Open Question: Which wireless router is the best for me?

I have one older laptop that I use a wireless card in (D-Link) and one new laptop that has the card built in. I currently have a D-Link but it is not allowing for a secured connection so I need to replace it. I was told by tech support (Emachines) to get a Linksys but I really don't know anything about wireless routers. I have been reading up on it and there seem to be so many types. I think I want to go with N where my current one is a G. Will the N allow me to still surf the web with the older laptop? What does a Gigabit router do and do I need it? I am on DSL (via phone line) and don't know what the difference is between DSL and broadband, do I need a broadband wireless router? I have also read something about update the firmware, where do I go to do that, and is it free, or do I even need to do that? What is the difference in wireless computing and a wireless network? Which is the easiest for us for home use only? I am simply trying to run 2 laptops on this wireless system. We just got a Wii and I would like to hook that up to wireless also but don't yet know how. Our printer is wired so those would be the only items I know of that I would use wireless with. Which is the best and cheapest wireless router for me? Please explain your answers as I am a novice with this stuff. THANK YOU SO MUCH. more

Open Question: Cant connect to my Wireless Internet for XBox Live! I Have and Idea but Need Help! 2 Part Question!?

Part 1 Alrighty well my problem right now is that i cant connect to my wireless internet using my XBox Wireless Internet Adapter. So what i do is bring my laptop to my XBox and Connect my 360 and my Laptop using a Enthernet Cable and that works BUT its rather laggy and its annoying. Now i dont see why i cant find or connect to my wireless internet using the Wireless Adapter. Right now this is how my internet is set up Modem + Linkys Router----> Dads Computer ----> My Labtop ----> XBox 360 Does anyone know why i it wont pop up when searching for my wireless connection? A while back i was able to connect but when i try to test the connection i cant even get past the first part. Part 2 Now i was wondering if i can simply buy a Linksys WRT160N Wireless-N Broadband Router RangePlus Which is this: http://cgi.ebay.com/Linksys-WRT160N-Wireless-N-Broadband-Router-RangePlus_W0QQitemZ280410945750QQcategoryZ91357QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp4340.m8QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DMW%26its%3DC%26itu%3DUCC%26otn%3D5%26ps%3D63 Now can i simply buy that and hook it up so thats its a seperate connection for me to use for my laptop? Or do i need to have a modem and everything? If that works then can i buy that; set my own internet connection up for my labtop and try and connect to it by my 360? Would that work? I need help for both parts. Be really helpful. Thanks! more

Voting Question: how do I ADD my laptop to my office network so that I can work from home ***NOT remote desktop***?

I will install my office software on my laptop. I don't like "remote desktop" because it reserves an entire workstation in the office and because it is lagged. Resolved Question: Upgrading...which to do?

Ok our home network right now consists of the base computer, running Windows 7, two laptops with built in wifi, and a desktop that is located outside in a garage area (running Windows XP). The two laptops run Vista. Right now we have a Linksys Wireless G Router connected to cable broadband, that is fed into the base computer with a wire. The two laptops can pick up the wifi no problem. The issue is the desktop in the office (about 20 linear feet, but the signal would go through a few outside walls.) The outside desktop is right now using a Compact Wireless G Adapter from Linksys. But the signal out there is way too weak. Would it make sense to upgrade the router to Wireless N? And if we do that, would the laptops and desktop adapter be able to even pick up the signal? What is the best solution to improve the signal in the office? Hopefully you can come up with the cheapest route? more

Resolved Question: INTERNET SPEED and OUTER issue..Would like your help...?

My sons were here and this is what happened: On Thursday, one of my two sons came over and brought his new Notebook computer and X-Box. He used BOTH his computer and X-Box LIVE while I had MY home PC running (Win-XP/Verizon-DSL-NOT FIOS)....NO big problem with any speed or lag. When my older son came yesterday, as SOON as he turned his laptop on, he could NOT get an Internet connection. After moving it, he DID get a connection, but it would take about 5 minutes for a page to load...SAME as with MY PC and the X-BOX-LIVE was lagging & the lights on BOTH the DSL modem and Linsky router were flashing RAPIDLY... AS SOON as they left, steady lights and normal Internet speed returned to my PC. This is the first time my older son brough his NEW HP-Laptop here. Unfortunately he had to leave early because he has a project due to school Monday. ANYONE have ANY idea what caused this AND what I can do to PREVENT this in the future? A better ROUTER?? Was too much bandwidth used? The router is LINSKY/CISCO WIRELESS-G-BROADBAND. Thanks in advance....ALSO, I'm ONLY posting this ONCE. At times, Yahoo Answers cuts off part of my questions and posts BOTH. Any idea what the deal with THAT is??!!SHOULD SAY ***ROUTER*** ISSUE!I ran a speed test--says my download speed is 739 kbps and my upload is 137. more

Resolved Question: How does a wireless router work? We pay for Virgin Internet so what has the router got to do with this?

Do we have to buy a different Internet connection? Or would me buying a wireless router mean that the money we pay for our ISP, Virgin Net, allows us to have wireless internet? I'm really confused, please explain. It's just that we got a new laptop today and the modem I use for the old one didn't even install to the new laptop. Voting Question: How can I easily watch downloaded movies/iPlayer/Youtube etc on my lounge TV?

At the moment, I download movies/tv programmes etc. onto my laptop, then transfer them to a USB pen, which I then put into a USB slot on my DVD player to watch on my main TV. I'd like an easier way to do this. My idea is to have a device or computer with remote control stored under my TV permanently, and connected via either a scart lead or HDMI cable. I could then go straight onto the iPlayer site and watch what I liked, or play my downloaded video/music files. I already have wireless broadband throughout the house. I found a product called Xstreamer for £99, but it says they are removing YouTube support in the next firmware upgrade. I do not want my product to do this. I want full access to all the media sites that I currently visit on my laptop. What is the best solution? Many thanks.Edit to Add: I don't want to connect my regular PC to my TV as I use that PC for work. I don't mind building a new PC just for the lounge, but I was hoping for something smaller as it will have to sit on view permanently. What would I need to buy to be able to access iPlayer and other streaming video sites, as well as play my downloaded files, on my TV? thanks more

Resolved Question: My dial up connection keeps disconnecting, please help?

I recently got a new laptop and connected it to dial up, now every 5 minutes or sometimes shorter, it always disconnects. There is nothing wrong with dial up, as my sister uses it on her laptop and it never disconnects by itself. It's not my dial up settings, I have already checked to make sure there is auto disconnect on or anything other disconnect option. It's not the weather because like i said, its working perfectly fine on my sisters laptop. It's not the cable that i have plugged into my laptop for the dial up connection because i use the same cable as my sister. My dial up connection has been added to my firewall allow settings, so I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with my firewall. The IT guy that reformatted my laptop said something about how he set up the laptop for broadband and LAN connections. I'm pretty sure it might have something to do with this. Sometimes when i touch my dial up cable or move it even slightly is disconnects but this happens with a different cable also. Also, i do have a wireless broadband connection installed to my computer, but I have set my dial up connection to the default connection, so I don't think it would have much to do with it. If you have any suggestions, i would greatly appreciate your help as its really starting to piss me off. more

Resolved Question: How come my desktop internet, which is connected to the router so slow, as opposed to my laptop?

Hello, I hope I am writting this in the right forum. Before stating the problem here is what are my household products. I have a normal high speed internet access. I have a Linksys broadband router (2.4 Ghz/Wireless-G). My desktop is a dell Dimension 5150 and is directly attached to the router via ethernet cable. When surfing the internet on my desktop. The internet is super super slow. The google page pops up relatively fast then when surfing bleepingcomputer website it is very slow to open. Now the internet connection says "connected" speed: 100.0Mbps. When I use my laptop, the internet works just fine. I am using my laptop to surf through this website and write this to you guys. I use Avast antivirus on the desktop whgich i ran scans to see if maybe i am infected with a virus but nothing came up, I also ran Malwarebites anti-malware, and same clean sheet came up. ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE GLADLY CONSIDER. more

Voting Question: need serious computer help...Please?

ok so i got a wireless router for xmas ( 3g mobile broadband travel router) I have 2 laptops and 1 desktop. I hooked it up to the desktop because the desktop does not have a built in wirelss card. it works great! So i hooked it up to the next computer which is a laptop and runs windows vista. Works perfect! So I go through the same exact steps on my laptop which runs windows xp, nothing! I tried everything, nothing. It does pull up my home page of yahoo but does not let me navigate away from it. I called tech support for the router and they told me it doesnt work because I dont have a wireless adapter on my laptop BUT it says wireless right on it with a little button to turn it on and off, I have been to McDonalds, Star bucks several times and connected to there wifi. So I know my laptop has a wireless card/connection. Please help me what do I do??Sniper68* I should have been more clear. I do know they are 2 different wireless connections. I have Verizon broadband usb and that is plugged into the router. I only mention the wifi beacause the tech support told me that I do not have the option on my laptop for a wireless connection which i know is not true because not only does it say wireless and have an on and off button for it but i have used wifi at hotspot locations with it before therfor the wireless connection has worked. But at home I have the verizon aircard ( broadband usb). Which works fine through the router to my other laptop. more

Resolved Question: IP conflict problem with my computer?

Today my father and I went to buy a new Belkin wireless router. We set it all up, and it seems to be fine (all the lights are green), but our computer cant connect. It is a HP laptop, running Vista and is only a few months old. I am currently using my dads laptop (he usually keeps it at work, but brought it home for the holidays) and it is connected fine. if it means anything, his computer is an Acer running windows XP, about 3 years old. Whenever i try to connect on my Vista laptop, a message pops up saying there is an IP conflict with another computer on this network. I don't understand, seeing as there are only 2 computers on the network, one of them running fine. But, if I plug the broadband cable into the Vista laptop, it still connects me to the internet. If this helps: When we first got this internet, we used the Broadband connection. we had a few errors concerning the IP address we contacted our provider, and he gave us an IP to set. I have now changed the settings to automatically obtain IP address. Please help! more

Resolved Question: Connecting an iPod Touch to the internet?

Okay I want to be to connect my iPod Touch to the internet however I don't have a wireless router. So I was thinking is it possible to go through my laptop or something (I'm not very good with this stuff.) Basically I want to connect my iPod wirelessly to my laptop which will then use the cable plugged into our broadband. Is this possible because I want to use the iPod online in my bedroom because the broadband cable doesn't reach that fall so I can't use my laptop in there. If it is possible I would love either step by step instructions. It'll get you best answer if it works =D Also to connect I don't have to register my ipod or anything to beable to connect do I? I have only just got it and so have not registered it. more

Resolved Question: Will I be able to change my modem to a wireless connection or will I need to pay someone?

I am currently using a 'wired' modem connection. Virgin (NTL) is my broadband provider. I am looking to go wireless so that I can use my laptop and my desktop at the same time. I bought a wireless router. Will I be able to set it up myself? Is it hard? Or will I need to call up Virgin to make them come and do it for me, and then pay them? more
