Hello I would like to make a web page. I am a newbie but I would like to be a professional some day. Currently I use ASPX for this web page I am making at work. I haven't started doing HTML, XML, Dreamweaver, PHP, etc yet but would like to eventually get there. I know SQL, MYSQL, perl, java, visual basic. I am planning to use a site for applying for jobs purposes. I will want some space to upload my computer programming works and either the human resource downloads the software I created or can play with it online. I have a domain name registered with Google (gdomains through godaddy). I really love having everything handled through Google. I love the email, I'm used to the platform for my DNS settings, I like their file hosting, I have advertising credit, the registration price is perfect and includes 50 usernames and 90 CNAMES. The only thing is I really really don't like the Google Sites hosting platform. I know this isn't ideal but I'm really not ready to do a full transfer to a new host. Basically I just want something that will allow me to redirect my already registered domain name to a basic webpage that I can create through the host site. I have my own layout coded and everything and had my site up on Blogger, which was pretty close to how I want it in terms of features but it wasn't giving me the freedom I wanted to add extra pages and things like that. To water it down my site is basically a "blog" but I need 5 separately archived pages so you can see how that would be a problem with something like Blogger. Especially with my CNAMES because blog sites don't allow naked URLs. I use Webs for free hosting on smaller projects but I'm not sure if I trust them with my domain, plus I can't afford a premium package right now. I don't need the extra storage space or any of the other perks of a package deal right away, I know if I start getting traffic I will need to upgrade but I already have more than enough assets through Google to get started. If anyone has any suggestions or tips or even just hosting sites they would recommend that would be really helpful.@ledfrog.com- Yeah, that's pretty much exactly what I want to do, I just need to find a host that lets me do that. Today I was talking with the girlfriend of my my cousin, she works in a hospital, she told me that the hospital has contacted a professional web designing company in order in order to update the website because it's too old, she told me that the web designing company want 13k which is just a little bit expensive :) I know how to create a website, I have 1 under construction and I will build 2 in the near future, so she asked me if I can design a website, I told her yes, I can, she asked about the cost, I said that it's nothing, it's less than 1$ a month, because I can host it for free, and godaddy take about 12 $, but I thought that she want a personal website, I didn't know that she was asking me to update the website of the hospital:) So I was very polite and told her that it's free :P because I didn't want to take from her 1 $ a month :D And after a while, I understood that the website belongs to a hospital and that hospital has already registered a domain name, and I was shocked when she said that the hospital was going to pay 13 k to just update the website, I said that I'm ready to work on that website, but I need 4k to do it, because in order to create a professional website I have to pay about 500$ to get the best web package available and I want 3k to my pocket:) I said that because the girl is not going to pay anything, the hospital will pay everything:) Nothing is official yet, I don't know if the hospital is going to accept my offer, I know that building a website for a hospital is easy because this kind of websites do not required a hard work to be finished, most of the hospitals in Lebanon (I'm from Lebanon) have a homepage a support page, about us and it's all basically. I'd like to move away from services like YouTube and Vidmeo when hosting my Vodcasts. I'd like software, (preferably free or open source; but of course if I need to pay I will), that I can install on my linux based web host and will simply let me upload a video file in avi, 3gp, mpeg or wmv formats, will convert the file to flv format and will then automatically stick the file into a flash player and let me embed the file in my blog or another other web page. I don't need direct linking however, nor do I want one of those turn-key web hosting website solutions. I'm not interested in letting anyone else use the service (I don't have the bandwidth) I just want something private, just for me that I can use for my videos. Any and all SERIOUS and CONSTRUCTIVE suggestions would be great.Given the answers I've received thus far it is clear that my question hasn't been understood. The site visitor needs to be able to do a keyword search and call up all the photos whose captions match the keywords in their search. Some of the photo captions need to have hot links to other pages. In essence, the site is a home page, a searchable photo database with text that describes the photos, a message board or email link, and about 10 more pages of text about other topics. I have never done a web site. I have a domain name and a web host. The easy part. Now, what program to use? I'd appreciate your opinion as to whether I should spend the money and buy DreamWeaver or if I could use the free KomPozer or how I could determine if one of the web-builder programs offered by the web hosting companies might work ???? Once upon a time, there was a free web-hosting site called Geocities. Geocites was owned by Yahoo! This web-hosting site would allow you put up your own HTML as well as CSS. If you didn't know HTML or CSS or too lazy to use them, they let you use a page builder. But one day, Yahoo! closed it down and make you pay for it. Ok, so you get the picture. I created an account on Webs. They have a page builder like Geocities. Unlike Geocities, they have templates. I chose one temporarily until I could learn how to build a CSS layout of my own. It was also years since I've last used HTML, and I wanted to experiment with them again until I could recall what the basics were. But... instead of getting a blank-blank page, with nothing on it, I only got a site-builder with my chosen template with the option of giving you a content box, and in that content box, it lets you do some html. Brilliant. Simply brilliant. Call me old-fashioned, but I don't want pre-chosen layouts unless I ASKED. So... any such sites that are similar to the former free hosting site? How about any (free) programs in case I want to experiment them offline?
