PHILADELPHIA - A college student returning to school after the winter break fell victim to a prank at Philadelphia's airport by a Transportation Security Administration worker who pretended to plant a plastic bag of white powder in her carryon luggage. The worker is no longer employed by the TSA after the incident this month, a spokeswoman said. Rebecca Solomon, 22, a University of Michigan student, wrote in a column for her campus newspaper that she was having her bags screened on Jan. 5 before her flight to Detroit when the employee stopped her, reached into her laptop computer bag and pulled out the plastic bag, demanding to know where she had gotten the powder. In the Jan. 10 column for The Michigan Daily, she recounted how she struggled to come up with an explanation, wondering if it was bomb-detonating material slipped in by a terrorist or drugs put there by a smuggler. "He let me stutter through an explanation for the longest minute of my life," Solomon wrote. "Tears streamed down my face as I pleaded with him to understand that I'd never seen this baggie before." A short time later, she said, the worker smiled and said it was his. The worker "waved the baggie at me and told me he was kidding, that I should've seen the look on my face," she said. Solomon said she asked to speak to a supervisor and filled out a complaint, and during that process was told that the man was training TSA workers to detect contraband. Two days later, she said, she was told he had been disciplined. "I had been terrified and disrespected by an airport employee," she said. "He'd joked about the least funny thing in air travel." There was no answer Saturday at a telephone listing for Solomon at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. An e-mail message seeking comment from her was sent Saturday by The Associated Press, and a telephone message was left at her parents' home in suburban Philadelphia. TSA spokeswoman Ann Davis told The Philadelphia Inquirer she did not dispute the student's account and said the employee was no longer with the agency, though she declined to say whether he had been fired or quit. She also declined to identify the worker or his job title, citing privacy laws. "TSA viewed this behavior to be completely inappropriate and unprofessional," Davis said in a statement. "The employee was immediately disciplined by TSA management at the Philadelphia airport." Voting Question: Can Someone Help Me Interpret This Random Dream?

I start off in a bedroom hanging out with my Cousin, Char and her boyfriend, Peaver, and our friend Kelsey and her boyfriend, Bubs. (Weird names. I know. They're Nicknames) Peaver and Bubs are sitting on the vanity stool to the left bottom corner of the bed, Char's standing next to Peaver, Kelsey's sitting on the bed and I'm sitting on the floor on a pillow parallel to the bed. My boyfriend, Shane, isn't there for some reason. Char starts complaining about how she wants to do nice things. Fancy things. Then Kesley says "yeah me too". Char states that Kelsey is sick of sitting on the bed and wants to sit in a nice chair. I start to realize how bad my voice is getting (I'm losing it now in real life). Then I turn around, still sitting on the pillow and there's a shopping mall connected to the room behind the bed that I didn't notice before. Then my old hairdresser Dana, (who I loved! But my mom made me ditch for my cousin who gives us a discount), starts to wave at me. She's only about 5 feet away. I wave back, get up and ask her if she knows any good products to help my throat out a bit. She says that she'll ask a co-worker for me. We go to her salon and theirs a snooty looking woman sitting on a high stool in front of a computer (but facing away) and looking into a small mirror. Dana asks her and she says "Down the Isle, $11" I tell her it's scratchy and I can barely talk. She says "$5 more." So we look at all of the products, theirs a Clean N' Clear product. A fancy looking Laptop and some more random too-toxic-to-drink looking products. Then we stop at a stand where their are pre-heated mini straighteners and Dana starts to straighten my hair and asks me to go to a movie that weekend. I think "Should I go with Dana, or my friend, Kourtney, who asked me earlier the week?" I tell Dana, "Sure." Then I go to a warehouse with my Cousin, Steph. My current hairdresser. She starts to talk about water-proof Puma socks. I say "They're awesome. Comfy and work great!" She agrees but says they're hard to find. Then we're walking out of the store and she said that all her co-workers think I work with her and give me weird looks. I look in a mirror and i look tall and gorgeous and bronzed, the opposite of my current appearance. Then I take my big coat off and I'm wearing a short, silky, light green dress that looks amazing on the body I have in this dream. I walk away from the mirror, carrying my big coat and follow Steph out of the warehouse. She walks around the bed frames and I walk over them. I feel some air on my bum and I pull down the hem a bit, holding it in place until, we're out of the warehouse. Then we're walking back into the mall and Steph asks me to go to a movie the weekend. I think whether I should go with Kourtney or Dana or Steph. I tell Steph "Sure." Then I end up in a small cave in a sleeping bag with Steph, A guy who looks like my dad (he works away) and a young unfamiliar woman. The man who looks similar to my dad states how I'm "Art's daughter, definitely" (Art[thur] is my dad's name). Then a door opens when we all get out of the sleeping bag and white water rushes in. Everyone is talking about how excited they are. The man who looks like my dad and the unfamiliar woman both get on a raft and rush out of the cave. Steph gets ready to go but can't. The water carries us out and we need to grab hold of rocks until it calms down. Then we go back to the cave. And the man and woman are there again. They go white water rafting. Steph gets ready. The water carries us, we grab hold of rocks until the water is calm, and we end up in the cave again. I'm horrified to do this by the way. This repeats several times. Then I ask what's so exciting about this. Somehow I can see outside of the cave and I'm looking down over a waterfall with Steph and in the water below I see a giant, red, Chinese-dragon, looking creature swerving and swimming the the water, baring it's teeth, it's mouth fully open. It jumps and tries to get us a few times. We scream and I'm more terrified then I was before. Then we're in the cave again and everyone else is getting ready to go and on their raft and I say "I am NOT doing this. Can that thing eat you? Kill you?" They all tell me yes. The water comes but none of them go. I wonder why and look at the door. It's closed. They all blame me, in a friendly way. I tell them I didn't close it, no one believes me. I get sooky and keep telling them how I didn't do it and still, no one believes me. Then We're all in a room. Char, Peaver, Kelsey, Bubs, Dana, Steph, the man who looks like my dad, the unfamiliar woman and Me. We're all sitting around a coffee table, with gifts all around. Everyone wants me to open mine first. So I do. I get books from almost everyone. (I love to read) And the last one has a mini-loofah as a bookmark on a page in the book I got from Steph. Resolved Question: White vertical lines through my screen and cannot connect to internet!! Please help!?

I was using my laptop(hp pavilion zt affinity with windows vista), I shut it down, put it back in the bag and then the next day I opened it up, turned it on and I have 5 white vertical lines through my screen and even when I turn my card on it says windows cannot find any wireless networks. I have checked all of my drivers and it says they are all up to date and working properly. The lines are in the same place every time and pushing or bending the screen does not effect them at all. The only thing that I did that the night that it was working was update my quicktime player and I when it was working I even did a system restore to remove that update and it still doesn't work. I have an nVidia video card but all of my games still run fine and everything it just has these obnoxious white lines through my screen, and as I said, my wireless card will not pick up any wireless signals. I believe my built in card is also an nVidia. I took the computer apart and didn't see anyway to remove the card(although there probably is) but there is no dust or anything around it. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could fix this, my computer is kind of useless to me when I can't get online and my screen is obstructed. Also, I don't have a windows vista os disc. Thanks for any help, it is greatly appreciated!wow, that one sentenced is kind of messed up, sorry. I meant to say, when it was working I updated my quicktime player. After I turned it off and turned it back on it had the white lines and wouldn't connect. So I did a system restore and restored it to a point before I updated the quicktime. I also ran a full virus scan, malware scan(with windows defender), ran a disc check, and defragged it. more

Voting Question: How small is a "small purse" allowed on a flight?

Since the recent updates to security when flying into the US (I'm flying in from Canada), no carry-on luggage is allowed. You can take a purse however. These are the new rules I'm looking at from Transport Canada's website: "Passengers may carry with them one or more of the following items: medication or medical devices, small purses, cameras, coats, items for care of infants, laptop computers, crutches, canes, walkers, containers carrying life sustaining items, a special needs item, musical instruments, or diplomatic or consular bags." my parents actively discourage my extracurricular activities. a year ago, i took both flute and taekwondo lessons, but then they quit both without telling me (i showed up to my taekwondo class one day and the receptionist told me that i was no longer a student there -- pretty embarrassing). whenever i ask if i can start flute again, they both tell me they're sick of hearing me play (i played for 8 yrs and actually enjoyed it, but they would constantly get into fights over the lessons, since they didnt think 45 min of practice on weekdays was enough). now they have completely cleared my weekends, and expect me to use it for study (even though my grades aren't really a problem -- i get mostly A's and the occasional B plus) so I never look forward to coming home anymore, especially not for the weekend. Also, whenever i need the computer to type up my homework or to do research for an assignment, my father refuses, saying that he needs it too (even though he could use his laptop) and that i should finish everything that DOESN'T require the internet first, even if i've already finished all the assignments i can do by hand. when he finally gives up the computer, it's usually around 8 or 9 at night, and when i can't finish on time ("on time" is 10) then he forces me to stop everything and to face him and listen to him shout about how he never gets enough sleep because of me and how I have zero time management skills. These tantrums usually last a while. After all this, I usually sleep at 11 to 12. my parents sometimes go through my bags and find my quizzes or tests, and if the grade is below a 90 they start screaming and blame the grade on facebook or aim or the few extracurricular activities i still participate in, and block fb and aim, and disconnect the TV... they also moved the computer to the living room, right next to the couch, so sometimes if they have nothing to do they just sit there and watch me do homework. If they see me open gmail chat to ask a question about the hw, they feel like I must be gossiping or something like that, and they force me to show them what I typed (which gets pretty embarrassing since they scroll all the way up to the top of the convo and see everything that was said before I asked the question) and then start screaming triumphantly because they think that their suspicions were correct. Sorry to complain so much, and i know based on the size of my question you guys prob think i have no life, but i need to get this off my chest, and it’s time I got some advice on how to deal with my impossible parents more

Okay, I currently own the Dell Inspiron 1521 but I need a new laptop. I broke my keyboard and need to replace the entire thing and it costs almost as much as the entire laptop was! Plus, I'm a college student and this laptop is soooo heavy to carry along with my books to class. I don't really know too much about computers, so I'll just tell you what I need: *PC. I'm a film student and our school is funded by PCs so I will not switch to Mac. *Lightweight. As I said before, I have to bring my laptop everywhere and my current one is so thick and heavy. *A ton of memory. As a film/animation student, I will have to put huge programs on my computer and ensure they run quickly, such as Photoshop, After Effects, Maya, etc... *Ability to run video games and 3D graphics really well. Again, film student. *An included CD/DVD drive/burner, as I often need to edit film on my laptop and I need to burn the occasional movie. *At least 2 USB ports. *Wireless internet. VERY IMPORTANT. Like I said, COLLEGE STUDENT. *Preferrably thin. I hate my current laptop, it takes up sooo much space in my bag. *A big enough screen so that I can edit and do my digital media quite easily - but not a massive screen, because I don't want a massive laptop. Voting Question: Problems with laptop display?

I have a Sony Vaio NW which I bought in October. My brother installed the computer game Civilization III onto it, and ever since two black bars have been on the right and left of my computer screen, reducing my vision to like a 10" by 10" box. It remained like this even after he stopped playing. I let him play a second time, and the screen seemed to zoom in. In other words, I previously was able to see my entire screen after his first use, now I have to scroll left, right, up, and down to see everything. The black bars remained. I chatted with a Sony technician online, "Blake" (ugh). He tried all sorts of things, including reinstalling the video driver and right clicking to change the screen resolution. Eventually he had to restart the computer which ended our connection (at least I hope so...). Can anyone help me further? I mean, I don't want to bag on tech support, he tried his best, but he obviously had no solution. more

it shuts down randomly, started after i took it through the scanner at the airport, you know the thing you send your bags through... well after i did the guy said that I shouldnt have done that and next time to hand them the laptop and send the case through... now my computer runs hot and shuts down automatically.... Voting Question: upgrade processor or RAM for photoshop?

I'm looking to buy a secondary laptop that will be easy to travel with. The main thing I need it to do is run photoshop cs4. I will be storing all my file on an external hard drive. I just want a laptop that I can throw in my camera bag and fine tune my images before I can get home really work on them. The Dell Inspiron 11z seems to be the size and weight I am looking for. Since I know what a huge application photoshop is I know I should make some upgrades to the system the question is should I upgrade the processor or the memory? Voting Question: HP Laptop, overheated in sleep mode?

I have had my laptop for almost 2 months now with no problem. Just yesterday my free windows 7 upgrade from HP arrived and I installed it and upgraded everything it told me to. Today I folded it closed and put it in my bag before class (like I do every single day several times a day) and when I took it out after it was REALLY hot... like super overheated. I tried to turn it on but it was froze on a black screen so I had to hard reset it. Then I noticed for a little while it said "52% plugged in, not charging" in the corner. It eventually started charging again. What the hell happened with my computer? I was reading around and someone said "update the bios" but I tried and it was already on the latest one. Then I just changed it from 'balanced' to 'power saver' mode. I haven't had a chance to test it out yet, but I'm not confident it will resolve my problem. Why did this happen in the first place and how could I ensure it doesn't happen again? I'm going to be going to college next year and my Dad and I are looking into laptops. I'm going to be paying for most of it. I have a quite a lot of questions because this is somewhat of a big thing and need help looking for a nice one. I'm not a complete techno-tard and I do know a lot about computers but not much about laptops/desktops. Also I'm going to be using this laptop as practically a home computer but only for myself. -Price range: I don't want to be spending over 1500-1800 dollars -Size: I'm not into those small laptops but then again I don't want a huge bulky one. I'm thinking a decent sized screen yet not too heavy and easily can fit in a bag to carry with books and such. -Performance: I'm not looking for a huge amount of storage but I am looking for great performance and a decent amount of RAM and all the good stuff. I plan to use this laptop for everything (Some games online, art, projects, video editing, etc.) -Brand: Doesn't really mean much to me but the performance and durability does. I don't really want a Dell but my dad is able to get a small discount if I do. I don't know if that's worth it though. I went to Best Buy yesterday and bought an internal hard drive. I already ripped off the top of the small plastic bag that contained the hard drive inside. Will Best Buy still give me a full refund? There was something else wrong with my laptop so I might buy a new computer therefore the hard drive is useless to me.I just checked out their return policy. It says that they can't give me a full refund if the item was opened but I can exchange for the identical item. Resolved Question: What to do with old military uniforms?

My husband has some old MCCUU's. They're pretty much in new condition except they're all ripped in the crotch. I was going to just sew them back together but he decided to buy new ones because he wanted a different size anyways, so now we have WAAAY too many uniforms. Voting Question: My laptop won't go to sleep?

It used to be that when I closed the cover on my Toshiba Laptop and waited for a minute, it would go to sleep/hibernate and the lights would go off, and the next time I opened the cover it would recover everything that was on the screen from the last time I was on it. Lately, however, whenever I close the lid, it will hibernate, and then over the course of the time when it's hibernating, it will randomly turn on and off, with the lights turning on for no reason and then turning off again, all while the lid is still closed. I used to fully charge the computer, close the lid, and place it in my computer bag to go about my day, and then open it again and it would be fully charged. But now when I come back to it later it has a dead battery because the thing didn't stay sleeping. I've tried messing with the "lid close action" settings, switching it from sleep to hibernation etc., but nothing seems to help. Can anyone tell me what's going on? It's a brand new laptop running Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bitAnd sometimes a light flashes orange for no reason when it's supposed to be hibernating. I can't figure out why this thing won't stay turned off when I close the lid. more

When Shaz Green opened the front door at half past he was at his desk, eating buttered toast and drinking his second coffee. “Morning Aitch.” He glanced over brown framed spectacles. “Mornin’ Shaz.” Shaz, wide eyed peered around the room that was half office, half Aitch’s living room. . “God what a mess. It’ll take a week to clean this place.” Aitch gazed about him, surprised. “It’s not that bad.” He protested. Shaz picked his dirty shirt, socks and pyjamas off the settee, carrying them at arms length to the laundry basket in the bathroom. Aitch gazed after her, appreciating the way her pale grey silk suit clung to her body, shimmering with every high heeled step, auburn hair curling just below the collar. Most traffic lights were red and it seemed to Aitch that every zebra crossing held a school crocodile or an old woman with walking stick and plastic bag. On the other side of Bury the roads became lanes, other lanes hidden by trees smoked the fact that they existed; then for a while he hit a farm area and was brought to a stop by twenty sheep. He counted them as they turned right in front of him, and as the whole flock disappeared into a stone walled field a tractor came from a pair of gates ahead of him. She was hysterical, I didn’t want to leave her but I had to go and help the others. “Sure sweetie, I will try” I told her. I turned away and started to walk towards Mark. That’s when I heard her wail. I turned to see her clutching her baby; like someone was going to take him away. He had already been took from her. “Mark, we have to get help fast, she is losing it. Try to find anything we can communicate with”. I ordered. I surprised myself at how calm I had become in the last hour. I had done all my breaking down on the plane and decided I had to be the strong one. “Sure. Give me a shout if you find anything” Mark shouted as he ran towards the flames. The smell of the fuel was becoming stronger by the minute. It was making my head feel fuzzy. I knew it was not safe; the longer we stayed here, the more risk we were at. I had to keep focused, the quicker we found supplies the sooner we could get away and find a safe place to wait this nightmare out. I ran to the closet intact body I saw, I couldn’t believe I was going to be putting my hand into his pocket; but I had to. “Please God, forgive me” I whispered, as I closed my eyes and felt my way into his trousers. Our luck was changing; he had a phone. It was switched off, so I quickly tried to switch it on but I was moving to fast. My hands were shaking and I dropped it a few times. I picked it up and decided I would wait until I met back up with the others before trying to switch it back on again. I was obviously not as calm as I thought I was. “Claire, over here” Came a shout from my left. I looked up and saw Mark waving. I ran over to him as quick as I could. “I’ve found a few phones, no computers though. I’m sorry” he dipped his head in embarrassment. “Don’t worry Mark, its ok. You have done really well” I assured him. “I found a trail that leads off into the Forrest. I had to go be sick; the smell is turning my stomach. But we could try it later, see where it leads”. he sounded a bit more pleased with himself. “Yes, good idea. Lets get back and see how Laura and Lisa are getting on” I told him. Resolved Question: Spill on laptop - screen is extremely dim!?

So I was pretty much being an idiot yesterday and without really thinking stuck my lunch bag in with the same bag my laptop was in. Anyway, I had a couple of packets of soy sauce in there and somehow they got punctured or started leaking or something, so when I got to campus all of my stuff (including iPod, camera, laptop, etc) had soy sauce all over it. My laptop was in hibernate mode so I wiped it off and tried to shut it down (and ended up force shutting it down because I couldn't tell if it was responding or not). Afterward I left it out to dry in the sun for a few hours. When I turned it on again to see if it was working or not, the hard drive appeared to be functional but the screen was extremely dim. From far away it looked like the screen was off and we had to go up really close to the screen to see anything. I dried out the laptop for another few hours until I got back to my apartment, and it is still dim. I tried to use the F keys to make the screen brighter, but it didn't do anything. From what I have read so far it probably would have been good to let the laptop dry for a couple of days, and it makes it worse that it was soy sauce and not water (which makes it more sticky and stuff). I think that there may be a problem with the back light, but I am not sure what. I am planning to hook the computer up to another monitor and transfer all of my files over so that I can send it in to get it fixed (thank goodness for accidental breakage warranties~) but is there anything else that you guys can suggest? by default my laptop goes into standby when I fold down the screen. apparently while I am sleeping and while I have the computer in the car it turns itself on. when I pull my laptop out of its bag the thing is very very hot, hot enough to give oneself first degree burns and then my battery level is nearly gone why does it keep doing it? more

Resolved Question: How do I recover the data off my USB hard drive?

I've had the drive for around 4 years now. It's a simple 2.5" 12 GB external hard drive. I bought it off eBay and used it as storage for some of my iTunes music files. Recently, it hasn't been showing up in My Computer or as a hard drive in the Device Manager. What it does show is a USB Mass Storage Device with an Code 10 error (device can not be started). I wish I could say when it actually stopped but I don't know since he last time I updated my iPod. Now that I remember, I haven't seen it in at least 2 months. There have been no recent power surges that I can think of in that time. Well, one, but it was already unrecognized then. The main PC HD has been damaged by power failures and bounced back, but never the external drive. How did it pass up the main and go to the backup? WTF? The drive is spinning and the green power light is on, but it just can't seem to install itself and boot up. There is no update for the driver. I'm thinking it is a driver/firmware problem, though. I heard about the freezer myth. I actually just put it in the freeer in a ziploc bag an hour ago, but I don't know if that's actually gona help the problem. If I can just copy the files and buy a new drive, I'd be good. The thing is...how do I get it to copy? This same thing happened to my floppy drive a couple times a while back. It was unrecognized and then it just started up again with no work on my behalf. Sometimes my laptop will not recognize its CD-RW/DVD and after a restart, will be ok...and it never had a surge and will be on power : / Bewildering.... more

hi im 17 and i feel like im moving nowhere, where to start........ ok when i first started school a was a right little shit (8ish) cousing trouble swearing etc etc. i eventually got kicked out of primary. and whent to a temp school for about 4 or so months i think 6 maybe... and i looved it my behavuar improved immensly well and i felt like i had a future. then my time was up at that school and whent into a permanent primary school, and that was first time i was bullied, i hated it, my parants didnt understand at all what i was going through anyway i whent to secondary school all confident and happy, then in the first yr i was bullied again i was used as a punching bag, embarrassed in front of the class and this was everyday, and the teachers punished me because i was swearing back at them, and even when they saw me get beaten by 5 or so, they would just walk on by and completely ignore me, no matter how many times i told them about it(i even had them in the same classes as me except art). my yrs at secondary school crushed my confidence, lost my willingness to learn, and i have a very short fuse. once i left i went to collage to study English and maths, my first 3 weeks wore the worst as im not a very social person(well i was before school)so i was incredibly nervous of pple, i also suffer from severe panic attacks well about 4 types of attacks, the worst sent me to hospital and my chest felt like it was being slowely crushed, and i couldnt contraol my arms and legs, and those onse could last from 1hr to 2hrs, and the 2hr after, just leaves me shaking, and in shock. anyway i was kicked out of collage because i suffer from depression, and most days i couldnt come in (and one of the only reasons i went into collage was cos i had a crush on this girl ). and to deal with stress i chawed the inside of my mouth, and back of my lips. i was so nurvous and stressed that i couldnt even fell the pain untill the next day. my feels like its gotten so bad that i dont even know what to do, nothing amuses me no more and my parents are contently putting me down all the time, asking why aren't i going collage or don't have a job, im not an A grade student i have all Us (unclassified) GCSEs. i have tried to commit suicide on more than on occasion, but i just cant no matter how hard i trie my body stops me. the only intersest i have is with computers, i love them and id love to learn more, but since my parants have no money and neither do i, it took me 3 years to save up for laptop, wich broke the first yr so u can imagine how frustrated it makes me feel, and thats my life story in a nut shell. i need help badly i cant go collage as it dont interest me in any way, i cant get a job becouse i have no qualifications etc and my only 2 sayings i beileive in are; no good deed ever goes unpunished (from experiance, a hole lot of it) you born rich you live rich you born poor you die poor. more

(I'm reposting this 'cause it ended up in the wrong category and I'm insane enough that that will really bug me.) This has a bit of a backstory and it's kind of long, but please keep reading or just go straight to the end and answer the question, what do you carry around with you. So, here's the back story. I don't like purses, but I most of my pants don't have pockets and because it was summer/this fall is really hot, it's not cool enough to wear a jacket or sweater most of the time, plus I worry about stuff falling out of the pockets. It's happened to me... Anyways, I normally use my messenger bag which is a computer bag and fits my 17inch laptop with room to spare, but normally I don't carry my computer around, so it tends to get a little... overpacked. Like, the last time I used it (this is on a day when I did storytime at the library), I carried around with 2 novels, four kids books, a folder of papers, my wallet, two notebooks, a bottle of sunblock, three or four packs of mini-kleenex pack thingies, my library cards, tape, thumbtacks, two pens, an antique earring case, a couple plastic bags, some change, my keys, a zebra eraser, this little pouch thing that has rolaids, tylenol, my lactose intolerance pills, more kleenex, bandaids, girl things, chapstick, and then after the library I returned one (kids) book, went to the post office and picked up three novels (two in bubble envelopes). So I overpack a little. But on Friday, I was in the city and bought a really cute, smaller, black and purple messenger bag, and I don't know what to carry in it. XD I don't have a cell phone and I don't wear much make up so... help? So what do you all carry around with you?Livvy: Did you even read the question? I have bags. Two of them, to be exact.
