Open Question: "Backup file contains unrecognized data and cannot be used"?
OK, I've been trying to solve this problem for quite some time now. The company where I work has two 1TB drives for backups, I do a full backup to them three times a week and alternate them. (One comes home with me for off site storage every other week.) The backups are between 240 and 250 gig a piece. My question as you can see from the title, is why it keeps giving me this error message. There is no file compression or encryption, I have tried it with the "read from indexes on media" (or something similar) both on and off and still get the same error message. I have tried changing the permissions on everyone to full control and still nothing. I also did a test backup of around 6 gigs of randomly selected data from both hard drives in the server and it restored just fine. I have read that if you copy the backup to the local drive and restore it from there it will work but none of the drives have that kind of space. Any help on this is greatly appreciated, thank you. Also to clear up any confusion that may arise, I am not in the midst of a disaster recovery, I am just trying to get the backups working 100% so that if the company is faced with a such a situation we will be able to recover quickly, again, thanks in advance for the help. moreOpen Question: Please help me Cisco IT?

I added an old 40GB hard drive to my computer about a month and a half ago after slaving it and it has work fine up until a few days ago. BIOS and Device Manager recognize it but My Computer, Disk Management and any other programs don't . I've tried to recover the drive with Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, it recognizes the physical drive but doesn't recognize a logical drive and the scan can't find one. It can't create an image of it or do raw data recovery either. Norton Ghost doesn't work either. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in but it doesn't work. I really want to fix it rather then clear it as it has a lot of important files on it. What do I do? moreOpen Question: HELP! I purchased a 1TB Seagate Freeagent and knocked it over, dislodging the usb port from the drive. I purchased a Rosewill hard drive enclose and installed the HD from the Seagate into it. The 'device manager' program that came with the Seagate flashed 'no drive connected' when I plugged in the USB cable. About 10 minutes later my computer recognized the HD, the usb with green check icon appeared and windows searched for drivers. The drivers were installed and the HD now appears in my device manager. Device properties show the HD as ST310003 40AS USB Device. Device type: Disk drives Manufacturer: (Standard disc drives) Location: on USB Mass Storage Device device status: The device is working properly When I click the Volumes tab, it shows no Disk, Type, Status, Partition Style, Capacity, or anything. Updating the driver doesn't work. Computer > Manage > Disc Management shows my regular hard drive as Disc 0, and my External as disc 2, but says it's 'unknown' and 'unreadable.' The properties there show Disc: Disc 1 Type: Unknown Status: Unreadable Partition Style: Not Applicable Capacity: O MB Unallocated space: 0 MB Reserved space: 0 MB Is there anything I can try to get my computer to recognize the drive? Ok i need help urgently, i have a Seagate 320GB external hardrive, yesterday i was copying files from the hardrive to my new PC and maybe coz there were too many files being copied at the time (50GB+) that it was lagging and the copying process froze half way so i had to close everything down, end all the processes and restart explorer (lol)..... anyway so i was about to try again but this time copy less files at a time, so i double clicked my hdd and a few folders were corrupted :( here's an screenshot showing the folders that are corrupted, they're highlighted: http://i44.tinypic.com/2q3drt1.jpg if i try to click on them, it shows this error message which i Googled btw and found no solution. http://i39.tinypic.com/bi54z6.jpg this hasn't happened to me before and i'm in a panic rite now coz i have a lot of stuff on there, and now the folders containing those files are inaccessible. The only folders that are inaccessible are the ones that contain the files i was copying from the first time, the other folders are still fine. I've tried to use a lot of data recovery programs, as shown in this image: http://i41.tinypic.com/289lagg.jpg but none of them work, i've scanned for almost 9 hours. They did find 40GB+ files but the filenames are gibberish, something like "f239afdkjkj23k4jkj" and they have no extensions. I tried opening the files with Winrar and they just contain a list of folders with gibberish filenames. I tried to rename the files for several extensions like .exe etc and still not working. Those apps i've used couldn't repair a corrupted hardrive either, and those apps are full version btw, not demo. And they're one of the top file recovery programs, i've done my fair bit of Google searching so i know what i'm talking about. So ya is it fully corrupted? Is there any way i can save those folders? Like how there is system restore for PC, is there something that can return those folders to a working state where it's not corrupted or something like that? Please help. right h, i never said i restarted my computer, learn to read. What u suggested didn't make sense either, the folders, as shown in the screenshot, are corrupted. I CAN'T copy the files/folders to my PC and then copy back, besides that's just stupid, that doesn't solve anything. @purebishop, i tried ur suggestions, after CHKDSK finished scanning, all it did was remove the corrupted folders, now those folders are gone and i probably have no way of recovering them at all.......and using HDTune shows i have no error, probably coz the corrupted folders were removed already..... @purebishop, i also tried Acronis Disk Director Suite and couldn't repair the partition, which is the only logical option i see out of all of them, i've looked through all of them and even Googled "how to repair corrupted folders/partitions with Acronis Disk Director Suite" and it doesn't work, apparently it only recovers Hardrives, not external hardrives. BTW, all those apps you suggested, i'm using the FULL VERSION. Nothing works so far... moreVoting Question: Pc unable to boot, hard drive failure....?

To make a long story short I just got a new external hard drive and hoped to save files on it and transfer them to my PS3. Can the installation of a DVD-ROM drive wipe a hard drive? Last night I almost drew that conclusion after my secondary hard drive seemingly dumped all of its data (298GB of 299 free it says). The problem is that I have no idea what these files are until (and sometimes even after) I attempt to open them. This leads me to wonder if something I once read about called symbolic links could be responsible. My question is--How do I restore my symbolic links? Or can I? Because the boot drive is smaller than the amount of data that I need to recover, I can't use that. Few days ago I was doing my normal every day browsing on the computer, I got a warning from Avast telling me there was a virus on my system, I moved it to the chest like it suggested I do.. well I had some stuff downloading from Microsoft and I was also in a Word document, when the prompt came up to restart the computer I closed out Word and was attempting to shut down the rest of the programs running so it could shut down properly. Seems fate has a sense of humor since the power here went out for a few seconds before windows shut down properly. I figured I'd start back up in safe mode just in case. Well my computer refused to boot, I was stuck in a boot loop, I grabbed my XP disc and went into the recovery console. Now here's where it has me confused.. when it did it's search for installations it only found 1 C:\WINDOWS, in case you all are wondering.. it was telling me I no longer had XP installed on my system. So I did the only thing I could think of, I deleted an old partition I didn't use anymore and installed XP on it. Here's the best part of the whole situation, upon finishing the install. I noticed my C: Drive was still there... and it still has all of my files on it (that I can see). It won't allow me to check the Desktop Folder or any others under the other Username I used, I simply get. "Access is Denied" I've turned off simple file sharing and all that, even gave permission to the new account I made on the new install but it will not allow me to access it at all. Here's the question(s), using a data recovery program would it be possible to retrieve all of the files that were on my Desktop under the other Username? That's where I had most of my stuff.. Pictures, Videos, Music, all of those folders were on the desktop and besides a few files in the Downloads folder they are all that's important to me and I'm wondering if I hooked up another HD and made it the Master and this one with all of the files on my C: drive the slave would I be able to access the files then? Or would it be possible to use the Recovery Console and use the /Rebuild option under Bootcfg to fix the issue or would that potentionally erase the files I'm trying to access? If anyone has any ideas please let me know. Quick little update. Going off of an idea I got reading FullMetal's post I decided to boot into safe mode using the username I created on the fresh install of XP and give that full permission and ownership and voila, I can access the Desktop file under the other username and all of my files still seem to be in order there so all I need is another Hard Drive to copy the files over. Thanks for the inspiration Well don't know why I'm surprised it wasn't that easy. I now have access to the files under the username but if I attempt to copy and paste any of them to the new partition I get an error. Error Copying File or Folder Cannot copy xxxx : Access is denied Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use. Any ideas on how to fix this or possibly work around it? I intend to copy the files over to a new drive but some files I would prefer having now, some of my music and some of my Word documents. I've granted access to my account but apparently it's not enough to allow me to copy files from that partition and put them on the one I'm using now. Final update, I got the problem solved finally, I can copy and paste files from one partition to another. Shouldn't have anymore issues once I get a new HD moreResolved Question: External harddrive DATA RECOVERY help please?
my hdd went into RAW and with ParitionMagic i got it to go back to fat32 (which i know is inferior to NTFS, but this is the way i originally got the drive). but my files disappeared and when i look at how much space is used it says 100% free. however, if i use GetDataBack or whatever, i can see the files perfectly and none are corrupt. how do i make the files view like it would had the drive not been reformatted? i don't have anywhere to copy the files elsewhere and burning so many cds is too time consuming (and cds are an archaic method imho) moreResolved Question: HD failure - Please help?
OK, here's what has happened so far and what I tried: Windows wouldn't boot- stuck right after boot screen said no bootable CD Tried several different bootable CDs- said no bootable CD for first drive then hung while accessing the drive that had a disc in it. Tried same thing with other disc drive. Removed HD and put it in an external enclosure: -Windows recognized drive and assigned letter but warning pops up and says it needs formatted before it can be used. -Try to open/browse drive> "I:\ is not accessable. The directory is corrupt and unreadable. I think it is physically working fine but something is wrong with the file structure or partition (it has two partitions) I think it would let me format it but I want to try and recover data first. Is there anyway to recover it? If I do a quick format to correct the file structure could my data be recovered? I tried PC Inspector File Recovery and a few other programs. Here's the weird part. I put a different drive in the original computer (still won't boot- I'm on another one) and I got the same error when trying to boot without a CD, then the same result as before when trying to boot with a CD. It's possible that the power supply damaged the first drive and now has messed up the second one as well but the first one seems fine other than the file structure now that it is in an enclosure. What should I try next? -My Computer shows it as 0 bytes used and 0 free. -file system type is blank (RAW?) it was NTFS -device status says it is running properly (and I can here it spin) -Can't run disc check "because windows can not access the disc" moreResolved Question: Help Data recovery urgent !!?

I have an external hard drive with bunch of videos in avi format. They range from 4-17 GB. I accidentally deleted them tonight. Immediately afterward, I stopped writing anything to the drive. Since I've tried a variety of data recovery tools (Recuva, Restoration, Handy Recovery, Free Undelete, etc). All of them find the avi files, but they only register ~5 KB and won't recover. Another program Data Recovery Wizard sees them in their full size, but won't recover them. Any thoughts as to what's going on and what I can do to get my videos back? Thank you very much. moreResolved Question: Someone formatted my hard disk and reinstalled windows, without saving my data. Can I still recover them?
As a "surprise gift", my assistant formatted my PC and installed windows vista. However, she conveniently forgot that I have (or had) all my works in there, including unfinished ones which are due anytime soon. Is it possible to recover them (at least 80%)? I've used several recovery software, but didn't find anything useful, only old files. Your advice on this? JF, your link doesn't work. moreResolved Question: Will someone help me with Vista Home Premium Backup problems?
I am having untold trouble with the Backup in Vista Home Premium. After about a year of fooling around my system was clogged with a bunch of nonsense and I decided to do a full Recovery and return everything to factory settings. I did a full system backup at that time (Sept 19, 2008). I tried to make a set of Recovery disks but the OS would not allow it (I still don’t know why). I formatted and proceeded with the Recovery. That much was successful. When I tried to restore my files the OS wouldn’t cooperate (I thought maybe I needed an upgrade to Vista but people at Best Buy have tried to access the backup without success). At this time I was allowed to make the one set of Recovery disks allowed by my OS. I have them available but they remain untested. Now the OS will not allow me to do a backup. All attempts, before and after the Recovery, have been made through the Backup and Restore Center of Vista Home Premium. Do you have any idea what I am doing wrong? I would really like to get those data files back from the backup I made in Sept. I have retained them in hopes that some time or some how I might be able to get it back. Currently I am running without any sort of backup and that makes me very uncomfortable. moreResolved Question: Hardware related "NTLDR is missing" error?
Last night I removed my old power supply and installed a new power supply and when I booted my computer for the first time with my new psu I got the boot error "NTLDR is missing." After researching for a bit on one of my working computers the most common reason I got for this error is bad or corrupt boot file, but I didn't change any other hardware other than the psu which is why I think I have a different cause for my problem. I used the Windows XP installation CD to see if I could shed some light on the problem and when I went to repair a windows installation it listed my drives as follows: D Drive - Windows Partiton E Drive - Partioned Space Nomarked Drive - Partioned Space Now I have three 150 gig HDDs that are usually labeled as C,D,E - the Windows XP recovery console AND Windows XP installation CD did not recognize the C drive as the primary windows installation anymore (as C). My board has 2 SATA hookups and 2 IDE hookups running currently. My C Drive and DVD drive are hooked into my SATA hookups while the other two HDDs are configured through my IDE hookups. I've had no problems with this setup for over a year now and I'm looking for something I may have done wrong so I don't have to wipe and start over again and lose all my data. I'm 90% sure I installed the new psu correctly. The 24 pin, 8 pin, and all sata/power component cables are in the correct drives/fans, etc. Thanks for any help. moreTop Recovery Of Data Files Links
