All of these are connected to the same router, some through cat5e cable, some through 802.11g... I have been having some problems with the router lately... Hi a have a four year old vista pc. I just got a new computer (a mac) and want to use the old pc as a home server for my mac, and 2 other pc's. The pc has only 60g of memory but i do have a 1T external HDD for it. I want to use it for three main purposes: File storage, back up, and music/video itunes library. If possible i would like to accesses these files from an iphone/ipod touch. For the backup i would like to use my mac's time machine and some other program (i have to find one) for the pcs. I am ok with installing linux or anything if its needed. I already have a wifi network and the pc in question has wifi capabilities, but i could link it straight into the network router with a cable.Thanks for the answers but i all really want to do is make the PC a network drive so i can reach it from a different computer on my network. I know macs do this wonderfully as i can just click on it from the finder and look at the files, but im mainly not sure one the PCs. As for the iphone i mean is there like an app to access it. I know there are apps to access files through dropbox, but is there anything more direct? more

I am considering buying a brand new Asus EEE PC netbook, 900 series. Basic specs: screen 8.9"; 120GB SATA hard drive; 1GB memory; 900mhz Celeron processor; wireless LAN. It will be pre-loaded with Windows XP (I would probably prefer Linux, but I'll get to that in a moment) and I'm assuming the included battery would be a 3-cell battery. Now, I obviously don't expect this to be a primary PC; I have a desktop computer and an older laptop. I really only want a netbook because it will be much easier to carry around on a daily basis. However, I'm not sure if a 900mhz processor will be quick enough to handle what I want to use this netbook for, or if having Windows XP loaded will make the fan run louder/the system run hotter. I'm a grad student and I write a ton of papers, mostly 20-pagers, and I always participate in NaNoWriMo. I'd also want to take this unit to the library to use the wireless and read scholarly articles from EbscoHost (mostly 10-20 page articles in HTML or PDF format). And obviously, I'd want to surf the net and check my e-mail from time to time. I don't plan on listening to music on it or streaming a whole lot of video; I have an iPod for that. :) So, I guess I have several questions: will this netbook most likely be able to live up to my demands; that is, will it be able to handle that much word processing? Will it be so slow it will hardly be usable? (I can handle a little lag when opening files, the browser, etc; I can't handle a 10 second wait every time I click something or constant freezing.) Will the fan loudly and, if so, would reloading the computer with Linux improve the situation?OH! And this particular model does not have a pre-installed webcam, but I would like to talk to my mother over Skype. Ok, so i decided to try putting a song on my computer from Linux Ubuntu using rhythmbox. At first I was delighted that i was able to use Linux to put songs on my iPod, but when i disconnected it it was screwed. The cover art was all messed up stuff from videos was on music some had nothing and nothing was in order, so i plugged it into my imac and all it did was wipe all of the cover art exept three which are out of order. I tried syncing it with Windows, resetting, and still NOTHING!!! Its all screwed up and i have like 3000 songs with cover art that i dont want to have to redo all over again :( But the cover art still shows up on the main menu in the slideshow, so im not sure if its still there or what...HELP ME!!!i have it synced with windows because it works with xp and my imac more

What's wrong with my iPod? Its a 2nd Generation 30GB Video. It is unable to load some songs and may even skip to the next song in the middle of one. Once, it went 4 seconds into one song and skipped to the next one, but I went into iTunes, removed the sone from my iPod, and put it back on and it worked fine. Last night, it crashed at least 4 times while playing songs. My iPod has Rockbox, iPod Linux, iPod Linux Bootloader, and a theme using iPod Wizard on it. And don't give me this crap that I should take any or all of it off because I had all of that on it for a good 7-8 MONTHS before this started happening. Any ideas? more

Resolved Question: I accidentally deleted my iPod's MBR. How could I restore it without losing data?

My 80GB video iPod had custom partitions, including a Linux ext3 partition. Today, while managing my music collection, I accidentally restored my iPod's MBR to the default one (one small partition for the firmware and one big FAT32 partition for the music), and restored the firmware and bootloader to the default one. My computer can still detect the files that were in the FAT32 music partition of my iPod, and I'm now making backups of my music collection (tranferring 60000 files to my computer using USB 1.1 is long...) Is tere a way to revert the changes I have made to my iPod, or at least to prevent any data corruption on my iPod's harddrive ? Howdy, mmmk so Im a student (last yr of highschool woooo!!!) in the market for a new laptop, i've currently got an XP PC and have always used PC's, but need to upgrade. Errr ok, the things that my laptop needs to be able to do: a fair bit of playing videos, dvds and music (transfer to Mp3 (not an ipod T_T) homework (lots of word docs- also, i'll need to be able to use peripherals and be compatible with school PC's.) surfing the net (quite alot so wireless also essential) instant messaging NO gaming some other applications (nothing too hardcore) (pref 13-14 inch screen, > or =2 Ghz dual core, >120 gb HD, GOOD BATTERY LIFE! >3 hrs would be awesome) budget: preferably less than $1700 australian dollars Alot of the features of Macbooks appeal to me, the battery life, aethetics, supposed security of the OS and ease of use, but of course, i've also heard macs are horrible and incompatible, limited applications available etc etc BUT i've also heard bad things about the resource hogging and hackable nature of Vista...what to do?? So really, honestly, should i get a Macbook? Is Vista really that bad? (and no Linux or Bootcamp suggestions pls! =]) And is it worth switching to Macs/OS X? No clue about the player though. I’m looking at spending a total of about 300 - 325 $ at the max. Highest priority is sound quality. A must - have is the ability to use it on my Linux machine, which means no restrictions like those on the iPod (can add music only with the iTunes?). Pretty much rules out the iPod and the Zune. I would mostly use it on trains or buses on long journeys (which is one reason I thought I would go for the Sennheiser canalphones). Support for OGG and/or FLAC formats would be nice. I don’t really care for video support, I just want the music :D Please help... I badly need some guidance. more

I mean let's face it Apple have updated the iPod periodically so there's no doubt that there'll be an updated iPhone at some point. And I mean a different iPhone maybe like a 3rd generation iPhone or an iPhone Nano for example. What would you like the next version to be. Half the size with twice the battery life? Full screen on the front with a slide out keyboard? Or maybe a folding iPhone would float your boat? How about iPhone Video with video calling? I'm sure everyone will expect the next iPhone to have 30gb storage space and the ability to junk your phone and iPod and combine them in the iPhone is just so attractive. Finally there's no getting away from the fact that the iPhone currently has the best mobile phone browser. There's no getting away from it - as sure as eggs is eggs - you are highly likely to get an iPhone one day at some point, no matter whether you have a Windows PC, an Apple PC, or a Linux PC. So what do you want from it and how do you hope it'll change in the future? (Could anyone please reply with an answer othe than 'I will never be getting one' please? This wasn't bait to draw you into an arguement - highly likely doesn't mean God's law says you will get one.) more

Windows vista has messed up on me many times and i have had to reinstall. i am always getting this error your windows activation is invalid. this is after a MANY full reformatted hard drives and installations and it does it after like 2 weeks. im sick of it and i am going to reinstall it one LAST time and then dual boot ubuntu (i have dual booted before just to get my files back after vista breaking) and maybe delete windows after i learn how to use it. i am 13 and want to learn how to use computers better. i am far better then anyone my age with computers but i know i am a lot worse then most people out there even though friends say i am amazing. I need help in getting started. when i was dual booting i couldn't get internet but I never really messed with it much but i did try enabling restricted drivers. which version of linux will be best for me? also does it have any good video editing software like sony vegas, does it have good video converting software+ ipod uploading software?TY more

i have a 80GB video ipod (5.5Generation), and i Run Ubuntu Linux 7.10. I am using Rockbox on my ipod because I got sick of the apple firmware. Is there a way that I can sync the new songs i have downloaded on linux to my ipod? I have read many other answers and people say its impossible except doing it through itunes. I'm trying to convert a .avi file to work on my 3rd Gen iPod Nano on linux. I'm using Ubuntu, and I can build from source. I have tried using various windows conversion programs through wine, but none of them work. FFMpeg seems to be the best program for it to work, but I can't get my head around how to use the different switches. So if anyone can provide me with a program which converts the video file, or the correct usage of FFMpeg, I would really appreciate it. Thanks! more
