Resolved Question: What am I doing wrong to use my blackberry as a tethered laptop modem?!?

Ok, so I've read all the tutorials, I've properly configured my verizon bb curve 8330 to act as a laptop modem, and it works, the catch is though that every single page I load redirects me to a vzw page trying to solicit their mobile broadband connect service... I'm confused because I did the same thing for my girlfriends bb and laptop a while back and hers works like a dream... No way am I paying any extra to verizon for them to cap my usage at 5gb...I can burn that up in an hour... So is there any secret work around that anyone has personally tried with any success...? My searches on the subject are making the outlook bleak. Here is some possibly pertinent info; Verizon bb curve 8330 w/ updated-latest OS! Newest desktop manager installed, running 32bit vista home.. Any advice from someone who knows (just save your time on the educated guesses) would be really awesome...doesn't look like ill have much luck with it, but hell...naybe someone has figured it out. Thanks so much in advance! more

Resolved Question: How can I end the misery that BT is causing me?

I made a contract online in Dec 2009 with BT for a new phone line and broadband (package) that was supposed to be installed on 13th of January 2010. On the 13th of January I've called them asking why nobody's coming to install my line and they postponed the activation for the 28th and also programmed and engineer to come on that day. An engineer indeed came on the 28th but just to tell me that there is no way to install my line cause their pole is situated in the back of the house and the cable would have to run through other people's flats. Besides that on that same day I received a text telling me that my sevice was activated... few day later I even got a bill for the first month of imaginary internet and land line in my life. It seems that there is zero communication between their departments, engineers, etc. So I called asking them to cancel my contract without further charges due to the fact that installing a new line in my flat is impossible as their engineer stated and to cancel the bill I received. The clerk I spoke to said that my contract will be canceled till the end of the day (4th of Feb) and I will receive a zero bill and instructions on how to send them back their home hub. Instead, I got a bill of 262.54 £ for canceling the contract before end time... meaning that I have to pay 262.54 £ for wasting my credit calling their landlines customer service numbers from a mobile for nothing! Any suggestions? more

Voting Question: What are the cons to AT&T's Mobile Broadband?

I'm planning to order a netbook very soon. One of the options from the company I'm ordering from is to pre-install AT&T cellular mobile broadband. I was wondering if I should get it installed or not. I'd only be using it for the netbook, not for phone service. I'm planning to open a YouTube account for my band and it is imperative that I have internet coverage that supports good and heavy media streaming. Is this an issue with AT&T? Are there any other issues (other than cost) that I should be aware about? Please help. more

Resolved Question: Cloud computing: Is it the next big thing?

In the world of cloud computing our data — emails, documents, pictures, songs — would be stored remotely in a digital cloud hanging above us, always there for us to access from any device we like: computer, television, games console, handheld and mobile, embedded in our kitchen table, bathroom mirror or car dashboard. We should be able to access our data from anywhere, thanks to always on broadband and draw down as much or as little as and when we need. Instead of installing software on our computer we would pay for it only when we needed it. The most familiar early version of a cloud based service is web mail — Googlemail and hotmail — in which email messages are stored on remote servers which can be accessed from anywhere. Google also provides ways for people to store and then share documents and spreadsheets, so many people can access the same document. Facebook and Twitter are like vast clouds of personal information held in a cloud. Wikipedia is a cloud of self-managed, user generated information. Open source software platforms like Drupal are software clouds which coders can draw down from and add to. http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/leadbeater10/leadbeater10_index.html more

Resolved Question: carphonewarehouse cheated me after giving me a contract, they cancelled the order?

Well I went into a carphonewarehouse store in Birmingham, I liked this Sony Laptop they had in store on offer with mobile broadband. I decided to sign up for it. Because I was already a carphonewarehouse customer they already had most of my details on the system and they signed me up for it after checking a few of my things like bank card and id. I was approved for the O2 mobile broadband. They gave me my O2 broadband contract and my dongle in store and said my laptop would be in store on friday and that I need to just pick it up then. I went home thinking i will get my laptop in 3 days. I waited and waited for them to phone me on friday and they didnt so i went to the store they said its not arrived yet even though they had just had a delivery on friday. On my invoice / documents etc... it said laptop will be delivered to store on thursday. Now something was fishy... so I decided to call O2. they said I need to phone carephonewarehouse. I called carphonewarehouse.. they said the laptop has been delivered to the store. I phoned again.. this time they said they dont know whats happening and they will phone the store.. they promised to call me back soon. waited and waited then got a message in my voice mail saying that the store had made a mistake and they have had to fill in a discrepency... I phoned them again and they said the order had been cancelled for some reason and that they will put me through to sales to re place another order. I said what about my contract and the broadband etc that you already signed me up for with o2. they said I should go to store and call customer service or sales from there. I went to the store and they phoned sales up and checked the notes on their system, they found out that the order had been cancelled by one of their staff and there was a note on the system by O2 saying I cannot go into 2 contracts with o2 in the same month, and that this is fraud. Why has this happened? what are my rights here? I was given a contract for 24 months with O2, My open order was closed / cancelled by carphonewarehouse and because im guessing they made a mistake so they tried to re sign me up for a contract and re open the order quietly hoping it will go back on the system but they ended up making O2 think im trying to do fraud by signing up for multiple contracts in 1 month. What am I supposed to do I have been told by the store that I have to go to the store tomorrow and see the store manager and they will sort it out. I have been told to take my dongle and contract etc with me. What can I do? Should I just give them my contract? What can I do about O2 accusing me of fraud? I want an appology from O2 aswell as carphonewarehouse. I signed up for a contract with them I trust them with all my details they cheat me, cancel my order, charge me £50 for the laptop, give me a dongle and a contract and then I am being accused of fraud when some idiot cancelled my order working in that store...or signed me up more than once. I am thinking I should make copies of all documents incase they try to cheat me after taking the contract of me using an excuse to sign me up again and may be decline me this time... If they decline me this time I seriously want to proceed legally against them because if I have to stick to my contract for 24 months then they should stick to their contract for 24 months. If they wanted to do this why did they approve me in ther first place? If they try anything funny I seriously hope they will be paying me £40 for 24 months and end up giving me a sony vaio and 5 dongles free...for life. What are my rights in this situation? will they cheat me tomorrw? will they sign me up again? will they decline me? can they decline me after giving me a contract? should I just hand it over to them? more

Resolved Question: Looking To Get an Alienware Laptop. M11x or M17x? More details below?

Ok, so I was wondering which one should I get. First off I need the laptop to - Work (Word, Powerpoint....) - Some transportation (m11x obviously wins here, but transporting the m17x isn't a big deal really) - Gaming ( I want to be able to play COD : MW2, Crysis and games like that with either maxed out settings or at least high quality graphics ) - Video Editing Now for pricing - If i get the m17x it is very unlikely I will upgrade any parts, most likely just get the base system - If I get the m11x I will definetly upgrade it, I'll post the setup below (also should I get 8gb of memory or just 4gb?) m11x Setup SYSTEM COLORAlienware M11x, Cosmic Black PROCESSORIntel® Core™2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz (3MB Cache) OPERATING SYSTEMGenuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English WARRANTY AND SERVICE1 Year Basic Plan MEMORY4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 800MHz HARD DRIVE320GB SATAII 7,200RPM BLUETOOTHBluetooth Module, 2.1+ Enhanced Data Rate MOBILE BROADBANDNo Internal WWAN Antenna Installed If i got the m17x I would just get whatever comes with it. Voting Question: does anyone else feel technology has made life worse and more frustrating?

I am starting to hate technology in sooo many ways. 1)Thing were so much more efficent without mobile phones, people were always on time and if they were not it was considered a personnel insult, now people can be constantly be late and because they have the tech they think what the hell what difference does it make if that person has to wait an extra 10 20 30 mins! for me! (and it was cheaper as you didn't have to pay monthly fees) 2) generally service is crap now in every way, whenever I have a problem I have to spend 30 minutes talking to a machine when all I want is to speak to a human and sort the problem out in two minutes. 3) too many pieace of technology are faulty and require to great a service and do not work as advertised or implied e.g. 20mb broadband is in reality 2mb because you dont live in the centre of the city next to the Business Headquaters. 4) now they are talking about turning off the Tv analoge system and having digital signals only, which are even worse, in some part of the county when there is bad weather you can lose the signal for hours through digital, god forbid there is a national emergency. technology is only there for profitering in my opinion as it never makes life simpler only more complicated when it goes wrong..... which is regularly when you add all of you technology together. anyone else find this or am i just being silly? more

Voting Question: Getting 3g, EVDO or whatever on a netbook? Internet everywhere how costly?

I am planning on getting a nice net book which still costs under $500. I have wifi in my house, but other than that wifi is hard to find. Sure they have wifi at some hotels and at starbucks, but really I would like to use this netbook on the go, in the car, on vacation and when I'm with family. Obviously I can't get wifi anywhere... They have two services, which I don't really understand or know the difference between, called EVDO and 3g I'm aware of. Also, I heard you can get internet from your phone? I might get a smartphone from verizon with just the basic $30 data plan if that means I can somehow use it as a modem or router for my netbook giving me internet. I I get a netbook with a SIM card slot, can I just get a $30 unlimited data plan and have internet? I guess it costs $60 a month from AT&T and the same for verizon for mobile broadband or EVDO I think. I really don't understand any of this, but what's the cheapest way to get internet on the go on a netbook with EVDO and HSDPA supported? more

I am with the '3' mobile broadband network for the 2nd time, & am on a reduced price plan due to poor reception in quite a few areas where Ive tried to use the service. Now that the contract ends in a few days I'm looking to choose another provider. However I was recently offered the NEW Mifi dongle from '3' who claim the reception is a lot better with this device, but on researching it, it only works as good as a dongle ONLY if you have a signal in your area ! Any ideas on who has the most coverage & most reliable network when it comes to mobile broadband using a dongle ?Also '3' still claim that their dongles are capable of download speeds of 7.2mbs ! I find this very hard to believe, especially for a usb dongle. more

Voting Question: high speed internet help? and suggestions....?

Okay.. So I've had dial up at my house for years because I don't have a lot of high speed internet providers. In riverside, Ca. I can't get DSL from at&t or verizon fios. They're not in my area. The only thing I can get is charter cable but they're cust. Service sucks. And I'd had problems with them before. Is there anyone else that can give me reliable high speed? I'm looking into mobile broadband but it has usage caps... And satellite kinda seems pricey and unreliable... Anyone have any suggestions? Any ideas? And companies they recommend? more

Resolved Question: Which one is better T-Mobile or Cricket Mobile Broadband?

I'm looking for the best, problem free mobile broadband service, both services are $40.00 per month, but which one is better, I need it to be activated fast without problems. I think that the only difference between those 2 is that cricket is not a contract, anyway. Which one do you recommend? Also, what are the requirements for the activation? I don't have a phone number yet. I just need internet. more

Resolved Question: My friend is on my mobile plan, and the bill was due 1/17. Should I suspend the service or contact the person?

My friend and I haven't spoken to each other in nearly two weeks, after a petty disagreement. I attempted to reach out to the person several times with no luck. Minus the personal issue going on, we still have financial business that needs to be resolved. I emailed my friend a bill reminder a week before the mobile broadband bill was due and received no response back. The bill is due the same time every month, so it's not like the person isn't aware. Should I give my friend a grace period of additional day or two to pay the bill or call Verizon and temporarily suspend the service? I'm trying to be patient with my friend, but I'm going to allow my credit to suffer either. more

Resolved Question: Why do some mobile broadband services prevent services like messenger, skype and file sharing?

I heard it's something to do with fair use policy or something. But can anyone please tell me why these policies dnt allow things like file sharing etc? Thanks. TomTo JIM It is of course illegal to download and share files which have been copyrighted or protected by other means without paying the proper fees. Otherwise, File sharing is completely legal. File sharing is legally used by many people all over the world. I regularly watch catch up tv programmes on 'bbc i player', which is free to use. This is only one example of file sharing. more

Resolved Question: Read This - Do you think this is a good or bad idea for the auto industry?

We saw it with cell phones and then televisions in the driver's view, accidents were what rose right along with entertainment value. Do you predict internet surfing will produce a similar effect? Do you think this is a good or bad idea for the auto industry? --quote--- Ford brings Wi-Fi to the highway Ford is making its cars into mobile Wi-Fi hot spots. The next generation of the Sync in-car entertainment and information system will use a USB mobile broadband modem to establish a secure wireless connection capable of supporting several devices simultaneously. The system will be available next year on selected models -- no word yet which ones -- and you won't need a subscription or hardware beyond the modem. "While you're driving to grandma's house, your spouse can be finishing the holiday shopping and the kids can be chatting with friends and updating their Facebook profiles," said Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas. "And you're not paying for yet another mobile subscription or piece of hardware because Ford will let you use technology you already have." Several automakers already offer in-car Internet access -- Japanese drivers have been using it since 1997 -- and many others are rushing to bring it to us. Ford's announcement follows General Motors' promise last week to make in-car connectivity available in seven models of trucks and SUVs. They're the latest automakers to bring the infobahn to the autobahn. Mercedes recently announced it has successfully tested in-vehicle Internet applications -- including web browsing, vehicle software updates and VOIP -- on a prototype 4G network. It follows BMW's Internet-connected iDrive system and Chrysler's Uconnect Web in-vehicle mobile hotspot. With so many automakers getting in on the action, there's a push to introduce hardware standards. Ford is taking a decidedly different approach, opting to allow consumers to plug in their own USB modem to get connected. General Motors, on the other hand, offers a dealer-installed system called Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile. It creates a Wi-Fi hot spot 300 feet in diameter around the vehicle, and GM claims the 3G network achieves speeds of up to 1.5 mbps. The hardware costs $199 after the $200 mail-in rebate, and the service costs $29 a month. Given how connected we are, it makes sense for automakers to put the Internet in our cars. The number of iPhones and other mobile devices being used to connect to the Internet jumped 75 percent in the third quarter of this year, according to JiWire Mobile Audiences Insights Report. Letting people log on from the road will be a big selling point among 20-something buyers, the so-called Millennials who have propelled much of Sync's success. Millennials will make up 28 percent of the driving population next year, a nine-point increase from 2004. Kids aside, Ford says interest in in-car connectivity is high among the general public, with one-third of people surveyed by the Consumer Electronics Association expressing interest in being able to check e-mail or surf the Web from the car --quote-- source.. http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/12/26/wired.ford.wi.fi/index.html more

Voting Question: What's the deal with mobile broadband?

From looking at the comparisons between mobile broadband services: http://mobile-broadband-services-review.toptenreviews.com/ ..it doesn't seem mobile broadband technology is going anywhere. Every service is 60 dollars per month with a 5GB monthly cap. You would think that competition between them would cause them to offer better plans. I'm also confused about the speeds. Mobile broadband technologies like HSDPA are capable of going at speeds up to 14 Mbit/s. Yet, none of the mobile broadband services offered seem to go nearly this fast, according to this comparison by PC World: http://www.pcworld.com/zoom?id=167391&page=1&zoomIdx=1 Why is this? more

Voting Question: On the 10th of this month I purchased the Cricket Broadband service, its not bad but its not good enough?

I like to watch movies on youtube and Megavideo. and cricket is too slow. I love the idea of it being mobile though. So here's my question I have 3 days to return the modem, does it matter how much time I've used or what I downloaded. for the price I know I can get ATT for the same price and a way faster speed. The lady said I can bring it back but I heard if used over 3 hours it cant be returned. So wanted to confirm that before I waste time going way out there to the main store. Thanks for any answers or advice. more

Voting Question: Is it possible to share an iPhone's wireless internet service with a desktop PC?

I know this is a strange question but there is some logic behind it. A guy I work with can't get high speed internet at his home (DSL or Cable). He could get HughesNet but it's VERY expensive. He has dial-up but it's horrible. He is very interested in getting an iPhone 3GS. The data plan on an iPhone is unlimited for $30/month compared to $50+/month for a regular mobile broadband adapter for a laptop or desktop that has very restrictive data limits. So here's my question: if he bought an iPhone with the unlimited data plan, is it possible to share the iPhone's internet service with his PC? This way, he'd have the best of both worlds with only one bill. I'm not sure if it could be done thru the USB charging cable or maybe it would have to be thru Bluetooth or WiFi. If anyone knows if this is possible, please let me know. Thanx!I found a YouTube video on the subject. It's called "Tethering" your iPhone but it might be risky. Here's a link-it may or may not be clickable... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UP165DNTRxQ more
