Over the summer, I would like to start an online business. My goal is to eventually make six or more figures a year. I have a few ideas, but I'm not sure which idea sounds the most profitable. 1. A website where users can list, buy, sell, trade, and auction off websites and or domain names. A place whee people can buy and sell websites. I would allow people to create an account for free, and a seller could list his website or domain name for sale by paying a small fee. A other user could buy the site he/she wants with the buy now price, or be entered into the auction for the site where they compete with other people. Right now, there is only one site that does this called flippa.com. The problem is, everyone hates the high fee they charge to list a site (19 bucks). I already have a script for my site, and if I charge smaller fee, create a user interactive friendly version, and implement my marketing plans, I could easily beat flippa. Flippa is making some good money (4-5k a day). Pros: make money from selling ad space and charging small fee. Not much competition. Cons: not really any. 2. I would buy golf bags, clubs, shoes, etc. Wholesale, and dropship them to customers on my website. The problem is, I'm competeting with huge names like golf galaxy, golfers union, and thousands of sites. 3. It would be like image shack. It would be a website where users pay a fee, and then they can store, host and share images on my secure server. 4. Sell hosting plans. Start a web hosting company. There is tons of competition. Although I like all ideas, I think I'm aiming at the first idea. Do you think it could be profitable? Do you think it could make me six or more figures a year? Hello :) Okay, so my boyfriend and me are interested in signing up on an adult cam site to be performers for extra cash. I've looked around the web, and either the sites want your credit card number to bill you a monthly fee for using their service (which is understandable, it's just that we both live with our parents and don't want them seeing the bills...yes, we are over 21)....or if they don't require a credit card for sign up, they take a percentage of what you earn during your shows for using their service. I like the second option better...but what really bugs me, is that each one of these sites I have tried to sign up with requires that you give them your social security number. I'm really uncomfortable doing that...so I'm wondering if there are any adult cam sites that don't request it AND don't require a credit card to charge you that way. From what I've read, iPage, JustHost, and HostMonster are three of the best. From what I've read, though, a lot of their hype comes from their simplicity tools. I don't really need a website builder, free forums or blogs, or any of that- I know my way around enough to build my own site without any help. Pricing is another thing- if the cost of web hosting is going to be a problem, then my site is already failing at serving its purpose of making money. So what I'm really looking for is reliability, high support and few limits (I thought about goDaddy, but for their price you still have limits on space, bandwidth, databases, etc.), and easy hosting (not just a bunch of features that only make it easy if you want everything done for you).webs.com is a sitebuilder, though. I'm perfectly capable of (and would prefer to) building my own site, I want reliable web hosting and don't want to pay extra for site building. I am a web-designer. About 6 months ago, I offered to help out some friends who have an investment company and re-vamp their website for them, free of charge. (They were good friends and I was just re-vamping a little- so I just offered to help them out). Since then, the website has grown to over 4500 members (When I started there were less than 300 and grew to over 4500 in a matter of 3 months). When they built the site- they used a hosting company that had pre-made templates to use with modules (for forums etc..) Since I am a web-developer and their pre-made template was HORRIBLE, I offered to help them out and re-vamp the template they had with some CSS over-rides. Great. Now they are looking to expand even more, and are requesting that I do some more with the site. I have told them they need a new system and to get off the current pre-made hosting they have (they cant upload files to a file manager etc.. it's VERY limited what can be done). The modules they are provided are not meant to keep up with sites with as large a membership as theirs. So my question is this- I have a job, a family and I'm in school. It basically has gone from a few things here and there- to a full time web admin job.. only I'm not getting paid anything. What is the best way to approach this with the owners? I cannot keep putting in this many hours for them, it's taking away from me making money at my own business....... (1) Just walk away and tell them I cannot do it anymore (2) Ask for some compensation (and if so- what do I ask for? normal hourly rate? or just something- after-all i did offer in the beginning to just do it) (3) Continue to help them for free- and keep my mouth shutThanks so much for the great advice so far! I broke the one rule I was taught by a mentor, "Once you decide to take on web-design as a job.. NEVER do anything for free- even for friends and/or family" =) They live in different states, so an in-person sit down meeting is most likely out of the question.
