I develop websites for small businesses and have been approached by a Photographer who wants a website with the facility to order their photos online. For example, If the photographer were to take photos at a wedding then they could provide their client with a password where family and friends would be able to go on to the photographers website, view the photos (with watermarks) and then place their orders. I think the solution to this is for me to build the client a nice website and then integrate a photography program into the site so that customers can then order photos (which are hosted on another server) without the web space getting full. I know there are some programs on the internet that provide this function but I dont know what they are called and would appreciate some recommendations. Does it happen a lot? I have experience of building websites for many differnet types of clients from fishing tackle shops to bus companies. Okay so if someone steals this idea then I guess they do. I was thinking why are there no web sites that have applications that you pay for available ONLINE to use? Sure they already have that but I am talking about applications like Word, Excel, Autocad etc. You could have them all paid for ONLINE you can use them just as you would on your desktop only the advantage is YOU DON'T have to install anything and when you save the filetype you can use it on the next computer WITHOUT having that software INSTALLED ON THE NEXT COMPUTER YOU GO ONTO. You just take the filetype with you and hypothetically log into the site that hosts the applications. I was thinking that maybe you could make deals with Microsoft etc. for profit sharing on each app you sell online; the only problem I see is that larger companies might just start doing it themselves since it isn't a patentable idea. Maybe it could be a thing for just smaller software companies to promote their applications? OR last but not least maybe you could create software, and maintain it which would help companies like Microsoft QUICKLY transfer their applications to online use via their servers or yours? My husband and I are looking to make a website for our small business. We know the domain name isn't taken and we just want something simple like 1 page with info about the company, so people will see it when they search on google etc... I would like to do web design for small clients locally with an online web editor. It's a website that allows you to edit your own websites and make them, also allowing you to mask it to their domain. It does require a monthly service contract for ad-free pages, and I was wondering if this was okay to sell as a service? I would have my customers set up the web hosting with their own cc, instead of billing it as a third party and paying for it myself, but is this illegal? I don't see why utilizing a web service someone is paying for to build the site for them (so they don't have to) would be a problem. Setting up a firewall configuration for a small business A small company with computer resources consisting of a Ubuntu server and a Windows server, a group of desktops and laptops requests a network setup and firewall configuration that will provide more security and control. Two machines will be used as firewalls. They have decided on a network topology where the laptops and desktops are placed in the same subnet, but they are separated by a level two bridge. This makes it possible to install a stealth firewall on this bridge. (Conviniently the topology is equal to your virtual network, except for the bridge, so you need to change this for your virtual network.) In addition theywant a web based graphical logging of the amount of connections to their site. Installing server and client software In order to make the network more realistic and thereby also testing the firewall setup, you shall start by installing somserver software. It is a good idea to install the software and make sure it works before you start implementing the firewalls. apache2 on Ubuntu Stop and remove the apache server running at the gateway, you should not run a webserver at your gateway. Next install apache2 on server1. If you are not able to sudo su on some of the VM’s, try just su and the same password. Installation is straightforward: server1 # apt-get install apache2 Then you enter the following (apt-get install nano (or jed) if you need an editor, use copy and paste) in the file /var/www/index.html <h1>Server1: Ubuntu webserver at 10.0.0.4</h1> 1 Entering 10.0.0.4 in Firefox at the gateway, this text you entered should pop up if everything is correct. apache2 onWindows XP Next you should do the same on server2, the Windows server. Google for ‘apache install Windows’ or follow the instructions at http://www.ricocheting.com/server/apache.html. It ismost strightforward if you download the selfextracting msi-file. Use version 2.2.6 or newer. Enter your email-adress when asked. After finishing the installation, choose Config Apache Server and edit config file from the Start-menu and enter the IP-address 10.0.0.3 as ServerName (No name is obviously registered in DNS for this host). If you enter 10.0.0.3 in firefox at the gateway, you should now be able to see the text ’It works’. Try to find out how to change it to a similar text as server1. (Hint: C:\Program Files\Apache Software Foundation\Apache2.2\htdocs\index.html) Munin at server1 The Ubuntu Web-server should run Munin in order to enable you to generate a web-GUI with statistics from the two firewalls. You need just the Munin master node on server1 which you install by apt-get install munin Next you edit the file /etc/munin/munin.confand the only change you need there is to add [gateway.vm] address 10.0.0.1 use_node_name yes [choke.vm] address 10.0.0.2 use_node_name yes which makes Munin collect data from gateway and choke. At the choke (and gateway, but there you have probably already installed it) you just install munin-node which collects data for the Munin master by apt-get install munin-node and here you can write plugins and stop and start the munin-node. At the bottom of /etc/munin/munin-node.conf on both the choke and the gateway you need to add 2 allow ^10\.0\.0\.4$ and restart munin-node in order to allow server1 to collect data from the munin-nodes. You should now be able to see data from both the gateway and the choke if you from the gateway browse at 10.0.0.4/munin. Later you will receive more instructions on the plugins you should write. Remote Desktop Server at server2 This server is already running and should continue to run. MySQL on desktop and server1 In the real case the webservers retrives some of their content from a common database, a MySQL-server running on server1. However, the company does not want to have their database containing some sensitive data in the DMZ. So another MySQL-server is running on the Desktop-machine (10.0.2.2) inside the LAN.However, don’t do the installation of these databases, just pretend they are installed. You are not supposed to set up more services than those mentioned here. When MySQL, samba and other services are mentioned later, pretend they are present in the network. Network Policy The employee working in the company in charge of the project does not have an education in networking, but he is able to give a rough description of their desired network policy. • Everything that is not specified will be dropped. • The laptops and desktops may surf the Internet, but the servers may not. • SSH access to the internal choke firewall machine is only allowed from the server1 and the desktops. Yesterday I signed up with JustHost.com and I am DISAPPOINTED. They offered daily backups, but now they want to charge for it. I asked for help and they have yet to answer. About 3 years ago I had a small business account with Yahoo, and I did like the ease of use. I always had quick help when needed with no hassles. I only used it a short time because of illness. It appears have changed a little bit since then, and I want a new web host. I would love to have the easy site builder like Yahoo had at that time. The program was downloadable so I could build on my computer to upload later. The other programs made it so very easy to use. Everything was point and click, and there were no premium services that I needed to add. I want that same ability, but I would like to have chat and possibly a forum and the ability to offer blogs to other users. The blogs is not a priority, though. Chat is number one priority. Forum is number two. Ease of use - preferably point and click - is what I need. It would be nice to have the ability to link to a video or be allowed to upload a video. JustHost does not allow this. I would like to do a small paid membership webcam and video website from home. 1. Do I need to buy and expensive webcam or can I just buy a laptop with a built in webcam? 2. Voting Question: Should I use MobileMe or find another website host?

I just made a website in iWeb for my small business and have been looking to post it online ASAP. I tried using Hostexcellence however they could not create an account for me (the customer service was not helpful and would give me no details) My site is very basic and I only have a few small downloads on the site (like pdfs) Going for something simple and nothing fancy just yet. I heard it's extremely easy for iWeb to sync with MobileMe. But have also heard sometimes the syncs are slow. However I do like the fact that MobileMe has other features (i'm on the go a lot) and like everythign to be synced with my iPhone...however...this web hosting issue needs to get done first. MobileMe is in my budget range and I would like to keep all of this around that price ($100/yr) Any advice? more

I was wonder a few things about the Yahoo small business and site editor you use with it. It seems like you can use the templates they give you or make a whole website on your own and upload it using the web hosting tools. I was wondering if you could take the site design using the site editor and ftp it down or transfer the website to dreamweaver or some other editor so that I could customize it? If not is there any way to really customize the site in the store editor, it seems very limited to me, but my options are to stick with it or create a whole website from scratch. more
