Open Question: Do you think Microsoft would pay for a domain name they'd need in a year?

Microsoft hosts an annual conference called MIX and they have a domain name every year, for example www.mix2010.com. I assume most people use this easy-to-remember domain name to get to microsoft's MIX sub-page on their microsoft domain name and host. Assuming they get this format of a domain name every year, and Microsoft will be looking to buy www.mix2011.com next year, do you think they'll really need it? I saw it was available and to see if they'd pay for it, I set it up for auction at GoDaddy.com. I set the buy-now price as $50,000. Do you think Microsoft will pay this price next year when they're looking to buy it? Or are they going to change the standard of naming just because of me? If they wait for the domain name to expire (5th March 2011) then it'll be too late for their conference, and I don't think it'll become available right away. Or do you think they'll pay the auction price of $10,000 and wait for me to approve? Hey there, I am after a domain name and the squatters are not even making good use of it, they have had it registered for 8 years now and stats show they don't do anything with it and it makes no money whatsoever, I contacted them and said I will give you £200 for it and they are playing about. Last year, January 25, I created a website. Keep in mind, I'm not that educated with this sort of thing, and I just have been trying my best to learn as I go. I went with JustHost.com, and they were a nightmare. I tried to cancel my account, and they wouldn't let me. I'll spare you the details, but after 2 months of fighting with them, I contacted a guy who builds & maintains websites for people & businesses for a living. Even he thought it was absolutely ridiculous, the way JustHost was doing business. Anyway, I had to just cancel that particular card that JustHost was charging, so THEY would cancel ME for non-payment. That worked. Well, my website expired Jan 25th, & apparently I am under a "grace period" of some sort. I have no idea how to renew my domain name! I can't login, because my user name & password was canceled by JustHost when I canceled that card. So I'm totally at a loss as to how I can renew it. I tried calling JustHost, but after a little over an hour of being placed on hold, and having NEVER talked to a live person, I hung up...this was all too familiar from last year, anyway, I have NEVER talked to a live person at JustHost. So ...anyone have any bright ideas? more

I'm interested in a certain domain name, but it doesn't expire until May 2010. i tried calling the phone number on it's whois.net but it was a fake so I googled the email address jennifer@guesswho.com and there were thousands of results from this domain squatter. The whois page says the record was created 2001 and last updated in 2009, but it doesn't tell me if this jennifer spammer was the one who renewed it each year. If I knew for sure this person was the one renewing it for the last 8 years, then I could move on and try to find a different name. Voting Question: Is it possible to renew an expiring copyright?

My great-grandfather copyrighted a musical composition in 1934. He and his wife renewed the copyright after the 27 or 28 year period, in 1961. The copyright was also renewed in the name of their son (my grandfather). When my great-grandparents died, the copyright was therefore transferred to my grandfather. According to what I've been able to find out, the copyright will expire 95 years after the publication date-- therefore, in 2029. Is it possible for my grandfather to apply for an extension on that copyright, or will the work necessarily have to go in to the public domain in 2029? more

Resolved Question: Best strategy to buy an already registered domain name?

I really want a particular domain name. It is previously registered, but the the registration expires in November. It was a two year registration and it is not an actual site, it's parked. So I think the registrar owns it. It has a private registration but seems like these guys do that. Anyway, should I wait until the expiration date and try to buy it then or try to contact the owner? I don't want to use a broker seems like a waste of money. They also offer a "back order" option too sounds like BS. Is it likely that the registrar would just let the registration expire or would they be evil and snatch it up again? I have the exact same domain except its dot net not dot com. Thoughts?Good advice. ICANN: U.S. Moves to Lessen Its Oversight of Internet By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Washington said Wednesday that it would give other governments and the private sector a greater oversight role in an organization that oversees the Internet. The move follows criticism from European regulators and others that the American government could wield too much influence over a system used by hundreds of millions of people worldwide. Icann decisions could influence what domain names are available, what languages they are in and how much they cost. “The Internet is on a long-term arch from being 100 percent American to being 100 percent global,” said Rod Beckstrom, the former U.S. cybersecurity chief who joined Icann in July as chief executive. “This is a significant step along that arch to becoming more global.” Icann has had oversight over domain names under a series of loose agreements with the U.S. government, which financed much of the Internet’s development. My father signed up with Superpages and has a domain name and website that was designed by them. It was designed very poorly and costs him 133 dollars a month. His contract with them expires next Monday. I can create a much better page on Dreamweaver and he says that he can keep the domain name for 2 more years even if he cancels. My question is; once his contract is up, how do i take over the domain or port it to another web hosting service? Is this even possible?
