Wireless Broadband Modems Questions asked

Open Question: (Philippines) Pldt MyDSL or Globe Broadband?

Hey guys, I'm a current subscriber to pldt (3mbps) and it sucks. For real, I keep on having to restart my modem after 30 minutes of use or something. I'm getting really fed up and the technicians are pretty lousy. I like the speed when I actually have a chance to use it (ie. when Im not restarting it) but the constant disconnections really piss me off. I was planning to switch to Globe Broadband (10 mpbs) and it seems pretty good. Plus, the download speed is much higher than pldt (well duh, 10 mbps). I'm not sure if they're stable but the prices they offer are good (P3,000 for pldt 3mbps plan while globe offers P3,995 for 10mbps plan). So what do you think guys? Should I switch? Btw, I live in the Makati (rockwell) area, so I hear the connections are supposed to be strong. (Strongest areas I heard were in Forbes, Dasma, and Bel-Air) (Fyi, globe broadband is the wired connection, not the wireless one) more

Resolved Question: Is it possible to overload a router? If so, what would happen?

I have a Linksys WRT300N Wireless N Broadband Router (sorry tried to link to the support page on their website here, but if you click it it just redirects to a "Page not found" page), it has been having an intermittent issue for the fast few months, where generally when I'm doing something on the computer and/or playing a game online on the XBOX/PS3, and/or streaming music to one of the game systems from the computer, I will suddenly loose my internet connection. When I look at the modem (cable), it says that it is connected to the internet. I have to reset both the router and modem to get it to start working again. I have tried connecting my computer directly to the modem, and still no internet, even though it displays on the modem that there is, but I am still not sure if it is the modem, router, or possibly the connection itself-hence my question, is it even possible to overload the router, and would these symptoms be characteristic of such an issue? It only really seems to happen whenever there is a lot going on through the wireless connection. Thanks! Also, the 360 and PS3 are not connected wirelessly, but they are connected to the router, if that makes any difference, everything else is wireless though. more

Open Question: INABILITY TO PICK UP WIFI CONNECTIONS?

IMy colleague has asked me to post this question. "I have an Acer Travelmate 3043wTMi The computer will pick up broadband by connecting it to an Ethernet HomePlug. It will connect to the internet when using a hotspot supplied by a major telephone company. However, I am unable to use WiFi with my Netgear connection at home or in any other equivelent location. Even sitting beside my desktop with it connected to the internet I get a "waiting for users to connect" message even with a 100% reception The NETGEAR on the "Connection to a network" screen says "The settings saved on this computer for the networks do not match the requirements of the network" My Netgear is a Wireless ADSL Modem Router DG834G v3 I have been in contact with Netgear and my broadband supplier and with the Acer technical team. The Netgear technician says its the fault of the computer. The Acer people say its the fault of Netgear. All I know is that I cannot get WiFi connections, which is particularly awkward as I spend a lot of time away from home. Can you advise me? Thanking you in anticipation" Hopefully some members can help - I can't :( more

Voting Question: A question about wireless broadband internet.?

Thank you for reading my question. If you could leave a brief answer it would be most appreciated. I am wondering how ISP's send and receive data. With wireless broadband internet, your ISP sends/receives data to an antenna on the roof of your house which is connected to a modem. My question is what is stopping someone from intercepting the wireless data sent between your modem/antenna and the ISP? Is this connection encrypted or something? How does your ISP even know you exist on their wireless network? I am guessing it must have something to do with the modem that the ISP supplies but I could be wrong... does it have to do with the modem's MAC address or something? Am I even close? more

Resolved Question: Router is very slow, but if it's connected to the modem it's fast please help?

It's an Edimax BR-6204WLg Wireless IEEE802.11 b/g Broadband Router. The reason why our internet is slow as hell for the last couple of months. But it wasn't like this for a year. I've been trying to fix this thing for hours and i'm getting very bored doing everything i can possibly can for this thing. (Almost in the peak of thrashing is and throwing it on the garbage). It's very unresponsive, i've restarted and tried changing it to different firmwares. Nothing worked. Could it be the router's settings? please helpmy firmware is already 1.08, it's still slow :( any information will be helpful thanks more

Voting Question: Why do I have to keep resetting my router?

I have a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband router and my internet keeps disconnecting. What's happened is that I have a computer downstairs where the router and modem is. I have two (recently bought the second) upstairs and they are directly wired to the router. We also used a splitter for the two upstairs computers. The thing is that my internet has been working perfectly until I installed the upstairs computer and hooked it up to the internet. Now the internet randomly shuts down on all computers and we have to reset the router to get it working again, but sometimes it only works for 2-7 minutes. The strange thing is though that the internet on the browsers (Internet Explorer, Firefox, etc.) stops working, but if I'm playing an online game or downloading something, it works fine. Also most of the time the wireless on my Ipod Touch works perfect, but all the other computers don't. So do I need to buy a new router, install new firmware, or something else? Help!I just remembered, sometimes the internet works perfectly until somebody else gets on another computer and then it crashes. The second computer upstairs is clean from viruses because I just purchased it and haven't really downloaded anything yet. The other two computers are also virus-free; I just ran an antivirus scan on both of them. more

Resolved Question: need help with internet connections for hp laptop?

got the laptop about a year ago its a hp in the tx range but searched it on google and there dont seem to be any intenet-related complaints so i dont think its an issue with the model. anyway, have had people to try and fix it but they think theyve fixed it but actually havent. The problem is that it says i'm connected to the internet but the pages load unbelievbly slowly and they only half load most of the time. its not a problem with my broadband speed because thats twenty meg and both my parents laptops and my home computer have fast access to the internet so i know its not a problem with the router and its not to far fom the access point because i've tried it right in front. It wont let me change encryption settings but if anyone knows how i can that would be useful. windows vista is its operating system. occasionally it will run at a decent speed but that is liteally like once in a blue moon. also i have tried unplugging the router and turning off the modem and restarting my laptop and resetting and reinstalling my wireless so please dont suggest that. help would be greatly appreciated. thanks xxxxxxx more

Resolved Question: My Comcast connection frequently slows or drops off, but the modem/Comcast still says its connected. Help!?

I've been experiencing a very frustrating problem for several years now, and in the last few days it has gotten exponentially worse. From time to time, my connection to the internet seems to go down. I have Comcast broadband as my ISP, a Netgear wireless router, and several connected items (2 PCs, occasionally 1 laptop, a Wii, and an Xbox 360 - the PCs and Xbox are connected to the router via an ethernet cable, and the rest connect wirelessly). When my connection appears to go down, all of my devices are affected, but the modem still shows a connection and a signal. Usually if I unplug the router and plug it back in, it solves the problem temporarily, but sometimes its less than an hour before the connection goes down again. Sometimes I don't do anything and the connection appears to restore itself within a minute or two, but usually I have to reset the router. When the downtime fixes itself, I often will get a "connection to the server has been reset" error during the downtime. You would think that the weak point here would be the wireless router, but I have tried two different routers and two different router brands (my previous router was a Linksys), and the same issue occurs on both. In fact, I used to live in an apartment that is downstairs in my building, and the problem occured there as well, with two different modems! I seemed to not experience the problem when I plugged the modem directly in to the computer, which would also point to the router, but then why would I experience the same problem with different brands and models of routers? So the problem is the same despite different devices, different routers, different locations, and different modems. The only constant has been Comcast, but when I call them they swear up and down that the signal strength is strong and that I shouldn't be experiencing problems. That brings us to the last few days, when things have gotten much worse. I am now experiencing connection drop-offs (the ones that fix themselves) every 2-3 minutes, and when the internet is up, the speed is extremely slow. I also tried plugging two separate PCs directly in to the modem, one by one, and it can't even get a connection at all, not even a bad one. Once again, Comcast swears its not their signal (and they're sending a technician out next week) but it's making life pretty painful right now and tomorrow I need to have the ability to work from home. Can anyone please give me any advice? Help! more

Voting Question: Anyone know of any good wireless routers? Also Windows 7 laptop can't connect to internet ?

I've had a few little looks at some routers and they seem to be around £45-75. Is this normal for a wireless router cos i thought this seemed quite expensive... I have Virgin media broadband and a Windows XP computer which is at the moment using an ethernet cable. I have a wireless Windows 7 laptop which is why i want wireless internet, but when i plug the ethernet cable into my laptop.. My laptop recognises it is plugged in but it can't connect and i've tried everything! Will this prevent the wireless connection from working on it? Any ideas why it won't work? I thought it might not work because it is an old modem/ethernet cable on a brand new laptop. Works fine on the XP computer and my boyfriends Xbox Arcade (bought 2 months ago) though. more

Voting Question: Any correlation between the speed of my computer and my cricket modem wireless connection?

I just recently got my 3G CDMA broadband wireless internet modem through CricKet. I got a new E Machine desktop about 2 weeks ago, it has 2GB and 320 GB hard drive. I have about 30 songs on the computer and 2 documents that i've placed on it myself. When i try to view videos on youtube or stream music, it starts out choppy. sometimes ill have to let it "load up" and then go back and push play to watch or listen without interruption. Could it be my modem? Is there anyway to fix this? Thanks! more

Voting Question: Why does my Internet keep dropping out?

I currently have my Internet set up with a wireless router connecting the modem to my computer. I have recently been having some problems keeping my Internet connected. It drops out at random and has become more and more frequent. Windows Diagnose comes up and gives me three options: A problem with your network router or broadband modem might be preventing an Internet connction. When I click this one, it says unsolved and gives me the next two options; Automatically get new IP settings for the network adapter "Local Area Connection" this one does nothing also. And Reset the network adapter "Local Area Connection" and this one works sometimes. I usually have to click it two to four times. Then the intenet connects for anywhere between 5 minutes and 2 hours before I have to repeat the process again. How can I fix this? It is really annoying. I just want the Internet to stay connected.. more

Voting Question: I have a lynksys Cisco router. I have it hooked up properly to my cable modem and computer...?

I have an Intel Pentium 4 with Windows Vista in another room which has wireless networking built into it. Somehow, it can't find any wireless signals except one that says broadband something or other. I click connect to that and it can't. Also it can't diagnose the problem. I know the name of my network, and it never shows up when I search for wireless access points. I believe I need to install new drivers. I clicked on wireless networks on the computer I'm trying to get internet acces on, and it says all drivers are updated. I need a link to find the drivers that I need so that I can find and connect to my wireless router. Thanks! more

Voting Question: Xbox 360 Live connection problems, please try and help me!?

So I have 2000 kbps download speed and between 350-550 kbps upload speed ( it ranges for some reason alot ) and I play Modern Warfare 2 on xbox live and i'm ALWAYS in yellow(bad) connection and it freaking sucks and makes a huge difference in gaming, and i've asked around and people say I should be getting green(good) connection with 2000 DL and 500 UL but my connection always sucks, i've done port forwarding, DMZ and QoS. I have a Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160Nv3 router which goes through my Thompson Pannaway ST546 v6 modem, but my Xbox is wired directly into the router, and the only things that are on the WiFi is my computer which isn't using the internet when i'm on Xbox. I've called and called my internet company and asked all sorts of different questions but they are clueless. My friends who all live around me and have the same or slower internet than me all have better connection that me always. Tomorrow i'm bringing in my modem to my internet service and getting it replaced with a new one just to see if that's the problem. And I guess I have 2 questions, 1. What could be causing me to have bad connection on Modern Warfare 2? (My nat type is Open) and 2. Is there any specific modem that I should ask for that will perhaps help my connection? Or are there xbox live compatible modems? And is my modem a POS and is that why my connection sucks? My modem and router aren't more than 6 months old each. more

My download speed is 1900 and my upload speed is around 400-500 and I play alot of Modern Warfare 2 and i'm always in yellow connection, rarely in green connection and i've never had 4/4 green bars. Is this because my router? Its a Wireless-N Broadband Router WRT160N and my modem is a Pannaway Thompson. I use port forwarding, I have DMZ but I don't use it because I don't know how. Should I be lagging this bad or is my internet fast enough to where I should be in great connection? Because my friends internet is half my speed and he always has better connection then me when we play together. HELP! more

I'm in australia and I'm not sure if this will work, please anyone who knows. Also, any fun facts about release dates and such or even just arguments on whether to buy the ipad or not would be great. Voting Question: Do I need both a router AND a modem for broadband?

Have 2 macs, one a laptop with built in modem and wireless card. The other is a g5 tower. I want to use the G5 in a hard-wire connection to my phoneline and then use the wireless upstairs. I have bought a router but everything I read seems to suggest I need both a modem and a router. Isn't the router a modem? Can't I just wire up from the wall to the router then to the G5? If a modem is needed, where in the chain does it go and what specs will I need? Thanx in advance more

Voting Question: Wireless modem and router to increase signal strength?

Hi, i subscribe for Streamyx 4.0mbps and they give me RIGER wireless ADSL modem 2/2+ DB108-WL. I can use the wireless function. But when i enter my room, which is just 5 meters away from the modem, i got no signal at all. No coverage at all. And my housemate upstairs of course will never got internet. I got my old Linksys Wireless-B 2.4GHz 802.11b broadband router model BEFW11S4 version 4. So, i tried to use this router. Linksys default address is 192.168.1.1. So i tried to connect with the address. Unfortunately, not Linksys configuration page appear, but Streamyx page appear. Because i realized that Streamyx modem also use 192.168.1.1 as it's address. So now, i cannot use my router. And i cannot go far from RIGER modem, even 3-4 meters away, i will get no signal at all. Anybody can help me with this? If someone know how to configure the Linsys, would be much appreciated. I want my housemate to enjoy the internet also... more

Voting Question: Slow Internet confused please help?

Hey recently Ive noticed how slow my internet connection is compared to other peoples. My download speed is terrible(it takes my 8 hours to download something, it took a friend 3 hours on their connection). I often get lag gaming Online (mainly xbox live). Im A bit confused on what the actual problem is? I will try to supply as much information as I can: ISP: bigpond (BigPond Turbo Liberty* (12GB) - ADSL, speed 1500/256kbps) Thomson Speedtouch 530 modem(about 5-6 years old at least, could this be the problem?) Linysys Wireless-N broadband router WRT160N (about 10 months old) Roughly 5 computers on the network but rarely more than 2 online at a given time Cannot recall ever using all of our 12GB of usage in a month. Most of our cables are pretty new. The main thing I want to fix is my lag and the time it takes to find a game when playing xbox live, when I play online I disconnect my modem from my wireless router and connect the ethernet cable to my xbox. And finally what your opinion on Bigpond as a ISP? Cheers more
