There are several definitions of information currently in use; however, each of these definitions are generally too broad. For example, one definition of information includes symbols with or without meaning, and another includes everything in its definition of information. Examples of codes would be the English Alphabet, words, and syntax; hieroglyphics; or codes used in computers (For example, C, Fortran, or Cobol). 2.Meaning (semantics): Meaning enables communication by representing real objects or concepts with specific symbols, words, or phrases. For example, the word chair is not the physical chair but represents it. Likewise, the name Bob is not the physical person but represents the real person. When words are associated with real objects or concepts, it gives the word meaning 3.Expected Action (pragmatics): Expected action conveys an implicit or explicit request or comment to perform a given task. For example, in the statement, Go to the grocery store and buy some chocolate chips, the expected action is that someone will go to the store. This does not mean the action will actually happen, but it is expected to happen. 4.Intended Purpose (apobetics): Intended purpose is the anticipated goal that can be achieved by the performance of the expected actions. For example, in the statement Go to the grocery store and buy some chocolate chips, the intended purpose might be to bake and eat chocolate chip cookies. These four essential attributes specify the definition domain for information. A definition of information (Universal Definition of Information) was formulated by using these four attributes: An encoded, symbolically represented message conveying expected action and intended purpose. Encoded Code Symbolically represented message Meaning Expected action Action Intended purpose Purpose Anything not containing all four attributes is not considered information by this Universal definition of Information (UDI). These include models, hypotheses, theories, assumptions, speculations, etc. This is the lowest level of scientific certainty because man's understanding of reality is incomplete, faulty, and constantly changing. A very large gap exists between this level of science and the highest level. This highest level contains scientific laws. Scientific laws are precise statements formulated from discoveries made through observations and experiments that have been repeatedly verified and never contradicted. There are scientific laws about matter (Newton's law of gravity, laws of thermodynamics, laws of electricity, and laws of magnetism(. There is Pasteur's law about life (law of biogenesis). Resolved Question: Why does "language bigotry" determine how people criticize Biblical languages for how they group animals?

In coming to the USA for post-doc work, I've been fascinated by the ways the Bible is debated. As a scientist, I'm particularly interested in the ways which many Americans seem to assume that ancient languages must somehow define their vocabulary to comply with modern classifications. For example, I keep seeing complaints here in R&S about "bats are not birds" and "a whale is not a fish" -- as if an ancient language of the Near East should comply with the distinctions of modern science. (Indeed, at first I thought these were jokes by way of being facetiously anachronistic.) Obviously, many languages (both ancient and modern) have a word for "flying creatures" (or "winged creature") which puts bats into the same semantic domain (i.e. a grouping of vocabulary by related meanings) as birds with no concern about how scientists group them. (The modern taxonomy of the Creationist Christian biologist, Carl Linnaeus, which is the basis for the classification and naming of living things can hardly be expected to apply to the vocabulary distinctions of an ancient language.) Yet, I keep seeing presumably sincere postings where people seem to assume that a language/culture is "wrong" when it doesn't look at the world in the same way that modern English does. WHY THESE ASSUMPTIONS ABOUT LANGUAGES (and therefore, the Bible)? IS IT EXPLAINED BY THE MONO-LINGUAL LIMITATIONS OF MOST AMERICANS? ===== OPTIONAL: another example ======================= Of course, there is no mention of whales in the Bible. (The Hebrew text simply says "a largesea-creature". Because that brings to mind related English phrases such as "a big fish" or "an enormous swimming beast", both translations would be possible -- and various translations of the Bible over the centuries since have expressed the semantic range of the Hebrew word in varied ways.) Yet, I've found it interesting that many people in the USA seem to think that ancient Hebrew must have a different word for "swimming mammals" than it has for "swimming fish". BUT WHY IS THIS PRESUMED? Is this another example of the often-criticized myopia of Americans in that their lack of experience with other cultures leads them to believe that English language distinctions must be imposed on other languages -- even ancient ones? Or is it simply ignorance of the translation process? WHY And if I get similar "answers" to those I received in another online forum, I will expect to hear from those who CONTINUE to think that modern taxonomy of biological classes must be imposed universally, despite my pointing out the "logic" of this._----------------------------------------------------- EDDYj: "Winged creature" is exactly what the Hebrew text of the Bible says. Of course, to most people, a "winged creature" in English is a bird -- so that is a quite reasonable translation as well. I have a question, something that has upset me. I understand the epsilon -delta definition of continuity, but it holds when the function has numeric arguments and values. Functions like f(x) = x^2 + 1, with domain and values in the reals. I can also understand this concept for functions from R^n to R^m, for example. In such cases the epsilon-delta definition makes sense, we have a norm defined on the domain and on the range space. But consider the function f, defined on the set of all human beings, given by f(x) = x's first name. For example, if x is someone called John, then f(x) = John, if y is called Mary, then f(y) = Mary. f is unquestionable a function, but I don't see how we can talk about its contininuity r discontinuity. But lets jump the gun and say that the group really does make it, and people want to establish a fan website or whatever. Let's say I register a new internet URL, www.xyz.com, and in the setup define ns1.xyz.com as the primary domain server. Next, I go to my ISP, get IP addresses 65.0.0.4 through 65.0.0.7, and put my web server on 65.0.0.4 and my DNS server on 65.0.0.7. I set it up with a zone for xyz.com, and put in an A record for www. I know for sure that if I go to another computer, change the DNS reference to point to my DNS server (65.0.0.7), the DNS engine works and responds with the correct ip address for www through an nslookup. Here's what I don't understand. Where I registered the domain name, they don't know the IP address my ISP gave me. How does my DNS tell the world what IP address it has, and is there anything special I need to do to do this, especially in any flavor of Windows Server? more
