So I called the apple store to see how much it would cost to fix the screen, and they told me I can't fix the screen because of some bullshit that the screen is attached to the back and it would so cslle mess the whole iPod up. It's a really old 5th generation iPod I think, its from 2005. It's one of those iPod videos, or so they used to call them, with 30gb of memory. I do not have the warranty or documents or anything anymore, just the iPod. The problem is, the battery stopped working. I plug it in for a few seconds and it says it's fully charged and when I try to use it it says it needs to be charged and then shuts down. The battery life progressively decreased to zero. If I went to an Apple store what could they do for me? Would they replace my iPod with a new one? Or would they repair/replace the battery? How much would this cost each cost? How much time would it take? Thanks a lot to whoever can answer this. more

My laptop crashed a few weeks ago, but since I have a desktop as well, and because it will cost over $300 to have my laptop repaired, I am just going to settle with using the desktop for now. The only downside is, all of my songs and videos for my iPod Touch were on my laptop. I want to add more songs to my iPod, but I'm afraid that if I plug my iPod into the desktop, it will erase all of my songs that are currently on my iPod. (iTunes is already installed on the desktop, but there aren't any songs in the library). Is there any way I can get the songs from my iPod to my desktop computer, so that I can re-create my iTunes library? Or is it possible to enter my e-mail address and my songs automatically load to iTunes? Please only answer if you REALLY know what you're talking about...I have over 100 songs, so, there is a lot of money invested in this that could be gone with one wrong move. Thanks more

Resolved Question: my ipod video won't hold a charge anymore. what's my most practical option?

For some reason, it just dies about 20 minutes after it's unplugged no matter how long you charge it and even if it's not in use. I took it to an apple store but the warrantee is up so they told me they don't really do repairs, they just kept pressuring me to buy a new ipod, which i don't want to do. they try to trick you into believing that trading in your old one for 10% off is a good deal. ANYWAY, I found some sites that offer new batteries, and instructions and tools for installing them. In all honesty though, I'm not sure if these sites are reliable, or if the battery is even the real problem. Maybe there's a short, for example, which is what killed the battery. I don't know anything about electronics. So could you recommend a good site for these type of things, or if you think it's better to get a new mp3 player altogether, which do you recommend and why? If you have a third option, I'd like to hear that too. Thanks everyone. more

My iPod is older, I think its the first one that was able to show pics & video. It was synced to my old desktop which has crashed and is beyond repair. A LOT of the music on the iPod is music that was copied from cds which I no longer have. Is there away to sync my iPod to my new laptop without losing all of my old music? I would really like to be able to listen to some new tunes on my iPod, but I don't want to lose all the music that I have on it. more

Voting Question: my hp slimine wont power on anymore. before it said configuring updates stage 3 of 3 now this?

i got the update message of doom ("configuring updates stage 3 of 3 0%") and my fiance didnt like it being in the never ending reboot loop so she tried a few things then unplugged it from the wall she eventually decided to try again and plugged back in and discovered the power would not turn on, i was busy so about 45 min. later i went in the bedroom and pressed the power button... nothing i then held the button in for a few seconds ad it came on then i tried a few things (restore back to 3 days ago, restore to last good config., auto repair,etc.) nohing, so i looked it up on my ipod (it was the only internet access i had) and discovered it could be easily fixed by bootng from a vista boot disc then installing all available updates and restart at which point it should show the same message only this time it will go through to 100% and start normally. while i was trying to get ahold of a boot disc (or pc access to create one) i manually shutdown my pc (by holding down the power button). when i went to turn it on again it was unplugged from the monitor (i was preparing to take it to a friends house) and it started to beep medium length beeps that were never ending so i plugged it up to the monitor to see if there was a status message and the screen was black. i went on packing it up and took it to the friends house at which point i discovered it would not power up. there is a green light on the back that comes on like usual but no response from the power button. please help!!! i have my sons entire life from birth until now on this pc and my fiance is trying to convince me to send it off. if i do every photo, every video, every cute memory will be gone and all his "firsts" also. feel free to email me directly, after we go home my ipod is the only internet access i will have. more

I'm looking at buying an MP3 or MP4 player. I used to have a Creative Zen Vision:M but it broke and was no longer under warantee, and I could but a new one for the price to repair it. The reason I bought it is that it seemed the best at the time, but that was 5 years ago... My question is, what it the best valued player? I want it to hold songs (Pref. something over 15GB) Must have a screen-Prefer iPod/Vision/Zune type screen with scroll pad type technology, but doesn't have to be one of these brands Must have good reviews Holding Pics would be great, but no required, same with video Would love something that has a calendar on it (I know my old Zen you could sinc with Microsoft outlook) but again, not required. The cheaper the better, but looking for quality too, since I was it to last me a while. I'm pretty careful with my players, though. So if you were me, what would you get and why? My iPod was working perfectly earlier. But about half an hour ago, I dropped it and now it says I have no music or video. Also it says "No Wi-Fi" and my Bluetooth is "unavailable" Does anyone know a way to fix it, or will I have to send it off to be repaired? It's less than a year old, so it should still be under the usual electronics warranty?I don't think it was because it had been dropped.. It's in pretty good condition, unlike a lot of people I know, their iPod's have cracked screens and dented backs and that. (: Mine had a few little dents and a few scratches but nothing major.. It's working now though.. I put it into Recovery mode, and restored it as a new iPod. That was all I did. I was so relieved! Thanks for your help though. :) more

I recently had this problem with my iPod Touch 8g (I got it on christmas, so it isn't that old.) I got this one to replace the old one i had (same model, everything worked fine until the motherboard snapped in half and wouldn't work) and my dad got an Apple Care thing that works for three years (my dad told me that it would repair any type of problem on the ipod, unless it was completely broken OR had been jail-broken) just in case anything of the sort happened again. So, yesterday, I was going to sync my old apps and music with my new ipod. I synced old photos, videos, music, and apps. I did not sync any movies, and my iPod didn't have maximum captivity. So I was all happy because all of my settings were back to the way they were. I wanted to try out a new app that I had bought. I tapped it, it opened for about 2 seconds, then it went back to the home screen. I was confused, thinking that it was only with that app. I deleted it, re-installed it, and the same thing happened. I thought that only that app had the problem, so I tried an app that I had recently recovered from my old ipod. (NOTE: My old iPod did not have any TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES, it just broke from a horrible fall down the stairs.) The same thing happened. I tried with an app that I had before, and guess what happened-- it wouldn't open. I got frustrated, especially because it was new and there was nothing wrong with it the same afternoon. I moved back all my information to my computer (which has plenty of space on it) and restored it. moved one app over to my ipod and tried it. It wouldn't open. So I deleted all of my apps, and tried it on the ones that came with the iPod (calendar, mail, contacts, clock, safari, youtube, and notes.) That worked fine. I could access Safari, and do all of the crap that nobody really does. Is there any way to fix this without going all the way to the Apple store and having them fix it for you? Also, it the number of Gs on it the problem?When you say "reset" does that mean turning it off? more

I have a 2008 ipod nano 10gb (video) and I dropped a 70 pound weight on it at the gym (i know.. i'm an idiot...) and now the screen is broken (it still lights up, but it gets glitchy and you cant see anything on the screen really (there is also a large crack) the device itself still works, memory is good, battery life is good, still plays music. so my question is this... would it be cheaper, or even possible to get the thing repaired? or would i be better off just buying a new one? more

Just over two years ago I bought an ipod from amazon uk. Last week the screen simply stopped working (just bright white when the back-light comes on). The rest of the device still works; I can play music if I can find it without the menu but obviously videos are out of the question. There is no visible damage to the screen or the outer case. The only thing I can think of is possibly dodgy wiring connecting the screen to the rest of the device. Amazon say that their warranty is only for a year so I can either get a new ipod or get apple to repair it for almost the cost of a new ipod. more

Alright, so approximately 2 years ago I purchased a macbook and it came bundled with a half-price or free (can't remember which) 30GB video iPod. I got a 3-year warranty for my macbook, but does it also apply to my iPod? it broke about 10 minutes ago (won't turn on, doesn't respond when I plug it in to a charger/laptop), and I am thinking of taking it to the Genius Bar to have it looked at, but I am low on cash so I'm trying to avoid repair/assessment costs. I own a 2g iPod Touch 32GB, with firmware 3.0.1 I'm pretty sure, but anyways, I have a medical problem so I carry around water in a bag (frozen water) I had my iPod touch in the bag, after my softball game, I took out my iPod, and the screen was completely white. I restarted it, (or attempted to) but it wouldn't turn on. I eventually got a screen to pop up with nothing but a battery (a low battery) With a lightning bolt and I cant remember what else. I got it to actually turn on once, but then it wouldn't play music. (What's the point of an iPod without music?) And so now I'm back to being stuck with an iPod Touch that doesn't turn on. P.S. I've already tried plugging it into a house outlet, and into my computer. iTunes detected it, but said it was in recovery mode, and the info was off. (They said it was an iPhone, had no GB's for Videos, Music, ect.) I tried restoring, hasn't worked for me. I don't know what else to do. And please dont suggest getting it repaired at the store. I found my old 30gig ipod video today. I stopped using it because the screen cracked or broke, and Apple would not replace it free of cost becasue of that. That happened about 3 years ago, and now I am looking at repairing it. I called my local apple store and they told me it would cost $129 to get it fixed or whatever he meant by that. I bought an ipod video 2 & a half years ago in dixans and bought a 3 year coverplan policy with it. It started giving me problems a while ago(the data spontaniously disappeared off it when the battery went dead, froze up when disconnected from usb...) I took it into the store and it was sent off for repair. I collected it on Yesterdayand the repair note said the it was functioning fine and nothing had been done to it. This morning I disconnected it from the charger and lo and behold the screen had frozen and the music I had spent 2 hours loading onto it last night was gone. I went back into store and they said they can send it off again. Do I have any rights to a replacement in this case? Can anyone offer any advice on what my rights as a consumer are here? I learned how to disassemble and reassemble iPods and now I want to know where to get parts for cheap for my Video iPod. I would like someone with any knowledge of repairing iPods to help, that way I can diagnose the problem of my iPod before I purchase the parts. My iPod is 3 years old and it's starting to act up. These are the following problems: -It freezes a lot -The main volume on the iPod sets itself to silent and I have to set the volume multiple times before it finally sets to the normal volume. -After a few days the main menu on my iPod has only the "settings" option and the brightness is low. Hey everybody! So I have read so many reviews about Macbooks, seen tons of videos etc etc, I was really close to actually buying a macbook yesterday but then I started reading negative things about mac and I want to know how true it is! I heard Macbook tend to crack easily and get yellow stains all over it also that to update your software or anything in your mac it will be expensive and the same thing when it comes to hardware! it is expensive I also heard that Macs are not all compatible with most games, you could always install windows but they will not all run perfectly (I'm not a gamer but I would like to have at least a game there) and well I have heard so much about limitations in a mac and that if you mac messes up it will be expensive to repair it! I also heard there are already viruses for macbooks that it is not true that they are 100% safe So now I'm hesitating a lot! because I dont want a computer that limitates me.. I really hated that about my ipod touch, I thought it was fancy and everything but I hated it that I could not do anything without itunes and I couldnt use it as a Flashdrive and I couldnt costumize it without haveing to jailbreak it! you know? so I dont like limitations when it comes to pc ... I wanna be free to install anything and do anything.. also, I have 1000 dollars to spend on my next laptop.. but I do not want to spend more after I buy it.. so I know with Windows it will be cheaper to buy new software or even update it to vista 7 .. it will be free.. sooo I want to know if mac can be really that expensive... I was backing up my computer to send it in for repairs. I copied my iTunes library to a disk from its location in the Music folder. Later, I opened my iTunes and found it was empty. I transferred the purchases from my iPod, but since not all of my music is purchased, all of my other music as well as podcasts and videos are now gone. My ipod is a 5th Gen, 80 Gig Video. I usually leave my ipod connected to my PC overnight all the time, and last night, my computer rebooted itself and apparently when i found it this morning, my ipod entire ipod library was gone. However, my podcasts, photos, ipod games and saves are all still intact, along with all the files i manually put on my ipod as a external hard drive. All of those things directly sync with my PC. My songs, however, i do not have a backup for at all. It seems like my ipod somehow restored itself? I tried using a third-party software to help recover my lost files and it did find them all, yet it is requesting 40$ purchase for the files to be saved. I'm not confident giving my money to them just yet and especially i am hoping to recover my songs metadata and playlists. Is it possible to either send it in to Apple if they can fix it or if there is a possible way where i can bring my ipod to a certain restore point (48 hours ago). Please please help, i lost a signficent part of life, my music library w. 5,000 songs. I am willing to pay for a repair, if someone can help me out. more

Okay, I have a 5G 80GB iPod Classic that's about 5 months old (Mac user, OSX Leopard 10.5.7). It's been working really well until recently when I restored it to the most recent Windows format so it could be shown on both the Mac and Windows interfaces. Now whenever I sync the iPod to my library, the iPod starts adding files, until a certain point (i.e. Song 2,456) and just freezes on that file, with a constant number of space left (i.e. 68.4 GB left). I also noticed that when I add videos in the same fashion, the "available space" number (i.e. the same 68.4 GB left) is always the same. I restored the iPod many times (back to Mac format) and used Disk Utility to repair/erase the disk, but it keeps freezing at that one point and never goes on whenever I restart syncing it. I have the latest iTunes firmware too. I kind of think there's something wrong with the hard drive at that certain space which causes no further files to be put on. Anybody else have this problem? Is there a way I can solve this problem by checking the hard drive (when I had a previous iPod, the genius bar at Apple person used this method to check the hard drive and determined it was fried and completely replaced it)? It's not under warranty anymore, so I can't take it back. Is there another solution? Please help!~ :] Thanks!!! >w< more

PLEASE NOTE I know this is a re-post, but you all know how answers works, as soon as your question dissapears from the main "answer" page you never get any answers, and this situation is urgent, Ok, I originally used this computer with iTunes to initially sync my music and videos to my new iPod touch 2nd gen when I bought it in December, while my computer was being repaired. When my computer was repaired, I transferred the music from this computer to mine, and used it until my computer's hard drive was corrupted recently. i had fairly recently backed up my music, so nothing was lost, and i still had all the music/videos on my ipod. However, yesterday I wanted to add an album of mine to my iPod, so, I hooked it up to this computer (not needing to worry about wiping because i set both machines never to automatically sync content) and added the album to itunes, then to my iPod. No problem. But today, when i wanted to do a similar thing a problem occured. I hooked up the iPod to iTunes, and it auto-synced as it always does , and went to the iPod summary page, as always, but I was alarmed when the memory summary showed 1.3 GBs of apps (which is normal) and around 28GB of files deemed "other", with no music or video files showing. I then unplugged my iPod, and checked it to find that all but two of my music files (interestingly the ones i had purchased rom the iPod itself) and ALL of my video files gone. They are clearly still there, but are registering as "other" files. Also, i cannot join my home wifi network. This has nothing to do with the recent 3.0 update either, as i have not installed it ( I resent paying £6 for a software update mainly for iPhone users) Does anyone have any idea what is going on? How can i solve this problem? I can't just restore the files from the backup because: a) with the files still there, but registering as "other" there is not enough space on the iPod b) i'm not permitted to put the files back on this computer so, unless someone can fix this, i'm without my iPod until i get a new computer. Resolved Question: I have an older IPOD 30 gig video models.?

I always plug it into my car stereo using a standard dual 3.55 ml cord. I kept thinking the cord was going bad cause it would go in and out sound-wise. I replaced the cord and now it appears that the problem is the input on the top of the IPOD. Is there any easy way to clean or repair the input connector on the top of the Ipod? Thanks more

Resolved Question: ALOT Dead Ipod Touch Pixels On Jail Broken Ipod (Touch)?

I went on a trip and somehow my jailbroken ipod touch is missing around 50 broken black pixels. What do I do. It was not my fault it was some little kids fault and im mad because i spent like 400 dollars on it plus like 300 dollars on the videos and music. What can I do so there is no possible way the app store will ever know I jailbroke it. I can reset it but my Friend saw I hacked it and sent me a email about it can they acces my emails if i delete them and will they be able to tell I jailbroke it. I would also take it to like geek squad at bestbuy if they could fix it. Could they do all that stuff to though. And if im totally messed up is there anywhere that would repair it for a small fee and doesn't care what happened to it (i would still reset and delete the emails though). more

Resolved Question: Ipod Audio not working, need help?

Basically, everything on my ipod works (still charges, plays videos & songs, etc) except the audio. A song will still play through but there's no sound at all. It started when i left it out in the sun in my car. When i plugged it into the radio or AUV connection thing that lets you play your ipod in the car, it played through a few songs (sound was fine) then it started making this scratchy noise and the audio just shut off. It doesn't work with headphones either. I tried the thing where you put the Ipod in the freezer for awhile but it only works temporarily. I was wondering if anyone knew any methods that could permanently repair the Ipod. more

Voting Question: Why does my Ipod Classic (Video) 80GB have strange pixel lines?

My screen on my Ipod Classic (Video) 80GB that I bought about a year ago has strange lines on a bit of it. Most of the lines are horizontal but there are a few pixels in between them that seem to be problematic as well. These lines appear black when they are supposed to be white and light gray when they are supposed to be gray. However, when I turn of the backlight, they mostly disappear. Another strange thing that I noticed is that one of the lines used to be a few pixels long, and has grown steadily each day, and now it almost extends across the entire screen. The other ones have largely remained the same and seem to be mostly in the bottom right corner. I have tried reseting the ipod with no luck. Clearly, the problem isn't something like sun damage or being struck hard against something because one of the lines has steadily grown over the past few days with no exposure to either of these. In fact, it has been in a rubber casing for most of its life and has been in a padded case outside of that for the last few days. This is very frustrating; I've tried to take care of my Ipod as much as possible and now this. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could fix this problem without getting it repaired/replaced for undoubtedly loads of money? more
