Voting Question: How do you set up & install all the necessary software on a server that you will need to run a website?

Can someone please explain the entire process in detail for how to go about setting up a server to someone who's a complete novice when it comes to these types of situations? My intentions are to run an eCommerce website on a Linux Ubuntu server using Magento commerce platform as my shopping cart. The hosting provider which I contacted will install the OS for me, but they won't install everything else for me which I will need to run the website. I have no prior experience actually setting up a server let alone running & maintaining a server. So I'm on a steep learning curve here. Please help! more

I am looking to start up my own online business doing Announcements, Invites, Wedding/Baby Shower Stuff, Etc.... I recently signed up with one hosting site name "Host Gator" (I sure hope it is okay to say their name). They are a fantastic site. I did a lot of research but I have found that even with my experience with computers, software, hardware, and the internet, I am finding it very very difficult to figure this site out. I am looking for a web host that could provide me with a nice looking template that is completely customizable. Hi I have a friend who has an existing website, which was built using BT hosting templates. He needs to add an online shop, that can deal with around 300 products some in several colours, what would you suggest using? The key is the design needs to be the same so a CMS that you can add Ecommerce too, rather than say Os Commerce and a E commerce type 3 column structure. I have managed to replicate the design fairly easily with WP and added the WP-Ecommerce plugins, however I have been told and read that WP isn't really the best thing to use for selling online as its limited. If you have used WP as an Ecommerce setup and it works well please let me know. So anyway, my friends isn't wonderful on computers and will need to run this after I've done the setup, so it needs to be fairly easy to run. Drupal, Joomla, Magenta ? any ideas? Thanks Ash more

Do you guys get all your talking points from Glenn Beck? All I ever hear from Conservatives is that Net Neutrality is an Unconstitutional scam by President Obama to control and censor what content we can access on the Internet. This could not be further from the Truth. The concept of Network Neutrality was developed by web content hosts long before Obama became politically relevant. This principle basically states that an Internet Service Provider should not discriminate between legal, alike web content. In other words, AT&T should not allocate more network resource to iTunes Music Store traffic than Microsoft's Zune Marketplace, Verizon should not give preferential connections to Amazon users over Barnes and Noble Users and Comcast should not redirect users attempting to access Fox News to MSNBC's website instead. Furthermore, Network Neutrality is justified by Article I, Section 8, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution, also known as the Commerce Clause: "[The Congress shall have power] To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian tribes;" Network bias can result and has in the past resulted in irregular interstate eCommerce. The Government is obligated by their Constitutional responsibilities to regulate commerce across the Internet. All this being said, why are you all still opposed to Net Neutrality?Again, the Conservatives who have chosen to answer are revealing their ignorance of the issue. Network Neutrality doesn't give the Government ownership of the Internet, nor does it give the Government control over what content is available on the Internet. Network Neutrality does not violate the 1st Amendment in any way. If anything, Network Neutrality defends the 1st Amendment by preventing ISPs from blocking content they disagree with. Network Neutrality does not "subsidize" heavy traffic users, no more so than people who go to an "All You Can Eat" buffet and have one plate "subsidize" those who eat more. Heavy traffic users pay an agreed price for what is advertised as "unlimited" access and they use it. Working as intended. Finally, Network Neutrality would not make spamblockers illegal. The goal of Network Neutrality is to protect the rights of consumers to access legal web content of their choice in a timely manner. None of you have given a good argument against it. more

I am currently being hosted by eCorner, and they're terrible. I am not able to integrate Google Analytics into my site to have it track sales, the only thing they offer me to track is an order number, and the total price for that order, not the individual products and everything that Google is able to track. Trying to get support from eCorner is just as difficult, as soon as I ask a question, they'll give me a quick explanation, and then start to say how I need to buy eTracker, or pay for them to make changes to my site... My website is blank at the moment. I was looking for a ecommerce solution and came across Oscommerce. It is a free software and at first looked pretty simple to install. Here is the problem...my hosting tells me to "Upload your web files into the " public_html " directory" - now Oscommerce tells me to "Extract this archive into your document root" - the bad part about it is I have no idea. This is my first website and I am really trying to learn without messing everything up. Ok, I have uploaded and extracted the file to my public html like my server said. Nothing happens - just whole bunch of other files. It says to change the permissions to 755 instead of 644 which from my assumptions I take it that this makes the files executable? So, I did this. Now it says type in your domain name/install in the browser bar and it will walk you through installing. Well nothing happens when I do that just a 404 message. Someone please help me install oscommerce!!! more

I have a website on a host that is going out of business. I did a back up of the site with cpanel and saved it and it shows the extension of tar.gz. I now have a new host with cpanel and was wondering how to get my site to the new host? The site was ecommerce and had SSL ...will that be in the back up or do I need new SSL? I'm currently paying $100/mo for a dedicated server, but it's an old box, slow and too expensive. I am in the process of owning my own online retail business. I've asked on yahoo answers about 3 times and keep getting treated as if I don't have a brain. That being said, what hosting site is the most reliable and offers the most services? I want to offer multiple ways for a customer to pay, such as paypal AND credit cards (some people don't know what paypal is... so please don't try convincing me to only use paypal). I also would like my customers to log in (so that they don't have to type in their information every time they buy an item). I would love a hosting site that offers templates because I like to create, but am not good at designing a web page without guidance. If you have any advice for my online store, I'd be happy to hear it. & if you don't know of any good hosting sites, I'd like information about sites you would recommend not using. I was uploading to cs-cart, on my hosted plan, when i went to load some products on and it erased my categories and products. Not sure why this would happen. This is the 3rd time it's happened. im only uploading 500 products at a time. the plan im on is unlimited space and i get NO error message. Why is this happening? more

Not sure how to goes about! I have just sign up a hosting website. I have my own domain from blog. Am looking a ecommerce setup! After I signed up the hosting web I didn't know I need to download this and that in order to upload a website! I know nothing about php, ftp...etc. Was claim by this company that its easy to setup, but now I'm lost. I download the wordpress commerce and upload in cpanel and some other things which i seen the youtube demo of this. But still I'm totally lost on setting up a online oscommerce. I don't even know how to view the website I'm creating now. Anybody can guide me the easiest way to setup in PHP and FTP? I thought of deleting away all the uploaded file from me previously and restart again! Hoping somebody can help me out! I tried to email the company but end up have to recommend me to another company which can setup for me at a cost BUT I wish to take up the Challenge.
