Open Question: What should I put for Configure Server on my VPS Hosting?

So I have a website on a shared web hosting but the web hosting doesn't have what my scripts/website needs. but VPS hosting does. While trying to buy VPS Hosting, it says 'Configure Server' then says "Hostname:" "NS1 Prefix:" "NS2 Prefix:" and "Root Password:" I'll just generate something for the password, but I don't know what I should put for the Hostname, NS1 or NS2 Prefixes. If my domain (website name) is as-play.com, Would I put that for the hosname and just put ns1 and ns2 for the prefixes or what? This is my first time buying VPS hosting and the stupid host people are always sarcastic with their answers and no help at all..Okay so I get the NS1 and the NS2 but what about the hostname? Resolved Question: What would I do about setting up a domain name in my local network (not internet)?

I'd like to set up a domain name for a web server on my local network that is only accessible to other computers on the network and not to the internet. That is to say, I have no intention of registering with a dynamic DNS service in order to get my domain, I simply need a few computer to access it through the local domain name. I'm running WAMP Server on the computer and I'd like to set up the internal IP address (ex. 192.168.1.105) to a domain such as (mypc.internal) and access it through http. Any simple way of doing this short of modifying the HOSTS file on every computer on the network?Umm... no thanks, Dennis. more

Resolved Question: How Can we get sWindles XP Networking to Use the Hosts File?

We are plagued with browsers, (IE & Firefox) forever messing around with "Finding" or "Looking up" domain names - and usually failing to resolve the domains - so I have populated the Hosts files of each computer with the domain names of our frequently used web sites. There are times when this seems to work well, but there are also times when the browsers seem to ignore the Hosts file, and we're back to "Finding" or "Looking up" all the domain names. I can tell when the Hosts file is being used, because Hosts directs malware and other unwanted sites' domains to 0.0.0.0. If pages finally load under these conditions, it appears that the CSS formatting has gone missing, so everything is in black & white, arranged vertically, and left-justified. This occurs most frequently when a computer has just started up or has been idle for a few hours, but it doesn't occur every time. After doing several Repairs on a connection, it may begin to use the Hosts file, but not always. We frequently have to give up and restart a computer, and hope that we won't have to Repair the connection too many times afterward, to get Hosts lookup working. We used to have a problem with losing connections when switching users on a computer, but not since I added the Windows Registry entry to keep connections across sessions, so that isn't the problem. Computer #1: Toshiba Satellite; XP Media Center Edition SP3 Computer #2: Gateway 7330GZ (laptop); XP Home SP2 Computer #3: HP Pavilion; XP Pro SP1 #3 is a very early XP machine, with only 192 MB of available RAM, and #2 isn't much better, so I'm not inclined to burden them with the OS bloat of later service packs, considering that MyCrudSoft didn't bother to fix this problem in later service packs. I'm also not inclined to trade up to and learn how to cope with and work around a whole new set of malfunctions in a newer version of sWindles, with no assurance that MyCrudSoft has fixed the present malfunctions; after all, if they fixed this in Vista or 7, they should have deployed the fix in an update for XP.Andrew S: Thanks for that thought. I have considered it, since I do have a lot of domains populated. However, that doesn't seem to account for this problem occurring primarily after starting up the computer or after it has been idle. The computer should have more memory and resources available at such a time, with which to deal with that burden. I've also tried running with an empty Hosts file - or no Hosts file - and the older computers then run slower on the Internet, apparently due to loading so many graphical ads on sites like Yahoo! and Facebook. more

Voting Question: Wordpress, web hosting query. Desperately needing help...?

I signed up for a blog through Wordpress.com and had my site as example.wordpress.com. I purchased a domain name through Wordpress.com and pointed my wordpress blog/site to it. I've attempted several times to download Wordpress through the .org site and I absolutely cannot understand what to do. Resolved Question: Web Hosting - DNS Problem?

Two days ago I've changed my web hosting company. I also bought a new domain name to use with my new web hosting. I've changed the DNS settings on the domain etc. But when I try to open my new domain name I get this error: DNS error - cannot find server My domain company said its to do with my hosting company and they couldn't help me. My hosting company said there wasn't any problem with my DNS settings and everything was working fine and they told me to check my internet connection and turn my modem off and on again. So I did what they told me but I still get the same error. I tried opening my new domain using a proxy site and when I use a proxy it works fine. Can anyone help me? more

Resolved Question: I bought a domain name and am kind of lost on hosting. I would really like to find free redirection?

I have a domain name registered with Google (gdomains through godaddy). I really love having everything handled through Google. I love the email, I'm used to the platform for my DNS settings, I like their file hosting, I have advertising credit, the registration price is perfect and includes 50 usernames and 90 CNAMES. The only thing is I really really don't like the Google Sites hosting platform. I know this isn't ideal but I'm really not ready to do a full transfer to a new host. Basically I just want something that will allow me to redirect my already registered domain name to a basic webpage that I can create through the host site. I have my own layout coded and everything and had my site up on Blogger, which was pretty close to how I want it in terms of features but it wasn't giving me the freedom I wanted to add extra pages and things like that. To water it down my site is basically a "blog" but I need 5 separately archived pages so you can see how that would be a problem with something like Blogger. Especially with my CNAMES because blog sites don't allow naked URLs. I use Webs for free hosting on smaller projects but I'm not sure if I trust them with my domain, plus I can't afford a premium package right now. I don't need the extra storage space or any of the other perks of a package deal right away, I know if I start getting traffic I will need to upgrade but I already have more than enough assets through Google to get started. If anyone has any suggestions or tips or even just hosting sites they would recommend that would be really helpful.@ledfrog.com- Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I want to do, I just need to find a host that lets me do that. I think my biggest issue right now is just the fact that most of the host sites I'm finding make me pay monthly for so many things that I'm already getting through Google for only $10 a year (like a domain name, subdomains, POP/IMAP email, image hosting, etc) and I don't want to pay for all of it. I just want a place I can get my html up and start posting. more

Resolved Question: Which is best option?

Hi I am venturing into the world of marketing as an affiliate product owner (clickbank) and would like some advice please. I have considered blogging as a means to advertise my products. But, I am aware that blog.com and blogger.com etc may consider this a form of spamming. I do not have the skills to set up my own website as a blog type site. Neither can I afford, at this stage, to hire a web designer. I am considering buying a domain name, hosting space etc but need advice on what would be best for my needs? I do need the following: - A package that has some form of easy build facility so I can simply build the site myself. - A web site that has many pages for me to blog, upload pictures etc in fact has the same stuff blogger.com provides for its bloggers. - A package with no restrictions so I can blog away whilst advertising my products as and when I deem appropriate. Resolved Question: Hosting A Website - need help !?

Hello, I have been intrigued by a few sites .. and I am now looking into creating my own ! But as I am not very knowledgeable about creating and hosting my own sites ect .. I thought I'd look into it for some help :) All I am basically asking for is if you know any hosting sites that can offer me the following: - Easy to build website. - Can add forums into my site. - Good website space & web trafficking. - Can add in my own videos/pictures. - Can add admin/mod powers to certain people (fairly important) - Includes a domain name ! I am really looking for the all round specifics to create a fan and help site for a popular online game I play, so anything that could relate to this or offers features to help this would be good ! I have been through and registerd almost every FREE website creator out there - so please don't suggest any, unless they are literally worth paying for (which I doubt :p) I am on a fairly small budget, nothing too high please :) more

Resolved Question: Creating a Website for a hospital?

Today I was talking with the girlfriend of my my cousin, she works in a hospital, she told me that the hospital has contacted a professional web designing company in order in order to update the website because it's too old, she told me that the web designing company want 13k which is just a little bit expensive :) I know how to create a website, I have 1 under construction and I will build 2 in the near future, so she asked me if I can design a website, I told her yes, I can, she asked about the cost, I said that it's nothing, it's less than 1$ a month, because I can host it for free, and godaddy take about 12 $, but I thought that she want a personal website, I didn't know that she was asking me to update the website of the hospital:) So I was very polite and told her that it's free :P because I didn't want to take from her 1 $ a month :D And after a while, I understood that the website belongs to a hospital and that hospital has already registered a domain name, and I was shocked when she said that the hospital was going to pay 13 k to just update the website, I said that I'm ready to work on that website, but I need 4k to do it, because in order to create a professional website I have to pay about 500$ to get the best web package available and I want 3k to my pocket:) I said that because the girl is not going to pay anything, the hospital will pay everything:) Nothing is official yet, I don't know if the hospital is going to accept my offer, I know that building a website for a hospital is easy because this kind of websites do not required a hard work to be finished, most of the hospitals in Lebanon (I'm from Lebanon) have a homepage a support page, about us and it's all basically. But I'm afraid to do the work because when I create my website I create it to satisfy myself, not someone else, I'm afraid that they don't like my work, or something like that, I've never build a website for someone other than me, I don't know how it would feel like to do this. So what do you think, should I build the website, or let the company do the work? If you say that I should do it, how much money should I ask for? more

Voting Question: Setting up apache for website?

I have run ipconfig to find my computer assigned the generic belkin router address 192.168.x.x, and the ip address off the router (wan ip) is the same across all networked computers; I have installed Apache and want to use it to host my site; domain is registered through GoDaddy, have tried pointing the name to both ip's with no success. Loopback is fine (127.0.0.1 throws the "It works!" message), I've set up forwarding in the router to direct all traffic on port 80 to my ip. Went to network connections to open up port 80 and check that "web server" was checked. Comcast isn't blocking port 80. Have tried domain forwarding as well, to no avail. i secured the domain name www. patsmaintenance.com in 2009. thru a company named bizness web doctor. i was supposed to get the domain, internet exposure thru google, yahoo etc.and a website with hosting. i did get some of this but i did not setup a web site. i had to leave the area for several months , i was totally out of touch. i need help to find exactly what i have of www. patsmaintenance.com, where it is and what i can do to build a site and improve it and expand it! i just restarted my buisness jan. 2010, ive had only afew jobs, but i can see the flow of work picking up. i really need to get more from my internet presence, but im not very computer savvy! anyone who can help in any way,i would be very apreicative. i may be able to spend some more money on it but im unable to commit to any plans right now as i need more time to make some more money from the minor work flow i now have. i would be happy to trade my work for any work that anyone could do for me! i am licensed as class A master and have been working in the plumbing HVAC trades for the past 38 yrs. Pats maintenance has been my buisness for the past 29 yrs.! i charge very resonable and competative rates! i do alot more repairs than replacements then most cos. we do alot of same day response jobs! also im working evenings and weekends at regular hourly rates! if you can help me out in any way please call me, pat at 703 644 1524. or you can email me at ptjkmk@hotmail.com. Resolved Question: Trying to host website for a client and transfer a domain..?

Okay, maybe a webmaster with a little more experience can help me out here. I have been contracted to design a website for a client. She wants to maintain control over her domain name as she has had problems with a previous web designer going missing and her going through massive hassle to get her domain name back. 1) Can she register the domain, but I host it? 2) If so, how would this process work? She is not very web savvy, and anything too technical is out of the question. Thanks in advance. more

Voting Question: Setting up Apache web server through router?

I have run ipconfig to find my computer assigned the generic belkin router address 192.168.x.x, and the ip address off the router (wan ip) is the same across all networked computers; I have installed Apache and want to use it to host my site; domain is registered through GoDaddy, have tried pointing the name to both ip's with no success. What do I do? Thanks in advance. Thanks to all, but still no luck. Any other advice or leads would be greatly appreciated; and again thanks in advance. more

Voting Question: Yahoo store, and my domain name?

Hi, I am opening a yhoo store, but I wish to keep my domain name hosted elsewhere. Is it possible for the store to somehow utilize my domain without me having to move it over to yahoo? I like my current web host. If I could put the store in an iframe or rewrite the store's URI to be store.mydomain.com that would be OK too....but I'm not sure if any of this is possible. Any advice?? I wanted the store to only be one aspect of my domain, and NOT the whole site. more

Resolved Question: How to transfer web hosting from vistaprint?

I have a website with Vistaprint, and I'd like to transfer it to a different host so I can build my own site. I want to keep my current domain name, so just getting a new domain name isn't an option. The problem is, the whois lists vistaprint as the owner, so I can't log in to tucows to change where the DNS points to. Vistaprint's customer service absolutely sucks and has been no help at all. Am I screwed here? more
