Resolved Question: Read This - Do you think this is a good or bad idea for the auto industry?

We saw it with cell phones and then televisions in the driver's view, accidents were what rose right along with entertainment value. Do you predict internet surfing will produce a similar effect? Do you think this is a good or bad idea for the auto industry? --quote--- Ford brings Wi-Fi to the highway Ford is making its cars into mobile Wi-Fi hot spots. The next generation of the Sync in-car entertainment and information system will use a USB mobile broadband modem to establish a secure wireless connection capable of supporting several devices simultaneously. The system will be available next year on selected models -- no word yet which ones -- and you won't need a subscription or hardware beyond the modem. "While you're driving to grandma's house, your spouse can be finishing the holiday shopping and the kids can be chatting with friends and updating their Facebook profiles," said Mark Fields, Ford president of the Americas. "And you're not paying for yet another mobile subscription or piece of hardware because Ford will let you use technology you already have." Several automakers already offer in-car Internet access -- Japanese drivers have been using it since 1997 -- and many others are rushing to bring it to us. Ford's announcement follows General Motors' promise last week to make in-car connectivity available in seven models of trucks and SUVs. They're the latest automakers to bring the infobahn to the autobahn. Mercedes recently announced it has successfully tested in-vehicle Internet applications -- including web browsing, vehicle software updates and VOIP -- on a prototype 4G network. It follows BMW's Internet-connected iDrive system and Chrysler's Uconnect Web in-vehicle mobile hotspot. With so many automakers getting in on the action, there's a push to introduce hardware standards. Ford is taking a decidedly different approach, opting to allow consumers to plug in their own USB modem to get connected. General Motors, on the other hand, offers a dealer-installed system called Chevrolet Wi-Fi by Autonet Mobile. It creates a Wi-Fi hot spot 300 feet in diameter around the vehicle, and GM claims the 3G network achieves speeds of up to 1.5 mbps. The hardware costs $199 after the $200 mail-in rebate, and the service costs $29 a month. Given how connected we are, it makes sense for automakers to put the Internet in our cars. The number of iPhones and other mobile devices being used to connect to the Internet jumped 75 percent in the third quarter of this year, according to JiWire Mobile Audiences Insights Report. Letting people log on from the road will be a big selling point among 20-something buyers, the so-called Millennials who have propelled much of Sync's success. Millennials will make up 28 percent of the driving population next year, a nine-point increase from 2004. Kids aside, Ford says interest in in-car connectivity is high among the general public, with one-third of people surveyed by the Consumer Electronics Association expressing interest in being able to check e-mail or surf the Web from the car --quote-- source.. http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/12/26/wired.ford.wi.fi/index.html more

What would I need to hook up to three computers, wired, and possibly also a wireless laptop. It would be great if all computers have the capabilities of using the same printer. I would also like to share files and info between the computers if possible. I have : Cable internet and phone package RCA digital broadband residential voip modem box Cable wire comes in from wall, hooks into a three way splitter that goes to the TV and to the RCA modem then the modem hooks to the phone and computer. I have Linksys wireless G but it goes out all the time and setup was difficult. (The Linksys is a 6 year old model. Time for an upgrade) I also have Windows XP on one computer and Windows Vista on the other two. I may be getting a replacement on one of the Vistas and making it a Windows 7. I will be doing gaming on these computers as well. What is the best thing to get that is the most reliable and safe and..... the easiest set up as well if there is such a thing, lol. Resolved Question: VoIP, wireless, broadband...?

Ok - I'm pretty clueless when it comes to all of the above! I'm moving house shortly, and want to rid myself of landline expenses as I hardly ever use it (the only real reason I have one is cause my Mum-in-law calls us from NZ) but I have no clue as to what I'd need to set it up and how much it would all cost. Obviously I want to keep it as low cost as possible, and I've found a provider that gives me the broadband use I want and VoIP, but I've been told I'll need a modem or router that I can plug my phone into (my current one wont) and the one this provider is offering is like $200+ I would also like to set up so the broadband is wireless - I have a laptop only and get sick of being stuck in the one place with it if I want to be online. Can anyone suggest a cheaper alternative the to $200+ option my provider is giving, and also advise how to set up wireless, again for cheap! Thanking you in advance! Ps - I'm in Melbourne Australia, so answers need to be options available to me here! Cheers ;) more

Resolved Question: How do you set up a redirect service from your landline onto your VOIP phone such as Skype?

I have asked a few questions regarding a network between my house and office. I have a traditional analogue phone in my house but have no way of placing it in my office without loads of work. A cat5 cable already exists between my house and office. I use a normal phone with Eircom and want all calls redirected onto a phone linked to my PC all on my broadband and cat5e network. Is this possible and do you think it is an easy thing to do? more

Resolved Question: VoiP internet telephone question?

Hello, I am looking to get rid of my current telephone company and I wanted to try an internet based telephone. There is only 1 problem I am faced with. Our broadband service people stopped the cable about 100 ft short of our house. We use an outdoor antenna that hooks up to our computer via USB and pick up the internet off our neighbors router. We don't have a router or a modem, but we still have broadband. We have checked our internet speed and ic passes the test so it should be ok. I was looking at MagicJack and it says you have to keep your computer on for it to work which I really dont want to leave it on all day. I also looked at the TK6000 and I really like it, but it says you have to hook it up to a router or modem. So any suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated more

Resolved Question: What are the advantages of VOIP over a normal home telephone system?

I haven't got much of an idea what I'm looking at, I need to buy a new phone for the house but I've seen some which are compatible with VOIP but are expensive, is it worth the extra money. Resolved Question: I dunno what PC to get!?!!?

Using PCSpecialist.co.uk I'm building an AMD Gaming RIG. Now The problem is, I want to be able to play Crysis nicely, have the system future proof, be able to play Modern Warfare 2 Maxed out graphics, and other future games on max or as close as. Now The problem is I have £1000. That is enough some might think however I do not wish to spend more than £865 on Computer because I still need to buy the Logitech G11 Keyboard, a decent Laser mouse, a Creative Fatal1ty headset, an that adds up about £85. Leaving me with a small amount to pre-order Modern Warfare and I want to get World of Warcraft as well as Subcribe for 6 months. My Entire system spec is or MAY be: Processor (CPU) AMD PHENOM II X3 720 BLACK EDITION 2.8 GHz SOCKET AM3 6MB CACHE OR AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition 3.2GHz Socket AM3 8MB CACHE Memory (RAM) 4GB CORSAIR XMS3 DDR3 1600MHz - LIFETIME WARRANTY (2x2GB) Motherboard ASUS® CROSSHAIR III FORMULA: DDR3 - Republic of Gamers, CrossfireX Operating System Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium 64-bit + Windows 7 Upgrade Voucher (£86) USB Options 6 x USB 2.0 PORTS (4 REAR + 2 FRONT) AS STANDARD Memory - 1st Hard Disk 500GB SERIAL ATA 3-Gb/s HARD DRIVE WITH 8MB CACHE (7,200rpm) 2nd Hard Disk NONE RAID (HDD 1 & 2) NONE 1st CD/DVD Drive 22x DUAL LAYER DVD WRITER ±R/±RW/RAM 2nd CD/DVD Drive NONE Graphics Card 1GB ATI RADEON™ HD 4870 PCI EXPRESS 2nd Graphics Card NONE Sound Card ONBOARD 8 CHANNEL (7.1) HIGH DEF AUDIO (AS STANDARD) Network Facilities ONBOARD 10/100/1000 GIGABIT LAN PORT Modem NONE, I WILL BE USING BROADBAND Floppy Disk Drive NONE Memory Card Reader INTERNAL 52 IN 1 CARD READER (READS XD, MS, CF, SD, etc) Case ANTEC 1200 BLACK GAMING CASE Power Supply & Case Cooling 800W Quiet Quad Rail PSU + 120mm Case Fan (£89) (Special Offer) Processor Cooling ARCTIC COOLING FREEZER 64 PRO PWM QUIET AMD CPU COOLER (£19) Firewire & Video Editing 2 x IEEE 1394a FIREWIRE PORTS (1 onboard, 1 at back panel) TV Card NONE Monitor NONE 2nd Monitor NONE DVI Cable 1 x 2 Metre DVI Cable (£5) Keyboard & Mouse NONE Mouse NONE Speakers NONE Webcam NONE Headsets (VOIP) NONE Surge Protection NONE Printer NONE Anti-Virus NONE Office Software NONE External Hard Drive NONE Home Installation NONE Warranty 1 Year Return-to-Base incl 1 Year Free Collect & Return (£5) Delivery STANDARD INSURED DELIVERY TO UK MAINLAND (MON-FRI) Build Time Standard Build - Approximately 11 to 13 working days Quantity 1 Now that brings the price to £862 Which is OK. I'll have enough to buy some games. Subscribe to Warcraft and pre-order Modern Warfare 2. Now the thing that worries me is that it isn't Quad, and that Tri-Cores never really lifted off the ground. 2nd of all, the price elevates to £913. That's without the awesome keyboard I want. Then when I do buy the Awesoem keyboard, mouse, and headset then I'm left with about 20p to buy a game. (Won't happen) I don't want to make the wrong choice. People say don't compromise on processors and I don't want to drop price on the case and choose a smaller one with less intake/exhaust fans because my room is very hot alot of the time even with the windows open, and I also like the dust covers. I won't use newegg or anything else because I'm not building it myself. I'm using www.pcspecialist.co.uk I already have a 20" Samsung Syncmaster 2032MW 1680x1050 - 5ms HDTV Monitor/TV, Logitech X-230 2.1 Stereo Speakers, and a Logitech Quickcam 10 - 1.3MP Camera. I need this system to run for a long time. And I don't want to upgrade it for as long as possible either but I picked the mobo and case for just that reason - ability to upgrade if need be. Also regardless of whatever CPU I choose is that CPU cooler going to keep my processor cool in a antec 1200 case in a warm room, an maybe during overclocking? (maybe overclock 400mhz-600mhz MAX) Please help. If you have to use www.PCspecialist.co.uk yourself to mess about with available build options to cut cost, first click build my own > AMD > Crossfire System. I don't want dual-core. Please give me as much info as possible and some recommendations. Please answer as many questions as possible shown in this question. The main thing is the choice between Triple-Core and Quad. Although I need to save money to buy games. :( Confused :( ThanksSo X3 it is? It'd save me a good £60-70. Which allows for some gamage! :) I agree. I've read in a lot of forums its GPU slavery that does the leg-work mostly. I just hope my X3 won't die off in 2 years. I'll keep the Antec 1200, again coz of my hot room, an I think I'll go with the X3 720 Black Edition 2.8Ghz. Are you sure this will suffice for Crysis and Modern Warfare 2 on MAX? Is the CPU cooler enough for my CPU. I do intend on Overclocking the X3 720 to 3.2GHz. Thanks so far everyone, Lord I sense you are being honest, so I'm grateful.I'd probably stick with a X3 720 til the last second. Unless I had to critially update due to every game needing quads. more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to use different network connections for different programs?

I currently have Verizon mobile broadband for use while I'm at work since basically everything on the work network is blocked. I want to use an instant messenger client for VOIP, but since I'm capped at 5gb, I don't want to use that much internet on talking. Is there any way that I can plug my phone into my computer for browsing with Firefox, but at the same time be plugged into my work network for use with the messenger client? more

Resolved Question: Need help with Wireless Router (WRT54G v8)?

Ok, here is the situation. I am not new to setting up a network by any means but i am stumped. Trying to set my neighbor's wireless Linksys up and its not working. They have: a Linksys WRT54G V8 Wireless Router Comcast Broadband Modem/Gateway from Comcast for phones (RCA model something) They also have a standard (not wireless) Linksys Router which they are currently using. For some reason when i switch out the standard router for the wireless there is no connection, even to the hard wired desktop. I am completely taking the standard router out of the loop and replacing it with the WRT54G. Tried calling Linksys but they wont help via phone unless i pay them a one time $29.99 fee. Connection is going: From Wall >> Comcast Gateway >> WRT54G >> Desktop (hardwired) Have tinked around inside the router admin panel (192.168.1.1) to my wits end, and have it set to OBTAIN IP AUTOMATICALLY, and CLONE IP but i get no connection. The only thing i can think is that the gateway/modem from comcast is messing it up, but i have voip phones at work and was walked through the set up by Linksys Tech Support so i know it can be done. Any input on how to do it?To the first response: Im not sure exacly how to change the modems IP address, but i did change the routers im pretty sure. I changed it to 192.168.2.1. I had to type the new address (192.168.2.1) to access the admin panel, and it still didnt work that way. more

Resolved Question: Will this system overheat during many hours of gaming or when overclocked? Is it worth £939?

Is this a powerful enough system for gaming? Is it future proof? Is it worth the money? It worked out cheaper than a DDR2 based AM2+ system! I spent a tad more money picking the Coolermaster HAF 932 Full Tower Black Gaming Case over the Antec 900 because it has more fans, bigger fans, and is larger inside. I can't build PC's myself so I may pay www.pcspecialist.co.uk to build it. It is a CrossfireX system. Will this last me many years? I hope it does. Resolved Question: How to make voip calls on a Symbian 9 S60 V3 Nokia phone using a vpn on a broadband connection?

I have a Symbian 9 S60 V3 Nokia N82 phone and also a vpn connection on a broadband of 1 MBPS. Can you suggest any available mobile software, which I can download/buy to install on the phone and make VOIP calls? more

Resolved Question: How can I make voip calls on VPN without a cracking-voice?

I live in U A E and a few months back, the main ISP has blocked all major VOIP clients from connecting and making VOIP calls is almost impossible on a vanilla internet connection. Therefore, after advice of few users, I switched to making VOIP calls on a VPN tunnel. I first bought a connection from 'VPN Gates' but the voice quality was bad (there was either a very long lag or voice would crack) After wasting time and money, I then switched to a VPN connection from StrongVPN and the result was the same... I am using a broadband/DSL connection of 1MBPS and I have checked that my router doesn't have a problem. I have run ping-tests to my router and to some web sites and there is no packet-loss or anything. While downloading on P2P, I get a great speed and I confirm that I do not make voip calls and P2P at the same time. Therefore, the internet connection is available for full use. All my other web sites work fine and with speed. However, when I make VOIP calls on the VPN connection, although I can hear the other party absolutely clearly, my outgoing voice quality is bad. I am using the products of BetaMax (SmartVoip and BudgetSIP). I have Comodo Firewall installed and have even allowed the default port, which is used by the VOIP client. I have even tried to run VOIP after disabling the Firewall. Does anybody have a good way of how I can make VOIP calls, without getting into any sort of trouble. Even if you suggest an entirely new method or VPN company or VOIP client, I would give it a try. Thanks! Regards MindWell, I want to add here that when VOIP was not blocked by the ISP here, on the same connection, my voice did not crack... the upload speed was thes same at that time too. more

Voting Question: Can you use an ADSL 2+ for ADSL?

I've got a wireless voip router/modem (belkin F1PI242EGau) and I'm currently using a naked line. However the quality's not great and considering switching back to dial tone phone line for internet. The internet deal i am considering comes with a modem but doesn't give wireless. So i was wondering if i could use my old modem/router (originally for voip and adsl 2+) for another type of internet (mostly like adsl broadband). Thanks more

Resolved Question: How can I adapt my Linksys VoIP phone SPA941 to become wireless?

I have a Linksys VoIP phone SPA941. I've recently moved house and and my new home office does not have telephone point. To get one installed will cost a bit of money but I need to have some way to talk to customers via my VoIP phone even though the broadband box is now situated downstairs. I think I have two possible options: 1. Purchase a very long cable that will stretch from my broadband box to the Linksys phone upstairs (will be a bit messy having wires going through my home) 2. Spend $44 or so on a Linksys wireless bridge WBP54G (not sure if I want a wireless device like this in my office - will it effect the quality of the call? Does anybody know of any other solution to make this work and could they provide me with any input as to whether having the wireless adapter would have an effect on the quality of the call? I'm not a techie so would really appreciate answers that are not too techie. Many thanks for reading this. more

Resolved Question: Internet Usage Limit and VOIP calls?

Hi, both my brother and I will be in the US from this fall. Hence, we have a Vonage VOIP phone at home to make calls to us. Until now the Broadband Limit of my BSNL Connection was 2.5 GB/month. But since I am leaving to the US and my parents won't be using a lot of Internet except checking emails, I am planning to change the plan from 2.5GB to 1GB/month. (On this page -http://www.bsnl.co.in/service/dataone_tariff.htm, I plan to shift from Home 500 to Home 250) My Q - Will this 1GB limit be enough for VOIP calling considering that my parents will be on the phone with either me or my brother for a lot of time. Basically, how much of data transfer takes place for a 20 minute call for eg. Is it ok if i shift to the lower plan as I need to cost-cut here. more

Resolved Question: How to configure a Cable/DSL Router (TPLink TLR860) which is connected with ISP line to share 2 client PCs?

Actually I have seen a network with 1 (TPLink) TL R860 Router, 1 Wireless access Device, 1 Interner Phone Adapter (VoIP) & a Switch, where Broadband ISP comes directly to Router. These devices are connected each other via Cable. The ISP provides a Static IP(58.68.25.125), Static Gateway IP (58.68.25.124), DNS IP(202.141.205.1 , 2) and 2 client PCs configuration is as follows ; IP :192.168.0.12 (13), Gateway (192.168.0.11, which is Router's IP), DNS IPs (202.141.205.1 , 2). Now can anyone help me to learn how to setup this Router with ISP provided information using http://192.168.1.1/ so that I myself can setup the same to give internet connectivity to Clients PCs. more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to use VOIP phone service to connect to AOL dial-up?

People usually use a landline phone to dial AOL or other dial-up ISPs. I was wondering if you could just as easily use a VOIP phone connected through a high-speed connection to dial AOL numbers and establish a dial-up connection, if it would work? And yeah, before you tell me why do you need dial-up if you have broadband, read the question again, that's not what I asked. more

Resolved Question: Why do some people still buy routers when ISPs provide them for free when you sign up to their broadband?

The likes of Orange and BT will give you a router for wireless broadband and VOIP so why are people buying routers? Such routers on sale are http://www.ebuyer.com/special/1702?eblt=product_3 I just don't understand why people are buying the routers. I mean, not only do the likes of Orange and BT give you the good quality router with VOIP capability in some cases, but they give you the software to make the link up to their broadband very easy to set up. Why would anyone choose to buy a router rather than use the free one you get?To Brian E and to further clarify to others, too: BT and Orange operate in the UK. Many other isps here also give away the wireless router - or else they subsidise it. Not sure if you are here in UK - probably not since you haven't heard of them. Anyway, BT and Orange give you top of the range routers with great distance and VOIP. It's probably different where you are. I was asking because they are still trying to sell these routers in the UK - both in shops and via companies like ebuyer, etc. If you look at bt.com then the quality of the router equipment is unbeatable quite honestly. No, I'm not advertising! more

Resolved Question: Going into the US Air Force, can't decide on a position...?

I'm going to MEPS on Tues for a physical, I need to decide on what I want to do. I would really want to be a combat controller but I wouldn't meet the requirements. I can run a mile in about 9 mins, do 10-14 pull ups, 50 sit ups, 20 push ups, swim under water for about 50 yards. My overall ASVAB score was 82: Administrative was in low 70s, General in High 70s, Electrical was 92 and Mechanical was 96. I know mechanical stuff perty well, but I hate working on it. For the past 4 years I worked as a service tech for a cable company. I worked on my own and drove a company truck from my house to service calls in my county. I worked on dig/hd/analog tv services, broadband internet and voip phones. At this point I'm thinking of trying to go in to an intelligence field. Since I speak Russian fluently people have suggested linguist. I heard it really doesn't matter if you know another language, they have you learn a language in which there is a high demand, I don't want to be a linguist anyway. Maybe Imagery Intel or Network Intel. I can explore other fields any suggestions would be appreciated. more
