Domain Hosting Internet Name Web Questions asked

Resolved Question: How many web sites can be uploaded within a host server package?

Hi I am about to subcribe to 123-reg buying a domain name and a internet hosting service. My question may seem rather basic but I'm afaid I need clarification if possible. I intend to use my website for selling products such as e-books, CD's etc. What I am unsure about is whether I can have several/many different websites within the one package supplied by the host server? In other words I anticipate selling a variety of products but the website supporting each one would need to be different ie promoting each individual product. Also, has anyone else used 123-reg and would recommend them? more

Voting Question: Can you set up a domain name from work or home with the right equipment for free?

That was my question. I know what a url is. I also know your browser gets the ip and so on. But that is not my question. I guess that was the easiest way for me to ask it. If you have a webserver and such is there a way you could get it to find an unused url name and then register it. For example you could use a provider like webs.com for an internet site like example.com if you paid them enough money. But who hosts webs.com... Does it get to a point where their servers find an open addresss and just register it? more

Voting Question: Networking questions i cant find in my book pt. 3?

Users are having trouble connecting to Internet hosts. You suspect there is a problem with the Domain Name System (DNS) server and want to verify this. What troubleshooting step can you take to determine whether the DNS server is resolving Internet host names? Issue the Winipcfg command from a local workstation. Ping the web server to see if it is functioning. Try to connect to an Internet host using the Internet Protocol (IP) address instead of the IP host name. Use the nslookup command to test the functionality of the DNS server. It is a 100 question study guide I am making. these are 15 that I have gathered over the course that I thought would have real world applications. Resolved Question: Free Web Page Hosting?

Ok I'm looking for a FREE web hosting site. That means no hidden registration fees, no monthly fees, no fees for pictures, etc. I have Adobe Dreamweaver which operates through html/css. I'm not much up for the preset web designs on the internet, so don't give me a site that only advertises free templates. I'd preferably like it to have 500 MB space and for that not to include any ads the site feels like it should post. Preferably no ads at all, but I realize that's hard to do. Lastly, I'd like to avoid the ones that have your site name.host site.com Namely I don't want it to have the name of which host site I'm using in the domain name. more

Resolved Question: What is DNS Tunneling and how do you do it?????????

I hope this will help every one with the question of how to bypass this block or how to unblock this... or I need a proxy to view this... TCP-over-DNS tunnel software HOWTO Q: How do I get free internet where I should have none? A: Use tcp-over-dns tunnelling software. We'll show you how. How it works DNS stands for "Domain Name System". The purpose of DNS is convert a domain name, such as "analogbit.com" to an ip address, such as "208.113.168.166". The interesting thing about DNS queries is that they are usually recursive queries. This means that if a server doesn't know the answer for a domain name, it is allowed to ask other servers for the answer. So while a firewall or restrictive ISP may filter regular internet traffic they probably overlooked DNS traffic. tcp-over-dns diagramtcp-over-dns diagram Hexdump of tcp-over-dns packetHexdump of tcp-over-dns packet The tcp-over-dns client will encode data in an address and sends that out to the ISP's dns server. The ISP's dns server then realizes it cannot answer the question, so it forwards it onto the tcp-over-dns server. The tcp-over-dns server decodes the client's data from the address and encodes the server's data in the answer that is sent back to the client. There are many things working against the efficiency of the tunnel. There are certain restrictions about what characters may be in a domain name (a-z, A-Z, 0-9, hyphen) so data is converted into the appropriate character set before transmission. The server's answer to a query also has many restricted characters, so it too must do the same thing with a different set of characters. Every query that is answered by the DNS server must also include the question in the response. The combination of these restrictions means the total data transmitted is not very efficient compared to the number of bytes actually sent. Requirements 1. An internet connection that has been intentionally crippled by the connection's administator. A candidate connection will filter normal internet traffic, but it will allow DNS queries through. You can tell if it will work if when you ping a server you can get its IP address but all ping/tcp/udp packets are lost. 2. Server under your control where you are the root or administrator user. You need to be able to set up a server to listen on the DNS port (port 53). This can be a machine you are running at home, most (all?) ISPs do not filter dns traffic. 3. A domain name that you can use to direct queries to your server. 4. tcp-over-dns server and client software, as well as a functional Java Runtime Environment. It's free! Step 1 - Set up the domain First you need to point the domain to the location of your server. If you want to squeeze out a few more bytes per query, try to keep the domain name as short as possible. Ultimately we need two DNS records. One that says that there is a name server for *.dnstunnel.domain.com. The next record says where you can find the ip address of the aforementioned nameserver. Method 1: If you have direct access to the the DNS record you can add something like this to the bottom of it: ;set up the DNS tunnel $ORIGIN dnstunnel.analogbit.com. @ IN NS ns.analogbit.com. ns IN A <server ip> Method 2: Okay, maybe I'm a cheapskate, I don't actually own a server where I can edit the DNS record directly. However I am in luck. Some of my users have brought http://freedns.afraid.org to my attention. You can use afraid.org with tcp-over-dns without even registering a domain name. Set up any two subdomains so they look like this. freedns.afraid.org setupfreedns.afraid.org setup Make sure you replace the A record with the ip address of your server. You can use various clients to update this A record automatically if you ip address changes. Read more about it on afraid.org's webpage. Method 3: Our hosting company lets us edit our DNS record through a web interface. You can do the same thing if this sort of functionality is provided to you. Dreamhost DNS SetupDreamhost DNS Setup Step 2 - Setup the server Download and extract the tcp-over-dns software to the server machine you are using. Choose a port on the server you want the client to be able to access. Currently, there is no authentication, so keep security in mind. This works on any OS that runs java, and both TCP and UDP traffic is tunnelled through, so really any application you wish to use should work. Please note that you need to have a program running and listening on the --forward-port. You will connect to this program through the DNS tunnel. Some of the best choices are: * Proxy server (for basic web browsing) * An openssh server on linux (for controlling the server and also works as a proxy) * VPN server (your computer appears on the home network) * VNC server (for access to your desktop at home) The best choices are either the SSH posorry the bottom got cut off... Go here to view the entire walkthrough http://analogbit.com/tcp-over-dns_howtoThis is not for everyday use... this is for those that need to bypass some sort of firewall or software that is blocking certain sites... It is not intended for that kind of use... you can however encrypt the info being sent... it's just a name server and not operating in the traditional sense of a proxy... I've not ever been able to unscramble the garbled mess of characters of DNS traffic any ways when it's not encrypted... a better walkthrough is a video from Patchy and Nox of Infinity Exsist... http://www.infinityexsist.com more

Resolved Question: Do search engines descriminate against free webhosting sites?

Resolved Question: How hard is it to learn Web Design? How hard is it to start your own business?

I'm very interested in Web Designing, although I have never done it before. I am a very creative, organized, and business savy person, and am considering a career in web design. I would like to start a home business where I could create Web Sites for small businesses in the area: they come to me with what they want, ideas... I design/create a web site for them and contact the companies needed (IP address, domain name, etc...) to get the web site up and running.... Where/how/what do I need to do to learn enough to create/design small web sites for small local businesses? Can web design be accomplished using a user friend GUI or does it have to involve lots of programming and code (I did took a Visual Basic class in college and did great, but do NOT want to do web design if I will be coding my whole way thru it, not much into being a full time programmer...) And how hard is it to get the web sites set up (who do you contact to get a domain name registered? how about getting a static IP address? do you need to have some kind of server host? or is that something my clients could lease from a internet provider company?) I am not really sure of the process I'd need to go thru past doing the designing of the web site... Any advice or insight is appreciated....! Thank you! :<) more

Resolved Question: I'm working on my own web-page, how do I do this though?

If your current internet provider is Earthlink, AOL, SBC Global and others which provide a homepage; you can easily FTP your own webpage designs as a new homepage created by DreamWeaver, FrontPage or even Netscape Composer. And using a redirection service such as mydomain.com or the forwarding of a parked domain name at godaddy.com, you can easily "mask" the homepage URL with a proper domain name. So in a sense, you have a working ecommerce website disguised as a homepage while still paying your normal monthly Internet provider's access and hosting fee of the homepage. more

Voting Question: What is a catchy domain name to pick for Google's blogger.com?

I recently registered on blogger.com. I need advice on what website domain name I should come up with. My blog is not yet set up, but Google says that I can choose a domain name for $10.00 per year. This is waaaaay cheaper than my last web hosting service (through my internet company) that was $19.00 a month. What a rip off that was compared to blogger (which is free if you keep the " *dot* blogspot " in the domain title. My blog will have to do with neurological or mental disabilities and tic disorders (Tourette Syndrome, Autism, Schizophrenia, Parkinson's Disease, etc., etc., etc.). It is for raising disability awareness and for having information that people can utilize for online resources. I have a few questions that I will list so it is easier to read for you all: (1) Can you help me think of a catchy domain name title? (2) Where do all these other blogs get the associated press pics of information and stories? I was told flickr and so on, but I'm not sure. (3) Is it legal to use those stories in case some are copyrighted? (referring to the gossip ones)--> not that I wanna have that type of blog though. (4) And the last question I can think of is how can I get my blogger.com blog noticed (since the net is so saturated these days?) Everyone keeps saying SEO efforts, but I don't know how to do this with blogger.com or really how SEO works for blogs like that. Anyways, thanks for the help. Sorry for the long info. -A more

Resolved Question: website host and domain name. better to have them together?

if i want to buy a domain name ending with .co.uk i need to get it from a company in UK, if i want co.fr then france right? usually better to get a domain name and have it host by the same company to get the cheaper deal? how does it work if i get a domain name from a different company than a hosting company? especially different countries. i live in south africa that is co.za. and i think it is cheaper than buying .com. but seems like i can find a cheaper, decent web-hosting overseas than in south africa. is it doable? lastly how does the whole thing work? my website is written in asian language so asians are aimed viewers. if i have a web-hosting company using server in america, the viewers have to go to the server far from asia. is it an disadvantage? or no big deal? how about domain names? does it affect in anyway depending on where to get it from? i dont even have internet access at home. and not be able to have it anytime soon. so the cheaper simpler the better. thank you in advanceshoulda fallen under internet not programing and design. my bad more

Resolved Question: starting up an internet web based business?

Hi, I have about $15000 to start up a web based business. My interests/passions are travelling/backpacking and writing. But this doesn't mean I'm limiting myself to a travel based business; I'm open to any ideas. I also have a fairly good knowledge with Internet technologies such as html, Wordpress, web hosting, domain names, etc, but I am not a programmer. I would like to have a go at starting up a web based business. I appreciate this is a very competitive market. Nevertheless, I would still like to give it a try. My ultimate goal is to run this business while I am travelling, and although I don't expect to become an overnight millionaire, I would like to earn enough money to pay for my travel expenses. I'd be very content with earning $2000 a month. I've heard that it is very difficult to earn decent money through advertising. Is this true? Are there other ways for small businesses to earn money from a small web based business. I appreciate any help/suggestions. thank you more

Voting Question: I can ping a website but not access it ?

Recently I haven't been able to access a single website. I work for the company editing the site so I really need to get onto it. I tried pinging the website with command prompt and the MS-DOS program (command.com) and I could ping it without any problems. However...I can't get onto it. In firefox it says 'Connecting to www.vpswiz.com' for about 50 secs before telling me it's timed out. In IE it just says Waiting for www.vpsmax.com for ages before I loose my patience and just close the window down. I have tried renaming the hosts file to hosts.old, I have tried adding the IP of the resolved domain name and the domain name, I've tried deleting the file and moving it. I have restarted my router, tried using OpenDNS...I've restarted my internet. Why can't I get on the website? Oh and I have also cleared all priivate data. the URL is: www.vpswiz.com and it shouldnt have been blocked by my ISP because it's completely legal and it's a web host provider. PLEASE PLEASE HELP! more

Voting Question: How a website helps getting you business via internet?

If someone was looking for a product or service, they would use printed media i.e. Yellow Pages or News paper classified advertisement to search for a suitable company, that provided the product or service they needed. But that was how things were done in past. Times have changed, and now Yellow Pages listing or News paper advertisement have been taken over by more robust advertisement solution on the internet with websites. If you own or work for a small or a big company, it is must to own a website. It is cost effective, fast, versatile and easily accessible from any location. website49.co.uk provides you with a website within 72 hrs of order at a low cost of just £49 with free domain name registration and and web hosting for 1 year. Resolved Question: Exchange 2003 won't receive emails from the internet, please help!!!!?

I'm running Small Biz Server 2003 w/Exchange 2003 at home. It's really just for practise/learning use. I can send emails from a client's Outlook 2007 inside the domain AND outside the domain successfully. However, I can't email any of my users from OUTSIDE my domain. If I send an email from my cox.net address and send it to user1@mydomain.com, user1 doesn't get the email. And, the cox.net address does NOT get an undeliverable. (It did get an undeliverable prior to me figuring out that I had to set up the MX record, which now makes sense to me.) It's almost as if the email is out in limbo somewhere......?? I bought my domain from mydomain.com and I set up my MX record there. I used servername.mydomain.com for the MX record. This is correct, right? Also, on Exchange, I have the smtp connector configured to, "Forward all mail through this connector to the following smart hosts" (smtp.east.cox.net) And finally, I have the properties of the POP3 connector Manager configured as follows: Email server: ns1.mydomain.com <---per www.mydomain.com's Web site....I think this is the correct entry that I am to put here, right?? Port: 110 User name: user1 password: ^^^^***** confirm password" ******* Mailbox type: User Mailbox Exchange Mailbox: User1 Why won't Exchange recieve emails?!?! Please if someone can help me I'll be soooooooo happy. I'm so lost and it's driving me nuts........ Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Could someone who speaks Englisg as their first language tell me if this text needs to be edited? Thx?

Important Tips: 1- As you're registering your name, you will be presented with the option of adding Privacy to your domain registration. A private domain registration will keep your information (name, email address, etc.) out of the global Internet database, and will prevent a lot of spam from reaching your email box. It is highly recommended you select this option. 2- Avoid web hosts offering free domain. Try to register the name yourself, so that you can be sure that you are registered as the owner. If your web host places itself as the owner, they can always decide to not let you change your web hosting service. Especially if you are not happy with their hosting service it can be catastrophic! So don’t accept any free domain name and pay for it. 3- Don’t trust any cheap service. Some registrars are cheating and misleading their customers. For example if the price of a domain name is $10 /year, they offer it $2 for first year. But next years they charge $35 to renew the domain name! On the other hand, many of cheap services don’t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you are looking for a safe and cheap service that works for you, GoldPuma.com is a reliable website to register your desired domain name. Their service is one of the lowest cost services on the web which is really full-featured and easy-to-use. They offer free extras with every domain name and you can check out their hot prices by going there. more

Resolved Question: Hi What is the difference between Web-hosting and buying your own domain and host yourself?

I have checked on the internet. For Web-hosting, it gives you a domain name but the prices are too high like $ 4.99 per month. However, when i tried to buy my own domain at Register.com, it cost me only $14.19 per year, which is much cheaper. What is the difference between this two? Is there any specific website which can be trusted to buy domain with credit card? so many frauds this days, none can be trusted over the internet you know. I thank anyone in advance who could answer my question. more

Resolved Question: I get error messages when trying to use Firefox and IE and I can't ge to any pages. Any help please?

Well basically, today I got internet on my laptop by having an ethernet cable connected from main computer to my laptop via a Linksys cable modem. So, we all thought it worked until I tried to install Windows Live Messenger (I tried this on IE) and it came up with this: The page cannot be displayed The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please try the following: Click the Refresh button, or try again later. If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly. To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP). If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings. If you would like Windows to try and discover them, click Detect Network Settings Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed. If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0. Click the Back button to try another link. so I tried on Firefox and it came up with this: Address Not Found download.microsoft.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again. The browser could not find the host server for the provided address. Did you make a mistake when typing the domain? (e.g. "ww.mozilla.org" instead of "www.mozilla.org") * Are you certain this domain address exists? Its registration may have expired. * Are you unable to browse other sites? Check your network connection and DNS server settings. * Is your computer or network protected by a firewall or proxy? Incorrect settings can interfere with Web browsing. Most pages I can't seem to get onto on both IE and MF. I am on my laptop now on Yahoo Answers, and this site works fine. I have googled for help and it says about turning of Firewalls etc, but I don't have a Firewall on this laptop I don't think because I had to do a Hraddrive reset not too long ago and everything got reset to as if it was a brand new laptop. My laptop is Windows XP. I have done everything that it says to do on the error pages, yet still nothing. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks. Sparkie177@aol.com is my email if this is easier. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: The internet: How much did you loose last year?

I lost like $200. Main reason? My domain name addiction! I think of good names and things I could do with them. But I simply do not have the time to make my ideas a reality. Overall I spent about $600 last year on domain names and web hosting. In return - I only got back like $400 through selling products and advertising. I would be a few hundred ahead if I could just make myself drop the unprofitable domain names and finish developing the sites that are doing well. But it's so unbelievably hard to do! Please, wish me luck as I work to get back on track this year. (So far so good - less than 2 months into the year and I have already dropped 4 unprofitable domain names and earned about $50.)Janey ... I was actually wondering if something like that would be beneficial to my sites. I would love to talk more to you about it. more
