Tassie lags nation in net take-up

A bare 54 per cent of Tasmanian homes are connected to the internet and just 28.9 per cent of homes have a broadband connection. The state lags the national averages of 63 per cent and 43 per cent respectively. The proportion of broadband users in Tasmania is less than half that in the Australian Capital Territory. The figures reveal half of the state's internet users are stuck with obsolete dial-up connections. The problem is worst in rural Tasmania where, despite an internet uptake rate of 65 per cent, two thirds of users are stuck on dial-up. State Treasurer Michael Aird said the Government was doing its best to help lift the dire figures. "The Tasmanian Government has long recognised Tasmania's high telecommunications costs are a factor in people accessing the internet," Mr Aird said. "The Government has invested about $30 million into broadband infrastructure and is negotiating with potential strategic partners to commercialise this important asset.
