications, services and devices as long as they are legal. The FCC relied on those guidelines last year when it ordered Comcast to stop blocking subscribers from using an online file-sharing service called BitTorrent, which is used to transfer big files such as online video. Comcast is challenging the FCC ruling in court. Genachowski also wants the FCC to adopt two additional principles that would bar broadband providers from discriminating against particular content or applications and require them to disclose network management practices. And he is seeking to apply all six rules across all types of broadband networks, including wireless systems, which have been largely unregulated. "The time is now to move forward with consideration of fair and reasonable rules of the road," Genachowski said Thursday. "It would be a serious failure of responsibility not to consider such rules, for that would be gambling with the most important technological innovation of our time." Resolved Question: Looking for top rated ISP provider Ft Lauderdale FL?

Hello, I need to change my ISP provider from Comcast to someone new. I need to have a bundled service for a landline home phone and the internet. Money is tight right now but I need a good ISP service. Fast dial-up, or broadband, and excellent customer tech support. They need to also be flexible with billing ex: (if you are a little late with your bill they will not automatically shut you off.) A little grace period. Also any websites that do comparisons. Second question can I keep my old email address, that I use to look for jobs, subscriptions, I am all over the place. Any suggestions appreciated. Anyone want to share their experiences with their current provider good, bad, ugly. Thanks more

Resolved Question: are 3 network correct in saying I have no options?

I was kinda coaxed into getting both a pay monthly mobile broadband dongle and phone. I only wanted to internet but the salesman said if I signed up today (bank hol) as it was the last day of the offer he would throw in a phone contract with monthly rental discount on both the phone and internet and put them both on hold for 30 days so the contracts dont start straight away. I took this offfer up on the mobile phone contract to give me enough time to sort out my current contract with another network. now my phone contract began today. I had not opened the phone or used it. it is a tocco touch screen and it is diabolical. I was told it was easy to use and I would have no probs with it. I called customer services and they said the 14 day money back/cancellation fee doesnt apply to people buying instore so therefore I have no cooling off period. I was told to call the store direct and ask for an exchange of phone. I called the store and they said I could have exchanged it within 28 days of obtaining the phone but as I was 2 days out because of the 30 day hold I had no options but to stick with this contract and stupid phone for 2 years. I argued that none of this was explained to me and he said that I should have seen the a4 poster on the wall of the shop. I also argued that the 28 days exchange policy shouldnt start until the contract actually begins because i pysically could not use the phone. he again said I was wrong. I cant complain via their website as thee is no option, its just self help crap. i have called CS three times today and they dont understand my point yet keep telling me they understand. the call centre is in india. do you think Ihave a valid arguement or not? more

Resolved Question: When you move house, and keep the same phone number, does your current broadband service stay on the line?

I'm moving house this week, and have opted to change from aol to sky broadband. We have a BT landline, which is being transferred to the new house, and keeping the same number. Sky stated that I wouldnt need a MAC code, and they could just go ahead with it. Aol are saying that it takes 14 days to remove aol from the phone line by BT and that sky will not work for 14 days. Is this the case? I would have thought as it's a new line, it wouldn't work like that? any ideas? more

Voting Question: Comcast just jacked up my Internet/Phone bundle by $24 a month. Time for a new ISP? Advice?

I've had a Comcast Internet (6MB speed) and Phone (unlimited nationwide) bundle costing $75 per month, but my new bill came and they've increased my payment to $99. When I called asking why a woman told me I was paying the "promotional rate," which expired last month. I guess they got me, but now I'm mad! I can't continue paying the increase. The woman told me if I downgrade Internet speed to 1MB my bill would be even less--$68, but I don't want to loose my current bandwidth. I looked into Qwest but their Internet/Phone bundles are horrible compared to what I'm paying for Comcast. Even if I try splitting the Internet and Phone services between Comcast and Qwest I can't get a better deal. Somebody help! It seems Comcast and Qwest are my only options. Aren't there other companies offering Broadband phone/Internet bundles that operate nationwide (as opposed to the ones that are only in specific areas) ?Colanth: Yes. Switch between Qwest and Comcast every year is what I was thinking, but it turns out an equivalent bundle from Qwest with nationwide calling and at least 6MB Internet is $89 plus taxes, surcharges, and the initial setup fees, so it works out roughly the same as the increased Comcast rate. I can't find a decent Qwest promotion at the moment. more

Resolved Question: Does Sky have the worst customer service ever?

When we joined they offered us £50 of vouchers as an incentive, but as soon as everything was installed they said that they didn't have that on record and would not be offering us the vouchers anymore. Also, their services (broadband and phone) are awful. Is Sky the worst company ever for customer services? more

Resolved Question: How do you set up a redirect service from your landline onto your VOIP phone such as Skype?

I have asked a few questions regarding a network between my house and office. I have a traditional analogue phone in my house but have no way of placing it in my office without loads of work. A cat5 cable already exists between my house and office. I use a normal phone with Eircom and want all calls redirected onto a phone linked to my PC all on my broadband and cat5e network. Is this possible and do you think it is an easy thing to do? more

Resolved Question: Question about Wireless Internet?

Hi, I'm 17 and I live in England and I am intending to purchase a laptop soon and use wireless broadband, however, my family currently uses a shared computer, and that only has one Ethernet cable connected to it which provides our current broadband. We are with Virgin Media so I was wondering is there anyway we can change our service from a wired connection to a wireless connection? Would we have to call up Virgin Media or do we just have to buy a wireless router? Also, would I be able to use our wireless internet at home to access the internet from a phone which requires Wi-Fi?Also, would be great if anyone could give their opinions on what expense I should be looking at when purchasing a router, and what brands are the best to get, thanks! more

Resolved Question: Can I set up Wi-Fi in my home without having a computer?

I would like to create Wi-Fi access in my home for when my grandchildren come to visit, so they can use their iPOD touches. I do not have a computer anymore, but I still have the DSL "boxes" on my phone jacks, and yes, they are still active! I never cancelled my service because I plan on eventually getting a new desktop. My daughter has a wireless router that she said may work without a computer, but I'm not sure what to do, or if it will. It is a linksys Wireless G Broadband Router 2.4Ghz. ANY assistance would be very much appreciated! Thanks for the great answers so far! I guess my main question is HOW do I do it? Do I just plug it into the phone line and that is that? My daughter said that it IS active, if that is of any help, but she doesn't know how to plug it in without a computer. more
