Open Question: Problem with connections to remote server?

I have a dedicated server through Godady. I am a ping the server with no issues, and I can SSH into the server (just goes a litte slow)...but I have issues going to the website hosted on the server...it loads, just very very very slow. From SSH I attempted to ping my PC, and it fails. Anyone have any suggestions? Why should I wake up in the morning? Why should I talk to people? Why should I bother doing anything? I don't get it. I always wondered why people seem so content with the crap that goes on. How can a man be so happy with a job in an office, where he works away and dedicates his waking life to some stupid corporate project? How can a woman be happy slaving away as a mother to ungrateful brats who will grow up and throw her into a nursing home? How can kids in school work and work at stupid crap like clubs and sports, and fill up their time with student council and studying, trying to get into colleges that will just overcharge them for their education and throw them into eternal debt, while they try their damndest to be able to buy groceries with a paycheck that could be beaten by McDonald's without a degree? I don't get it. I ponder. I wonder. There has to be something more. I feel like a rodent in a cage. Here I am, sitting at my computer, playing games. Oh, nice, a new item! Excellent! In fact, I was just playing World of Warcraft, and a guildmate just got a rare item in that game. Everyone in guild chat made a big announcement about it like they just gave birth or something. Why? It's a game. It's designed to keep you fat and happy, and to make you docile, to suck your money out of your pocket. So what if I wasn't docile? What if I didn't have all of today's newest trends, fashions, health foods, and cars to keep me fat and happy? Then what? What would I do? I don't know. Life would be just as pointless. I'd live a terribly boring life. So I wonder - on one hand, you have this incredibly stupid existence, surrounded by consumerism, materialism, fake food that is full of artifical crap and chemical crap that humans were, quite frankly, never meant to mess with - and on the other, you have this boring, harsh existence without any of that. Where is the balance? I can't seem to find it. I don't even know why I wake up in the morning. People are rot. They are organisms that are not to be trusted. They do everything for themselves, and nothing for others - nothing unless they have some sort of benefit to gain from it. The ONLY REASON you can go to the store and buy pre-packaged food products that are conveniant and tasty to you, is because some asshole decided it would be a good way to make money. They don't give two shits worth a damn about your convenience or your life. If they could make money off of selling decapitated infants to cannibals in South America, they would. And if it made more money than pleasing your fat ass, they would focus on that. So I go back to my original question. Why? Why. What is the point? Because I don't see one. I see misery, I see selfishness, I see hamsters in a huge cage, running in a wheel, oblivious to everything outside of their meaningless little world, full of NFL, NASCAR, Diet Coke, Burger King, Oscar-Meyer precooked bacon (it's easy and convenient!), Ford Explorers, Gucci, and a host of other crap that makes them think they are what they are not - but we've all been raised to think that we're all going to be big, rich hip-hop stars one day, to be featured on MTV Cribs or on some reality show. I'm looking for a place to host my application. It's not a standard "web hosting", but I have a program that I need to run 24/7 - connected to the internet of course and all the shabang. My program runs on XP64bit (not supporting server environments so far) and it needs to be on a dedicated managed server/computer which I can install any program I want (my program is actually several programs running together). I have Star Wars Battlefront II on PC, and multiplayer is a lot of fun. Lately I've been trying to host a dedicated server with 32 people on it. But I only have a 384k DSL connection, and even if only a few people are on, they have high pings and tons of lag, making them hate the server and they'll never want to come back :( . I made it dedicated so that I wouldn't have to have Battlefront II running all the time (I'm using LucasArts's Server Manager). Yet, I can still join the game whenever I want. All I'm saying here is that I play Battlefront II on the same computer that I host the server on, which, yes, I know, is not the best option I suppose... But I don't have the luxuries of a thriving steady income. So, if I want to host 32 people, what kind of internet connection should I be looking into? What kind of connection is good enough so that the server won't hog bandwidth from the other computers my family uses? 512k? 1M? 3M? 6M? What other advice do you guys have for me? And I dunno, I have a feeling that I'm currently getting ripped off by my current provider ($29.95 for 384kbps). Thanks very much! more

I am trying to find cheap as possible propably dedicated server. All im wanting is that i can use my PERL program to use "sendmail" to send emails. the minimum required send limit is 1 000 emails each day, since thats the amount i myself need. I although wouldnt mind if it would have at least 30 000 emails a day send limit, since i have one client that asks me to send 20 000 emails to his optins in a bunch and like to have them sent rightaway usually. I dont care if its hosted, dedicated or virtually dedicated, as long as its cheap. But i guess sending emails in that quantity is allowed only in dedicated ones. So far cheapest i have found is 70 USD a month, are there any cheaper ones for this purpose? more

Voting Question: Gears of War 2 has major lag issues, is Epic going to fix 'em soon?

I got back on live for the first time in three months and the first game I was dying to play was Gears of War 2; as I was a Gear Head with the first Game. One thing I was looking forward to was the new and improved online with no lag and no host advantage; two major problems that plagued the first installment. Epic preached before the games release that those issues wouldn't exist in the second installment. To my horrid surprise every 4 out of 5 games I play lag horribly and I also find out that exploitable glitches from the first game exist, and people are using them like crazy to cheat! I can't understand how such an anticipated title could be such garbage when it's predecessor had the problems in plain sight and all Epic had to do was fix those mistakes and slap a number 2 on it! Does anyone here have these issues and share my anger? Does anyone here know if they're going to implement dedicated servers or patch the game soon? I turn here for info because when I go to Epic's forums and people defend the game as if they're defending the size of their unmentionables; even though they state they're having the same problems. more

I probably organized all wrong to begin with and now I am hopelessly confused and in need of assistance to try to straighten things out. I am totally self taught and have fumbled my way around. I just got my 5th domain name from Go Daddy. My host is Pair. I have to decide what to do with this new domain...how to organize the directory, and I have never really understood the whole thing. I don't know if I want Dedicated IP Domain Hosting or Shared. So far I have four domains, all Dedicated, and I don't think that was necessary. None of them have shopping carts, or SSL certificates or anything like that. If the IP is shared, will the url act the same? For instance, say I have: www.me.com www.mysite.com www.yoursite.com www.oursite.com and now the new domain is www.example.com I don't want it to end up as www.mysite.com/example.com So, is it still okay to choose a shared IP Domain? I know, I really need better organization and I think some of these should share a domain if I only understood it. Thank you so much! I probably didn't make myself quite clear enough. I only have one hosting account with Pair. I don't require a lot of bandwidth. They will allow me to choose how I want to organize my domains. I can choose a shared IP domain and there is no additional monthly fee. Each dedicated IP domain does have a monthly fee. So far, I think I will be safe to choose to share the IP. Resolved Question: A dream i once had - entirely fantastical WARNING, LONG;?

I remember waking up in a large room, one side is open, facing the sea and night sky, there is a wooden walkway stretching around and above the building, providing access to the roof and other levels. The other half of the room is covered - the roof, walls and floors are all made of wooden planks, to the far right (the sea is to the left) there is a small area dedicated to operate as a sleeping quarters, and this is where i wake up from. Upon waking, i take into note all i just described, except for the objects in the centre of the room. In a circle there are Ten chairs. Small, wooden affairs, and in the centre an old-fashioned gas lamp hangs from the ceiling just above head-height. I walk over to the chairs, mystified by their purpose. Just before i reach the diameter of the circle, i stop, and turn. Behind me (now in front of me) stands a humanoid creature, with a skull shaped like a + sign, with eyes underneath the convergence point between the horizontal and vertical features. It's skin is reptilian, scaly, and yet i can see that there is a pink shade to it similar to that observed on more colorful lizards. The creature is also possessed of a mouth, with which it can speak. It informs me that if i open my mouth at any time during the proceedings, i will die. I understand this to mean the dream will end, as is usually the case when i wind up dead in my dreams. Next, small ships - little more than rowing boats - begin to arrive on the left/western side of the room, each of which bearing similar creatures and small retinues of guards. Each humanoid is seated, although the retinues remain upon their ships, and all the seats are filled except one - that of the host, he who threatened me to remain silent. The host is seated, and they begin to speak in a language i do not understand. Clearly, the nature of the discussion is an important one, judging from the body language of the humanoids - the fourth one anti-clockwise shows particular aggression and disapproval. I begin to lose interest in the discussion, being unable to divulge the meaning behind it, and investigate the guards waiting on the boats. Each guard is clothed in heavy armour, and armed with two-handed weapons of every variety - hammers, great swords, pole-arms, etc - and yet not a single one moves. The inkling occurs to me that, as powerful as these retinues may seem, they apparently obey their masters without question - to the point of utter obedience. Not one of them appears to notice me, apparently staring into space oblivious to what is occuring around them. At this point, i turn back to the humanoids whom are seated in the circle - the circle is possessed of a Four metre diameter, which i note with approval is ample room with which to react should one humanoid choose to attack another, and their seated postures make it difficult to attack the humanoid directly to the left or to the right. The humanoid i mentioned earlier, he who disapproved of the meeting, seems to be getting particularly riled up by what the host is saying, and i take it that perhaps the meaning is something that is of great importance to This group of Individuals, Possibly even that they are discussing their Future or their Past - If their past it would certainly explain the intensity emanating from that particular humanoid. Suddenly the host barks an exclaimation at this one, whether this is a threat or mockery i cannot be certain, but he certainly takes it badly - instantly the humanoid leaps from his seat and dives headlong towards the host, whom does something rather unexpected. Hello Everyone! I run a few websites on a Godaddy shared hosting plan. So far my sites are fine, but I know that if I start to build a lot of traffic (which I hope will happen within the next few months), that I will need a dedicated server eventually. Right now I manage everything myself (website setup and shared hosting), and have good basic computer skills. However, I have NO experience with a dedicated server at all, and don't have a clue about how they work. I have heard they are hard to set up. So my question is, does anyone have experience setting up a dedicated server? If so, would I be able to do this myself, or is it much harder to set up compared to Godaddy's shared hosting? Resolved Question: im trying to run programs on a virtual pc (xp pro) that wont work with vista 64 with no success.?

i have a windows vista x64 os hosting a fully licensed version of xp professional on the microsoft virtual pc 2007. i seem to be unable to run xp based programs that aren't compatible with vista. shouldn't i be able to run the programs as if the vista doesn't even exist on my computer? i have a separate hard drive dedicated to the xp on the virtual pc im running a toshiba Satellite with 4 gig ddr2 and 2, 200gig hard drives with vista 64 as the primary (host) OS, i have installed the windows virtual pc 2007 service pack 1, and i have windows xp pro as the virtual OS. am i mistaken that the virtual pc should act as a complete separate OS as if it was installed in a separate partition (or computer)? id simply like to keep the vista and be able to run "non vista compatible" programs on the xp in my virtual machine. if i could at least get musicmatch v10 to work, id be forever grateful i am aware that some progams can have settings changed in properties to "emulate" as if they are running in 98,xp,2000, me, etc. however in the vista x64 this doesnt work nearly as well. and since im running 4 gig ddr2 a 32 bit version of vista is out of the question. i have enabled all the drivers and hardware resources to the virtual machine, it uses the internet, graphics, and sound card without issue. im honestly stumped in response to the questions on what musicmatch can do that others cant is the very simple supertagging method and ability to add the album art that i have never come cose to finding in another program. windows media player simply has no comparison when it comes to adding album art and tagging ease. simply put musicmatch 10 has no equal i have yet to find a better program than musicmatch for audio playing and sorting more

Was wondering coz i know ps3 you can run a seperate OS i've made a choice of goin for Helios/yellow dog. Usually with my pc for example if i were to run any game and make a server i have to do some port forwarding in order for people to connect to me and stuff coz i'm behind a router. But when i play warhawk on my ps3 i make a server dedicated or non dedicated i dont need any port forwarding or DMZ. I am about to start a video sharing site and I am wondering what is the best way to go since the site has not even started yet and has no visitors. Should I go with a Virtual Host that will provide me with FFMPEG hosting for about 10 bucks a month or less and will give me unlimited bandwidth and storage. OR A VPS that will give me unlimited transfer/2MBPS and 100GB storage for 30 bucks a month. Do I really need to start out with a VPS since the site will initially not be receiving much traffic? Currently we are utilizing a shared server with Lunarpages but our website and our email seems to have an outage every month. This was also the case with our previous host. Resolved Question: Anyone know of a cheap Disk space provider to work with current VPS?

I currently have a VPS that gives me VERY little disk space (like 10 GB) and it costs $0.01/MB/mo for additional space. So I was wondering if anyone knows of a cheap place to host files. I don’t need a whole hosting package; I just want a simple apache server with ftp access so I can host files on that server, then direct people to them from my VPS. That’s it. I’ve been looking at places like hostmonster and hostgator, but they have so many extra features that I will never use, and it seems like a waits of money to pay for a service I will never use.
