Laptop Sound Card Questions asked

Open Question: Laptop Sound Question?

Right now I have the Fujitsu T5010 tablet and I have my Logitech Z-2300 speakers hooked up to them, I also plug my Ultrasone HFI-780 headphones into the laptop. I feel like having speakers and headphones this nice is a waste because my sound card on my laptop is so bad. I was trying to figure out a way to improve the sound quality, mostly for music. I was looking at some items and was wondering which one would be the best. http://www.echoaudio.com/Products/CardBus/IndigoDJ/index.php http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=669&product=17988 http://us.creative.com/products/product.asp?category=209&subcategory=669&product=17751 http://www.m-audio.com/products/en_us/MobilePreUSB.html If you have another suggestion for a product that would be great, my price limit is around $200. more

Open Question: Question about spdif on a laptop?

Ok, I have a new packard bell Tj65 laptop. I have no problems except the sound when using earphones plugged into the line out port. There is a little spdif wording next to this port which must mean it has that functionality as well as normal line out. The sound quality is not great using standard iPod earphones in this port, it really struggles with bass and has to be turned right down to be clearer. I don't believe the earphones are in any way damaged. The sound card also cuts out as Spotify told me a few times when using this port with the earphones. Do I need a special digital adapter to plug into the port followed by my normal earphones? Any advice welcome :) thanks in advance more

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite P300-133 (Vista) laptop with a Creative SoundBlaster Live! 5.1 external sound card, and I can't find a setting which could allow me to hear my voice over the speakers.I also can't record songs from, for example, Winamp directly. It works only over the microphone. There isn't any kind of failure in my computer, it is in a perfect condition, but I just can't seem to find any program option such as selecting the sound source I need.Is there a program for that? more

Open Question: Gateway computer sound driver?

I have a w730-k8x gateway laptop that was recently upgraded to Windows 7.Everything has gone smoothly other then the fact that audio doesn't work anymore. This used to work in XP, so it's not a hardware issue. If I go into the device utilities in computer management, it tells me that my audio card is a multimedia audio controller. This device needs a driver, and I can't seem to find one that works with a 64 bit of Windows 7. All help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!I forgot to mention that i did go to the gateway website, but nothing happens when I click the download button on both internet explorer and google chrome. It simply displays a are you connected to the internet page. I'm guessing that the link is broken. more

Open Question: What sound card would I need to use timecoded vinyls?

Okay, so here's my set up: Two stanton T.80 turnables, a Numark DXM06 mixer and I have a laptop. What I need to know is what type of sound card would I need to buy to sync my timecoded vinyls (serato) to mix my MP3s in software like Virtual Dj. I know you can buy Serato Scratch Live but its 800 bucks and I can't fit that into my budget. Also, I've searched the web and found that people have suggested using the Maya 44 which has two input jacks for the turntables but I don't really understand. PLEASE HELP ME :) Thanks. more

Open Question: Does anybody know of a small graphic equalizer unit I can put in line between a laptop and Bose Sounddock 2?

My laptop bass & treble functions are disabled which I believe is due to a poor sound card or driver. Therefore, when I link the laptop to my Bose Sounddock through aux input I have no ability to adjust specific sound parameters and can only control volume. I am after a very small unit that I can put in line to do this. For info I am playing vidoes through applications which don't have built in sound adjustments such as Youtube, Spotify, etc. Does anybody have any suggestions? Many Thanks more

Open Question: Can anyone recommend upgrades for the Dell Studio 17?

I'm considering purchasing one of the Studio 17 models from Dell Direct (online). A few problems: There are apparently two models, neither of the numbers are stated anywhere, but I know there are a few different ones, namely the 1735/37 and 1745/47 (the latter is at Best Buy). Depending on where I click on the Dell site, it will bring up one or the other, so I keep confusing myself since there is no way to tell them apart really. I want to keep the price under $1200 but I would really like to have certain upgrades, which again, pricing and options depend upon which route I take to get to the Studio 17 page. (http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dncwsx3&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=laptop_studio_17 **versus** http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?oc=dndotx1&c=us&l=en&s=dhs&cs=19&kc=studio_great_deals ). Okay, here is my actual situation. I am not really into gaming but I do like to watch TV shows and movies on my laptop as well as play around on Facebook games. Anyone who plays Farmville or CafeWorld knows that these two games suck the life right out of your computer, causing freeze ups and other annoyances. I'm tired of that happening. Sooo, out of the following processors, which would you recommend for my use? They are all Intel Core 2 Duo: P8700, P7450...or any other in the P line (more energy efficient), since I might be able to find a refurb. To upgrade from the T6600 to P8700, it's $125 or $200, depending on whichever model, so I wanna make sure it's gonna be worth the extra expense. Second question: Is it worth it to upgrade the video card or sound card on this machine, considering my use? Both are most likely fine, especially the sound considering it has a subwoofer and premium speakers. I like to listen to music, but it's not a priority to have great sound. But again, I am tired of lag and crappy graphics when I am trying to watch something or play around on Facebook...for the video card, 512MB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 is an option for the first link I posted, 1GB is an option for the second, if I remember correctly. Next: How much memory do I need? I believe 4GB is fine but is it worth it to upgrade to 6GB? Lastly: The screen. I am in a bind with this thing. I actually had ordered a Studio 17 with an LED screen but the thing is on backorder, so I canceled my order to see if I could configure something else. Now I'm second-guessing that decision. Basically, I am on the computer alllll day. I do school work online and in OpenOffice, work online and then play around on social networking sites/email/etc. The glare from the glossy screen of my Inspiron 1526 might be contributing to me getting massive headaches, plus it's annoying when I'm in bright light or outside somewhere and I want to avoid that when I get the new laptop. Also to consider is HD+ or full HD with the 16:9 aspect ratio. Is it worth it to pay extra for the LED screen and/or full HD? My main concern is the LED backlit vs. regular LCD screen, but I do need to figure out if it's worth it to have full HD. I don't care about Bluray or anything, but I'm concerned that the large screen will show black lines and artifacts and whatnot if I don't go with full HD. The LED backlit should be more energy efficient, also.... Thanks soooooo much in advance! more

Open Question: Which laptop should I get?

After wasting an entire afternoon fighting against the inevitable, I'm giving up with my laptop and will try and buy and new one soon. I'm looking online, but am struggling to find what I want. Can anyone recommend a laptop that'll do/have the following: Lightweight - I'll want to take it on the train everyday, a drawback with my current 3.5Kg monster Decent Intel chip - I always prefer Intels, but don't understand all the different types at the moment HD screen - not fussed too much about size can be 13"-17" DVD burner Good battery life, so it can be used for office work on the train for about 2.5hrs per day - more would be a bonus HDD - 250GB or more would be ideal Graphics card: Always a priority for me as I think it future-proofs a laptop the most (with RAM) ideally a 1GB card Sound card: don't really care, I'll be using headphones Uses: Office, maybe Photoshop, Roxio, games: Modern Warfare at least, Modern Warfare 2 if possible I hope I get get away with spending around £1,000, but could stretch to £1,400 if necessary. I'm currently using a Dell Inspiron 9300 - Centrino 2.26 2GBRAM RAM, 80GB HDD from 2005 (listed at £2,100) I usually like Dell and Acer, but don't mind the make as long as it's not a) Sony Viao or b) some own-brand rubbish that'll break within a year or two. Many thanks in advance! more

Resolved Question: Can I upgrade my laptop's graphics card?

I have an Acer Extensa 4420 with an ATI Radeon x1250 graphics card. I purchased Assassin's Creed at a Black Friday sale, and discovered that the graphics card is not up to their standard (I can play Guild Wars and Dragon Age just fine). I get sound, no video. Have updated my software, tried all the troubleshooting I could find, but I think I may need a new card. I e-mailed Acer and they told me... "It is preferred that you keep to the original configuration of your system so that all the programs and applications in your computer will recognize all the hardware installed in it. Please be advised that any changes or upgrades to the original configuration of the system are done so at the sole risk of you the end user." ...which really isn't an answer. Any ideas? Thanks. more

Open Question: why does my microphone records cpu activity instead of sound?

I have a weird microphone problem that I cannot figure out. I have a microphone in my laptop computer. Sometimes it works, and records sound normally. When it works normally, it continues to work until I restart. However, usually, about 70% of the time, it will not record external sound at all. But I noticed that whenever I open a program or do something else that uses the cpu, it records a steady stream of noise. It continues to act in this manner at least until until I restart. I think its related to the sound card (sigmatel) but the sound output is fine. The same thing happens if I try to plug in an external microphone into the microphone jack, and it happens the same way, with about the same failure rate, if I start in windows or linux. It makes no sense. Anyone know what's going on or how I can fix it? more

Open Question: Is my sound card broken?

Ok, I get no sound what so ever from my computer, even with external speakers plugged into the speaker jack. I've tried 1) formatting my computer 2) updating my driver 3) toggling with the volume. Is it possible, that when I plugged my small guitar amplifier into my mic jack and tried turning it on that it actually broke my sound card? It happened after I did that. Note it's my laptop. more

Voting Question: Programs crash when sound is used?

Hi, I recently upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7 Home Premium, and it has been working great for about two weeks, when suddenly I noticed a strange problem.. Whenever a program is required to play a sound, it freezes. And I get the "Program Not Responding" message. I've tested it with AIM, Firefox, Windows Media Player, Volume Controls, etc. and found out it really was caused by the need to use sound. Does this have something to do with my sound card? (which has been working fine since I got this laptop). I'm guessing that something is going wrong when programs try to access my sound card. I tried restarting my computer, and noticed that when trying to shut down, "explorer.exe" was freezing because it was trying to play the shutdown sound. Upon restart, the "startup noise" did not play either. And when the desktop was loading, I noticed a little error on the Volume icon in my system tray. I did not get to read what it said by mousing over it, but the icon looked like the normal icon, but with a red X going through it. (Different than when the volume is on mute, which has a circle with a slash through it) I restarted my computer again after trying to access sound options for my sound card (which resulted in Control Panel and related windows/programs to freeze) and to my surprise, the sound worked on startup and login, and programs stopped freezing and I was able to hear sounds again. So for now I'm hoping that the problem is fixed and will not recur, but I am still curious as to find out why this problem showed up in the first place. I am not sure if Windows 7 is the cause of this or not (I have heard of similar problems occurring on previous OS's), and I really hope it isn't. Can anyone help diagnose this problem? or know of any solutions, in case this does happen again? Thank you all in advance(Oh, yeah I have the 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium)EDIT: Found out it is a recurring problem. Happens randomly every now and then when I power on my laptop. My computer is fully updated, and so are my sound drivers. :[ more

Voting Question: Is my usb sound card causing blue screen (bsod)?

My laptop has been crashing during counter strike, and also once during watching a avi file. i gjust got the blue screen but i didnt get a chance to read what it said before it rebooted the comp. my video card drivers are up to date and there is no overheating as far as i can tell. before the game freezes i get this wierd noise.. kinda like lagged music.. but also sort of like a gun or motorbike.. the noise starts off quiet then increases in volume, then peaks and decreases and then goes away. this is why i think it might be the usb sound card.. i havent had this problem when i plug the headphones straight into the laptop. or is it CS? iv done virus and spyware scans and found nothing... thanks in advance!where abouts is the stop code? the blue screen is only up for a few seconds so if you can guide me where to look e.g. top of page or bottom.. also is it possible that a usb sound card can be the problem? cheers more

Open Question: What am I doing wrong when trying to use/view my camcorder files?

I have a JVC Enverio, specifically model number GZ-MS100RU. All of my videos are saved to a memory card. I've taken the memory card out, connected it to my computer and placed the video files onto the computer. Now here comes the strange part. I am able to view my files on the CD-DVD that they are copied to and also open them from the desktop shortcut using the window that pops up called "Windows Media Player." The icon that represents the files individually are called "MPEG." However, I am not able to open them on anything else as if the computer doesn't even recognize them. When trying to put them on my MySpace or even send them via e-mail to others, they don't even show up in the queue. I figured maybe I was using the wrong file name so I've attempted to convert them to either AVI or WMV however, since the computer doesn't seem to recognize them, I'm unable to do so. The even stranger thing is that when putting the CD into my laptop, it reads it as a blank CD and when I stick the memory card in the laptop, I can play my videos but there is no sound. I am not very technologically capable and this is my first attempt at downloading my camcorder to the computer. All of my files are of my little 3 year old daughter and it just seems kind of pointless to continue to use the thing unless I can share the videos with other family members. What am I doing wrong?? I'm at my last bit of wisdom and I just need someone who can tell me what to do. Thanks in advance for your courtesy. more

Will just any laptop with hdmi allow me to do this or do I have to get one with a sound/graphics card that supports 7.1 surround? I was told that any would work cause sound receivers up convert the sound but it sounded too good to be true so thought I'd ask. I have a 5-speaker set-up and sometimes special effects are louder in some of the speakers than others to give the sound movement effect. I want to retain this and couldn't believe that just "upconverting" would be enough. Thanks. more

Resolved Question: Will I be able to play sims 3 and spore on this laptop?

My main porpose for buying this laptop was for graphic design, but it would be nice to be able to play my sims 3 and spore on here, so I can go ahead and sell my desktop computer. (I haven't yet received the desktop, therefore I can't test it for myself yet) I'll post the specs below. I'm just hoping to run these games on the minimum settings if nothing else. I 've been doing it on this computer for a while, so I'm used to it. Resolved Question: Can you tell me about Linux? Also, what laptop brands are best?

I am a long time Mac user and extremely satisfied with Mac as an OS. However, the big drawback I see is the prices of Mac hardware. I have a /serious/ aversion to Windows. *shudder* I'll be going off to college in a few years and I'll want my own laptop. As someone who is reasonably good with software, I thought of running Linux on a non-Apple laptop. I have never tried the OS before but I have heard good things about its adaptability and streamlined interface. So, my main question is in a general sense, what do I need to know? Additionally, do I need to install it on top of Windows/Mac, or is it an OS in its own right? I think you download an .iso, right? How exactly does it all work after it's installed? Also, do you recommend any specific laptop brands? I'm a sucker for good looks, but also a pragmatist and a voracious down-loader, so I'll want an Intel core, plenty of memory, and ideally the ability to take a beating. I'll use it mostly for Internet browsing and downloading music/movies. I'm a musician, so a good sound card and speakers would be awesome. Thanks in advance for detailed answers! :) more

Resolved Question: Frequent Screen Freezing During Game-Play?

ISSUE: The current laptop computer that I have since day one during online game-play (World of Warcraft) have been freezing the screen. I'm able to move the mouse around, click spells, so on but the spells will not release or start casting until after the screen stops freezing. My screen does not go black, it stays current to what I did last. HOW I TRIED TO SOLVE IT: I've turned down all the settings video and sound then started playing to see if it would do it again. I've downloaded the video cards latest drivers (I know it's not the video card because it doesn't freeze on offline game-play). I've done an internet connection speed test with the results of down 9.62mb/s up .84mb/s ping 51ms to a place 50 miles away. All firewall and protection settings are off so I know it's not them. Could it be my connection type? I have Embarq service here in Kansas and they don't provide a line connection from the poles outside they provide it through a satellite in the back of each house that wants internet. Could it be the satellite connection? 5 points to the person who can solve this issue or provide me with the forums that give myself the answer as my own research seems to be lacking somewhere. Thank you. There is no rubber-banding effects. I don't have issues with any other high end games that are offline only online games. I'm really thinking that it's something to do with the internet connection. I'm trying to find out so when I buy Call of Duty I can actually play it without it kicking me offline. more

Voting Question: Upgrading RAM in my Toshiba Satellite L305-S5930.?

I got a Toshiba Satellite L305-S5930 Laptop for graduating HS. I'm going to college for Computer Programming and Game Design; and I think this might be a little underpowered. My computer specs are Processor: AMD Athalon X2 Dual-Core QL-64 [2-core(s)] 2.10 GHz (Model 3, stepping 1) Memory (RAM): 3.00GB System Type: 32-bit OS Graphics Card: ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics (256MB) System Type: X86 SM BIOS Version: 2.4 Running Vista I'm looking to possibly upgrade. It's got two RAM ports in it. I did a system scan and found that SLOT 1 = 1024MB and SLOT 2 = 2048MB. The system scanner said I (currently) have 3072MB RAM installed. But the thing that's odd to me is that it says that I could fit in 3145728MB. That just doesn't sound right to me. Can anyone tell me if this computer is particularly good? Hows the processor, as compared to other processors? more

Voting Question: Speakers not working after installing Windows 7 on my Toshiba Satellite laptop....HELP PLS!?!?!?!?

I have just recently created a partition on my laptop which had XP on it, and I installed Win 7 on the new partition (a fresh install). After installing all Win 7 updates, everything works great - apart from the sound. I don't get any sound AT ALL. I'm pretty sure that the music im playing is being registered with the sound card - because when I double click on speaker icon in the taskbar, it comes up with a changing green sound level - but no sound is coming out of my inbuilt speakers, or even my headphones when I plug those in..... I've already tried installing the latest drivers from both Realtek, and Toshiba, but to no avail. Can someone please point out what the problem might be? Your efforts are greatly appreciated =) Thanks. more
