Open Question: "Backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used"?
OK, I've been trying to solve this problem for quite some time now. The company where I work has two 1TB drives for backups, I do a full backup to them three times a week and alternate them. (One comes home with me for off site storage every other week.) The backups are between 240 and 250 gig a piece. My question as you can see from the title, is why it keeps giving me this error message. There is no file compression or encryption, I have tried it with the "read from indexes on media" (or something similar) both on and off and still get the same error message. I have tried changing the permissions on everyone to full control and still nothing. I also did a test backup of around 6 gigs of randomly selected data from both hard drives in the server and it restored just fine. I have read that if you copy the backup to the local drive and restore it from there it will work but none of the drives have that kind of space. Any help on this is greatly appreciated, thank you. Also to clear up any confusion that may arise, I am not in the midst of a disaster recovery, I am just trying to get the backups working 100% so that if the company is faced with a such a situation we will be able to recover quickly, again, thanks in advance for the help. moreOpen Question: Recover partition of hard drive?
Prelude: So I was fixing a family computer wishing to upgrade it to SP3, unfortunately during the set up process, somebody partitioned the windows partition to only have 10 gb and a working hard disk for 340gb. The 10gb was so full, it was impossible to install anything on it. I thought, great opportunity to sort out this stupid logical space problem, "not a problem, I'll get Partition Magic to combine the logical hard drives". I check the reviews for partition magic. Got the software, read the documentation, backup wanted floppies...but the pc doesn't have a floppy drive, hell none of my pc's do. Looked up some reviews and asked my mates, nobody had any problems with Partition Magic. I decided screw it, who needs backups, I'll give it a shot. Scenario: Ran Partition Magic, logical drive merge task over night. There was an error. 340 gb ntfs partition now labeled as "Unassigned", 10gb windows partition unaffected. Googling showed that some people reported the same error, some attributed it to a class with norton, no resolutions were given, everyone saying "serves you right for not backing up essential data" Hopefully: Since there was no memory change on the unassigned partition, I'm hoping that there's a method to either change it back to ntfs without reformatting or to recover the lost data with recovery software. At time task was run, there were 260gb worth of data on the hard drive. Some of the data is irreplaceable (photos and old documents) would be fantastic if I could get it back, any help appreciated. moreResolved Question: data recovery on a cf card?
The cf card for my camera has got an error on it, how can I recover the data moreResolved Question: How can I get data off of my bad hard drive?
I have a fujitsu laptop hard drive that had some sectors go bad which prevent it from booting into any OS. Windows OS recovery comes up with an error every time I run it, and my Ubuntu CD has to drop to a primitive shell instead of run in live mode because of an I/O error with sr0. When I do diagnostics, I get error 0146 with error code 2000-0146. However, in recovery mode of the Windows CD, I can still see all of the data and navigate through it. I think that only a tiny part of the hard drive is bad. I want to get some data off of it, but I don't want to pay to do it. What can I do? The Windows disk does not allow you to copy data off of the laptop, only to it. It is a setting in the registry that prevents this, and I can't even get to the registry to change it.... Is there any way that would allow me to leave the hard drive in the original laptop, and copy the data to a usb hard drive that I have. This is because the laptop drive is SATA, and I do not have another computer that uses SATA drives. I might be able to find someone who does, but is there a utility (maybe on UBCD) that I could just copy it to a external USB drive? moreVoting Question: Corrupted external hardrive?
Ok i need help urgently, i have a Seagate 320GB external hardrive, yesterday i was copying files from the hardrive to my new PC and maybe coz there were too many files being copied at the time (50GB+) that it was lagging and the copying process froze half way so i had to close everything down, end all the processes and restart explorer (lol)..... anyway so i was about to try again but this time copy less files at a time, so i double clicked my hdd and a few folders were corrupted :( here's an screenshot showing the folders that are corrupted, they're highlighted: http://i44.tinypic.com/2q3drt1.jpg if i try to click on them, it shows this error message which i Googled btw and found no solution. http://i39.tinypic.com/bi54z6.jpg this hasn't happened to me before and i'm in a panic rite now coz i have a lot of stuff on there, and now the folders containing those files are inaccessible. The only folders that are inaccessible are the ones that contain the files i was copying from the first time, the other folders are still fine. I've tried to use a lot of data recovery programs, as shown in this image: http://i41.tinypic.com/289lagg.jpg but none of them work, i've scanned for almost 9 hours. They did find 40GB+ files but the filenames are gibberish, something like "f239afdkjkj23k4jkj" and they have no extensions. I tried opening the files with Winrar and they just contain a list of folders with gibberish filenames. I tried to rename the files for several extensions like .exe etc and still not working. Those apps i've used couldn't repair a corrupted hardrive either, and those apps are full version btw, not demo. And they're one of the top file recovery programs, i've done my fair bit of Google searching so i know what i'm talking about. So ya is it fully corrupted? Is there any way i can save those folders? Like how there is system restore for PC, is there something that can return those folders to a working state where it's not corrupted or something like that? Please help. right h, i never said i restarted my computer, learn to read. What u suggested didn't make sense either, the folders, as shown in the screenshot, are corrupted. I CAN'T copy the files/folders to my PC and then copy back, besides that's just stupid, that doesn't solve anything. @purebishop, i tried ur suggestions, after CHKDSK finished scanning, all it did was remove the corrupted folders, now those folders are gone and i probably have no way of recovering them at all.......and using HDTune shows i have no error, probably coz the corrupted folders were removed already..... @purebishop, i also tried Acronis Disk Director Suite and couldn't repair the partition, which is the only logical option i see out of all of them, i've looked through all of them and even Googled "how to repair corrupted folders/partitions with Acronis Disk Director Suite" and it doesn't work, apparently it only recovers Hardrives, not external hardrives. BTW, all those apps you suggested, i'm using the FULL VERSION. Nothing works so far... moreVoting Question: Pc unable to boot, hard drive failure....?
file system is corrupt, it was on ntfs, windows xp, i bought a ide to usb converter to try and get it to load up on my laptop and run a data recovery program, but it's not recognising and can't see it as an additional drive etc. so i'm trying to sort out the hard drive back on my old pc, set as master, using recovery console, so far i've tried chkdsk /p & chkdsk /r but it always gets stuck at 67% and i left it like it for hours and it definetly wasn't moving anywhere, It says i can't use the bootcfg /rebuild command as it says "error - failed to successfully scan disks for windows installations this error may be caused by a corrupt file system, which would prevent bootcfg from successfully scanning. use chkdesk to detect any disk errrors. I really need some help, i'm desperate to get this sorted as it has like 4yrs worth of my data :( moreVoting Question: HP dv6000 laptop...Will Not Boot Detailed explanation?

OK, here's what has happened so far and what I tried: Windows wouldn't boot- stuck right after boot screen said no bootable CD Tried several different bootable CDs- said no bootable CD for first drive then hung while accessing the drive that had a disc in it. Tried same thing with other disc drive. Removed HD and put it in an external enclosure: -Windows recognized drive and assigned letter but warning pops up and says it needs formatted before it can be used. -Try to open/browse drive> "I:\ is not accessable. The directory is corrupt and unreadable. I think it is physically working fine but something is wrong with the file structure or partition (it has two partitions) I think it would let me format it but I want to try and recover data first. Is there anyway to recover it? If I do a quick format to correct the file structure could my data be recovered? I tried PC Inspector File Recovery and a few other programs. Here's the weird part. I put a different drive in the original computer (still won't boot- I'm on another one) and I got the same error when trying to boot without a CD, then the same result as before when trying to boot with a CD. It's possible that the power supply damaged the first drive and now has messed up the second one as well but the first one seems fine other than the file structure now that it is in an enclosure. What should I try next? -My Computer shows it as 0 bytes used and 0 free. -file system type is blank (RAW?) it was NTFS -device status says it is running properly (and I can here it spin) -Can't run disc check "because windows can not access the disc" moreResolved Question: Iphone 3g software update?
Hi everyone. Everytime i plug my iphone 3g into itunes for a software update, half way through updating it tells me it cannot update and then my iphone goes into recovery mode so i have to activate it and put all my data from the back up back on it. Windows went through a recovery profile... came back and said no errors on system and indicated windows needed to be rebooted to restore. Before we do anything else, what are best mechanics to recover the hard drive data? moreResolved Question: Hardware related "NTLDR is missing" error?
Last night I removed my old power supply and installed a new power supply and when I booted my computer for the first time with my new psu I got the boot error "NTLDR is missing." After researching for a bit on one of my working computers the most common reason I got for this error is bad or corrupt boot file, but I didn't change any other hardware other than the psu which is why I think I have a different cause for my problem. I used the Windows XP installation CD to see if I could shed some light on the problem and when I went to repair a windows installation it listed my drives as follows: D Drive - Windows Partiton E Drive - Partioned Space Nomarked Drive - Partioned Space Now I have three 150 gig HDDs that are usually labeled as C,D,E - the Windows XP recovery console AND Windows XP installation CD did not recognize the C drive as the primary windows installation anymore (as C). My board has 2 SATA hookups and 2 IDE hookups running currently. My C Drive and DVD drive are hooked into my SATA hookups while the other two HDDs are configured through my IDE hookups. I've had no problems with this setup for over a year now and I'm looking for something I may have done wrong so I don't have to wipe and start over again and lose all my data. I'm 90% sure I installed the new psu correctly. The 24 pin, 8 pin, and all sata/power component cables are in the correct drives/fans, etc. Thanks for any help. moreResolved Question: HDD Data Recovery SAMSUNG HM320JI?
I have a Samsung SATA HM320JI 320GB disk which died on me. It happened by itself without any physical or electrical disturbance. Each time I attach it (external usb box, sata cable to motherboard; on different computers) I hear the drive platter spin up, a few head movement (no loud or repeating click) and platters spin down slowly. I bought an exact same HDD and swapped the controller PCB on the bottom but the results didn't change. I have sensitive data on the drive. I am a longtime Mac user who has recently took ownership of a HP laptop (it's a long story.) After obtaining the recovery disks from HP I proceeded to recover this machine to factory settings. This is the procedure: Restore the PC to its original condition with the recovery discs If the PC cannot access Windows, and the Recovery Manager cannot be started by selecting the F11 key on start-up, use the recovery discs to start the PC and restore the hard drive to the original operating condition by following the steps below. NOTE:Please be aware that using your system's recovery discs may take two hours, and that using discs ordered directly from HP may take four to six hours and include several restarts. The HP Recovery Manager function on the recovery discs examines the condition of the hard drive and attempts to fix any system errors so that the PC can start and run Windows. If the disc sectors used by the HP Recovery Manager are corrupted or cannot be repaired, the Recovery Manager will overwrite all the data and reconfigure the entire hard drive. Use the recovery discs to restore the PC by following the steps below. Open the disc drive door and turn off the PC. Insert the first Recovery disc in the disc drive and close the door. Press the power button to turn on the PC. The HP Recovery Manager window appears during the boot process. If the HP Recovery Manager can access the hard drive, a prompt is displayed to backup the user files before continuing the recovery. If the HP Recovery Manager cannot access the hard drive to fix the system errors, the HP Recovery Manager will overwrite all the data and reconfigure the entire hard drive to its original condition. Follow the prompts to insert any additional recovery discs in the disc drive. After restoring the PC to its original factory template condition, it is extremely important to obtain and install updates for the PC and its software, which has been released since the manufacture date of the PC. Use the HP Drivers and Downloads page to search for updates relating to HP Update, HP Health Check, and HP QuickPlay. Also, search for an updated BIOS and any updated device drivers. What a time waster. Reinstalling the OS on a Mac is so easy. So why a PC instead of a Mac? moreVoting Question: My computer screen is all choppy and goes to blue screen immediately after desktop comes up. Etc... Help?

I have a Gateway laptop, MP6954, running Windows XP. I believe this problem started out with a virus or trojan, and I have no idea where to go from here. When I boot up Windows, sometimes I get a desktop asking for my password, sometimes it doesn't bring up the login/password screen [like it was doing before this whole problem started]. When I get the password, I just hit enter and it looks like it wants to bring up the desktop, but never does, just wallpaper. Same with when it doesn't bring up the login screen. From here, I can't do anything. At one point, Windows was saying it needed to close down the Windows Logon Process, but now it says nothing, just a blank wallpaper. I cannot bring up Task Manager. So I thought, safe mode! After trying all my options, I got absolutely nowhere. Safe Mode brings up several lines like, "multi-disk(0)partition(1)partition(1)drivers etc." From here, I can only reboot. Safe Mode with Networking gets me back to the blank desktop, no task manager, etc. Last Known Good Configuration takes me to the desktop with no options. Safe Mode with Command Prompt brings up more multi-disk(0) messages. Time to pull out the recovery disc that Gateway provided. I try running this, but after the Gateway logo comes up, I get the BSOD, error c000021a Fatal System Error, the system has shut down. So, basically, I cannot boot Windows, I cannot get to a command prompt, and my recovery disk isn't working. Anyone have any other ideas? I'm more than willingly to lose my data to reinstall Windows XP, but I can't even get to that option! TIA for any help/advice! I'll pick up the XP disc tonight and see if that gets me any further. moreResolved Question: Computer Restoration Help?

On the first, copying files, it just jumps to 100%, on expanding files it goes very slowly counting to 100%, not sure if that's normal. Before coming to the last step the laptop restarts and eventually comes to the last step, completing installation, there it just sits and goes no were! The only indication is that the hard drive activity light will work steady for two minutes then nothing at all. After approx 15 to 20 minutes the screen goes black and all I see is the mouse. The only thing now is to force a shut down. On the second attempt I formatted the recovery partition, I have my data on a external hard drive. So I figured I don't need that anyhow. Nothing different. On the third try I formatted everything and through the media direct CD utility I re-sized the C partition to use the whole drive. There was no difference, the install would freeze on the last step. I also have a Windows XP Home OS that I figured I would try and see if that would work. But I get an error message that windows cannot find the hard drive and to make sure its connected and drivers are installed. I don't get this with Vista. If I understand correctly, the Media Direct DVD is used as some kind of driver, since the instructions for it say to install it before installing Vista. Media Direct will also get its own partition, about 2GB. I would really appreciate some wisdom with this situation! I am usually able to figure stuff like this out myself, but this time, I'm at a loss. Thanks in advance for your input! The laptop does not have an operating system installed as its sitting right now. Remember the drive is formatted. The Vista install does not complete because of some unseen reason to me. My laptop's (Compaq Presario) hard drive crashed, so I bought an SATA HDD USB docking station in order to see if I could retrieve any data from the drive. I have it all hooked up, the drive shows up, but when I try to explore it, an error message pops up that says it's not accessible and : "The file or directory is corrupted or unreadable." Does this mean that there is no possibility of data recovery, or is there something else I'm supposed to be doing that might help the process? Thank you so much for any help. ETA: Thanks, Mercuri & Chris. I tried to run a check disk on the drive by clicking properties, tool, then "error checking" - is that right? But it tells me that it can't check the disk because windows cannot access the disk. I'll try the boot cd you suggested now. Thanks so much for the help! moreResolved Question: Is my data still recoverable?
I had a hard drive problem a couple of months ago. I finally got around to putting the hard disk in another computer and was in the middle of taking over ownership of the files when I got a message saying that "the disk in drive e: is not formatted, do you want to format it now" I was logged in as administrator in safe mode to take ownership of the files. I was able to transfer most of my family pictures, but was not able to get to a lot of other photos and files before the final error occurred. I had gotten the message several times during the recovery process, but it finally gave up and now I can't access anything. Is the data still recoverable, or am I completely out of luck? Thanks in advance. I will resolve this question. moreResolved Question: Toshiba Satellite Pro L40 - can't restore to factory settings.?
Can't Recover my Laptop with Out-Of-The Box HDDrecovery Utility. Hi. I have a Laptop with a 80Gb hard drive that came pre-installed with windows Vista Home Basic. It originally had 3 partitions: 1. A hidden Toshiba System Volume... I know that this is the Windows Recovery Environment Partition vista creates. 2. My C: Drive, and 3. HDDRECOVERY... a toshiba installed partition that should allow me to reformat and recover my hard drive with its out-of-the-box settings. Recently, I've decided to dual-boot with Ubuntu, and so I partitioned my 68 GB partition (the C: Drive), and made a 55 GB Vista one and the rest went into an EXT3 Partition with my ubuntu on it. I didn't like th GRUB loader, so I decided to try and use System Commander (it's a Boot Manager that allows you to select from a graphical menu on boot). Unfortunately, System Commander basically wreaked havoc with my MBR, and all my OSs won't boot anymore. I've used the Ubuntu LiveCD to copy all my personal files (music, documents, videos... etc) into my External Hard Disk Drive. I had planned to use Toshiba HDD Recover to restore my computer to its vista state. I had successfully accessed this utility by pressing '0' on boot. However, after I tried it's options about restoring the system to out-of-the-box settings, it didn't work. When I used to option restore all default partitions (I assume this would reconfigure my computer to a 3partition HDD), it said error: Unable to create partition. (this error also aparently unformatted that partition... I had to reformat it in the Ubuntu Live-CD environment... and it would seem that all my date in that partition has been lost) When I try to option on restoring the laptop but keeping my own current number of partitions, it says that their isn't enough space in my Hard Drive. Which is rather strange. I'm afraid to use the option "Erase all data from Disk"... shall this option reformat my hard drive? How will I ever restore my Vista (it's expensive, and I naturally don't have a DVD or a serial key with me, as Toshiba no longer ships Disks with its laptops... only recovery partitions)? My latest idea was copy the entire HDDRECOVERY PARTITION to my EXTERNAL HDD, then erase all data from the Disk, then using Ubuntu Live CD, create a partition in the unformatted hard disk and use the partition... hopefully, that would work. But I have doubts that the TOSHIBA SYSTEM RECOVERY utility that uses the images in the HDDR partition is standalone- it might need vista to run. and if I format the disk, there won't be any vista left, wouldn't there be? I could really use some help. P,S, In retrospect, I feel very dumb for not creating a Recover DVD... relying on a recovery partition is bad. moreResolved Question: Hard drive error...need to format disk. Please help!?

Hi there, Last night, when i turned on my laptop, it shows me a death blue screen with an error (i forgot wat was the error). I tried to reboot my computer and also tried to run it in safe mode, but didn't work. Then i restart my comp. again and press "R" for recovery on startup. It took me to the system restore and recovery, where it ask me to insert the system restore disk. I didn't have any system restore/recovery disk. so i insert the "install operating system" cd. I was hoping that if it is not the right cd then the system will warn me. But it start restoring my files and data. So i thought it worked. During recovery it didn't ask me anything. I mean no window pops up for yes or no question and it just reinstalled my computer from back to it's original. Now i have lost everything. I'm just wondering, if there is anyway i can get my files and pics back or i can restore it back where it was showing me the death blue screen? So i can take it to the BESTBUY to recover it and bring all my data and files back. Cuz, before it reinstalled my comp. it actually backed up and copying all my files. So i'm just hoping that there might be a luck. Any kind of help or suggestion will be appreciated. Thanx in advance moreResolved Question: Damaged Windows File System?
hi. i was just about to do this (but i need to know if i will lose and data like photos and music) Method 2: Damaged File System If the second parameter (0xbbbbbbbb) of the Stop error is 0xC0000032, the file system is damaged. If this is the case, restart the computer to the Recovery Console, and then use the chkdsk /r command to repair the volume. After you repair the volume, check your hardware to isolate the cause of the file system damage. To do this, follow these steps: 1.Start your computer by using the Windows startup disks, or with the Windows installation disk if your computer can start from the CD drive. 2.When the Welcome to Setup screen appears, press R to select the repair option. 3.If you have a dual-boot or multiple-boot computer, select the Windows installation that you want to access from the Recovery Console. 4.Type the administrator password when you are prompted to do this. Note If no administrator password exists, press ENTER. 5.At the command prompt, on the drive where Windows is installed, type chkdsk /r, and then press ENTER. 6.At the command prompt, type exit, and then press ENTER to restart your computer. If this procedure does not work, repeat it and use the fixboot command in step 5 instead of the chkdsk /r command. moreResolved Question: I bought hp laptop with vista window but they did not give me window back up cd...?
I would have to make this cd by myself when I on it first time but I did not it that time can I make window back up cd now there is alos a recovery disk creation option will i have to use this option and I asked same question with hp helper and they replied me.......as I would request you to reinstall the windows either through recovery partition if recovery partition has been shipped with the Notebook by performing the below mention workaround. 1. Press the power button to turn on the PC, and press F11 on the keyboard immediately while the computer is starting up. The HP Backup and Recovery Manager window will appear. 2. Click advanced options, select the System recovery option, and then click next. 3. If the Recovery Solution can access the hard drive it displays a prompt to backup up user files before continuing the recovery. You may either backup your files, or skip the backup and recover the operating system. 4. If the Recovery Solution cannot access the hard drive to fix the system errors, use the set of Recovery disks that you created to recover the hard drive to its original condition. Note: - Personal data and software you have installed on the notebook will be lost during the OS reinstall. HP recommends that you make a backup copy of all personal data before beginning this process. HP is not responsible for any data loss. Regarding dual boot operating system I would also need to inform you that HP does not recommend dual boot of operating system. but I m still confused I m not that clear is anybody know and has done this thing so plz guide me step by step easily plz i will be ve moreResolved Question: Error 17, not Ubuntu!?

Patients recovering from an appendix operation normally spend an average of 6.3 days in the hospital. The distribution of recovery times is normal with a s.d. of 2 days. The hospital is trying a new recovery program designed to lessen the time patients spend in the hospital. The first 16 appendix patients in this new program were released from the hospital in an average of 5.3 days. On the basis of these data, can the hospital conclude that the new program has a significant reduction of recovery time? Test at the .05 level of significance. The appropriate statistical procedure for this example would be a a. t-test b. z-test (I chose B) Is this a one-tailed or a two-tailed test? (I said one-tailed) The most approximate null hypothesis would be: A. μ new program = 6.3 B. μ new program = 5.5 C. μ new program ≤ 6.3 D. μ new program ≥ 6.3 (I said C) Setup the criteria for making a decision. That is, find the critical value using an alpha = 0.5 using your tables. (I said -0.5.) I have a 500GB external hard drive which has just stopped working and most probably I have lost all my data. It never fell nor was dropped. It says "Rock Mobile Disk" on it's container, while the actual hard drive is manufactured by Western Digital. HELP!!?
I want to recover some files that I have in some floppy disks. I´ve tried several softwares and some of them have worked. Tried Undelete Plus and Recova but none of them worked for me (with Undelete Plus I don´t know why but I only had the option to scan C: drive only, not floppy or any other drive, and Recova found errors and didn´t do anything for me). The one that worked is Active@ Floppy Recovery 2.0, it showed all my files in the floppy disk! But as it is a demo version I cannot recover all my files. The thing is I´m sure my files are there and I can recover them but I need a good FREE software to recover them ALL. I don´t want to pay since there are only 2 floppy disks and I´m never going to use the software again! I no longer use floppy disks! It´s all about USB memory disks now.... Please tell me, which software do you recommend?? please please pleaseeeee!!! ps. the problem with my floppy disks is the classic note that they no longer have formatt and if I want to formatt them... but I haven´t done anything like that cuz I know I can recover my files.... moreResolved Question: Yikes! Need some serious help, document recovery problem!
Ok so yesterday I made some alterations to a very long Wordpad document, I saved it and called it a night. This morning when I opened it half the text was missing. There was no jumbled characters or error messages of any sort, but the document literally seemed to have been cut in half. I had the begining part but the end was just gone. I have seen this happen a few times but usually it's because of a power surge in the middle of typing a document. I've only had this happen once before under normal circumstances (programs and computer are shut down correctly) and it wasn't a major deal, i'd only just started on that document. But this one had rather a lot of work put into it and although I have an older back-up copy it would be a royal pain to have to retype all the extra content. Does anyone know... A) What causes this? B) How, if it's possible, I might recover the lost text? I've tried the "Recover text from any file" trick in Microsoft Word, but it didn't work, most of the document was still missing. The file size hasn't decreased which makes it seem as if the data is still there somehow. moreTop Data Error Recovery Links
