Discount Laptop Computers Questions asked

Open Question: How much does the Graphics card on a laptop affect watching video or editing video?

I want to buy a new laptop, which i am planning to use for watching video and also doing video editing (possibly hd video editing - using sony vegas). I know my fair share about computers, but i'm no expert. I know that i want a good processor and at least 3gb of RAM so that video editing should operate smoothly. However, i just need to know if buying a laptop with a better graphics card will affect how the video looks in any significant way. I am not considering playing games on the laptop (i have a desktop pc for that, but it is shared with the rest of my family). Now don't go thinking that i mean i want GeForce 280 GTX or anything like that; as i said it's not a gaming laptop that i want. In fact, quite the opposite, i'm stuck between two laptops with rather low-end graphics (one of them at least). They are both £479 Dells (as my dad can get a discount on these because of his job), but one has a better processor whilst the other has a slightly better graphics card. The rest of the specs are pretty similar. Laptop 1: Dell Inspiron 1564 - N0056407: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=NRS&l=en&oc=N0056407&rbc=N0056407&s=dhs Intel core i5 processor <<< good for video editing? 3gb ram 15.6" HD (1366x768) resolution Intel GMA 4500 HD intergrated graphics <<< bad graphics card..? Laptop 2: Dell Studio 15 - N0055802: http://configure.euro.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?b=&c=uk&cs=ukdhs1&kc=HDP&l=en&m_30=321942&oc=N0055802&rbc=N0055802&s=dhs Intel core i3 processor <<< not as good as the inspiron's 3gb ram 15.6" HD (1366x768) resolution 512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570 Graphics Card <<< better graphics card So basically it's a simple choice between a faster processor or better graphics. I just need someone who knows what they're talking about to tell me which is more important for watching and editing video. Just for the record i think that the Studio 15 is much better looking... =) more

Voting Question: to the party saying "no" ......care to look into the mirror?

Why cyberspace isn’t, and will never be, nirvana By Clifford Stoll | NEWSWEEK From the magazine issue dated Feb 27, 1995 After two decades online, I’m perplexed. It’s not that I haven’t had a gas of a good time on the Internet. I’ve met great people and even caught a hacker or two. But today, I’m uneasy about this most trendy and oversold community. Visionaries see a future of telecommuting workers, interactive libraries and multimedia classrooms. They speak of electronic town meetings and virtual communities. Commerce and business will shift from offices and malls to networks and modems. And the freedom of digital networks will make government more democratic. Baloney. Do our computer pundits lack all common sense? The truth in no online database will replace your daily newspaper, no CD-ROM can take the place of a competent teacher and no computer network will change the way government works. Consider today’s online world. The Usenet, a worldwide bulletin board, allows anyone to post messages across the nation. Your word gets out, leapfrogging editors and publishers. Every voice can be heard cheaply and instantly. The result? Every voice is heard. The cacophany more closely resembles citizens band radio, complete with handles, harrasment, and anonymous threats. When most everyone shouts, few listen. How about electronic publishing? Try reading a book on disc. At best, it’s an unpleasant chore: the myopic glow of a clunky computer replaces the friendly pages of a book. And you can’t tote that laptop to the beach. Yet Nicholas Negroponte, director of the MIT Media Lab, predicts that we’ll soon buy books and newspapers straight over the Intenet. Uh, sure. What the Internet hucksters won’t tell you is tht the Internet is one big ocean of unedited data, without any pretense of completeness. Lacking editors, reviewers or critics, the Internet has become a wasteland of unfiltered data. You don’t know what to ignore and what’s worth reading. Logged onto the World Wide Web, I hunt for the date of the Battle of Trafalgar. Hundreds of files show up, and it takes 15 minutes to unravel them–one’s a biography written by an eighth grader, the second is a computer game that doesn’t work and the third is an image of a London monument. None answers my question, and my search is periodically interrupted by messages like, “Too many connectios, try again later.” Won’t the Internet be useful in governing? Internet addicts clamor for government reports. But when Andy Spano ran for county executive in Westchester County, N.Y., he put every press release and position paper onto a bulletin board. In that affluent county, with plenty of computer companies, how many voters logged in? Fewer than 30. Not a good omen. Point and click: Then there are those pushing computers into schools. We’re told that multimedia will make schoolwork easy and fun. Students will happily learn from animated characters while taught by expertly tailored software.Who needs teachers when you’ve got computer-aided education? Bah. These expensive toys are difficult to use in classrooms and require extensive teacher training. Sure, kids love videogames–but think of your own experience: can you recall even one educational filmstrip of decades past? I’ll bet you remember the two or three great teachers who made a difference in your life. Then there’s cyberbusiness. We’re promised instant catalog shopping–just point and click for great deals. We’ll order airline tickets over the network, make restaurant reservations and negotiate sales contracts. Stores will become obselete. So how come my local mall does more business in an afternoon than the entire Internet handles in a month? Even if there were a trustworthy way to send money over the Internet–which there isn’t–the network is missing a most essential ingredient of capitalism: salespeople. What’s missing from this electronic wonderland? Human contact. Discount the fawning techno-burble about virtual communities. Computers and networks isolate us from one another. A network chat line is a limp substitute for meeting friends over coffee. No interactive multimedia display comes close to the excitement of a live concert. And who’d prefer cybersex to the real thing? While the Internet beckons brightly, seductively flashing an icon of knowledge-as-power, this nonplace lures us to surrender our time on earth. A poor substitute it is, this virtual reality where frustration is legion and where–in the holy names of Education and Progress–important aspects of human interactions are relentlessly devalued. Resolved Question: where can I get the best deal on buying 6 computers and other electronics at the same time? Need discount!?

I am most likely gonna do with a DELL but when I spoke to their sales person they said that their prices were already so cheap that they wont discount. I assume they work on commission and so they dont want to offer any specials. This is what I am looking for. 1. a basic desktop 2. about $2000 gaming lap computer 3. three netbooks with cams 4. a laptop that would be good for photo editing nad also Facebook games. 5. a digital camera with at least a 8x zoom. prefer Nikon 6. a video camera that can hook to laptop for editing and uploads. We are talking thousands of dollars. I already tried Best Buy and they said they dont give discounts. I think they are lying. I have known people to get discounts from Circuit City but the closest one closed and now the next closest is an hour and a half away. Suggestions? I was told not to buy retail but to buy from the dealer to get the best deal/ What do you think?ok wow. why do i deserve a discount? because other people have gotten them. Mostly I hear about Circuit City. And you dont know until you ask. And because Dave Ramsey told me tothese are for five different people. i won the lottery but i still want to get the best deal i can more

Resolved Question: Do you think I should purchase the m11x based on my needs?

I really know nothing about computer parts, and I have been reading as much as I could about the m11x to see if it is what I want, and these are the issues that are still stumping me. 1) I would really love to play the newest games to come out on my computer for at least the next 6 years or so at medium settings with 40ish fps and was wondering if I could achieve that with this setup I currently have planned: the Intel® Core™2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz (3MB Cache), 4GB Dual Channel DDR3 at 800MHz, and the 500GB SATAII 7,200RPM. This comes to about 1069$ with my student discount. 2) Also, is the CPU in the m11x worse than my core 2 duo T5750 @ 2.00 ghz. I am asking this because I do not know much about computer parts, I'm assuming the m11x's is worse because less ghz means slower (at least what I was led to believe). But I find this hard to believe because I purchased my laptop almost two years ago, I would think that the processor technology would be at the point where even an 11" laptop would have a far stronger CPU than my current Toshiba satellite-A305 that I got for about 800$. 3) Also, will the relatively old CPU on the m11x ever hinder the notebooks ability to play games in the future, as it will not meet minimum requirements? I have been reading a lot about the C2Duo vs the new i3,i5,i7 series, and was not entirely sure if it would be worth waiting for the m11x to have built in nethalem if all I really care about is gaming (no video editing). 4) Also, will the fact that this notebook is constructed with plastic ever cause the computer to warp? I have heard about prior issues like this in plastic builds, and more specifically alienware computers warping their shapes. 5) And, one final note, will the price of the new nethalem processors quickly drop, maybe so much so that if I wait until April, I could get the m11x with an i3 for the same price as I am paying now? (~1069$) 6) If i decide to buy the current setup I have planned, will I be able to easily upgrade my CPU to the nethalem series? How much will that usually cost, if I have alienware do it, without considering the price of the processor. 7) Is it risky for me to buy the first generation of m11x as there may be inherent problems in the design? Is this common for first generation computers, I know it's common for consoles (i.e. red ring of death). Please leave any insight you may have on these issues. Thanks! more

Resolved Question: Which should I get my son: Mac or PC?

I have a son in 6th grade and his school is requiring for the students to have laptop computers for their 7th grade year. My son wants a MacBook Pro (13", 2.26Ghz, 4GB RAM, 250GB HDD), but I want to get him a Dell Inspiron 14. With the difference in price, which should I get him? The Mac has more bells and whistles and the build quality probably is better, but the PC is just what he needs. Which should I go with? Here are the specs and prices of both computers: 13" MacBook Pro (with Apple Education Discount): 4GB RAM 2.26Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 250GB Hard Drive iWork '09 preinstalled Microsoft Office Mac 2008 $1,404.95 Dell Inspiron 14: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit 4GB RAM 2.20Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor 1.3 Mega Pixel Webcam 250GB Hard Drive $754 more

Resolved Question: Dell Laptop What is right for me?

My computer is very slow and has over 90% free space on it, so I'm looking into buying a laptop. I'm looking into buying a Dell as I can get a discount going through my company. I have a lot of pictures, music and home video's that I edit. I also take classes online and will be depending on the computer for my school work. I want something that is fast and can handle the amount of pictures, music and videos that I have. What Dell Laptops would suit these needs? I've looked at the Inspirion and the Studio 15. Anything would be helpful! Looking at Laptops is a foreign language to me! more

Resolved Question: How do I get my teacher discount from Dell?

I'm buying a dell laptop and I've heard that as a teacher, I can get a 7% discount. How do I actually get this? I've customized my computer and everything and it's in the cart and ready to buy. Where on the dell website do I prove I'm a teacher? more

Resolved Question: Am i able to get the education tax rebate?

Ok, Well, i am just wondering. I am a high school student that is wanting to buy a laptop. The education tax rebate for high school students allows my parents to get 50% of $1500 to be rebated once a year. This $1500 has to be spent on things such as computers and text books. I am wanting to take advantage of this to buy a new computer. I am wanting to buy a Mac and my question is, could i give my sister the money to buy it online taking advantage of the education discount and free ipod offer and still get my mum to get the tax rebate? I do not know how the government would know that it was bought discounted or anything else. So yeah, thats the question. Hopefully someone will have an idea about what i am able to do. more

Voting Question: Can Someone Help Me Interpret This Random Dream?

I start off in a bedroom hanging out with my Cousin, Char and her boyfriend, Peaver, and our friend Kelsey and her boyfriend, Bubs. (Weird names. I know. They're Nicknames) Peaver and Bubs are sitting on the vanity stool to the left bottom corner of the bed, Char's standing next to Peaver, Kelsey's sitting on the bed and I'm sitting on the floor on a pillow parallel to the bed. My boyfriend, Shane, isn't there for some reason. Char starts complaining about how she wants to do nice things. Fancy things. Then Kesley says "yeah me too". Char states that Kelsey is sick of sitting on the bed and wants to sit in a nice chair. I start to realize how bad my voice is getting (I'm losing it now in real life). Then I turn around, still sitting on the pillow and there's a shopping mall connected to the room behind the bed that I didn't notice before. Then my old hairdresser Dana, (who I loved! But my mom made me ditch for my cousin who gives us a discount), starts to wave at me. She's only about 5 feet away. I wave back, get up and ask her if she knows any good products to help my throat out a bit. She says that she'll ask a co-worker for me. We go to her salon and theirs a snooty looking woman sitting on a high stool in front of a computer (but facing away) and looking into a small mirror. Dana asks her and she says "Down the Isle, $11" I tell her it's scratchy and I can barely talk. She says "$5 more." So we look at all of the products, theirs a Clean N' Clear product. A fancy looking Laptop and some more random too-toxic-to-drink looking products. Then we stop at a stand where their are pre-heated mini straighteners and Dana starts to straighten my hair and asks me to go to a movie that weekend. I think "Should I go with Dana, or my friend, Kourtney, who asked me earlier the week?" I tell Dana, "Sure." Then I go to a warehouse with my Cousin, Steph. My current hairdresser. She starts to talk about water-proof Puma socks. I say "They're awesome. Comfy and work great!" She agrees but says they're hard to find. Then we're walking out of the store and she said that all her co-workers think I work with her and give me weird looks. I look in a mirror and i look tall and gorgeous and bronzed, the opposite of my current appearance. Then I take my big coat off and I'm wearing a short, silky, light green dress that looks amazing on the body I have in this dream. I walk away from the mirror, carrying my big coat and follow Steph out of the warehouse. She walks around the bed frames and I walk over them. I feel some air on my bum and I pull down the hem a bit, holding it in place until, we're out of the warehouse. Then we're walking back into the mall and Steph asks me to go to a movie the weekend. I think whether I should go with Kourtney or Dana or Steph. I tell Steph "Sure." Then I end up in a small cave in a sleeping bag with Steph, A guy who looks like my dad (he works away) and a young unfamiliar woman. The man who looks similar to my dad states how I'm "Art's daughter, definitely" (Art[thur] is my dad's name). Then a door opens when we all get out of the sleeping bag and white water rushes in. Everyone is talking about how excited they are. The man who looks like my dad and the unfamiliar woman both get on a raft and rush out of the cave. Steph gets ready to go but can't. The water carries us out and we need to grab hold of rocks until it calms down. Then we go back to the cave. And the man and woman are there again. They go white water rafting. Steph gets ready. The water carries us, we grab hold of rocks until the water is calm, and we end up in the cave again. I'm horrified to do this by the way. This repeats several times. Then I ask what's so exciting about this. Somehow I can see outside of the cave and I'm looking down over a waterfall with Steph and in the water below I see a giant, red, Chinese-dragon, looking creature swerving and swimming the the water, baring it's teeth, it's mouth fully open. It jumps and tries to get us a few times. We scream and I'm more terrified then I was before. Then we're in the cave again and everyone else is getting ready to go and on their raft and I say "I am NOT doing this. Can that thing eat you? Kill you?" They all tell me yes. The water comes but none of them go. I wonder why and look at the door. It's closed. They all blame me, in a friendly way. I tell them I didn't close it, no one believes me. I get sooky and keep telling them how I didn't do it and still, no one believes me. Then We're all in a room. Char, Peaver, Kelsey, Bubs, Dana, Steph, the man who looks like my dad, the unfamiliar woman and Me. We're all sitting around a coffee table, with gifts all around. Everyone wants me to open mine first. So I do. I get books from almost everyone. (I love to read) And the last one has a mini-loofah as a bookmark on a page in the book I got from Steph. The first sentence on the bookmarked page says "White Water Rafting? No way. I'm not gettingWow, that's funny. Actually. I had this dream this morning. I woke up for school, ate breakfast and my mom told me it was a school day. So I went back to sleep. Then I dreamt this. That was towards carlos o. more

Voting Question: Choosing a Dell computer?

Resolved Question: What is the best way to get a discount on a Mac laptop that is still under warranty?

I'm ready to have a good, reliable laptop with which I may travel easily. I go to Umass Boston and I know there is a student discount but I assume there has to be some other ways to get discounts on laptops through computer drives or other companies, websites, orgs, coupons, etc? I don't mind something refurbished, display models or unpopular styles, colors, etc. I just need for it to be under the full warranty which allows you to bring the laptop to the Apple store for services and repairs. more

Voting Question: Laptop warranty.....?

My laptop is old, but it still has the warranty where you can send it in and get it fixed. But, it has tons of problems. For example: Pink screen after startup (which means the video card is failing I think?) The socket in the back where the charger is plugged is loose, so if it's wiggled or moved in a certain way (if the laptop is lifted up), the computer shuts down. ---It shuts down because the battery is at 4% and will no longer charge. As soon as I uplug the charger it'll shut off. Gotta leave the charger in at all times. The screen is wobbly...I have to have it at a certain angle or else it will go black. It'll flicker or just completely go black. I have to have my laptop on an angle or else I can't see anything. There is barely any memory left and everything runs slowly. I also get runtime errors that pop up every 5 minutes (literally) and I have no idea what those are or why they're popping up so frequently. So...will they likely fix these problems (and others that it probably has)? Will they give me a new one? A discount to get a new one? Nothing at all? Judging by the problems it has, what do you think it'll do?The laptop's 3 years old. I take good care of it. I have antivirus programs installed. I've never dropped it. Rarely do I take it anywhere. I mainly only use it for games. more

Resolved Question: Is $200 worth it for an upgrade to aluminum? (MACBOOK)?

Hi, I'm in 11th grade and I'm trying to buy a Mac laptop that I plan to use for college also. It will be my first Mac computer, but I have experience using them. A couple of weeks ago, my mom bought be the new improved 13-inch white Macbook (released fall 2009) for $999 with a student discount. It was my birthday present, and I was really happy but kind of disappointed because I thought I wanted the aluminum. When I told my mom this, she said that the lady at Best Buy convinced her that the improved white Macbook had the EXACT same features as the 13-inch aluminum Macbook Pro and that in effect she would be paying $200 more for just aluminum. It's a compelling argument, but part of me still likes the aesthetics of the Macbook Pro because it is matte and not glossy and silver/black versus white (which seems like it will get dirty and smudged). SO my question for you is: is $200 worth it to upgrade to an aluminum Macbook when it is essentially excatly the same as the white one? OR should I just keep the good deal I'm getting? more

Resolved Question: Where do you think I could get the best deal on a new laptop computer using a student discount?

I'm good with computers so I know what I need but I'm just wondering where the best discounts would be so I can shop around. I've already checked out HP/Compaq and Dell and with that I'm leaning towards HP but I was curious if anyone else has any ideas... more

The HP has 1gig more RAM, better on board graphics, bigger hard drive, and I think a better wireless card? Can some of you experts check out those 2 computers and pick me the winner? more

Resolved Question: Would Alienware, subsidary of Dell, qualify for discount?

My mom works for a law firm that represents dell. If I buy a computer through her we can get a 10-15 % discount for dell computers. I was thinking about getting a new laptop mostly for games and HD movies so i was looking at Alien Ware, but i didnt know if that would qualify for the discount. Course to get the final answer I would probably have to look into the terms of the discount but just as a guess, what do you think? more

Resolved Question: Any good holiday discounts on good computers?

Resolved Question: Help with paying less for a macbook pro?

I'm a college student who just broke her first 13-inch brand-new Mac, and is looking to replace it. I need my own computer to do work, write papers, etc. And apparently, spilling water on your Macbook isn't covered by the Apple warranty. The family budget was spent on the first Macbook, so I'm trying to bring the cost down as much as possible. If I don't, I have to spend my tuition money. I've got the education discount, a Disney company discount, and a $100 printer I might be able to sell...but that's the brunt of my strategy for a new Mac. I looked online, but Amazon etc. only sells them for about $200 less, max. If I get a refurbished laptop from Apple, does the student discount still apply? Can I combine discounts? Does anyone have any other ideas as to how I can bring the cost down or other things I could do? more

Resolved Question: What can I do legally about this false advertisement?

On Thanksgiving night, I went to the Walmart at 11 p.m. to get in line to purchase the HP Laptop for $298 for the Black Friday Special. I was first in line and waited for 6 hours to make my pruchase. At 5:00 a.m. I was told that they could not find any of the computers and we were to give them our names and numbers and they would call us when they were able to locate the laptops. I called back around 12:00 p.m. and was told that they did not have them and if they found out that the computers were not delivered to their location I could not get it at the discounted price even though I was first in line to purchase one. I am upset and disappointed by the lack of organization of this event. What can I do legally to make sure that I get a $298 HP or another compatible laptop? more

Resolved Question: i need help getting some information for my business!?

Ok, I'm 19 yrs old, in the SC Army National Guard for the next 5 years (been in for 1), got a $72,000 college scholarship from them + a $20,000 sign-on bonus coming soon. Im unemployed and not going to college yet. I have been working to get my computer company started for a veeery long time now and now we have finally kicked off. My competition isnt cyberpowerpc or ibuypower or any of those big name dealers because im mostly just local. Im not looking to go nationwide anytime soon as that would prolly end my life just trying to think about how i would do that at this point haha. I order parts from various websites-mostly newegg.com-and assemble them into a gaming computer that i give a name..like the black knight gaming pc...similar to how other companies like ibuypower has the battalion laptops and palidan desktops. I sell entry to highend pc's. but my problem is that i cant get my prices low. My entry level pc's are forced to be priced at $800+ b/c i cant find parts cheap enough to lower the price. im already on the verge of extinction b/c my pcs arent selling quite as well as i had hoped for. most website sell mid-range gaming pc's for about $50-$75 cheaper than my lower end ones on average. what can i do to find lower prices on parts. Oh, and i also have my own company logo that i put on my computer cases to show that its one assembled by my company which is a cool addition i think. doesnt cost so much either. i've been working on a website 24/7 for the past week and am probably about halfway done. are there any sites out there that i can order from for cheap?? Newegg.com is my primary source right now, so could yall plz help me find cheap prices based off of that? and what can you recommend i do about bulk items..how do i go about ordering in bulk to get big discounts? i havent figured that one out yet. also my company isn't copyrighted yet. im scared that might cost a butt load, so i need help with that too. haha. i know im a newb at this business stuff lol thats why im starting a business course at Devry in charlotte in january. but i wanted to go ahead and get a head start with my company so that when i am ready to go full-scale computer sales ill at least have something steady to start with. i have my own line of pc series with themed gaming pc setups within them. im working on getting my company out there on ebay right now so that i will have a very simple online market. hmmm...thats really all the cents i can put into it at this point. i may have a stroke before too long lol. thanks soo much for the answers and plz dont be shy to critisize, comment, judge, or correct anything i have said =]i forgot to mention i am veeery knowledgeble in computer technology. my only problem is getting my product on the shelves at a cheaper price to attract customers more

Resolved Question: HP SUCKS! laptop recalls?

So my laptop stopped identifying the wireless network card recently and I gave hp a shout. Turns out this is a VERY common problem with many hp pavillion models. So they are offering a free service enhancement offer to change the motherboard, but this offer is only extended till one year after the regular warranty ends.. so pretty much 2 years after you buy the laptop. HOWEVER, my laptop only started giving me problems recently, which is almost a year after the extended service period ended. What really pissed me off is that they told me that my wireless network card not working is only a symptom of a much larger motherboard problem and its only a matter a time before my entire computer fries. the tech dude even told me to backup all my files immediately.( which i am currently doing). Because my computer is a few months past the service date thing...they are refusing to fix it for free....also when i asked why i was not notified of this recall they said they must have emailed me but the email often goes directly to the junk folder...HP is doing NOTHING to help me out except for offer me a slight discount on the repair fee( which pretty much is an admission of being in the wrong)...so these guys are pretty much selling ticking time bombs..and then the tech guy tried to upsale me some ridiculously expensive repair package with some sort of extended service plan on top of that....i'm soooo peeved! ..So my question IS.......has anyone gone through this same thing and if so, any ideas as to how I can get HP to repair my laptop for free? Also i'll use this as a public service announcement...DO NOT BUY AND HP LAPTOP..OR ANY OF THEIR PRODUCTS FOR THAT MATTER......all their stuff is faulty and they'll do absolutely nothing to help you out.. anyways...any help or advice would be much appreciated. thanks more

Resolved Question: Need help with laptops?

I'm going to be going to college next year and my Dad and I are looking into laptops. I'm going to be paying for most of it. I have a quite a lot of questions because this is somewhat of a big thing and need help looking for a nice one. I'm not a complete techno-tard and I do know a lot about computers but not much about laptops/desktops. Also I'm going to be using this laptop as practically a home computer but only for myself. -Price range: I don't want to be spending over 1500-1800 dollars -Size: I'm not into those small laptops but then again I don't want a huge bulky one. I'm thinking a decent sized screen yet not too heavy and easily can fit in a bag to carry with books and such. -Performance: I'm not looking for a huge amount of storage but I am looking for great performance and a decent amount of RAM and all the good stuff. I plan to use this laptop for everything (Some games online, art, projects, video editing, etc.) -Brand: Doesn't really mean much to me but the performance and durability does. I don't really want a Dell but my dad is able to get a small discount if I do. I don't know if that's worth it though. I also heard HP has nice laptops. -Accessories: USB ports, CD drives, webcam for skyping with my old high school friends, etc. -WiFi: I really don't know much about this but I need to know a lot about it. That's all I can think of for now, but if you need any additional information I can edit this post. Thanks more

Resolved Question: Which laptop should I get?

Ok, so I've narrowed my choice down to two computers, the Dell studio 15 ($1100), The White Macbook ($1140 after student discount) or the Macbook Pro 13 ($1357 after student discount) This will primarily be used at home, as I have the HP mini for school, but will likely be taken on holidays with me. I am also hoping for it to last me for at least the next 4 years while I'm in school. I'm an avid sims 3 fan, so I would be playing that quite a bit, I also really like photography and do the occasional video editing. specs are: Dell: 15" screen, Intel® Core™ 2 Duo P8600 (2.40GHz/1066Mhz FSB/3MB cache), 4GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 at 800MHz, and 320GB SATA Hard Drive (5400RPM), 4 USB 2.0 ports & SD card reader, body made of plastic Macbook: 13" screen,4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM ,250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm, 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2USB 2.0 ports, no SD card reader, body made of plastic Macbook pro: 13" screen, 250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm, 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM, 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 USB ports, SD card creader, aluminum unibody I don't know a lot about macs, but I've heard that they are supposed to run a lot better than PCs,so if someone could tell me the advantages and disadvantage of these three computers, and which one you think would be best, that would be much appreciated. more

Voting Question: The Cheapest Place to buy a Macbook Pro?

Hi, I'm looking to buy a macbook pro 13 inch and I want to know where I can get the best deal. I checked macmall and with my student discount I'd be better off with the apple store. CompUSA doesn't sell macs. So I'm out of alternatives. I am thinking about buying a refurbished but I was wondering if it's worth it. It'll save me about $100.00 which is awesome but I'm wondering if refurbished products are trustworthy. If you guys could please provide me with some websites or stores I can go to to get the greatest deal I would really appreciate it. Oh, and I'm buying this because I want to make films so is this the right laptop to buy (note: i'm new to this so answer this question in a language I will understand, not in computer talk). How often does Mac come out with better laptops for film-making? more

Resolved Question: Discount on Windows 7 upgrade?

Voting Question: How to convince my dad to let me spend $619 on a new PC?

I'm sick of my laptop. Getting old and slow. Only runs on the cord so if I bump it, I have to restart my computer again. Overall, it's about time I get a new computer, and I would prefer a desktop PC over a laptop. Been looking at different manufacturers and it came down to two- HP and Dell. HP has really high prices and I went to Dell and found a great computer that I really liked, Inspiron 537s. It's on sale, $207 off! I went through the customization process and the final price with the discount came to be $619 with free Windows 7! This was a much better price than I'd found with HP. Customized every component to my best liking, comes with Windows 7 and the price is excellent! I have just enough money to buy, but one obstacle. Today I showed my father another computer I was looking at for around the same price on eBay, but when he looked at the time remaining (like 2 days) he said that I was "moving too fast". Meaning that I need to do more research before I buy a computer of that price. The problem is, I'm fine with waiting- but this $207 off deal and Windows 7 included ends on October 22nd, 4 days from now. I'm sure that this is a good enough computer for the price, how do I convince my dad to let me buy it before the deal expires? At his buisiness, they work with a computer company that does their repairs, and he consults them with any computer related questions. Awhile back when I told him I was looking into purchasing a PC he said that I should ask them for some guidance. I'm thinking maybe I should explain the situation, and ask him if i can call them tomorrow to see if it is worth the price, he will let me buy it. Keep in mind that this is my money I'm spending. Please answer quickly. more

Voting Question: Buying a new laptop on Amazon near Black Friday/Cyber Monday?

So I spilled coffee on my old laptop and now the keyboard is semi-working, meaning that it is typing but only shortcuts and the on-screen keyboard is doing the same thing. So I think that an external keyboard isn't going to fix the problem. It is not worth fixing since it is already 3 years old. I am looking at Amazon for laptops since I don't want to go to the store since the computer sales personnel are seriously annoying. I am going to wait until Window 7 comes pre-installed before I buy. But one of my friend told me why not wait until Thanksgiving to buy my laptop for cheaper. My question is...Is it worth waiting 2 months to buy the laptop on Amazon? Is there a discount on laptops near Thanksgiving on Amazon? I know there are great discounts in-stores but seriously I am not all the willing to stalk Walmart, Best Buy, Staples and etc. at 4-5am in the morning for it. more

Voting Question: Visual studio 2008 on more than one computer?

My school is giving out heavily discounted copies of Visual Studio 2008 Professional; however, only one copy is allowed per student. I need visual studio 2008 for my class. Now my question is -- can I use it on both my desktop and laptop? I use my laptop every day in school and while traveling, and I use my more-powerful desktop at home. This is the Professional version that normally sells for several hundred dollars; it's not crippled and it's not a corporate edition so it needs to be activate online.I want to keep it legal tho. more

Voting Question: Not sure if I have a software issue, or if I have faulty hardware component. Or both?

I recently received a brand new computer from Cyber Power PC. This is the second PC I have bought from them and the only one with an issue. I have been troubleshooting via their tech support to no avail since Monday. And this is what is happening. After making sure all components were seated properly I did a full format, booting and reinstalling from my OS disk. Then I used my provided software to install all related drivers for video, sound, etc. While I am installing these I experience choppy mouse movement and prolonged window response time, but only by a few seconds, but I discount this to the lack of all drivers. After they are all installed however, and before I hook up the internet, I perform a restart. The reboot goes through quickly and I get back to my desktop and this is where I have about 30 seconds of normal operation before I experience extended lagging on window response and reactions to mouse commands (upwards of 4-5 minutes at times) before a window will appear, or a mouse click will register. Programs take several minutes to respond if they respond at all. I get the "Program is not responding" constantly, and that is just with the provided programs with the OS disk ( Internet Explorer, and even Windows Update utilities). I then figured maybe I just needed some windows updates, so I hooked the computer up to the internet and while the windows update was running I went through the grueling task of getting my anti virus installed ( Bit Defender 2010, made for my specific OS) which took over an hour with the window and mouse delays, which extended into the overall performance of the installation process. After downloading all updates I went to install them. The computer then sat at 5% on the first of 35 updates for over 4 hours. After a hard shutdown I rebooted, and again got normal performance all the way to my desktop. Then just to see if it would work I attempted to install a game via a dvd-rom. Five and a half hours later it was at 10%. My laptop at this point far out performs my desktop, my laptop being a generic HP that is over 18 months old. Here are the essentials of my current desktop build: CPU: (Sckt775)Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E8500 CPU @ 3.16GHz 1333FSB 6MB L2 Cache 64-bit MOTHERBOARD: (3-Way SLI Support) Asus P5N72-T Premium nForce 780i SLI Chipset LGA775 FSB1333 DDR2 Mainboard POWER SUPPLY: 700 Watts Power Supply VIDEO: NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 1GB 16X PCI Express by EVGA MEMORY: 4GB (2GBx2) PC6400 DDR2/800 Dual Channel Memory (Kingston HyperX) SOUND: ESS 3D WAVETABLE SOUND PCI OS: Microsoft® Windows Vista™ Business w/ Service Pack 1 Single Hard Drive (250GB SATA-II 3.0Gb/s 8MB Cache 7200RPM HDD Anyone who can be of help, your expertise will be greatly appreciated. With what I have going on I have been told by one guy on tech support that its a hardware failure, and another one insists its something in the software. Either way I would greatly prefer to not ship my brand new desktop back to those guys if I can fix it myself. If I can fix communication and navigation equipment for multi-million dollar Marine Corps aircraft, I would hope to be able to tackle a desktop computer... Looking at a 2-4 week turnaround, and lots of money in shipping if I have to send it back to Cyber Power. If you need any further information please contact me through this post. more

Resolved Question: Should i get the normal macbook or the pro version for college?

I'm studying biomedical sciences and it's my first semester now and i really need a computer(laptop). Should i go with the white macbook or buy the macbook pro 15inch 2,53ghz? Will the macbook do the work? or is it "really really" worth buying the pro? I don't work with different softwares and it's just mostly searching the internet and watching documentaries and stuff. *I'm planning on keeping and using it for at least three years though* The white macbook costs 1360 dollars while the pro costs 2330 dollars ( I live in Sweden and they have a 25% tax on everything so it's more expensive here, also I've included the 10% student discount) more

Resolved Question: calling all you techo savy computer geeks! laptop, destop, mac or windows.?

here is the dilemma, about to start my final year at uni in media production where we use pretty much all adobe's software. My budget is around £1000 area, baring in mind i get %16 discount on macs. i like the idea of a mac, however im aware that i could get more for my money, but im unsure of what. I either want a laptop which can handle adobe very well with the possibility of some gaming (counter-strike being the founder of this passion). but are laptops capable of such things? surly keyboard and mouse ftw. or a top of the range desktop which is sufficient enough that i will not miss the portability of a laptop. another area which interests me is the ability that mac have of duel booting, having os and windows on one machine would be great, that's of course if i even need it, maybe macs can handle gaming after all! I realise this is an awkward dilemma, as i want it for video-editing and gaming but also portability would be great, does such machine out there exist? or am i going to have to sacrifice an element? Also my path in which i wish to take is advertising! do they use specific computers??? would be very helpful if you could jot down ur views, experience and any advice you have. thx more

Resolved Question: HP computer that plays the sims 3?

I originally was going to buy ASUS F50Sf-X1A but my dad told me if I buy a HP he can get me a discount. I was looking at the touchsmart tx2z but I love the sims3 and really want to be able to play it on there. Its the only game I really play alot so I will probably just use the computer for homework but I need to have the computer be able to play the sims 3. I really like the touchsmart but if there is a better HP laptop that will play the sims please tell me what it is. (I already have around $800) more
