Hi, I recently considered getting a reseller server from a company, reselling domains etc in order to turn a profit. Most people I've seen doing this are web designers and offer it as package deal. If i'm not a webdesigner, Would it still be a good idea for me to get a reseller service, using the reseller hosting service from host gator?I have previous web hosting experience, just not any in web design, though I do know HTML. Resolved Question: Stolen / hijacked domain name at godaddy.com?

I purchased a domain name that I have had for years (Created on: 31-Jul-95). I have had the domain registered for years with godaddy and I keep the registration at 10 years out which is the maximum allowed by domain registration companies. In fact when the registration went down to 9 years in the past I would immediately pay for the registration to go back up to 10 years (maximum). I did this for security reason because if the domain name is at the maximum registration years it is impossible to move it outside of registrar (godaddy). On July 31, 2009 my domain name went down to 9 years registration, so the next day August 1, 2009 I paid for another year pushing the registration back to 10 years. On November 3, 2009 I typed in my website domain name and its down. So I log into my godaddy account and my domain name is not listed in my account. I contact godaddy and they inform me that someone pressed the cancel button on the domain name, so they took it and resold my domain that I had paid for 10 years out. I never pressed the cancel button don’t even know where that is and not sure why any registration would have that button on an account. Godaddy is informing that they can’t do anything for me. Even though the new godaddy registrant never purchased any years on the domain, nor was it acquired via expiration, and the domain name was never transferred to him by me. And I’m even out the money on the prepaid 10 years registration. Any suggestion or help would be appreciated by me. more

I recently purchased a hosting account with cpanel resell. I purchased a domain name from godaddy.com to set this hosting account up on. I have already updated the DNS on the domain name but get an error message: Forbidden You don't have permission to access / on this server. Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request. Is there additional steps I need to take besides updating the DNS? more

I want to start an on-line business. I have been told that if I buy and register a .com domain name I will be the "owner" of the domain name (if the name is unique and available of course). A friend told me that all companies from which I can buy the domain name do not actually give the buyer total ownership of the .com domain and so, if I am not happy with the hosting service or costs I cannot change my .com domain to a different hosting server or company. Are there any restrictions to really own a .com domain name? I would like to buy a domain name and really own it so I could change hosting provider at will, or resell it or rent it. Is that possible? I have been wanting to make collages of the 1950's and sell at the local market. I am confused though as to how the copyright law works. So I can't buy a postcard and put it in my collage because of copyright laws, but don't people resell objects and photos of famous people they buy all the time. I found there is a Public Domain and people willing to sell books on how to find and use it for a 100$, but no info on internet how I can use it for myself. Resolved Question: I own a domain name that was mentioned on a popular TV show - how much is it worth?

I own the domain name that was mentioned in a recent episode of a popular, prime-time comedy on a broadcast network. Basically, the network screwed up and didn't purchase it. (The URL was mentioned in a press release before the show aired -- I let them use it for the show so they could build content around it.) Long story short the guy who was supposed to purchase the URL didn't and called and told me he screwed up and asked for mercy. I felt compassion for the guy and agreed to undersell it. We agreed to a few small things (like refund of my price, the first few seasons on DVD, a nice bottle of scotch) as part of the negotiation. However, one of the big things I asked for was for a poster of my comedy troupe to hang in the background of scene. He said this could happen but that was 7 weeks ago and I haven't heard from him since, even after multiple attempts to get a hold of him. So, since he has dropped the ball, I'm reselling the URL. But I don't know what it is worth -- does anyone have an idea? There was no contract in place -- I offered but he didn't want one. The site still gets over a thousand visits a day and the episode aired weeks ago. Is there any precedent for this kind of sale? What can I expect? more

I know the vast majority of the top level domains are now taken a long time ago...Though what would happen if I use a dictionary search( I can even build my own PHP script tp check for best domains, like two words containing the word "internet" against an english dictionary). I am sure there is still hope in similar situations. Also, what if I buy like 100 .com domains containing top words and at the same time being short, without dashes, no misspelings etc. Can I make real money reselling them for at least $50 and for what period of time? I know stories about how "business.com" or "sex.com" were sold for millions. But then again I am not relying on such deals. The idea behind my plan is to buy many top domains and sell them for a pretty reasonable and low price - hence to make monthly income on sedo. Do you have experience in similar thing??? Thanks! more

I buy domain names, and then resell them to my clients at a higher rate. How do I put this in an accounting ledger? A domain I would like to purchase is taken. I was wondering if anyone knows of any site that contacts you to let you know the domain has become available? I think I've seen it before, but can't remember where, if I have.
