I've always been under the impression that Mac is the be-all/end-all for graphic design. But I've also heard that it's just a matter of personal preference. Can someone who's had experience with both Mac and PC design platforms tell me which one is better based on your personal preferences? And if one is better, would you discredit the other? I don't really care either way. If it's not that crucial for me to get a Mac, I won't get one. I already have a Dell Inspiron 8200, so I would rather just get Adobe Creative Suite 4 for that platform. moreVoting Question: Best way to dupe old laptop HD contents to new HD?
I have a really old laptop - a Dell Inspiron 8200. I want to replace the hard drive, preferably by duping the current drive to a new one and thereby keeping the programs, drivers, OS, etc. The HD has an ATA-100 (not SATA) interface. I tried 2 methods of copying the HD, both unsuccessful: the Apricorn EZ Gig HD upgrade kit and a SATA to USB cable system (which includes an IDE/ATA adapter). In both cases, the laptop recognized that there was a new USB device attached, but failed to recoginze that device as a drive - and therefore I was unable to dupe the old drive to the new drive. Can anyone suggest a different way to go about this? Like, for example, is there a way to make an image of the old HD and install it to the new drive via the DVD-Rom drive or my existing external drive? The "new" drive is a Seagate Momentus 5400.3 (which has been sitting around my house for over a year while waiting for me to get around to this project). Or is there another device that might facilitate this? Any help is appreciated. thanks. moreResolved Question: How would I cut down usage of system resources?
Hello, I am a minimalist and I'm trying to cut down even more processes/memory consumption on Windows XP Pro (SP 3). I am a little stumped on what to do. My processes add up to about 46MB, my commit charge is somewhere around 70MB (if I exclude process explorer), and Physical Memory usage is about 130MB. Check out my screen shot: http://imgur.com/ht059.png Where does all the extra memory consumption come from, if my processes only add up to 46MB? How do I cut that down? How do I cut down the memory usage of svchost.exe and winlogon.exe? My ultimate goal is to get my system to boot up WinXP to log on screen in under 20 sec and to shut down in under 10 seconds (my friend said he got his to shut down in 5 sec). If you can answer some of or all of my questions or contribute to my ultimate goal, that would be awesome If it matters at all, my system is a laptop with the following specs: Dell Inspiron 8200 Pentium 4 M @ 2.4 GHz (400MHz FSB, 512KB L2 Cache) 512MB PC2100 DDR RAM (266MHz, 2x 256MB) 60GB Hard Drive (5200 RPM) ATi Radeon Mobility 9000, 64MB If you need anymore details, feel free to email me via the link on my profile. moreVoting Question: My Dell Inspiron 8200 Needs A Ethernet Controller?

I have a Dell Inspiron 8200 and it currently has 512 MB DDR RAM (PC 2100). I wanted to upgrade to 1 GB of RAM, however I want faster RAM as well. I wanted to upgrade to about PC-2700, or perhaps PC-3200, both are DDR. The specs don't state max speed supported, just size and type. I'm wondering if that would be possible and if so would my laptop be able to take advantage of the faster speeds, or if I should just stick with PC-2100? specs are here http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/ins8200/en/sm_en/specs.htm#1103124 OPTIONAL QUESTION: It's similar to the previous one: My desktop says it supports up to PC2 4200, however I was wondering if would take advantage of PC2-5300 or faster DDR2 speeds? moreVoting Question: laptop problem please help?

Alright. So, I recently pre ordered a game for my PC, The Sims 3..but since then, the computer I was going to install it on..kind of crashed. Damn Dell computers..My laptop ad the Sims 2 installed on. was a Dell Inspiron 1501, it wouldn't play it properly..so I don't know if it will work. I have a desktop , but I'm not sure it will play the game. The system specs for the game list off a bunch of supported graphic cards. My computer has um..Integrated NVIDIA GeForce 8200..I don't know much about computers, but that's what it says it has. The supported are NVIDIA GeForce series FX 5900, FX 5950 6200, 6500, 6600, 6800 7200, 7300, 7600, 7800, 7900, 7950 8400, 8500, 8600, 8800 9300, 9400, 9500, 9600, 9800 G100, GT 120, GT 130, GTS 150 GTS 250, GTX 260, GTX 280, GTX 285, GTX 295 And what I have isn't listed there. So, my question is, what are the chances of it working properly? If not is there something I can do, or buy so it will run the game? It seems a shame to have the game that I can do nothing with..The reason I worry is like I said, I have the Dell computer, and the fact that it won't play it makes me worry, I'm out close to a hundred dollars, and if it runs like the last one, I won't be able to play it at all, cause I can't on my Dell.. moreResolved Question: Confused about ram...........?

i see a lot of people have the same problem I have. I have read 30 or 40 post on the net and none have fixed the problem. Ok here it is. Equipment is laptop dell, inspiron 8200, XP Home, SP2. Wireless card Linksys, instant wireless Network PC Card ver.3, model No: WPC11 ver.3. Router also Linksys, wireless G 2.4GHz. History I have 3 computers running. #1, Is a Desktop hard wired to the router running XP Home. #2 is a desktop with a Linksys wireless adapter running XP Home as well. #3 is a laptop with a built in wireless card running vista, All 3 work great and I have never had a problem with any of them. Now my brother just moved back and his son has the dell 8200 and I cannot get it to work. The computer and the card works fine, it sees my wireless network when I click on it, it says windows is unable to connect to the selected network. The network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again. But I have 5 full bars and it’s still there. But some of my Neighbors show up on the list and if I click on them it then does what its suppose to and ask for the password. So what I have done next is gone to the advanced steps and added my SSID and my network authentication is set to shared and data is set to WEP and when I put my network key in it says: the network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters. I read one post that said to just put the first 5 symbols in the network key and I did and it takes it but, when I try to connect it says the network may no longer be in range. Please refresh the list of available networks, and try to connect again (again). So I switch the network authentication to open and disabled the data encryption and then try to connect and same thing. What’s going on? Please help. And keep it as simple as you can for me and the other 5 or 6 thousand other people that seem to be having the same problem. Thank you for any and all your help. P.S. if you need any more info from me just ask.drivers are up to date. network key is 100%. with the wep it wont take the network key. thats why i need helpsorry josh moreResolved Question: DELL inspiron 8200 laptop motherboard not working?

Not even ctrl/alt/delete works....had to is the on/off button. Got that taken care of but unfortunately no internet connection. Finally got the wireless internet connection (or so I thought) but shut the computer down as it was getting late. The next evening she turned the computer back on and still no connection. So I spent roughly 7+ hours on the phone with 3 different Dell people doing a remote access only 2 be told by the 3 individuals I needed a new router. I did buy a new router after deal with the first person and still it would not work. The wireless card that was factory installed by Dell could see my router, would try to connect but it kept saying it can't connect. It saw some other connections but they were all secure (I've got to call my next door neighbor and get their info so I can see if it would connect but haven't done that yet). My old router is a Linksys WRT54G, the new one I bought is a Linksys WRT54G2. It was connected to my Dell desktop (Dimension 8200). A friend of mine who deals with computers, networks, etc. for a living had me bring my laptop & the old router to work. He stopped by, looked at it, did some clicking and basically told me he told the computer to ignore any of the new Linksys info from my install for the newer router. Then he plugged in the old router, got a signal, got the laptop to find it and stay connected, then he said it should connect. NOPE! I've reset the router, unplugged everything from it as well as completely disconnect the modem (got it from Comcast, I have Comcast internet), and I disconnect all of this from the desktop as well, turned off both the laptop & desktop and let it sit for a while before reconnecting everything (per my friends instructions since he was shocked the the laptop would not connect) and still it won't connect....tries to but it can't. The wireless card in the laptop & the software it's using to connect is Intel Pro/Wireless. I've uninstalled McAfee from the laptop & it still won't connect. I've done a system restore on the laptop to dates prior to the computer freezing and still nothing - plus it keeps reinstalling all programs I uninstalled (McAfee and other programs that my daughter doesn't need or use anymore so I was trying to free up some space) - I'm not sure why it keeps putting them back on so that's another issued. So my issue is trying get the wireless connection in the laptop to connect & stay connected to my desktop & Linksys router, and another question is why are my programs being reinstalled after I deleted them and then do a system restore? I've never had that happen before on my desktop, but the laptop keeps putting the programs back on when I don't want them. Any ideas??? Any suggestions??? Help!!!! I'm ready to shoot both of these computers but I can't buy new ones (the desk top is roughly 7 years old, the laptop is just over 4 years old and still has a hardware warranty until Dec 2010 but Dell is no help in this issue, or at least not the people I get stuck talking to in India. Can't seem to get connected to any technician in the U.S.). Thanks so much for any help, advise, suggestion, etc!! I'm going nuts!!! :o)Laila - unfortunately your link was not informative or helpful. I have a INSPIRON 8200 DELL laptop. I've had it for about 2 years, not sure how old it is. I've never had any problems with it either. It beeps every couple minutes but it's not continous. Sometimes it is and sometimes it isn't. When I first turn the computer on it starts beeping every couple seconds. Once I'm on the computer, it's fine. If I leave the computer on while not doing anything, it starts beeping every couple minutes. A friend told me it was the battery but I can assure you it's not. My battery life is still at 100% and it has nothing to do with the battery. What could this be from and why does it beep? Please help!!! moreResolved Question: Looking for a new laptop for basic internet usage and basic home computer work. Any suggestions?

My Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop was working fine. Today I closed the lid for a while, as I've done many times, but this time when I went back to it a short while later it had powered off. The batteries both still had lots of juice. I powered it back on, and Windows was starting, but then it powered off again. And now, it won't power on at all. Now nothing happens when I press the power button. No light goes on, no sound. I tried other batteries with full charges, same problem. I tried plugging it in with the AC adapter, same problem. I tried removing the panel with the power button, and cleaning the power button contacts. That didn't help either. I bought it used, so I can't get help from Dell. I bought it over a year ago and it's been working fine, so I can't go back to the seller. What can I do to get it working again? Thanks, GregMike J: I tried your advice of holding down the power button for a while. I held it down for a full minute. I can now power up if I have BOTH the ac adapter AND a battery connected. But I if I try with only the AC adapter or only a battery, I get the same problem as before -- no lights, no sound. Also, if I start booting up with both the AC adapter and a battery, and then remove one or the other, it powers down. It doesn't matter whether I remove the AC adapter or the battery, and it also doesn't matter which bay the battery is in. In all cases, it only stays powered on if it has the AC adapter AND a battery. I need to be able to use it on battery power only. Any suggestions? moreResolved Question: help with me with a laptop its a dell inspiron 8200 do i need a network card , i just got a wireless router & ?
