Open Question: I fired my web designer but she wants paid for renewing my domain name early. What's your opinion?

I found out a while back my web designer had my domain name registered under her name. From everything I've heard that is unethical. Also, I was always very confused about her billing and kept asking why I was being charged so much more than expected. She actually responded by telling me off in email. At one point she mentioned being "stuck" with her. I've wanted out of this relationship for years. At the end of February she informed me my domain name was scheduled to renew March 3rd. I wrote back that I "needed to ask her some questions and would contact her soon". On the renewal due date, I decided not to renew and informed her such, and that I didn't want her to continue hosting for me. I stated I would send her my final hosting payment. She wrote back instructing me to add another $20 for the domain renewal since she "had already done that on my behalf". So basically she renewed it early without my permission. I asked if it was in my name, and she said she would transfer it for me if I have another designer in the future. I replied that I would pay for the domain renewal if there weren't going to be additional "transfer fees", and I wanted to finalize our business now. She replied that she would transfer it AFTER I paid. I asked a second time if she planned any fees for transferring, and how long a transfer would take. She hasn't responded. I feel like these are reasonable questions that deserve an answer? Should I go ahead and pay her for renewing early and trust her to transfer it, or just go with a new domain name and forget it? more

Someone didn't like my answers, so now my account is history. No big deal right? Who needs Yahoo Answers anyway? Except my entire Yahoo account is now wiped off the face of the earth. Okay here is the deal. I was on a forum the other day and I have a PayPal account with just over eleven dollars in it but it is limited to sending $0.00 so it is almost useless unless you have a credit card. It was of no use to me so I put it up saying I would give it to someone if they renewed my a domain name (.NET). Someone came up and said they would do it. I gave them my account name and password and they renewed it all fine and I gave them the account. However now I find out they used a STOLEN credit card to buy that domain. The owner of the website told me I was reported to my local police dept. Whether he did that or not I do not know. I am 15 can I be held liable because the account information was mine at the time of renewal with a stolen credit card? more

Hi there! On friday (17th April) I got fed up with Mr Site with whom I still had another 111 days before renewal time left, and decided to transfer my domain name to 123Reg.co.uk I did this and decided that I would also like 123Reg.co.uk to host the site. Grand....so I signed up for that too. I am designing my website on iweb09 and publishing it via FTP to the hosting site (it has checked the connection and my files are all uploading fine) but when I go to check my site it says page cannot be displayed, or if I actually type in the address it takes me to my old Mr Site version (Which is looking cr*p). The site address is www.moojidesign.co.uk I have also gone onto my control panel at 123 Reg and pointed the domain at the host. Is this all I need to do and I just need to be more patient? Or have I messed up big style!!?? If someone clever out there could let me know that'd be grand! I am working on a Mac using Cyberduck as my FTP. Hi. I just got a notice from Yahoo on renewal my domain names. THey are increasing the renewal fee from 9.95 to a whopping 34.95. So I want to cancel with them and move them to another domain registrar like Godady or something. My question is, do i just let my domain names expire and then register them with Godady? I want to bid on a domain name that whose auction is ending in a day or so. It is not a high priced domain, or one that is particularly desirable, so this isn't a question about how I should try to win the auction, but I am a bit confused about the process, specifically how much you end up paying in terms of membership fees just to bid, a renewal fee that you seem to have to pay GoDaddy as soon as you win (if you win), and what effect the fact that it is an entended auction has. Hi, the domain name I want has gone. I think... https://www.buydomains.com have bought it and are reselling the name I want. When you buy a domain from a company like this, I think it's really expensive - and wondered if there is just a one off fee, or if the renewal will be expensive too? I've already posted this once. I'm not talking about buying an ordinary domain name that is available from e.g namesco, but one that has been snapped up and resold, selling at the above site. I hope I am making some sense! Yahoo is losing my business fast after blindsiding me with a "new" renewal charge of $34.99 up from $9.99 for each domain name every year. I wasn't even contacted about this change. Great way to loose a loyal customer of over ten years! Thanks for any answers to my question. more

They sent me an email a saying: " Important note: Beginning on July 1, 2008, Yahoo!'s annual domain renewal price increases to $34.95 per year." How can they go from $9.95 to $34.95 a year for a domain name? Looks like they won't be getting my business. I also like how they are trying to cheat their customers by adding... "(Please note that the billing center will not reflect the new $34.95 domain-renewal price until July 1. Until that time, you will continue to see the old renewal price next to your plan.)" There is a domain name that I would like, but it is currently active and comes up for renewal soon. I am not sure whether the people concerned will want to renew it or not, but aside from contacting them, is there any way I can increase my chances of obtaining the domain name before it gets snapped up by someone else? Say I regsiter for one year, when renewal time comes up (say November 2009), am I guaranteed to be offered the oppurtunity to renew at a (predetermined) price ? Or is it possible that a) someone else could register it for the period after November 2009, so when my renewal time comes up they coudl hold me to ransomsaying "if you want to keep using this domain name you must pay me $1,000" b) the domain regsitrar could see my website doing well and charge me an increased fee ?Thanks. I've just been looking for domain names that are appropriate for my work. My ideal .co.uk domain is taken, however when I checked the WHOIS register, it was registered on 28/02/02, last updated on 15/11/07 but the Registration Status is now at 'Renewal Required' as re-registration was due on 29/02/08. I've been watching and waiting for this one domain to expire called "religionsucks.com" but I think its annual renewal is on auto-pilot and the owner doesn't even seem to know it. I'm looking for ideas for a similar name. The main concept of the site is to distinguish between true biblical christianity and religion. The secondary concept is to inform the reader that no religion gets people closer to God and that there is no one true "religion" (meaning people need Jesus Christ, not religion). I'm hoping the site's name will be similar to "religionsucks.com" and will have a shock value that compels people to check it out. Hello! I'd be grateful for advice... I purchased a domain name with bravenet.com I also have free hosting with bravenet. I would now like to build a personal website. However, I do not like bravenet's templates or website builder. Could someone tell me: * What is free hosting and what does this provide? Voting Question: Where can I conduct legal research on domain names and intellectual property?

I have a situation where a client has decided they don't want to pay their bills. I'm the legal registrant/owner of their four domain names, and they're coming up for renewal. I'm looking for some place that I can do some legal research, to find out if it's legal for me to renew the domain names myself, then lock them down until the bill is paid. Likely, the client will file a lawsuit against me for that, and since don't have the money to afford a lawyer, I need to conduct the legal research myself to assess the risk before I do anything. Can anyone point me in the right direction to conduct research? (I've already checked with ICANN and my registrar, both told me, "go see a lawyer" - which I have no money for). more
