Resolved Question: Can my apartment complex force me to get satellite?

I am moving to an apartment next month and I just found out that if I want tv/internet I HAVE to get satellite through DirectTV and I HAVE to get DSL internet through Qwest. I don't want satellite because I don't want to be tied to a contract. I know you can go month to month with them but it is too expensive. I would also be willing to forget tv and just get a netflix subscription and have it stream to my tv but that requires a broadband internet connection- and they are making me get DSL if I want internet. I spoke with Comcast (who is the cable company assigned to the area) and they said that although they are assigned to the area they do not have permission from the apartment complex to install there. I know the FCC prevents apartments from discriminating against satellites but is there a similar rule for discriminating against cable? Any advice or thoughts?Ok I didn't know broadband and DSL are the same thing! Well then at least I know I can do the netflix thing. But I would still rather get cable and not be forced into Satellite. To Wildcat: I am also a property manager and that is how I know about the law that says apartments have to let you hook up a satellite. You can read about it here: http://www.allbusiness.com/real-estate-rental-leasing/real-activities-related-to/316173-1.html more

Resolved Question: Can a Computer virus damage your registry beyond repair?

Please excuse my ignorance if that sounded stupid, but I own a Toshiba Satellite Laptop 2006 Windows XP (if that helps), and its extremely slow (broadband internet, start menu, everything), if there was a level beyond extremely slow, this computer is it. I honestly don't know whats the problem, I've downloaded every Anti-virus to Systamatic, AVG, Norton and to computer cleaners such as CCleaner, SuperAntivirus, Obit-Security etc. But nothing speeds this computer up nor find a threatening virus with in it. I don't know if its a Worm lying doormat with in the registry that slows it, or the registry is just damaged by previous viruses. I been thinking about taking to the geek squad and letting them re-vamp it. I really don't know what to do, If any one could give me any advice on what steps to take I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you. more

Resolved Question: Will an Ipod Touch let me download any file, that I can later transfer to another computer?

I currently live in the country without access to anything but dial-up (I've exhausted my options on alternatives, from mobile broadband to satellite). I am considering purchasing an iPod Touch for it's Wi-Fi capabilities for when I go to restaurants and stuff. I would like to know if the iPod is capable of downloading files that it is not capable of playing or understanding what to do with. For instance am I able to download an .exe file off a website to the iPod Touch's hard drive, even though the iPod Touch wouldn't know how to install it or what to do with it, so that I could transfer it to my home PC at a later time. The same thing for any file type (.bin, .rar, .mkv) that is direct download via HTTP. If so, this would be a major convenience over carrying a netbook or laptop everywhere. If so, does anybody happen to know what folder it is saved to? more

Voting Question: high speed internet help? and suggestions....?

Okay.. So I've had dial up at my house for years because I don't have a lot of high speed internet providers. In riverside, Ca. I can't get DSL from at&t or verizon fios. They're not in my area. The only thing I can get is charter cable but they're cust. Service sucks. And I'd had problems with them before. Is there anyone else that can give me reliable high speed? I'm looking into mobile broadband but it has usage caps... And satellite kinda seems pricey and unreliable... Anyone have any suggestions? Any ideas? And companies they recommend? more

Voting Question: My laptop won't detect any wireless networks. How do I fix this?

When i try to connect to the internet on my toshiba satellite laptop, it does not detect any wireless devices. The wireless switch is on, and is my wireless internet connection, which is broadcasting as i can connect to the internet on my phone. I have McAfee security, and i have been told it may be something to do with this. Also, when i try to set up a wireless network, there is no option for wireless, only for broadband and dial-up. Resolved Question: Satellite communications - how to reduce costs for customers?

I think in the future the cost of satellite services will go down and that way more people will be able to afford it. Voting Question: Running out of internet options?

Im from the south texas area and ive have my current connection with criket wireless (http://www.mycricket.com/broadband) for about a year now, and after a year the speed of the internet has seriously gone down. At peak times the connection is slower than dial up and im still paying about 4x what dial up would cost me. I already talked to customer support and it sounds like its because a lot of other people in my area have it too is why its slowing me down so much, but im pretty much fed up with it. Ive been looking into other ISPs, but it looks like all i can get is DirectTV internet or Dishnetwork internet. They both seems to get the internet from the same place. Im looking to get better internet for gaming on my PC and Xbox for now so my question is, is there anyone that is a current customer of wireless satellite internet that has anything good to say about it? more

My satellite recently went to hell and i have no broadband, and i recently just got modern warfare 2. there is still a single player mode right? i see 1-4 players on the back so i assume that means me and 3 other friends can still play without going on the internet, and get in some kind of other mode right? that me and my friends can still play in.( i have a ps3 by the way, dont know if that makes a difference) thanks! more

Resolved Question: Is comcast any good? Does it work Well for anyone?

I'm pretty much stuck with them or verizon mobile broadband, which has a 5 gig limit, too small for me. I use dial-up now. I could try satellite, but I see terrible reviews of them and they have a small limit too. So is Comcast as terrible as some say it is, or does it work OK for you?Well, I live in a rural area near pittsburgh. To the best of my knowledge, it's stay with dialup, get comcast cable, go with hughesnet satellite, or use mobile broadband, which is a cell phone signal, and all providers have a 5 gig limit. more

Voting Question: Can you play PS3 online with Mi-Fi?

I'm not asking whether you can sign on using wi-fi, I'm asking whether Mi-Fi will be fast enough to play online. I already have high speed satellite internet which won't work because of the delay it takes for the signal to reach the satellite so I need to know if Mi-Fi will have the same delay. If Mi-Fi doesn't work, does anyone have any solutions to online gaming for someone that lives where they cannot get broadband? more

Voting Question: (HELP!) If I live out in the sticks and already have satellite Internet, is there a way I can change..?

Change my provider WITHOUT the $300 or more hardware switch? My parents made the mistake of buying WildBlue Internet, and I've been regretting it ever since. I don't know if I can convince them to change, because "it works for them", but I want to know my options if I can. For specific info, I live in Swiss Valley in Dubuque, IA. Neither AT&T or Verizon run out here--they're both broadband based services, and the nearest broadband box is twenty miles out--in Peosta. No line is going to be run down our road for a while--but I can't STAND Dial-Up. Unless I've misinterpreted something about how the real high-speed networks work, is there anything else I can do? more

Voting Question: Why do I have to reinstall my broadband dongle every time I switch on my laptop?

I have an older Toshiba Satellite Pro 2100 laptop & though I installed a T mobile broadband dongle I have to reinstall it each time I switch on the laptop. I look in device manager to roll back the drivers instead but it gives the message ..'no drivers backed up for this device'. Also now the names of all files & programs starting with the letter 'P' highlight rapidly one after another & I can only open whichever highlights at the time I select something else! The letter 'P' also writes itself endlessly in search bars or log in panels. It can be stopped by keeping delete or control pressed. In device manager, 'PCI' modem is found as a problem item & tries to install automatically when i switch on the laptop. This also has no drivers backed up & I don't have a PCI modem. All this is very frustrating & thankfully the thing with the letter 'P' is only intermittent. Can anyone help please more

Voting Question: Using a directional antenna to get broadband to a rural area?

High speed isn't available at our house, i believe i have tried everything. We have tried DSL, Cable, Wisp, and Satellite.(If there is anything i have missed feel free to add it) I have read bits and pieces of people saying it's possible to set up a directional antenna from our house to another house nearby with high speed. Our friends down the road (2.1km) away have high speed and are willing to run a extra line their house and put a antenna on the roof. Is there anyway to make this work? If not directional antennas is there any way to get the signal from their house? Thanks in advance :) more

Resolved Question: I just moved and can't find any internet but satellite, please help!?

I just moved to Chattaroy, Washington (zip 99003) and need something other than satellite for my MagicJack and my husband's wii. I can't find any cable providers and don't know much about internet. We need a high speed connection to get any online games working for my husband, and while our satellite is "high speed", it's not good enough for what we want to do. Is there any other way to get high speed in my area? I know there are several connection types and such, but don't know what all is needed. The problem is that we pretty much live in the middle of nowhere. Please help us! First person to give us a provider out here will be given best answer. I've already tried Comcast and Time Warner, and it's not out here. Also, these providers (not like we can find them here anyway) don't work well with the wii, so anything else not satellite would be great! Thanks! Providers that wii doesn't support: Alltel EVDO AOL (America Online) All types AT&T Dial-up, AT&T 3G BroadbandConnect Clearwire Pre WiMax Commspeed MMDS Earthlink Dial-up, Satellite Future Technologies Wireless Hughes (HughesNet) Satellite Netcaster Satellite Northboone Wireless Seanet Dial-up Sprint/EMBARQ EVDO SpyTec Satellite Wireless Beehive Wireless T-Mobile Cellular Utah Broadband/MetroBridge Networks Wireless Verizon Cellular Vianet All types WildBlue Satellite Xplornet Wireless more

Resolved Question: How can I find out if Wireless Broadband Internet is available in my area? And whats the fastest?

Resolved Question: Is my network setup keeping me from doing certain things on Xbox Live?

I've been having a little bit of a problem lately with my internet connection. It really just started to get bad with it and I can't stand it anymore. The other night I was playing Gears of War 2 multiplayer all night long with my cousin and there were no matchmaking problems at all. But all of a sudden last night I put in Gears of War 2 and played 1 quick game with no problems and all of a sudden after that I haven't been able to find a matchmaking game. Sometimes if I let it sit there for about 15 to 20 minutes it will sometimes find a match. And also sometimes I can't connect to my friends parties and connect to invited games from them. My setup consist of this as best as I know since it is a wireless broadband internet that is actually very fast and never slow. The signal comes from satellite device that is connected outside on roof. It goes from that to a white Tranzeo brand device that I looked up on the internet and found out it is a surge protection board and from that to my Linksys Cisco 5 port 10/100 switch. Linked to that is my mom and dads computer in another room, my laptop, xbox 360, and also my cousins xbox 360. Also my xbox live test connection always tells me that there is a NAT problem but how can there be a NAT problem if I don't even have a router. The company that installed this internet didn't setup a router for some reason. I guess this internet didn't need one or something. TOTALLY confused on this since I really know nothing on wireless internet setups. I wasn't here when the person installed it as I was away in basic training for Army at the time and my mom and dad just basically don't understand nothing bout computer and network setups. And the funny thing is is I was learning networking in the Army till I got out. Shows I didn't learn much by me posting this huh? LOL! Please someone that knows anything about this stuff help me out. Been stuck on this problem for at least 6 months now. And by the way I've been searching for players in Gears of War 2 for the whole time I've posted this. Hopefully it's just Gears! more

Resolved Question: Broadband Internet Anywhere?

I recently moved to an area with no cable. I am looking for a product that will give me fast speeds for gaming (specifically my PS3). Does such a product exist? I keep hearing about a Verizon Broadband card, but I don't know if it's fast enough or can be used with the PS3. I'm also pretty certain it has a upload/download cap. Is there anything else? Satellite sucks the big one. :/I already have satellite - HughesNet It is the worst service in the world. It is extremely slow even without the latency (which kills gaming) and they lock you out after you reach a ridiculously low cap. more

Resolved Question: How well does Verizon Wireless broadband work?

I live in the country and my only options for internet are Verizon wireless broadband or Hughes net satellite internet. I'm leaning toward Verizon right now. I get decent Verizon cell phone reception (2 bars inside) and I'm usually a pretty light user, no gaming or music downloading but I do stream video. I was wondering if anyone could give me comments on either of these options. more

Resolved Question: How do I Speed up Wireless broadband/Satellite internet?

I have Wireless/Satellite Cellcom broadband internet. In other words it is not through a cable run through the ground it is all from wireless signal to Cellcom. Recently my friend got the same internet as me. We both think it is slow and sucks. But then his uncle gave him a antenna and now he gets 3-4 bars on x box live. Does anybody know where i can get an antenna to speed up my connection and/or how to speed up my internet in any other way? I am really getting frustrated playing with a 1 bar connection on my x box live. Thank you if you give me a answer i really need this sped up. more

Resolved Question: Very Slow Startup and Script Errors?

A few comments about the "new" Yahoo... 1. While the GUI looks OK, it takes about 20 times longer to start. 2. What's with all the freaking flash advertisements! Get them off! They take up too much bandwidth and time. 3. Put in a delay between the time the cursor hits a category on the left side of the panel and the time the category opens to the right. 4. Do some serious debugging of your application! I shouldn't be getting script errors every time I log onto Yahoo. You shouldn't have launched the "new" product without sufficient debugging. By the way, I'm using a Toshiba Satellite computer with a broadband high-speed connection, so it's NOT my computer. It's your app. more
