Business Opportunity Questions asked

Open Question: Why is Ralph Lauren not reissuing the hats worn by the US at 2010 Opening Ceremony?

I emailed customer assistance at Ralph Lauren asking if they had plans to replenish the stock of those hats that US athletes wore at the 2010 Opening Ceremony. The email I received back said the following: "The interest for this hat far exceeded our expectations and is, unfortunately, no longer available on RalphLauren.com or in any retail store. In addition, we are unable to accept additional orders for this item. We apologize that we were not able to meet your expectations...If we can provide further assistance, please contact us...We look forward to providing you with the legendary service you have come to expect at RalphLauren.com." I'm sorry but wouldn't Ralph Lauren want to reissue as many of these hats as possible?! 9 out of 10 people I've talked to would love to own one of these hats...they are very patriotic and stylish! Why wouldn't Ralph Lauren pounce on redistributing these $75 hats? Is there some business logistic that I'm missing here, because having the potential to sell thousands of $75 hats sounds like an opportunity too good to miss. more

Open Question: What is your opinion here Race gap seen in restaurant hiring?

Kitchen worker Carlos Garcia envies the waiters who make more money and suffer fewer aches than those like him in the "back of the house." The very term, common in restaurants, speaks to a divide that is conspicuous yet often overlooked by diners. The division of labor plays out in Loop steakhouses and Wrigleyville sports pubs: Taking the order or seating the clients is the girl next door, most likely white, while a cadre of young Mexican men construct the meal behind the scenes. In a first-of-its-kind survey released this month, a Chicago labor advocacy group detailed the segregation of restaurants and the unequal pay and working conditions that exist between the front and back of the house. It found that nearly 80 percent of whites work in the front, nearly two-thirds of Hispanics in the back. Highlighting the issue, the Restaurant Opportunities Center of Chicago teamed with the Working Hands Legal Clinic this month to file its first federal lawsuit, against an Andersonville eatery that allegedly mistreated its kitchen staff. Meanwhile, the McCormick & Schmick's chain recently paid $1.1 million to settle a class-action suit by black employees who said they were passed over for jobs as hosts and servers. But alleged bias explains only part of the story. For restaurateurs, choosing which employees are their establishment's public face involves complex perceptions of race and class. In some cases, they also are searching for a precise skill set necessary to help a customer pair the right Pinot with the filet mignon. Sometimes, that process holds back not only minorities but white workers who don't have a model's good looks. Many immigrant busboys and dishwashers cannot realistically hope to become servers because they lack legal status or haven't mastered English. Even as Chicago Restaurant Week showcases the city's culinary ambitions, Garcia has his own dreams. Next week, he will begin a course that teaches the basics of becoming a waiter, skills such as taking an order clockwise around the table. "I would have a new path, a way to keep moving forward," said Garcia, a legal immigrant. At Pequod's Pizza, owner Keith Jackson said he hates that other Lincoln Park restaurants want servers to look like fashion models. Jackson, who wears a ponytail and tattered T-shirt under a sport jacket, says servers can sport tattoos as long as they are personable. But Jackson echoed the frustration of other restaurant owners, that young U.S.-born workers do not want the demanding jobs of dishwasher or line cook. He watched scores of applicants swarm a recent hiring fair: The prospective servers came in all ages and races; the young Spanish-speaking men on a side bench hoped to work in the kitchen. Still, Jackson tries not to fall into stereotypes, using his own scruffy exterior as an example. "You look at me and you'd think I couldn't pay my bill. I could probably buy your business 10 times over," Jackson said. "I don't want to follow all the other places who make a judgment based on how you look." http://www.chicagobreakingnews.com/2010/02/race-gap-seen-in-restaurant-hiring.html Let’s see, they leave a country and come to another because they can’t get work in their own then when they are here and working all they want to do is complain about it ? more

Open Question: There is a huge classism issue in the US/the world, so why are people pretending it doesn't exist?

I've heard the hollywood types at conventions go on about this "non-existant" class issue, but then let's get real, they really only primarily care about their own careers, and opportunities, and know who the right people are, and the ins and outs of the business, and what do they really care to hang out with some middle class joe schmoe, or lower class people. Same with any upper echelon of society in this country and overseas. Sure they STATE and act like....classism isn't there, but it is, and you can even feel it if you were to go to an upper-scale store, business establishment, restaurant, etc, and you weren't of that class, or business. Neighborhoods have their own social codes, expectations,...some neighborhoods, just to stay alive applies, whereas others, it's what college you went to, what your GPA is/was, what you DO, the stakes get higher, and make no mistake about it, those two neigborhoods/people are NOT the bestest of friends, and there is discrimination. So then why are people pretending this isn't here, and like we're all buddy buddy? The celebrities in the movies, in the industry and when you meet/greet them at conventions are NOT there to be buddies with you and there is no real equality....it's business, and this world is basically like that. I think it's just because we have it more lax in the US, people pretend it doesn't exist, when it does, just...not very visible. It's harder to distinguish. But it's obvious too. Would angelina jolie/brad pitt just go down to fuddruckers for their night out, or would people from the ghetto (if they could even afford it), go to a high scale 5th ave restaurant, and NOT get treated strangely? What if you're poor and shop at a high scale store, etc? it's ALL right there. more

Open Question: Is this a good story outline?

Hey! Is this a good story outline for a novel called "Human Hunting"? Does it seem entertaining? Human Hunting opens with Matthew, Jennifer, and Daniel Rosado living as outlaws from the government. They are criminals for not giving up their child to the Recyclers in a world where it is illegal to keep your child more than four years. Every child gets a mind wipe and is put in storage in a building called the Supercenter until they get adopted again. After a trip to McDonald’s, the Rosado family is found and attacked. Daniel is shot and killed, Matthew is taken to the Supercenter, and Jennifer is taken into custody. Jennifer is interrogated on and off for the next month, and after lying to authorities again and again, she is released. Her plan is to find Matthew, whatever it takes, and move out of the country. She is put in a horrific apartment and given a job as a nurse in the Recycling business, where she finds Gnar, a fortune-teller who hasn’t seen the light of day, and Grace, a preppy 49 year old who is in between children. Within a few days, Grace and Jennifer are friends, although Jennifer only enters the relationship for the opportunity of finding Matthew through Grace’s husband, the Vice President of Recycling. Grace has adopted Matthew coincidentally, although neither Grace nor Jennifer know they own the same child. Matthew reveals himself to be rebellious, smart, and sneaky, giving Grace the ride of her life. Jennifer breaks into buildings to find information to bring her to Matthew, and kills people profusely during her outings. She meets up with a man she once tried to kill, called Tristan, and starts to ally with him against a common enemy, a man with gray eyes who has a special distaste for Jennifer. As Jennifer gets more and more frustrated at not having Matthew and going through Christmas without him, she begins to leave hate letters at the sight of her crimes. They promise death to many if Recycling does not end, promises Jennifer fully intends to keep. Matthew attempts to learn about his biological mother but has nothing to go on since his memory has been wiped. He refuses to call Grace his mother, but does look up to her. Tristan sees that Jennifer is both hiding something and angry, and inquires to what it is. Jennifer will not answer. At a New Year’s party where Jennifer is invited to Grace’s house, she learns that her enemy (the gray-eyed man) is the husband of Grace and therefore will not help her find Matthew. That doesn’t become a problem because Jennifer then learns that Matthew has been living right under her nose the whole time. Jennifer’s first reaction is to kill Grace and the gray-eyed man (who turns out to be named Richard), but hesitates because of her friendship with Grace. She is faced with a decision: take Matthew and kill Grace, or live without Matthew and keep Grace as a friend. As the thoughts thicken, Matthew takes a liking to Jennifer, and Richard starts suspecting something. He keeps his suspicions to himself, though. Grace is delighted that Matthew like Jennifer, and remains clueless to the tension around her. Jennifer finally decides to kill Grace and take Matthew, but as she goes to commit the act, several things happen: Tristan bursts in to peacefully stop the attack, Richard protects his wife, and Grace desperately tries to stay alive. In a horrific, bloody maze-like tour around the house, Jennifer finds Matthew, Grace manages to live, Tristan’s wife gets fatally injured, and Richard gets a gun to kill Jennifer. Just as he plans to shoot Jennifer, Matthew wipes his memory using an old pair of headphones. He still remembers his past day to day activities, but has no recollection of Jennifer. Grace and Tristan both get explained what happened and agree not to turn Jennifer in. Jennifer wishes to take Matthew, but that is impossible since he legally belongs to Grace. Tristan watches his wife die, and then leaves the house to reflect on the situation. Jennifer writes one final note, which is addressed to her dead husband, explaining her situation and the horror she is faced with. She then burns it on top of his grave with Matthew, who gets to see his father’s burial place. The final scene is third person, and shows Richard wakening from his mind wipe with a bad headache. Grace convinces him he drank too much and has a hangover, and Jennifer remains safe. Do you like it? It's supposed to be a Conspiracy Thriller. Does that seem right? more

Open Question: Is it true that everyone in America hates each other?

You know back in the day it seemed like everyone in America had equal opportunities including blacks, gays, muslims, and the japanese All we had to do was work, rent an office building, and start a business. Now we're equally poor with no freedom and we all hate each other. Is it true that we're all poor we hate each other? Does this mean we're more successful or less successful as a country? more

Open Question: If supporters of capitalism believe in hard work, why do they favour the owner above the producer?

Why do they think that people who own capital & tools of production & hire people work harder simply because they had access to better opportunities? Im sure there are cases where someone worked from practically nothing to owning many businesses, but they certainly do not represent the majority. For the most part, it is the people who produce valuable goods that work the hardest. However people who work in brutal conditions doing unappealling labour are condemned for not "trying" hard enough and thats thats the reason they're in poverty. Its hard to get out of these conditions because they cant afford to invest in education to improve themselves if they hardly have enough money for foods & shelter & bills and all that. If you truly supported hard work, you wouldnt support capitalism. Capitalism is a system that rewards the best cheaters more

Open Question: Is ACORN helping or hurting illegals?

Source: http://www.redcounty.com/acorns-dubious-home-loan-racket-most-shocking ACORN's Dubious Home Loan Racket is Most Shocking By Michelle Malkin There's one thing more shocking than the illegal alien smuggling advice that an ACORN official in San Diego gave undercover journalists James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles. It's the illegal alien home loan racket that ACORN has already been operating with the full knowledge of the U.S. government. On Wednesday, O'Keefe and Giles published the fifth in a series of BigGovernment.com sting videos. ACORN official Juan Carlos Vera coached the pimp-and-prostitute-posing pair on how best to pull off a border-busting smuggling operation. It would be "better from Tijuana," he counseled on videotape. Vera then generously offered the investigative couple his Mexican "contacts" to bring 12 illegal alien girls into the country for prostitution. GOP California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger now wants an investigation. But neither the Terminator nor any other California public official raised a peep when the very same San Diego ACORN office publicly announced a partnership with Citibank to secure home loans for illegal aliens. In 2005, Citibank and ACORN Housing Corporation -- which received tens of millions of tax dollars under the Bush administration alone -- began recruiting Mexican illegal aliens for a lucrative program offering loans with below-market interest rates, down-payment assistance and no mortgage insurance requirements. Instead of the Social Security numbers required of law-abiding citizens, the program allows illegal alien applicants to supply loosely monitored tax identification numbers issued by the IRS. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that "undocumented residents" comprise a vast market representing a potential sum of "$44 billion in mortgages." Citibank enlarged its portfolio of subprime and other risky loans. ACORN enlarged its membership rolls. The program now operates in Miami; New York City; Jersey City, N.J.; Baltimore; Washington, D.C.; Chicago; Bridgeport, Conn.; and at all of ACORN Housing's 12 California offices. San Diego ACORN officials advised illegal alien recruits that their bank partners would take applicants who had little or no credit, or even "nontraditional records of credit, such as utility payments and documentation of private loan payments." The risk the banks bear is the price they pay to keep ACORN protesters and Hispanic lobbyists from the National Council of La Raza screaming about "predatory lending" off their backs. These professional grievance-mongers have turned the 1977 Community Reinvestment Act, which forced lenders to sacrifice underwriting standards for "diversity", into lucrative "business" opportunities. Or rather, politically correct blackmail. As the Consumer Rights League noted in a 2008 report on the group's successful shakedowns of financial institutions, "an agreement with Citibank, a significant ACORN donor and partner, showed that some activists become less active when deals are in place." In the wake of the sting videos, ACORN officials are making a great show of clamoring for "reform." ACORN chief executive Bertha Lewis blamed the debacles across the country on the "indefensible action of a handful of our employees." But the corruption is systemic. ACORN has long thrown rank-and-file operatives under the bus to cover for its management's indefensible conduct. And ACORN's highly touted advisory watchdogs include inherently conflicted foxes guarding the henhouse: ACORN advisory council member Henry Cisneros resigned from his post as Clinton HUD Secretary after lying to FBI agents about payments to a former mistress. ACORN advisory council member Andy Stern is president of the SEIU, the Big Labor organization plagued by embezzlement scandals and inextricably linked to ACORN's disgraced founder Wade Rathke. And ACORN advisory council member Eric Eve of Citigroup is a champion of the ACORN/Citibank illegal alien loan program that openly undermines immigration laws and integrity in banking. The truth is more sordid than any fictional scenarios caught on tape: ACORN is a corrupt enterprise. more

Resolved Question: where should I go? SDSU or UCSD? what major?

I am planning to either major in international business or global studies. Although learning what I would in global studies is of HUGE interest to me, I find that it wouldn't open many opportunities for careers as international business would (I'm not really interested in the $$ part of business mostly advertisement or management).SDSU isn't a great school but it has a major in international business and a minor in international studies, while UCSD has a major in international studies and its a way better school. Where would I be better off? Are my assumptions on career opportunities correct? Note: I would really want to to work for an international company and work to help developing countries and its people's (not live there for too much time), anything having to do with different cultures/travel would be GREAT! also i would consider jobs in promotions/advertisement/event planning/management as my second choice. more

Open Question: Would you like to correct my paper?

My mom and dad both came to America, coined as the land of opportunity for the first time. They decided to come for many reasons: to raise their standards of living, desire for a new life, religious freedom, escape from poverty, etc. Coming to America they've brought many traditions to our home and changed the way I look at life. I've learned many things in the time I've lived here. For example, Islam means "peace" and "submission." It teaches me that only one can find peace in their life by submitting to Allah (our Almighty God) in heart, soul and deed. Allah has many other names to describe His characteristics: Supreme and Eternal, Infinite and Mighty, Merciful and Compassionate, Creator and Provider, and many more. God is High and Supreme, therefore He answers our prayers and helps us. He loves the people who love Him and forgives their sins. He provides them peace, happiness, knowledge, and success. I ,and many Muslims believe that since He's all these things that He deserves our devout love and worship. In return for all the great favors and great deeds, God does not want or need anything from us, for He is needless and independent. Some basic beliefs that I grew up follow in six categories, also known as the "Articles of Faith": - Faith in the unity of God - Faith in angels - Faith in prophets - Faith in books of revelation - Faith in an afterlife - Faith in destiny/divine decree There are also five formal acts of worship which help strengthen a Muslim's faith and obedience. They are often called the "Five Pillars of Islam:" - Testimony of faith (Kalima) - Prayer (Salat) - Almsgiving (Zakat) - Fasting (Sawm) - Pilgrimage (Hajj) Daily life of a Muslim includes events such as: * Morals and manners * Business ethics * Modesty in dress and behavior * Dietary rules * Marriage * Care of children and elderly * Racism and prejudice * Relations with non-Muslims While Islam is seen as a radical or extreme religion, it's not true. Worshipping God does not mean we spend our entire lives in constant seclusion and absolute meditation. To worship God is to live life according to His commands, not to run away from it. To worship God is to know Him, to love Him, to obey His commands, to enforce His laws in every aspect of life, to serve His cause by doing right and shunning evil and to be just to Him, to ourselves and to our fellow human beings. more

Open Question: Scholarship Essay... what do you think?

Democratic Club Scholarship One who is democratic leads by example, serves others, and participates in activities that will be an asset to society. As I prepare to graduate in a few short months, I believe that my high school career has been overwhelmed with democratic acts. Throughout the last four years of my life, my parents would always get on my case for staying up too late at night. However I wasn’t watching TV, playing video games, or browsing facebook; I was doing what I was passionate about: working hard at what I love to do. I have had the opportunity to work with great individuals on dynamic projects throughout high school. I have led teams, started events, and directed committees, all of which have benefited the high school in one way or another. My goal from the start has not been to “beef up” my resume, but instead to create a positive school climate while raising money for charitable organizations. The students of our school are blessed to have a plentiful selection of scholarship options, as even in economic turmoil, individuals of this town continue to value the education of the future. In an extension of my resume, I created an event where two rival high schools broke down their barriers for one evening and raised thousands of dollars for the Madonna House and Project Graduation. I led a group of about a dozen students through the rollercoaster ride of planning and organizing. In the end it was worth it, as the gymnasium was packed with students and the event was displayed on the front page of multiple newspapers. In addition, I am the co-president of Students Against Destructive Decisions, my class’ representative for the Accreditation for Growth committee, the liaison to a teen wellness/suicide prevention committee, a manager of a restaurant, and an active executive board member of the Wall Business and Finance Academy, DECA, and the Class of 2010. more

Open Question: Why re-fund a project that has drawn several tenders and the work has not been completed to standards?

http://colombotoday.com/english/articles/Lite/New-NIC-be-troduced--2010/9780.htm My understanding is that tranche funds were utilized to build offices that were then privatized - I have funded this project and gone through the process of choosing a modern up-to-date form of Identification but because of past commission agreements/favoritism and nepotism these funds have been absconded, This leaves one to beg the question why do it again? Sri Lanka cannot seem to handle even a vital national security element such as a NIC and feels the need to send work to the very same sources that continually muddle the programme. Subsequently another dismal failure of this administration should and will not be funded and we will return to a third party source and not keep returning to the same source relocated once again to a different continent that does the same dis-service along with the same local partners within the purview of the same government. NO THANKS! Champika has several years to deal with the prawn cultivation programme and has not brought results. The prawn business is a profitable entity and provides a valuable source of revenues as well as opportunity for SMEs to gain exchange funds. He was told several times that covering the prawn tanks and utilizing special lighting would remove the need for uneducated prawn industry employees to have to practice such cruel standards. The re-piping of the areas are also on the books for 2010 as the issue of "water transportation devices" as somebody so cunningly referred to them as is also a project that had been funded more than 2 years ago where the monies disappeared. http://www.dailymirror.lk/print/index.php/news/provincial-news/4739.html Champika also knows that there were specific lands that were allocated for migrating Maldivians and they are not in the Berawula/Wellawate area. With the rate of deforestation in Sri Lanka there is no need to continue with nature trek paths that further erode the areas as these have just been excuses to continue logging at places such as Rajagiriya. This is also unnecessarry as we do have other sources for timbers that were developed through the good neighbourly deeds that were conducted to help IDPs in other countries.http://www.news.lk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=13892&Itemid=44 What is the use of an assets and liability declaration if they can neither be examined or investigated by the EC or the general public prior to an election?my understanding is that a historically valuable building had been sold to Netherlands for 177M rupees and neither the purpose of the building nor the true value of exchanges that went to create this "museum" have been accounted for.http://www.colombopage.com/archive_10/Feb1267289368CH.htmlMore than the list of these corrupt canards what is most in need is the continued disappearances and white van abductions, the wherabouts of opposition supporting media, queries regarding blackouts of information to events such as the body found floating a few days back near the Ministry of Environment and the continued illegal detention of democratic and peacefull supporters of Frm. Open Question: feeling pressure from a temp agency?

I started working recently with a temp agency. It's supposed to be a temp to permanent position in an office job. The job itself is okay but its just not really in the industry that I wanted to go in and I knew this from the very beginning. I took the job anyway because I really needed the income and plus, I figured that it would be a great opportunity for me to gain experience because I just graduated college not too long ago and I need experience in my major which is in business. My problem is, I'm feeling a little pressure from the staffing director who gave me this job, to go permanent. I don't really know what she means by 'permanent'. Resolved Question: I don't feel bad about offending someone, but should I?

I need some repairs to my roof soffitt, and the house across the street had a sign in the yard from a company that was apparently working on their roof. It's a rental house and they're in the process of fixing it to re-rent since those obnoxious people moved out. I called the number on the sign and left a message giving my address and asking if, since they are working in the neighborhood, they would mind looking at my house and providing me with an estimate. I left my number for them to call me if they wanted to make an appointment rather than just walk over there. I never heard back from them. My personal policy is not to make a second call for such things. Companies that want the business will return the call, and I just move on to someone else after a couple of days. Well, the sign has been gone for a few days now, and last evening when I arrived home there were some people out in the yard and garage. I waved and asked, "What was your experience like with the roofer?" The guy just asked, "Why?" I replied, "I called and left them a message about getting an estimate for some work on my soffitt. I never heard back and I usually see that as them being unreliable. I was just curious." To my surprise the guy said, "Well, that's my company. I can have someone look at it." What could I say? He didn't act offended--maybe he didn't hear what I just said. Nevertheless I responded, "No thank you. Like i said, I was just curious." I waved and slipped back to my house, my opinion about not following up on leads unchanged. Should I have felt bad, though? Should I have given them the opportunity to bid for the work? I still haven't found anyone (it's not urgent). more

Resolved Question: First time cupcake business... need help to make a good start?

My wife has recently started her home based cupcake business and is participating in an exhibition.....the organisers say that based on last year’s data they are expecting approx 2000 to 3000 people. She is planning to make 900 cupcakes for this event. The sales of the cakes would break even here costs only just and giver her little profit. It is important to mention here that she is the only person who would make cupcakes and frosting and will do the decoration as well....although she has two other family members who will be assisting her including me. Is it reasonable here to expect that out of 2000 people at least 900 will buy her cupcakes? Does anyone know how early she can freeze cupcakes and buttercream frosting in order to save time? After defrosting what is the expected life of a cupcake? She does feel that this is a great opportunity for her business to really take off and the vibes she is getting from her heart are 'do or die but at the same time she is a little scared as well. If it goes well, I plan to quit my job and give my full time support to her in the business. Any advice would be much appreciated. She is rather nervous more

Open Question: A question about Make A Wish and Big Bang...?

Is a kpop band that I love immensely (and surprising as it is, I don't have a favorite in the group they're all so different! Dae is so mature and his smile is gorgeous, SeungRi is simply sexy, GD is mischievous and cute, and TOP also has the cutest demeanor...) But I have a question. A few years ago I was diagnosed with cancer and came out of it (thankfully!!) alive. Something that I am further thankful for is the program Make a Wish - and my Wish would be to meet Big Bang. However, I DO live in the United States and I ask you, from your interpretations of personality/level of business, do you think that they would do that? Travel to the US (or I go to Korea) in order to spend one day simply relaxing and having fun? I've read that they are busy and feel that this would be a good excuse for them, if nothing else. I just wonder if they'd agree to it, you know? I'm just one fan. And would they even agree to something more than five minutes of autograph exchanging? I don't want this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to go to waste....I understand the only way to know for sure is to contact both Make a Wish and Big Bang (somehow) but....I'd like to decide if this is worth it or not? I kind of want to be more than a simple autograph. I think you can understand :) But I"m not sure it's worth it for them. Your thoughts...? more

Open Question: Economics Accounting and Economic profit help please!?

If you can help me with this I would greatly appreciate it! I am TERRIBLE at economics and its frustrating me so much. I spent like over an hour trying to figure it out. PROBLEM: You own a business that produces plastic milk containers. In 2008 you produced 20,000,000 of the 1 gallon containers that sold for $.025 each. You also sold 5,000,000 of the quart containers for $.015 each. Your labor costs were $200,000. Your utility costs were $28,000. Raw material costs were $126,000. Insurance and office supplies were $49,000. According to your accountant, depreciation for the year was $69,000. You have been getting a little tired of dealing with the aggravations of running your own business such as unruly, ungrateful and inconsiderate employees and customers who are slow to pay so you investigated your alternatives and found that the person who taught you Economics years ago is willing to rent your business facility for $40,000/yr. but the only job opportunity you can find is working for that same person in a janitorial position ( cleaning the building you would rent him) for $18,000/yr. Open Question: Can background check information be expunged or removed?

Is it possible to have Nolle Prossed charges removed from a background check? I was originally charged with 2 felonies and one misdemeanor last year. During the court process, the unwarranted felonies were dropped by the DA and I pleaded guilty to the misdemeanor and received a probation and community service sentence. I was recently offered an excellent job opportunity pending a pre-employment background check and drug screen. On the background check form, the question was asked if I had ever been convicted of a crime. I answered honestly about my misdemeanor(which I had advised the HR rep of before the check) and date of sentence. I also did not have any convictions at the time of my original application. The company came back after receiving the background check information with all the charges and rescinded the offer of employment stating that I had not revealed the felony information. I had no clue that the other felonies were a part of the background information since I was never convicted. I had provided them the court information that I was only convicted of the misdemeanor and the felonies were dropped, however they said it would not be a good business decision to hire me at that point. They did however tell me that if I only had the misdemeanor on the background check, there would have been no problem in the hiring process. So does anyone have any thoughts? help? opinions? answers? Please help! more

Voting Question: Question About College for a 40-Year-Old Female...?

Bear with me, this is a bit lengthy. I am female, nearly 40 with family, especially 76 year old father coaxing me to pursue a college degree to land "secure employment" with benefits. Let me shed a little light with regards to my particular situation. I reluctantly graduated high school in '88 *wishing I'd repeated that year citing personal reasons* and, with the persistence of both my parents, began that fall in community college, randomly choosing a major to 1) get my parents off of my back and 2) declare a major just for the sake of declaring a major. My grandfather put away money since the time I was a baby in the stock market for my college, but I used it to fulfill transportation, living expenses and a trade school instead *I had always wanted to be a barber -- since the age of five* This, not surprisingly, was an unacceptable aspiration and, several years later, continued to be coaxed to finish a four-year-degree. This time, not only by my grandfather, but also my father and my younger brother and his wife. To make an insanely long story short, I spent those 20+ years traveling, barbering *for 15 years total*, working in various administrative positions in various industries and had a blast, along the way, doing so. There's one drawback: I have an extremely tiny retirement *my fault*, no benefits other than health insurance through my ex *not that I consider THAT a benefit -- more so a necessity* and some of the best income produced of any field I worked in in the barbering industry, $6000/mo, to be exact. Not too shabby. Still, the barber *out of work, currently* that I am, and the part-time entrepreneur *in another field* that I've become, my family still hounds me about that four-year college degree. Now, I am no dummy. I can do math *citing reasons to be diswayed by bloated interest rates for student loans* and I know my personality. The biggest problem with regards to attending college or, shall I say, the biggest problemS with regards to attending college right now *for my personal situation* are the following: -- I cannot sit still through classes, much less sit still through four full years, more if I need to go part time. -- There's not one major in college that I care to pursue. Not ONE. -- Not that I have anything against them, nor do I realize that all fall within this category, but I don't want a white collar position. No offense to white collar workers. My whole family is white collar. I am the only one who isn't. -- I can do math. I am not stupid. I know what I would need to repay for student loans after private, public or community colleges. I shudder with the thought of even having a debt of $5000. I don't have credit card debt. I don't own a credit card *my wisdom*. I have marginal medical debt *thank you, knee surgeries and asthma issues!*, but that only totals an amount in the ball park of $2000 -- manageable, comparitively speaking. I don't wish to repay loans once I hit the age when I begin drawing social security. I don't qualify for a grant -- still *legally* married, and I don't qualify for academic scholarships, grades aren't good enough, thanks to my high course withdrawal rate and F's for failing to withdraw courses once I unofficially dropped them back in the late 80's. -- I want to own a business when the opportunity arises and don't see it as a possibility by taking out student loans. There's no such thing as good debt/bad debt. It's ALL debt and I'd rather be debt free once the time permits to apply for a small business loan. So, there you have it. My life in a fairly sizeable nutshell. Question is this: How do I effectively explain to my family, once and for all, that I am NOT college-bound and that I have other, more important, more attractive aspirations? Appreciated are the intelligent and inobtuse replies. Thanks. more

I am currently approved for and receiving unemployment benefits in Iowa, and I don't know how it works in all states, but in Iowa, we can receive an extra couple of months or so of benefits if we were laid-off due to a permanent business closing. When I filed, I told them that the business had permanently closed, but when I received my form showing benefits, it says "Business Closing: No" so I feel like I may be getting screwed on this. I went in and spoke to the unemployment office and told them that my office (along with the other 5 offices we had in Iowa) were permanantly closed. Our client lists were purchased from another company but we were not offered jobs (just the opportunity to apply) by the new company who purchased the clients' accounts. So what is the definition of Business Permanantly Closed? I need to know because I feel like I'm getting jipped out of what is mine legally. more

Open Question: What do you think about Walmart?

Do you think it's a great store with great job opportunities? Or do you think it's an evil monopoly slowing killing off small businesses and screwing over employees? People have a lot of theories about Walmart. I'm not too sure about it though. They're sometimes cheaper than anywhere else but i don't think a corporation should be that big. They're one of the few corporations that are not being greatly affected by the recession even though they've closed some stores. more
