Open Question: How Can we get sWindles XP Networking to Use the Hosts File?

We are plagued with browsers, (IE & Firefox) forever messing around with "Finding" or "Looking up" domain names - and usually failing to resolve the domains - so I have populated the Hosts files of each computer with the domain names of our frequently used web sites. There are times when this seems to work well, but there are also times when the browsers seem to ignore the Hosts file, and we're back to "Finding" or "Looking up" all the domain names. I can tell when the Hosts file is being used, because Hosts directs malware and other unwanted sites' domains to 0.0.0.0. If pages finally load under these conditions, it appears that the CSS formatting has gone missing, so everything is in black & white, arranged vertically, and left-justified. This occurs most frequently when a computer has just started up or has been idle for a few hours, but it doesn't occur every time. After doing several Repairs on a connection, it may begin to use the Hosts file, but not always. We frequently have to give up and restart a computer, and hope that we won't have to Repair the connection too many times afterward, to get Hosts lookup working. We used to have a problem with losing connections when switching users on a computer, but not since I added the Windows Registry entry to keep connections across sessions, so that isn't the problem. Computer #1: Toshiba Satellite; XP Media Center Edition SP3 Computer #2: Gateway 7330GZ (laptop); XP Home SP2 Computer #3: HP Pavilion; XP Pro SP1 #3 is a very early XP machine, with only 192 MB of available RAM, and #2 isn't much better, so I'm not inclined to burden them with the OS bloat of later service packs, considering that MyCrudSoft didn't bother to fix this problem in later service packs. I'm also not inclined to trade up to and learn how to cope with and work around a whole new set of malfunctions in a newer version of sWindles, with no assurance that MyCrudSoft has fixed the present malfunctions; after all, if they fixed this in Vista or 7, they should have deployed the fix in an update for XP.Andrew S: Thanks for that thought. I have considered it, since I do have a lot of domains populated. However, that doesn't seem to account for this problem occurring primarily after starting up the computer or after it has been idle. The computer should have more memory and resources available at such a time, with which to deal with that burden. I've also tried running with an empty Hosts file - or no Hosts file - and the older computers then run slower on the Internet, apparently due to loading so many graphical ads on sites like Yahoo! and Facebook. more

Open Question: Can anyone advise me on how to handle this problem with my web designer?

I have owned a website for several years. The website is pretty good. I had originally thought that the hosting fee of $20 a month included changes, but I'd often get hundreds of dollars in charges when I changed things. Even little things like changing background colors. I had asked her several times since I didn't understand, then she told me off in an email. After that I tried to find out how to get out. She said I was "stuck". I posted about it on here and someone dug around and found out she had my domain name listed under her company. I checked with the hosting site and they said with the right legal documents I can get it from her but it's a process. She has said I own my site but never given me any back up files. I'm going to call her and ask for the files. She had suggested in the past that I build sister sites to help draw more attention to my main site, so that is the excuse I'll use for asking for the files, and also as a "precaution in case she went out of business or something". I thought about asking her when she renews the domain if she would put it in my name? But when I've tried to ask her these types of questions in the past over email, she has taken weeks to respond then leaves out those answers. I'm a little concerned too if I give her any indication I know she owns the domain name she won't give me my files. My domain name is set to renew in a week, and I may have to renew since I can't get reestablished that quick. I wonder if I can renew for like 3 months? I hope that wasn't too confusing. I'm just trying to figure out what you would suggest I ask her for when I call. The main thing I guess I need are my website files, although I"m not sure really even what to ask for there. I've been curious about this for a while seeing how I would like to get into it as a side job sort of thing once I'm out of college but I'm completely stumped. So the questions are basically. -What kind of connection would you need to be able to keep multiple dedicated servers stable and lag free? (servers for web hosting and game hosting). -How do you go about getting such a connection? Do only certain ISP's offer it? Is it just a well above average connection? Or is it something you have to own a company just to get? -How much would such a connection cost? Most dedicated servers cost you about $300-900 a month on a lot of host reseller sites so I'm sure the connection would cost quite a bit(And I know there is probably a higher profit margin so they can pay off the machine itself) Any information is appreciated . I signed up for a blog through Wordpress.com and had my site as example.wordpress.com. I purchased a domain name through Wordpress.com and pointed my wordpress blog/site to it. I attempted to install a custom theme to Wordpress and couldn't, and after researching I found out that I needed to go through Wordpress.ORG in order to do these kind of things, even after purchasing the Wordpress.com CSS upgrade. I've attempted several times to download Wordpress through the .org site and I absolutely cannot understand what to do. I don't know how to do the FTP, FileZilla and I don't know what it means to webhost? Can someone please walk me through this? To start, I know next to nothing about HTML code. But I did somehow manage to teach myself how to build a website in flash and learned a little bit about actionscript. when I finished my site I published it from Flash to get an HTML file and an .swf file for each page of the site. This is where I'm stuck. I don't know how to go about hosting this on the web to where (1)each page will display correctly and (2)the button links [to each page] work. I tried using the html files on intuit.com but couldnt figure either of those two goals. The page just showed up completely black. Do I use the HTML files from when I published it or do I somehow embed to swf file into HTML code anthem upload it to the host site? I'm still very new to hosting webfiles so any help would be greatly appreciated. Also if there are any recommendations on which hosting site is the most "flash" user friendly I would love to know. hey everyone i need some help. but first my story. my google chrome was working fine one afternoon. i was surfing the web looking for deals on website hosting and suddenly... adobe reader pops up, begins to load and the suddenly stops with the error "you have been effected" next thing i know i have security tool anti-virus (a spyware pretending to be a anit-spyware). i succefully had it uninstalled however i still have some aftermath such as an C:\PROGRA~\MYWEBS~1\bar\2.bin\MWSBAR.DLL error code everytime my pc stats up. and whenever i try to use google crome a darkish blue webpage pops up over my chrome so i can't see the website and says "oh snap, page could not laod" then it has reference to google faq to find out what happened, but it won't even load that:( i think inside of my chrome there is an extra program that is hiding in the corners and everytime the web page tries to laod this "oh snap page loads onto of it and tells the original page to stop. if anyone can help me on this it would be most appreciative. thank you all in advance. -James info: windows xp ps. also firefox will requently crash. i tried uninstalling it and re-installing it but it just didn't help:( thanks again. more

I'm completely new and know nothing about business, but I'm very good with Dreamweaver and Flash. I'm a senior in high school and I'm starting to think about doing some freelance work in my town and the big city I live by. I'd like some answers from web designers themselves. My current host, and many others which I have seen have policies regarding offensive content (swear words, etc) - What are some hosting providers (dedicated/dedicated+vps/dedicated+vps+shared) that do not have something in the terms of use about content like that?Godaddy for example "pornographic, obscene or excessively profane content;" - I have forums which only I'm a mod/admin of currently, and I don't check everyone to make sure they don't use like softcore porn as a signature etc (which isn't rare for a rap music forum, and people really don't read the rules when they first register), things that I don't personally add might be deemed offensive because of reasons like that. more

I am helping my boss make a website for our restaurant, which is very basic with about 10 pictures total. He is very stingy and wants to do this cheaply or not at all, so if anyone could recommend a web host with a small amount of space, that'd be great. Do you guys get all your talking points from Glenn Beck? All I ever hear from Conservatives is that Net Neutrality is an Unconstitutional scam by President Obama to control and censor what content we can access on the Internet. This could not be further from the Truth. The concept of Network Neutrality was developed by web content hosts long before Obama became politically relevant. This principle basically states that an Internet Service Provider should not discriminate between legal, alike web content. In other words, AT&T should not allocate more network resource to iTunes Music Store traffic than Microsoft's Zune Marketplace, Verizon should not give preferential connections to Amazon users over Barnes and Noble Users and Comcast should not redirect users attempting to access Fox News to MSNBC's website instead. Furthermore, Network Neutrality is justified by Article I, Section 8, Clause 3 of the U.S. Constitution, also known as the Commerce Clause: "[The Congress shall have power] To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian tribes;" Network bias can result and has in the past resulted in irregular interstate eCommerce. The Government is obligated by their Constitutional responsibilities to regulate commerce across the Internet. All this being said, why are you all still opposed to Net Neutrality?Again, the Conservatives who have chosen to answer are revealing their ignorance of the issue. Network Neutrality doesn't give the Government ownership of the Internet, nor does it give the Government control over what content is available on the Internet. Network Neutrality does not violate the 1st Amendment in any way. If anything, Network Neutrality defends the 1st Amendment by preventing ISPs from blocking content they disagree with. Network Neutrality does not "subsidize" heavy traffic users, no more so than people who go to an "All You Can Eat" buffet and have one plate "subsidize" those who eat more. Heavy traffic users pay an agreed price for what is advertised as "unlimited" access and they use it. Working as intended. Finally, Network Neutrality would not make spamblockers illegal. The goal of Network Neutrality is to protect the rights of consumers to access legal web content of their choice in a timely manner. None of you have given a good argument against it. more

Resolved Question: Im getting Telus dsl 1-6 mbps connection Monday, and im very confuses if ill have good xbl connection?

So, on Monday im getting Telus high speed internet DSL. I am getting the 1-6 mbps connection. I will most likely have a very good 6mbps download speed, because my friend who lives right beside my house got telus dsl 1-6 mbps connection like 3 days ago, and he said he had 6 mbps download speed. Also, they built the hub(the place where the dsl connection comes from), in my area. My friend also said is ping was 14ms-50ms, wich is amazing to me. I am sooooo excited because i really like playing on xbox live, mw2 with friends, and i can't until i get Telus dsl. My friend sais that he has a very good 4 bars connection when he playing mw2 on xbox live, he has a 3-4 bars connection when hes running youtube and playing mw2 on xbox live, and he ONLY has under 3 bars when theirs a bad host. The thing that has bothered me and i can't get out of my mind is, i have a brother and sister, and when they are home they are always using the internet just like me. My sister is only using Facebook, and is sometimes on Youtube. My sister uses a wired connection, shes connected straight to the router. My brother, he likes playing online games, either hes playing online p.c games, world of warcraft or countertrike, or hes playing xbox live. If hes not gaming then hes just on facebook or serfing the net. My brother is connected wired, he uses the ethernet port in his wall in his room. When i am on xbox live, i will be using a wired connection, i will be connected through the ethernet port in the wall in my room. Though, if my brother is playing online games, and my sister is ONLY using facebook will i stay have a good 3-4 bars while playing mw2 on xbox live? Say if my sister is on facebook, and my brother is serfing the web will i still have a good 3-4 bars connection on mw2? This is the important part, will i have 4 bars, NOT 3 but 4 bars if my brother is the only other one using the internet besides me? If hes on facebook? Resolved Question: I bought a domain name and am kind of lost on hosting. I would really like to find free redirection?

I have a domain name registered with Google (gdomains through godaddy). I really love having everything handled through Google. I love the email, I'm used to the platform for my DNS settings, I like their file hosting, I have advertising credit, the registration price is perfect and includes 50 usernames and 90 CNAMES. The only thing is I really really don't like the Google Sites hosting platform. I know this isn't ideal but I'm really not ready to do a full transfer to a new host. Basically I just want something that will allow me to redirect my already registered domain name to a basic webpage that I can create through the host site. I have my own layout coded and everything and had my site up on Blogger, which was pretty close to how I want it in terms of features but it wasn't giving me the freedom I wanted to add extra pages and things like that. To water it down my site is basically a "blog" but I need 5 separately archived pages so you can see how that would be a problem with something like Blogger. Especially with my CNAMES because blog sites don't allow naked URLs. I use Webs for free hosting on smaller projects but I'm not sure if I trust them with my domain, plus I can't afford a premium package right now. I don't need the extra storage space or any of the other perks of a package deal right away, I know if I start getting traffic I will need to upgrade but I already have more than enough assets through Google to get started.
