Transfer Domain Name Questions asked

Open Question: Trying to host website for a client and transfer a domain..?

Okay, maybe a webmaster with a little more experience can help me out here. I have been contracted to design a website for a client. She wants to maintain control over her domain name as she has had problems with a previous web designer going missing and her going through massive hassle to get her domain name back. 1) Can she register the domain, but I host it? 2) If so, how would this process work? She is not very web savvy, and anything too technical is out of the question. Thanks in advance. more

Voting Question: How to transfer web hosting from vistaprint?

I have a website with Vistaprint, and I'd like to transfer it to a different host so I can build my own site. I want to keep my current domain name, so just getting a new domain name isn't an option. The problem is, the whois lists vistaprint as the owner, so I can't log in to tucows to change where the DNS points to. Vistaprint's customer service absolutely sucks and has been no help at all. Am I screwed here? more

I just transferred a domain name I've had for 5 years to GODADDY.com - When I set up an email account thru them and tested it out, the emails ended up in the "Junk Mail." I tried sending it to both my Yahoo.com email and well as Hotmail. I know I can go in and change the settings, but I want to make sure my emails aren't going into the junk mail of people I reply to. How do I fix this? Thank you!I don't care about *MY* settings. I don't want my emails going to the JUNK MAIL of OTHER accounts. When I respond to someone I want to make sure they get it more

Open Question: Why does it take 5+ days for a domain name to transfer?

I've already initiated the process of moving my domain names from one company to another, but it's said that it takes about 5 to 7 days and from what I've been able to find, that's standard. But why though? It's been a few days already (started the process on Sunday). I recall reading/hearing somewhere that it's not uncommon for it to take at least 5 days. I'm just wondering why that would be, especially if I'm able to verify on both ends that I'm the owner and want to do the transfer. more

Voting Question: How can i forward my office live domain to another domain?

Hi guys, a few years ago i registered with office live and they asked me what domain i wanted etc..... i chose a .com domain name if someone enters that url they get the crappy office live basic website i did in 2 mins when i registered. I have now had a site developed and is at the same address but the .co.uk (i.e. mycompanyname.com is on office live and mycompanyname.co.uk has a good site uploaded) i currently use office live for my email me@mycompanyname.com and access it just by signing into hotmail. I have alot of emails in there that are important and need to keep so i can't transfer my.com to a new host without loosing my email account (i think) So i would like to keep my office live account as it is but need the .com url to forward to my .co.uk url Please help! So far the only thing i have found is a code to enter into the search engine optimization tab of office live that lets people see the .com for 5 seconds and then changes to the .co.uk I need it to forward instantly just like it would if you forwarded a domain with your host / registration provider. Please help@ b - the address is not important. i do not use a co.uk email address, i use the .com address that is why i would like the good website viewable when people enter the .com address. The website was designed for the .com domain but it is just impossible to upload it to an office live server. My initial question is correct.@mike - i asked HOW to do it with a domain that is registered through office live. I am aware of what i would be able to do if i was able to point the nameservers at my hosting account. i would like to know how it is done. more

Resolved Question: WHOIS data - Urgent!!?

I have just subscribe a web hosting service with free .com domain name. However, they put my real data inside. So, when ppl use WHOIS service to search for my domain, will see all of my details including name, address, hp number etc.. I ask them why, and they said I need to subscribe their Whois Protection Service which cost USD$6. I don't like to pay them any additional fees, becoz of their bad and rude service. Today when I login to my control panel, I suddenly found that actually I can change my WHOIS data directly from my control panel. So, my question is: Can I put fake data in? Is there any bad consequences? Will it causes my domain easily being transferred by unauthorised party? Please help...Thanks a lot!! more

Voting Question: Why does my newsgroup's server think I'm reporting spam?

I'm subscribed to a mailing list, php.install under news.php.net. I use Mozilla Thunderbird to view the latest postings and respond to a posting. Every time I do that, I get an e-mail from the server's abuse department. The message always opens with: "This is an automated reply to your message to Email Abuse. Your message has been delivered to our email abuse department. This department handles complaints from users that are receiving unwanted email. We try our best to investigate all reports of abuse. If we determine that the email you reported was in fact sent from an email address at one of our domains, or by way of computers operated by us, we will take the appropriate action." So it's claiming that I reported a message to abuse, and I didn't! I was just responding to a message! Resolved Question: Stolen / hijacked domain name at godaddy.com?

I purchased a domain name that I have had for years (Created on: 31-Jul-95). I have had the domain registered for years with godaddy and I keep the registration at 10 years out which is the maximum allowed by domain registration companies. In fact when the registration went down to 9 years in the past I would immediately pay for the registration to go back up to 10 years (maximum). I did this for security reason because if the domain name is at the maximum registration years it is impossible to move it outside of registrar (godaddy). On July 31, 2009 my domain name went down to 9 years registration, so the next day August 1, 2009 I paid for another year pushing the registration back to 10 years. On November 3, 2009 I typed in my website domain name and its down. So I log into my godaddy account and my domain name is not listed in my account. I contact godaddy and they inform me that someone pressed the cancel button on the domain name, so they took it and resold my domain that I had paid for 10 years out. I never pressed the cancel button don’t even know where that is and not sure why any registration would have that button on an account. Godaddy is informing that they can’t do anything for me. Even though the new godaddy registrant never purchased any years on the domain, nor was it acquired via expiration, and the domain name was never transferred to him by me. And I’m even out the money on the prepaid 10 years registration. Any suggestion or help would be appreciated by me. more

Voting Question: Is it possible to renew an expiring copyright?

My great-grandfather copyrighted a musical composition in 1934. He and his wife renewed the copyright after the 27 or 28 year period, in 1961. The copyright was also renewed in the name of their son (my grandfather). When my great-grandparents died, the copyright was therefore transferred to my grandfather. According to what I've been able to find out, the copyright will expire 95 years after the publication date-- therefore, in 2029. Is it possible for my grandfather to apply for an extension on that copyright, or will the work necessarily have to go in to the public domain in 2029? more
