Forensic Data Recovery Questions asked

Resolved Question: Pressured to hand over phone when i could find out a possable secret?

In 1st january 2008 my partner had met a guy on the first day she also met him and got in his car, she claims he sexually assaulted her, but on her phone records it shows her textin and calling up to 9 days until no more of his number was showing...i have got the phone which she was using, and i can get a forensic data recovery agency to recover the deleted texts sent and received, the only reason the confession came out was due to me havin a urine infection, and when doctor said it could be a STD i pressured her into talking up, as we been together for 3 years and i aint slept with no pne or done any sexual stuff etc...so now shes pressuring me to hand her the phone bcos she needs photos she took for her college course, but i think there could be more to it, as lately when i told her about the forensic centre she all of a sudden been askin for the phone... and being childish sayin she will leave me etc. if i dont giv it to her, but i love her, i just wana know if she was seein him  more

Resolved Question: Wiping USB flash drive. How many passes?

Hi, I read hard drives magnetic like the ones in your computer need to have about 7 passes so that data previously on the drive isn't even recoverable by forensic tools like electronic microscopes. (you who don't understand, a hard drive still holds data even if you deleted the file. so long to copy a file but deleting it takes 1 second. It's because Windows just says file off the drive's table of contents but the file is still on the drive. Special software can recover the file but so let's overwrite the drive with another file. Now the software can't recover it. That's what wiping. It takes all deleted files and wipes with random 1s and 0s. But not end of story. Special equipment that government uses look at drive and see data bit on drive isn't a 1 or a 0. It's 0.8. The government &high end recovery labs use microscope. 0.8 means the data in previous file was a 0, but now it's a 1. A 0.4 means it is sometimes a 1 mostly a 0. So the idea is garble 7 passes.) How many wipes for flash?  more

Voting Question: I have a laptop hard drive that I sent to a DataRecoverCenter. Their budget for the job is around $1000. Help?

The laptop started having a flicker on the screen and little later, the hard drive started making strange noises (like it was switching off, but repeatedly for a few times) then the computer hanged. As the data on the disk is so important I decided to immediately take it to a DataRecoverCenter here where I live (police, courts use them so they are good). The issue is the price. Can I have it solved cheaper, maintaining integrity of my data by trying other alternatives? Their report is: MBR (Master Boot Record) failure, as it is damaged, making access to the logical unit of the hard drive impossible. The unit needs an MBR restructuring, as well as the partition table and file allocation table. I am far from an expert in data recovery, but is this much more than a "fixmbr"? Could I do this? Or is this the kind of situation where the files all become orphans and a lot of "forensics" has to be undergone? Any insight is highly appreciated. Rock from Portugal  more
