well here is the story... I was forced to move and now have no access to DSL, Broadband, or HighSpeed internet only Dial-Up and Satellite. I tryed Dial-Up but that gives me about 300 ping when i play. And i am thinking of getting Satellite but i am not sure. They say it is faster than Dial-up but i need to know how much it will lower my ping. The game is called TeeWorlds if that helps. If you have satellite internet then i ask a favor if you could download it and tell me how much ping you have... that would be the biggest help. :D Thank You moreResolved Question: Question about DirecTV?
Right now we get Jet Broadband cable (local cable company) but we are switching to DirecTV satellite on Friday. Also we are changing to Verizon for internet. I know when the workers come to install it, they will probably have to mess with our computer. Will they have to delete all our computer's memory, like all our files, documents, itunes stuff, Sims 2 stuff, etc.? Please tell me, because if so, I'll try to get my dad to call it off:) If our stuff will be fine, and all they have to do is unplug or move our computer, or take off our internet, that's ok. moreResolved Question: How bad is dial-up Internet? Okay, here's the deal. I'm fixing to start working from home for an internet help desk. I'm trying to figure out if my internet connection will work, and I'm having an argument with my aunt about it. I will be working from my laptop via wireless internet, but have to use a VOIP phone. The specs call for: -Broadband Internet connection (DSL and cable but not satellite, dial-up and wireless. A wireless network inside the home is allowed for the computer but not for the IP phone) -Power over Ethernet injector or other device capable of powering the Inter-tel 8622 IP keyset (which is a Low-Power 15.4W IEEE 802.3af device) -Network device capable of providing internet connection to 2 or more devices via Ethernet (DSL modem with router capabilities, router or switch) We have a box in our window that receives a wireless transmission and it is connected to a power over ethernet injector which then runs into a wireless modem. We have it connected to a wireless modem because the port on the desktop computer is broken so we cannot have it "hard-wired" to it. I need to know that, if I was to get this job, would I need to purchase internet via DSL or cable to use the phone.would we be able to run the laptop off the wireless internet and then run the VOIP phone off of a ClearWire modem? like "hard-wire" the phone to the ClearWire modem? moreResolved Question: Help!I have intermittent internet connection, what do i do?

I've lived in a secluded area for a while now, and I've had Hughesnet's Home plan (1mbps with limit of 200mb, and once those are all used up, speed drops to 56kbps). Well, we are building a new house not far from our house right now, and we still don't get broadband or anything like that. Well, I've looked up something called Propel Accelerator for Dial-up, and I like what I see. So the question is. Should I get Hughesnets Home plan again? (1mbps with limit of 200mb, and once those are all used up, speed drops to 56kbps) Or. Should I get dial-up with the Propel Accelerator? (around 450kbps-500kbps at a continuous pace) Also, I would like to play WoW with low latency/lag and without many problems. Which would be best for that? The area is McDermott, Ohio. We are in range for Verizon, but the landlines are too old to handle Verizon around my area. moreVoting Question: Gamer needs internet!?
I play online games through my x-box a lot. I am moving to a rural area where my only options are satellite or wireless broadband through a phone company. Which is my best option? moreResolved Question: Has anyone else heard of open range communications?
This company was given $374 million from the federal gov't to expand broadband coverage into rural areas unserved by DSL or cable broadband. They started back in 3Q of '09 to start this project. Trouble is, there website is a joke and there customer service consists of about 3 people who cannot tell you where they service nor provide anything on their map of where they service. I also received an ad call from the retailer ad looking for sales reps for satellite TV sales i posted on craigslist from a kid in arkansas who said they were only paying him $20 a sale. The girl in there customer service dept finally told me, after me grilling her for answers, that they service most of there home state of colorado, a small tricket of alabama and one tiny community in arkansas. There plan in there website calls for a 5 year plan to cover 573 communities and 6 million subs. It's been a year and they've acheived maybe 5% according to where the girl told me they covered. Also, the kid who called me upset about them told me that they were down to himself and one other sales rep because the product was only available in a competitve ISP market where people have been able to get HSI thru not only the cable company, but DSL thru the telco. So...........It seems now that a company can borrow 1/3 of a billion dollars of funds that our nation doesn't have to be just another ISP in a small town, totally negating the sole purpose of the stimulus funds to bring INTERNET TO UNSERVICED RURAL AREAS. Meanwhile we have a no named company, that you'd have to dig up to find anything about, operating on minuscule overhead creating barely any jobs and not providing internet access to the proposed target holding 1/3 of a cool billion. BTW, this ingenious technology is just 4G wimax that's set up on cell phone towers with a 2-3 mile radius. Sound familiar. Clear wimax. Accept they used private funds. Not tax dollars. I guess i don't really have a question folks. Just wanted to share this info with my fellow taxpayers. Once again, the name of the company is OPEN RANGE COMMUNICATIONS! in colorado. Please read the entire post and then check out the company on a google search before commenting if you're going to give a serious response to my post. Thanks for reading my justifiable rant folks. P.S. Working class taxpayer=Swindled and Scammed moreResolved Question: Portable satellite internet access?
Hi folks, I know almost nothing about the military. Sorry about that. And I don't know much more about satellite technology. However, I'm writing a screenplay and would like to put a soldier character in a position which is reasonably plausible, and give him some dialogue which sounds reasonably authentic. I'd be grateful for any help. Here's the situation: The soldier is in Kandahar in Afghanistan. He's separated from the military, the base, any other soldiers, etc., but has some technical equipment with him. Now, I read online that soldiers, at least in the Kandahar base, do have internet access via satellite, courtesy of a company called TS2, which sells apparently relevant products called iDirect Evolution (Intelsat), LinkStar (NSS6), iDirect Infinity (Intelsat) and Inmarsat personal service (Inmarsat BGAN). (I pasted all those in, it's gibberish to me.) I realize all those things may be limited to the base. What I WANT, though, as a screenwriter, is for this soldier to be able to get satellite internet access in a fleabag hotel in Kandahar where he's holed up. (As far as I can tell, hotels in Kandahar are pretty primitive, and don't offer internet access, let along broadband or anything faster.) Is it at all possible for him, in the hotel, to access the internet using the military's system? Or is that just ludicrous? (Not that that would stop Hollywood from doing it anyway, of course.) If it is just ridiculous, I'd welcome any suggestions as to how this soldier might get high-speed internet access, out on his own. Bonus question: To the extent you have any possibly workable thoughts on this, I'd love guidance as to how someone might describe it quickly and conversationally. You know, like "no problem, I have a WHOQUACK, I can use that to CATMEOW a DOGBARK via SNIDELY." Thanks very much for any thoughts! Oss moreVoting Question: Broadband in the country?
I need internet! Me and my girlfriend just moved into a house about 3 miles outside of Verizon's DSL area. We are both gamers, playing Xbox live and World of Warcraft, so Satellite and Dial-up are not options. We barely get cell phone service, windstream doesn't provide to this area, and Verizon runs me around in circles when I ask them about IDSN. Are there any other alternatives? On another note, about a month ago, I saw verizon trucks running a big thick wire down all the way down the road, but when I called the 800 number, they didn't know what I was talking about. Could this be a DSL line? If so, how long would it take for them to start giving DSL to this road? Serious answers only please =) and thank you. moreVoting Question: What would be the best internet option for me?
I live in the middle of no where. I can't see any towers, and there are no broadband lines running through here. So because of that, I'm limited to satellite and dial-up. What I want out of my internet is the ability to play MMOGs. The satellite I currently have gives huge lag time in games like WoW, GuildWars and pretty much any other online games I play. I used to have a dial-up that was actually considerably better than the satellite--but they are no longer in business, and the last dial-up I tried wasn't quite as fast. (Note: I've tried tunneling and it gave me little success.) moreResolved Question: Why can I not connect to the internet at all?
I have tried connecting to several wireless networks and a physical broadband connection and have failed to get connected to the internet on both browsers (Firefox, IE) My computer tells me that I am connected to the networks, even telling me that it cannot find anything wrong with the connections, but no program dependent on the internet will work. Skype, iTunes, Sony store, etc. I also cannot access any webpages, with FireFox saying that it has a "Network Timeout" I'm on my last nerve. I recently got a job that requires me to have internet on the go, and I am frustrated like you wont believe. I'm contemplating taking my laptop to be looked at, but I'm worried about the cost. I've been using satellite internet for a while now; and now I want upgrade to something that could be used for fast online gaming;the only thing is is that I live out in the middle of nowhere where dail-up, satellite, and possibly wireless internet are the only options. Help please.?
OK before anybody says PPPoE it's not available to me so says my ISP. They gave me my PPPoE username and password but it doesn't work because it's not available for some reason. So any way I'm with a crap broadband company because I live in a rural area and it's the only broadband we can get that's not satellite. Now the speed is not the issue I just want to be able to play with friends. I tried putting the PS3 in a DMZ server and that didn't work. One day I took out the WAN cable from the router and stuck it in the PS3 and the speed was much better however I still couldn't connect to my friends. This makes no sense to me I was connected directly to the source of the internet and it still didn't work. I have one friend whom I can connect with because he has an open NAT type. Anyway now I run the WAN into a switch and then have two wires going out from that. One to the PS3 and one to the router so I can get better speeds. Here's the main part, while at my girlfriends house, I changed her NAT type on the router from secured to open and hey presto I had my open connection so by any chance if I got her router and did the same thing with it, would work for me? moreResolved Question: itunes cannot connect, neither can msn or avg or anything!?

I am moving to an apartment next month and I just found out that if I want tv/internet I HAVE to get satellite through DirectTV and I HAVE to get DSL internet through Qwest. I don't want satellite because I don't want to be tied to a contract. I know you can go month to month with them but it is too expensive. I would also be willing to forget tv and just get a netflix subscription and have it stream to my tv but that requires a broadband internet connection- and they are making me get DSL if I want internet. I spoke with Comcast (who is the cable company assigned to the area) and they said that although they are assigned to the area they do not have permission from the apartment complex to install there. I know the FCC prevents apartments from discriminating against satellites but is there a similar rule for discriminating against cable? Any advice or thoughts?Ok I didn't know broadband and DSL are the same thing! Well then at least I know I can do the netflix thing. But I would still rather get cable and not be forced into Satellite. To Wildcat: I am also a property manager and that is how I know about the law that says apartments have to let you hook up a satellite. I honestly don't know whats the problem, I've downloaded every Anti-virus to Systamatic, AVG, Norton and to computer cleaners such as CCleaner, SuperAntivirus, Obit-Security etc. But nothing speeds this computer up nor find a threatening virus with in it. I don't know if its a Worm lying doormat with in the registry that slows it, or the registry is just damaged by previous viruses. Im from the south texas area and ive have my current connection with criket wireless (http://www.mycricket.com/broadband) for about a year now, and after a year the speed of the internet has seriously gone down. At peak times the connection is slower than dial up and im still paying about 4x what dial up would cost me. I already talked to customer support and it sounds like its because a lot of other people in my area have it too is why its slowing me down so much, but im pretty much fed up with it. Ive been looking into other ISPs, but it looks like all i can get is DirectTV internet or Dishnetwork internet. They both seems to get the internet from the same place. My satellite recently went to hell and i have no broadband, and i recently just got modern warfare 2. there is still a single player mode right? i see 1-4 players on the back so i assume that means me and 3 other friends can still play without going on the internet, and get in some kind of other mode right? that me and my friends can still play in.( i have a ps3 by the way, dont know if that makes a difference) thanks! moreVoting Question: Can you play PS3 online with Mi-Fi?
I'm not asking whether you can sign on using wi-fi, I'm asking whether Mi-Fi will be fast enough to play online. I already have high speed satellite internet which won't work because of the delay it takes for the signal to reach the satellite so I need to know if Mi-Fi will have the same delay. If Mi-Fi doesn't work, does anyone have any solutions to online gaming for someone that lives where they cannot get broadband? moreResolved Question: (HELP!) If I live out in the sticks and already have satellite Internet, is there a way I can change..?
Change my provider WITHOUT the $300 or more hardware switch? My parents made the mistake of buying WildBlue Internet, and I've been regretting it ever since. I don't know if I can convince them to change, because "it works for them", but I want to know my options if I can. For specific info, I live in Swiss Valley in Dubuque, IA. Neither AT&T or Verizon run out here--they're both broadband based services, and the nearest broadband box is twenty miles out--in Peosta. No line is going to be run down our road for a while--but I can't STAND Dial-Up. Unless I've misinterpreted something about how the real high-speed networks work, is there anything else I can do? moreResolved Question: Can I use my laptop as a wireless router?
For reasons not to get into here, I cannot get internet service where I live. I am looking at getting satellite internet or possibly go with a mobile broadband card from a cellular company (Verizon). If I get a mobile broadband card for my laptop, can I use my laptop as a wireless router for the other computers in my house? moreResolved Question: I just moved and can't find any internet but satellite, please help!?
I just moved to Chattaroy, Washington (zip 99003) and need something other than satellite for my MagicJack and my husband's wii. I can't find any cable providers and don't know much about internet. We need a high speed connection to get any online games working for my husband, and while our satellite is "high speed", it's not good enough for what we want to do. Is there any other way to get high speed in my area? I know there are several connection types and such, but don't know what all is needed. The problem is that we pretty much live in the middle of nowhere. Please help us! First person to give us a provider out here will be given best answer. I've already tried Comcast and Time Warner, and it's not out here. Also, these providers (not like we can find them here anyway) don't work well with the wii, so anything else not satellite would be great! Thanks! Providers that wii doesn't support: Alltel EVDO AOL (America Online) All types AT&T Dial-up, AT&T 3G BroadbandConnect Clearwire Pre WiMax Commspeed MMDS Earthlink Dial-up, Satellite Future Technologies Wireless Hughes (HughesNet) Satellite Netcaster Satellite Northboone Wireless Seanet Dial-up Sprint/EMBARQ EVDO SpyTec Satellite Wireless Beehive Wireless T-Mobile Cellular Utah Broadband/MetroBridge Networks Wireless Verizon Cellular Vianet All types WildBlue Satellite Xplornet Wireless moreResolved Question: How can I find out if Wireless Broadband Internet is available in my area? And whats the fastest?
I'm currently on Satellite internet with WildBlue, it sucks and I need to upgrade. Its a 1.5 and it feels like a dial-up connection. DSL and Cable internet is not available where I live. Is there any alternative to my problem? moreResolved Question: Is my network setup keeping me from doing certain things on Xbox Live?
I've been having a little bit of a problem lately with my internet connection. It really just started to get bad with it and I can't stand it anymore. The other night I was playing Gears of War 2 multiplayer all night long with my cousin and there were no matchmaking problems at all. But all of a sudden last night I put in Gears of War 2 and played 1 quick game with no problems and all of a sudden after that I haven't been able to find a matchmaking game. Sometimes if I let it sit there for about 15 to 20 minutes it will sometimes find a match. And also sometimes I can't connect to my friends parties and connect to invited games from them. My setup consist of this as best as I know since it is a wireless broadband internet that is actually very fast and never slow. The signal comes from satellite device that is connected outside on roof. It goes from that to a white Tranzeo brand device that I looked up on the internet and found out it is a surge protection board and from that to my Linksys Cisco 5 port 10/100 switch. Linked to that is my mom and dads computer in another room, my laptop, xbox 360, and also my cousins xbox 360. Also my xbox live test connection always tells me that there is a NAT problem but how can there be a NAT problem if I don't even have a router. The company that installed this internet didn't setup a router for some reason. I guess this internet didn't need one or something. TOTALLY confused on this since I really know nothing on wireless internet setups. I wasn't here when the person installed it as I was away in basic training for Army at the time and my mom and dad just basically don't understand nothing bout computer and network setups. And the funny thing is is I was learning networking in the Army till I got out. Shows I didn't learn much by me posting this huh? LOL! Please someone that knows anything about this stuff help me out. Been stuck on this problem for at least 6 months now. And by the way I've been searching for players in Gears of War 2 for the whole time I've posted this. Hopefully it's just Gears! moreResolved Question: Broadband Internet Anywhere?
I recently moved to an area with no cable. I am looking for a product that will give me fast speeds for gaming (specifically my PS3). Does such a product exist? I keep hearing about a Verizon Broadband card, but I don't know if it's fast enough or can be used with the PS3. I'm also pretty certain it has a upload/download cap. Is there anything else? Satellite sucks the big one. :/I already have satellite - HughesNet It is the worst service in the world. It is extremely slow even without the latency (which kills gaming) and they lock you out after you reach a ridiculously low cap. moreResolved Question: How well does Verizon Wireless broadband work?
I live in the country and my only options for internet are Verizon wireless broadband or Hughes net satellite internet. I'm leaning toward Verizon right now. I get decent Verizon cell phone reception (2 bars inside) and I'm usually a pretty light user, no gaming or music downloading but I do stream video. I was wondering if anyone could give me comments on either of these options. moreTop Broadband Satellite Internet Links
