Road Runner Broadband Questions asked

Open Question: Doh! I setup a new Netgear WiFi router. Days later I discover I've been accessing my neighbor's! Is that legal?

Apparently, mine is the 2nd "Netgear" in the list (I clicked the wrong one during setup)... Anyway, LOL, I guess I'll return my router now and cancel my Road Runner (I mean my neighbor's broadband is faster)... (Kidding!... but is that legal?) more

Resolved Question: Help Me Choose The Best Router, I have 2 in Mind?

Hello, before i show you the two inexpensive routers i found, both with great reviews, i wanted to ask you brainers a few questions, What is the diffrence between a wireless -g and wireless -n, i know there is some range diffrence between them, however that's all i know. anyway, i want to hook up my road runner cable modem, to a wireless router that will transmit the signal, roughly about 30 feet away, to my playstation 3, which has built in wifi, i could relocate my cable modem, but that would be too much. so here are the two links, please take a look, and with your wireless experience, and my information, help me out, lol thank you. http://www.amazon.com/ZyXEL-NBG419N-802-11n-Wireless-Router/dp/B002HJ25SM/ref=sr_1_22?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264742005&sr=8-22 http://www.amazon.com/TRENDnet-54Mbps-Wireless-Broadband-TEW-432BRP/dp/B000BI1XNE/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1264741961&sr=8-8 also i have a 7mbp connection, and i have witnessed download speeds up too 2000kbps, so take this into consideration, as i would like to enjoy my online gaming as smooth as possible. thanks again, -vic more

Resolved Question: How is Road Runner Turbo Speed Like?

Resolved Question: Can I split a cable connection to get internet & cable?

We were getting free basic cable in our NY apt. Then I signed up for Road Runner Broadband. The tech couldn't get in the backyard where the cable line originates, so he used the cable from my TV to set up the internet connection. Now, if I want to watch TV, I have to unplug the cable from the router so I can't use the internet while the TV is on. Can I split this signal? The tech told me it would cause interference and the signal wasn't strong enough... Thoughts? more

Voting Question: broadband speed question?

How fast does cable broadband go? (i.e. time warner - road runner). I'm getting some incredible speeds recently like 20-25 million bps.I'm getting these crazy high numbers with www.speakeasy.net (it doesn't matter with which browser) and with http://speedtest.twcnc.com/. Resolved Question: What could be causing me to lose Internet connectivity?

Suddenly yesterday, I started having a problem on my home desktop computer. After boot-up, I lose Internet connectivity after a few minutes. If I re-boot, I can connect again, but only for a few minutes. I rand a virus scan (nothing found), AdAware and SpyBot found only 3 low-impact items which I deleted. I also ran a disk defrag and rebooted the modem, but none of these procedures helped the problem. I have Road Runner broadband cable ISP (not wireless) and I am NOT networked. I did have a power surge on Sunday during a windstorm. Is it most likely my computer, my modem or a problem with my ISP. How can I check my cable connections with Windows XP home? Any other things I should check? Any easy fixes? (assume I have little knowledge of troubleshooting or technical jargon) more

Resolved Question: Why do I download at 90Kbps MAX but others are downloading over 40MBps MINIMUM?

I don't understand what the difference is between people are downloading things that fast. It takes me hours to download something that is 200MBs or something while it will only take a few minutes for others. I will try to provide you with all the info that I know. I have a WebSTAR Model DPC2100 and EPC2100 Cable Modem with Cable Broadband from Road Runner with Time Warner Cable. I also have a Linksys Wireless Router I use for wifi for my NDS, PS3, Xbox 360, and Wii but my download speed hasn't changed with this. I have a cable running from the outlet to the modem and then ethernet to the wireless router and from the router to my PC. I used to have cable to the modem and then USB from the modem to my PC but I have the wireless router now. Thats about all I know but I don't know why my speed is that low. Someone told me I needed more RAM so I converted about 10GBs of memory into RAM but that did absoulutely nothing for my download speed. Does anyone know the reason why I download this slow and what I can do or what I need to buy to increase the speed? I would love to be able to download a 5 GB file in an hour or so.Ok well I have nothing to do with paying for the internet its my dad that does all of that. So the problem is he is paying cheap or is it that we have Time Warner Cable and so does alot of other people? more

Resolved Question: Is my processor wearing out?

I have a 6-year old computer. It has 1Gb memory (the max it will hold) and an Intel Pentium 4, 2.3Ghz processor. I use a high speed broadband Internet connection. I recently upgraded from Windows XP to Windows Vista Home Premium. After the upgrade, the computer is sluggish and takes a long time to bring up my Internet browser (tried both IE7 and Firefox - both same response time). Like 2 minutes or so. When I attempt to stream media, sometimes the video hangs and sometimes it plays a couple of seconds, then buffers a couple of seconds. None of these happened prior to the Vista changeover. I pulled up Task Manager and see that much of the time the processor is operating at 100% capacity. Sometimes when the only running process is the browser and task manager, it will be at 100%. Now the memory used seldom peaks at over 60%. So I am thinking that I need a newer computer with a faster processor. But when shopping around for computers under $600 (my price range), I see that even though some have dual core processors and 64 bit processors, they all clock (in this price range) around 2.6 to 2.7 Ghz; about the same clock speed as mine. 1. If the processor speed of a new computer is about the same as mine, might I have other problems? I have run registry cleaners and I have Kaspersky Internet Security and did a complete scan of the computer twice with no threats found. 2. I don't want to revert back to XP, because to do so would require me to reformat my hard drive and install the old operating system. There is too much on here for me to take the time to do that. Besides, believe it or not, I actually like the features included in Vista. 3. What else could be using the processor resources that isn't shown in Task Manager? I see that the operating system is not show there unless I just don't know what to look for. But the other 20 or so processes always show 0%, or a couple might show 5% or 6% each. The biggest resource users seem to be the browser and whatever I am accessing (streaming audio, streaming video-mostly). Still if you add up the percentages, it usually only comes to like 85% or 90% even though the "total" at the bottom of Task Manager says 100% And if you hit a web page (like my Road Runner home page sometimes) that has a lot of flash animation on it, you can forget it. That really eats up the processor. So would I benefit from a new computer or can I do something to fix this one. I would "like" to have a new one of course, but times are tough and I don't want to spend money if I can rectify this situation. more

Resolved Question: How do I get my older laptop online?

Last week I bought a used (old) laptop. It's a Dell latitude CPi. It has been somewhat upgraded, but here's what it has: pentium II processor, 300mhz, 128MB RAM, 40GB HD running Windows XP home edition. I have never owned a laptop or had to "upgrade" to be able to get online... so basically i'm completely lost as to what i need to do to get this thing connected. It has a usb port and also 2 pc card slots. My desktop is connected thru a high speed broadband connection thru my cable company (road runner) what do i need to purchase and do to get the laptop online? any help much appreciated, as well as links for laptop dummies so i can educate myself a little. LOL Thanks in advance :)*NOTE* by "upgrade to get online" I basically meant I've never had to do anything more than plug in a phone line. (maybe a bad choice of words) These laptops are ancient and apparently do not have a built in modem of any kind. Therefore "plugging in a phone line" isn't an option. and I am completely confused by my options.so basically a usb device / pc card acts as a "phone jack" that would otherwise be on a computer and thatmine doesn't have? what would i need to do to go wireless?I currently am using an external modem for my desktop. (just what they hooked upwhen i switched to broadband) it's a motorola voice over IP cable modem. cable runs to it, usb to my pc tower more

Voting Question: Wireless internet connection problems here, Please help me!?

To whom it may concern, I have a Dell laptop that will be 4 yrs old in December of 2008. It has a FREE Intel Pro/ Wireless 2200 Internal Wireless (802.11 b/g, 54Mbps) for Inspiron 9200 built into it. I recently purchased, and began using, a LINKSYS N/ULTRA Range Plus Wireless-N Broadband Router. The router is set up downstairs in my next- door neighbor’s house, which is approximately 125ft from my laptop which I reside in an upstairs separate home with walls and a driveway between us. My neighbor has a newer Desktop PC (non-wireless) and is hooked up to "Road-Runner”. My problem is: I am getting a weak, and very inconsistent, signal strength. It seems to fluctuate and is unreliable no matter where I am, inside or outside my home. But then there are times it will work just fine for me! Not only that, I have problems daily getting onto the internet period! It often states "this web page cannot be found". I do refresh it ect, and it still does the same thing!!! This happens sometimes even when it is also states I have “excellent” signal strength from the router. I am hoping to find a very knowledgeable person whom will give me an honest opinion/fact and information regarding my situation here. I am also hoping that I won’t have to buy unnecessary adapters, etc if it won’t solve the problem here. But whatever it takes to fix my problem here I shall have to do it I guess! If you could please give me a list of options that would help considerably in the matter that would be so nice of you! PS: What is the difference between signal strength and speed? I am lacking the skills on computer networking and computer language so to speak so if possible could you make the explanation understanding for me please! PS: What is the difference between signal strength and speed? Thanks for your time and help. I hope to here from you soon! Amy B. Any more options for me ? 8/15/08 more

If you X the box out you become disconnected from the internet, but if you go to "tools" on the internet explorer window and deselect "Work offline" (It does this by itself after you click "X" on the pop-up box) this occurs on ALL sites and even disconnects AIM, ETC., it has been doing this for a while, but now it does it all the time, (if you deselect "Work offline" it goes back online), can I stop this? it does this on all browsers, including Firefox, safari, netscape, internet explorer, and opera, WHY IS THIS DOING THIS???? if you need more info to answer the question, please just ask, by the way, I have Windstream DSL (1.5 mbps), and it also does THE SAME thing on road runner (6 mbps), my laptop has gone through a couple IP addresses, but works on all connections, but it just does this. thanx more

Voting Question: Is it worth upgrading my Road Runner broadband service from 5megs to 8 megs?

I live in NC and Time Warner offers high speed online thru "Road Runner" (its like Optimum Online for Cablevision users). I tend to use my pc for chatting and downloading songs. I use my xbox 360 for online games like saints row, nba 2k8... etc but doesnt it matter that the other people i play with have a strong connection as well. laggers on multiplayer online games definitely ruin the experience.and its not a point of "if i go over the speed limit of 5 megs i have to upgrade" they send a very high bandwith to each connection and the modem filters or "squeezes" the bandwith to the speed that you are paying for. if you pay $45 a month for 5 megs.. it will allow 5 megs of speed thru to ur computer.. if u pay the $55 fee you can have that optimized to 8 megs and then they send a update to ur modem and "loosen the squeeze" per say lol more

I have been conserned lately that I am not getting the speed possible to my other PC (server now for laptop). I was told if I upgrade my network card in that PC to a 10/100/1000 I will be able to handle all speeds coming in. But here is my concern. Won't I need a 10/100/1000 wire less router too? I know I will only be able to get so much speed from my wireless laptop. But I do want to be able to get the most out of my PC as well. And what about the cable modem that my ISP (Road Runner Cable) provided is there a better faster one possibly available? And would a 108Mbs wirless router help with the laptop speed. more

Resolved Question: is a switch or a router better ?

i got cable internet (road runner) from time warner with a motorola surfboard V5220 modem. i got only one PC connected to it. Now i need to connect an XBOX 360, so which is better froma network performance standpoint, a broadband router with 4 ports or only a switch ? personally i think the switch would have less latency than the router as it's hardware based, but i thought of checking with you guys here first it's gonna be like this : cable modem -------- router/switch-------- PC & XBOX more
