Resolved Question: What is the best website building/hosting site?

I am looking to build an ecommerce site. It would be an online clothing boutique for local designers but admittedly I do not know much about building a website. I have looked at Intuit, wix, and godaddy, but I am wondering what one people seem to recommend? The site would not ahve to be anything ridiculously complicated, just professional, modern, clean, easy to update and change, not to expensive, and of course it would need to have a shopping cart/sales available. Just wanted to hear if anyone had a preference, a big probelm with any of them, or some pros and cons to each. Anything would be helpful!! more

Voting Question: Please help me with my website ideas?

I'm 13. Over the summer, I want to start an online business. I have many ideas, but ive posted the two that struck me the most. I feel these are great ideas, but I'm not sure which one to choose. My goal would be to make six or more figures a year. I know that sounds crazy since I'm only 13, but it's my goal. I would love to become financially independent. 1. My first idea is my favorite. It is a website where users can submit original songs, and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat. There would also be features where users could post info and where bands could find new band members. I would make money from selling ad space, and maybe creating a pro membership with extra features if the site becomes big enough. Some problems I ran into when I was thinking on this idea was not having enough money to create the site. I thought it could cost $100,000 to have a web design firm create the site. Then i realized my cousin has been at RIT majoring in web design and programming for 2 years. I asked him, and he said he would be happy to build the site. Althoguh he may not be a professional, this site that he builds could be a "beta" launch, and money I make from it, I would reinvest into the site. My grandparents also called me yesterday saying they would love to give me money for marketing. Idea 1 Overview Target Customer: musicians, artists, independent artists, songwriters, record producers. Revenue: ad space, pro membership Variable Costs: websit matinence, domain, hosting, marketing Type of business: online business, online company, internet business, Internet company, small business, service business, social network site, online community. 2. My second idea is quite simple. I would create a basic website with storefront capability, and sell musical instruments such as guitars, bass, drums, keyboards, dj, mixers, lighting. I would buy the products from a wholesale/dropship company. Vthey would dropship the items when I give them the order details. I would price competitively but price to make a nice profit. Target customer: musicians, bands, artists, guitarists, djs, keyboardists, record producers, drummers, bassists. Revenue: ads on site, selling products Costs: website, website matinence, domain, hosting, wholesale products, marketing Type of business: online business, retail, ecommerce. Idea 3. This would be a website where users can store photos and or data on a secure digital storage site. It would cost users 4.49 a month and they get a certain amount of storage. My cousin would program the site. I would also have great security features for customers. This is a new idea and I know I would be competing with brands such as mozy, photo bucket, etc, but I feel I can start small and build up a better brand name. Overall, I love the first idea and the third.. Which idea should I do? Which idea is more profitable? Even if you don't like either, please choose the one of the above if you had to choose. I have been going to a Business Camp at my school and I enjoy it. more

Voting Question: How do you set up & install all the necessary software on a server that you will need to run a website?

Can someone please explain the entire process in detail for how to go about setting up a server to someone who's a complete novice when it comes to these types of situations? My intentions are to run an eCommerce website on a Linux Ubuntu server using Magento commerce platform as my shopping cart. The hosting provider which I contacted will install the OS for me, but they won't install everything else for me which I will need to run the website. I have no prior experience actually setting up a server let alone running & maintaining a server. So I'm on a steep learning curve here. Please help! more

Resolved Question: Ecommerce (Online Business) Sites?

I am looking for some help from people who may a little more about this sort of stuff than I do. I am looking to start up my own online business doing Announcements, Invites, Wedding/Baby Shower Stuff, Etc.... I recently signed up with one hosting site name "Host Gator" (I sure hope it is okay to say their name). They are a fantastic site. I did a lot of research but I have found that even with my experience with computers, software, hardware, and the internet, I am finding it very very difficult to figure this site out. I guess what I'm asking is can someone suggest a site that may be easier to navigate, set up and use for someone who may not have any experience, because then I know I could figure it out? Thanks a lot in advance! more

Resolved Question: Experienced web developers/designers- Need web hosting/ecommerce sites **10 Points** for best answer?

Hi all, Could anyone recommend any reliable web hosts that also include ecommerce/webstore features. I have an existing site and am not at all pleased with my current provider for it's poor service. *** I don't mind having to build from scratch as I have lots of experience in web design, can use use html/Css, create graphics etc *** Ideally I'd also like the host to have a web building tools so not everything is 100% coded. Sites I have used before and therefore looking for others are - webs.com/freewebs.com (really BAD service) but great features if they weren't always under maintenance all the time. - Bigcartel.com (Excellent service but need to move as there max for products is 100, and I have heard you can get much cheaper packages for your money overall than just a webstore). Any input would be greatly appreciated, I live the UK and would love a UK host but will happily stick with an overseas one if they're good. Thanks in advance for your feedbck.A litte more clarity in regards to hosting and what it is I am looking for...I simply meant a host where I can maintain my site online from any place, not the types where you have to install software (more expert, than my self taught skills) If you look at webs.com tht is a good example of what I mean only I would never go with webs again as their site is always down. more

Voting Question: Who are the great website / host providers?

I am a small business owner and am having a really hard time trying to get a website up and running. I am looking for a web host that could provide me with a nice looking template that is completely customizable. I need a basic template with a page to display a portfolio and also a place to buy my art so I might need to add in some ecommerce later, but for now I might be able to use PayPal. I don't have a lot of time and would still like to design the site off of the template so I need easy tools to work with. I have a graphic design background and am used to designing in Illustrator and Photoshop so this is something that is simple to me and lets me add anything I want. Is there any web host or providers that provide low prices and great service w/ customization tools and great templates, choices and marketing tools? more

Voting Question: Will multiple domains for my ecommerce site hurt SEO?

I'm well aware that duplicate content and cloaking is bad... but... If I have an e-commerce website which sells widgets, is it bad to have several other domains that, for example, have a few articles that discuss the history of widgets and what widgets are which link back to the e-commerce site (all domains hosted on the same server/IP and by the same company). I'm wanting to separate this informative content from the-ecommerce site, yet link back to the e-commerce site where appropriate. Are the search engines going to cry about this? more

Resolved Question: Building a E commerce setup into an existing design ?

Hi I have a friend who has an existing website, which was built using BT hosting templates. He needs to add an online shop, that can deal with around 300 products some in several colours, what would you suggest using? The key is the design needs to be the same so a CMS that you can add Ecommerce too, rather than say Os Commerce and a E commerce type 3 column structure. I have managed to replicate the design fairly easily with WP and added the WP-Ecommerce plugins, however I have been told and read that WP isn't really the best thing to use for selling online as its limited. If you have used WP as an Ecommerce setup and it works well please let me know. So anyway, my friends isn't wonderful on computers and will need to run this after I've done the setup, so it needs to be fairly easy to run. Drupal, Joomla, Magenta ? any ideas? Thanks Ash more

Resolved Question: Why do so many Conservatives misunderstand the issue of Net Neutrality?

Do you guys get all your talking points from Glenn Beck? All I ever hear from Conservatives is that Net Neutrality is an Unconstitutional scam by President Obama to control and censor what content we can access on the Internet. This could not be further from the Truth. The concept of Network Neutrality was developed by web content hosts long before Obama became politically relevant. This principle basically states that an Internet Service Provider should not discriminate between legal, alike web content. In other words, AT&T should not allocate more network resource to iTunes Music Store traffic than Microsoft's Zune Marketplace, Verizon should not give preferential connections to Amazon users over Barnes and Noble Users and Comcast should not redirect users attempting to access Fox News to MSNBC's website instead. Furthermore, Network Neutrality is justified by Article I, Section 8, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution, also known as the Commerce Clause: "[The Congress shall have power] To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian tribes;" Network bias can result and has in the past resulted in irregular interstate eCommerce. The Government is obligated by their Constitutional responsibilities to regulate commerce across the Internet. All this being said, why are you all still opposed to Net Neutrality?Again, the Conservatives who have chosen to answer are revealing their ignorance of the issue. Network Neutrality doesn't give the Government ownership of the Internet, nor does it give the Government control over what content is available on the Internet. Network Neutrality does not violate the 1st Amendment in any way. If anything, Network Neutrality defends the 1st Amendment by preventing ISPs from blocking content they disagree with. Network Neutrality does not "subsidize" heavy traffic users, no more so than people who go to an "All You Can Eat" buffet and have one plate "subsidize" those who eat more. Heavy traffic users pay an agreed price for what is advertised as "unlimited" access and they use it. Working as intended. Finally, Network Neutrality would not make spamblockers illegal. The goal of Network Neutrality is to protect the rights of consumers to access legal web content of their choice in a timely manner. None of you have given a good argument against it. more

Resolved Question: What do you think of my ecommerce website?

http://www.doublehappinessrecords.co.uk/ It's very basic... Hopefully all the basic information is there though. I'm not very skilled on web design to be honest. For the technically minded I am using FrontPage 2002. I am still trying to work out how to get images into OSCommerce from an external host so there are no product images yet... NB No offers of paid assistance or links to your web design company please, thank you!I won't be paying anyone else to work on the site, I don't have the budget, can't justify the expense, I am 100% independent in my business dealings and intend to stay that way. It's no good for me to spend 2 years getting an ecommerce business going and then turn responsibilty over to someone else - not an option! more

Resolved Question: Wondering which eCommerce host best integrates with the Google set of tools (adwords/analytics)?

I am currently being hosted by eCorner, and they're terrible. I am not able to integrate Google Analytics into my site to have it track sales, the only thing they offer me to track is an order number, and the total price for that order, not the individual products and everything that Google is able to track. Trying to get support from eCorner is just as difficult, as soon as I ask a question, they'll give me a quick explanation, and then start to say how I need to buy eTracker, or pay for them to make changes to my site... Just wondering what eCommerce host's people are using who are successfully able to integrate Google Analytics completely, or close to. Thanks more

Resolved Question: How to install Oscommerce solution onto my server/website?

My website is blank at the moment. I was looking for a ecommerce solution and came across Oscommerce. It is a free software and at first looked pretty simple to install. Here is the problem...my hosting tells me to "Upload your web files into the " public_html " directory" - now Oscommerce tells me to "Extract this archive into your document root" - the bad part about it is I have no idea. This is my first website and I am really trying to learn without messing everything up. Ok, I have uploaded and extracted the file to my public html like my server said. Nothing happens - just whole bunch of other files. It says to change the permissions to 755 instead of 644 which from my assumptions I take it that this makes the files executable? So, I did this. Now it says type in your domain name/install in the browser bar and it will walk you through installing. Well nothing happens when I do that just a 404 message. Someone please help me install oscommerce!!! more

Resolved Question: What is the best site for hosting an Ecommerce site?

I am in the process of owning my own online retail business. I've asked on yahoo answers about 3 times and keep getting treated as if I don't have a brain. That being said, what hosting site is the most reliable and offers the most services? I want to offer multiple ways for a customer to pay, such as paypal AND credit cards (some people don't know what paypal is... so please don't try convincing me to only use paypal). I also would like my customers to log in (so that they don't have to type in their information every time they buy an item). I would love a hosting site that offers templates because I like to create, but am not good at designing a web page without guidance. If you have any advice for my online store, I'd be happy to hear it. & if you don't know of any good hosting sites, I'd like information about sites you would recommend not using. (oh, and if you would like to put a link to your site, that'd be great. That way I can see an example of a template from the hosting site, and you can get some free marketing:) Thank you! more
