Wireless Internet Laptops Questions asked

Open Question: Connecting to my wireless blu-ray dvd player using an AT&T laptop aircard?

I have an AT&T laptop air card that I use to connect to the internet. It plugs right into my laptop USB port & I get service anywhere. I just purchased a wireless blu-ray dvd player which has internet connectivity & netflix streaming. What device do I need to use my AT&T service for my blu-ray player? I'm getting confused between 3G routers, broadband modems w/ routers, etc. I noticed that to connect my blu-ray wirelessly, I'll have to purchase a Samsung adapter. So, if I purchase some kind of router, I'd like to connect it to the blu-ray using the LAN port, but the router should be able to connect to my wireless AT&T service .... ouch, my head hurts ... Thanks for any help!! more

Open Question: Lost my wireless network (internet) after format :(?

Just formatted my laptop and got windows XP home addition reinstalled. However, I now no longer have a the capability to connect to our wireless router as I had before. Since I have no additional hardware that I have added to the laptop I assume it is a built in wireless adapter. So, two questions. How do I find what kind of wireless adapter I have? (I cant seem to find a place that lists hardware I have in my laptop) And is there a place I can download the driver on one computer then save to a cd and transfer to this computer? I have also run across the problem of not being able to get a direct connection from the modem (hardwired) Thank You. more

Open Question: My wireless network connection does not have a valid IP configuration... how do I fix this?

I can connect to my wireless router, but there is no internet connectivity. When I run the troubleshoot option on my laptop, it says the issue is that the wireless network connection does not have a valid IP configuration. What can I do to fix this? I have already tried restarting my laptop, the desktop to which the router and modem are connected, and have turned the modem and router off and back on several times. Everything was working without a problem yesterday. more

Open Question: Need MAC address for wireless connection for TDK Global Freedom 5660 v.90?

Trying to set up wireless internet on a laptop that was just given to me (Dell Latitude CPi) and my router wants the MAC address off of the card. It says it's supposed to be 12 characters but all the numbers on the bottom of the card are 9 or 10 characters. Anyone know what the MAC address should be for TDK Global Freedom 5660 v.90 internet card? Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.Ok I got that information and put it on the router page using my desktop connected to the internet. Now I'm trying to figure out how to get the internet to work on the laptop. I have Windows 98 on it and not sure where to go to input the SSID so that it can connect to my router. more

Open Question: Router to Router? Zyxel to D-Link?

I don't know crap about these kinds of things so bear with me. I recently upgraded my internet(to a faster one) and these dudes from my isp provider came and replaced my old router with this: http://www.zyxel.com/web/product_family_detail.php?PC1indexflag=20040812093058&display=6241&CategoryGroupNo=E8734461-BB3D-4814-83B2-B069B04EB243 Yeah, I know it looks crap but anyway it only has 1 port at the back so I needed another router to connect my laptop to the internet. But the problem was the D-Link router didn't respond. I've been using this wireless router for about a year now without any problems. Is there an installation thing to do to configure my new router(the one the isp provided) to my wireless router(D-link)? Thanks.I can't actually "talk to" my router cause even thought I'm trying to go to 192.168.1.1 (default) it's not working, just white blank. And how do you change the address? more

Open Question: Xbox 360 System link question?

Here's the situation, im in Iraq right now and want to system link Xbox's with other soldiers on base...the internet service we have here is one of those system's where you have to sign-in with a username/password everytime you open IE...my Ethernet cable is simply plugged from my ethernet port on my laptop to the small ethernet port in the wall for connection to internet...When i system link with ppl in my same pad On Xbox 360, i plug the ethernet cable from the wall to my xbox...Now, i want to connect with ppl on the other side of base on XboX. I know that a wireless adapter on every xbox would work, but not all of us have one...so my question is, Can i set up a system link thorugh the ethernet cable AND still connect with other's using the wireless adapter at the SAME TIME? For Clearity, If "A" ,"B" and "C" are system linking through Ethenet Cables, can "D","E" and "F" connect with "A","B" and "C" useing a wireless adapter if "C" is the game Host and has a wireless adapter plugged in while he's system linking through Ethernet Cables???? P.S.- the game we're linking is COD:MW2....Go figure eh lol more

Open Question: is a wired lan connection give you a faster internet connection than a wireless connection?

i'm sorry for the dumb question, but sometimes i stream movies and would like to know if the connection would be faster on a Lan desktop internet connection for example. the reason i'm confused is when I go to Ookla.com and measure my speed on my wireless laptop, it says 6 mbps which is supposedly fast. thanks for any iinput you can provide. more

Open Question: How can I transfer a PC driver from a Mac to my PC without internet?

I had to reinstall Windows Vista Home Premium on my laptop, but there are a couple drivers missing and one of them is my ethernet driver, so it disables my wireless card and my ethernet connection. I downloaded the ethernet driver on my mac (.exe) file, and need to transfer it to my PC. I'm gonna get greedy when I ask this, but how can i transfer this file without internet on my PC, and no USB memory thingy. Thanks more

Open Question: Why would AT&T charge iPhone users twice?

There's no other explanation I can think of for this: I'd like someone to logically explain to me why AT&T would charge us iPhone users to take advantage of the long-awaited 'Internet Tethering' feature? It seems to me that Tethering was more of an Apple iPhone feature which boasted that you can use your iPhone as a cellular modem to get internet on your laptop. With that said, I'm already paying $30 per month for each of my iPhones (me + my wife = $60 per month) for internet service on our mobile devices. This is required even if you don't want to use the internet on the iPhone. Anyways, we all know that our current iPhone 3GS phones have the capabilities of tethering an internet connection to a laptop. So what's the reason its not working? Very simple; AT&T hasn't yet decided how much they're going to rip-off each iPhone user. What do I dare mean? Well, let me answer with a question: Is it fair to charge a customer for a service that they already have the necessary equipment & prerequisits for? Meaning, I have the device that would allow for tethering + I pay AT&T for unlimited Internet right now, so what on Earth can you possibly charge me additional for?!?! Please take your time before answering this question because we both know that the only answers I'll be given are pure bull waste. :womansurprised: -- A concerned longtime customer who pays enough for their wireless service.Brian; I read your response. All I ask is that you remember that AT&T is in NO WAY licensing me the internet. Who cares what or how much I use of it. That's all up to them to be prepared for bandwidth issues. If I purchase mobile web for $30, which can get me my email or even act as a product scanner / credit card terminal (just an example of somethings you can do with the iPhone) then I'm covered. Your philosophy would allow AT&T to start taxing the moneys I'm charging on my customer's credit cards since I did it over the iPhone on their network. This is outrageous & MARK MY WORDS: It's the early stages of the Internet Neutrality issues that so many are talking about. You'll see. It starts with this & ends with every one of your freedoms. more

Open Question: Why doesn't my wireless internet work on my iPod and laptop?

Open Question: Linux Disto Showdown...?

http://www.zegeniestudios.net. This is the site that started it all... Really it all goes back to the Ubuntu forums. When I took the quiz on this site it gave me a couple choices that they think would be good for me. I want the help of the Yahoo Answers community to help me choose which distribution they think would be best for me. I will give you my story then from there I will leave it to you guys. My story: A while back I saw a Youtube video about Ubuntu. it mentioned an OS called Linux. So, I did my research on Linux and said, "Hey! Lets give this Ubuntu a shot!" So I did and I ran into many errors. The main reason in the beginning was that I never tried to install another OS to my computer. then when I finally got it onto my desktop i thought about putting it on my laptop. did this got it on the first shot (woohoo). Then I ran into the problem of Ubuntu not picking up on my wireless card, drivers, etc. I got so frustrated i just went without Ubuntu completely. I un-installed it from my laptop and desktop. this left the GRUB loader there and still to this day I have no idea how to get it off. So for a while I had to see the word Ubuntu every time I booted my computers. I just gave in a little while ago and said to myslef that I would try again, but this time I wanted to do it right. I tried Ubuntu on my laptop (different from the last one), but still could not connect to the internet via wireless. So I set out on a quest to find which distribution would be better. I typed "Which Linux distro is right for me?" and it came up with the Ubuntu forums which lead me to the site above. From before, I had seen these following distros: Ubuntu, OpenSUSE, and Debian. When I took the quiz it told me that the following where right for me: Ubuntu, Debian, OpenSUSE, Linux Mint, Fedora, and Mandriva. I know a little Linux and I've messed with Ubuntu on my desktop so I know Ubuntu a little, but I want it on my laptop. I want a distro that I can fix my internet problems easily or have help from a guide helping me with it. I have a Dell Inspiron 1750 with a Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-card. I have Windows Vista Home Premium, Intel Core2 Duo CPU, 4.00 GB of RAM, with a 64-bit operating system. All this stuff, I have no idea if it will help you in anyway help me find which distro to use. If you need anymore info, email me. more

Open Question: How can I get around my hotel limiting my wireless internet speed?

Help! I'm stuck out of town for training the whole week and my laptop is pretty much my only entertainment, but the hotel is severely capping my speeds (to 500kbps down, 250 up). This makes any graphic heavy sites slow and even a three minute YouTube video takes 3-4 minutes to load. This is ridiculous. Is there any way to get around this cap and get faster speeds? more

Open Question: How to I reconnect my mac to the internet?

Open Question: how can i change the network settings on my canon mp620 printer?

I have a dell inspiron laptop and a canon mp620 wireless printer. When I first bought the printer, I lived on my own with my own internet router and wireless box, with a password and id that were my own. When setting up the printer, I set it to that network. Now I'm living in a different place using a different wireless network. My computer is set to accept both, but I can't figure out how to switch my printer over to the new network. I will eventually be going back on my own (so will have to switch it back to the original again) but I'm not too concerned about that. I still have all of the original cds and guide books but I can't seem to figure out what I'm supposed to do, because everything is geared towards first time set up. I tried reinstalling everything but that didn't seem to work either. Also, if it's easier I would be okay with just having it set up to be through the usb cord. I don't have to use the printer often enough for this to be a hassle. I'm just not sure how to do it. If anyone can help explain this to me without a lot of technical terms, that'd be awesome. thanks more

Open Question: I can't get online on my desktop, but I can on my laptop.?

I'm on my husband's laptop connected to our Cable America modem, so it's not wireless. When I open his network it says Internet next to Access, but on my desktop it says local only. How do I change that back to Internet so I can get back online? It sees the connection to the modem, but the globe is grey and it won't connect to it.Let me add that my desktop that's not connecting was connected to the broadband modem. My husband's laptop was connected to a wireless router. We no longer use that wireless router, so is this causing the problem? When I'm done with his laptop, I'll unplug the Ethernet cord and connect it to the back of my PC to try to connect it, but it's still not working. The tech won't come out here because the modem is fine. more

Open Question: If I password my laptop account, and someone hacks into my drive, can they read my files without my password?

My Norton 2009 antivirus keeps reporting that it has been blocking attempts to get into my computer whenever I am on our school departmental network. It would appear our local Script Kiddies are not satisfied with the wireless access we unnecessarily grant them by opening our departmental network so they can go online without begging us for permission. It seems some of them want to steal our personal information and use it against us- like account passwords, bank accounts, and such. This is not like schools in the Developed Countries, where you have rooms with hundreds of PCs connected to the internet- just for students to use. This is not like the countries where they BEG students to PLEASE take an interest in using computers. Those at the top of our infrastructure get off on denying services to as many of those who are beneath them as possible. The employees of every department have to pay a monthly subscription rate for the right to use the campus network and internet. Every person of department using the network had to pay money for their own LAN port to be installed. But some students don't care about all this, and see the Internet as some sort of Right that belongs to them. Others even go so far as to believe it their right to steal everyfink what ain't nailed down! I gotta know- if just the filenames on some of my files got out- I could be massively tooled here.No doubt, anyone could gain access to my hard drive if it was on an accessible network, but if I, the owner, have to use a password to be able to even see my files, let alone read them, how can even WINDOWS be so stupidly constructed that someone can just hack in and read anything they want, even my password? IF I WERE MAKING AN OPERATING SYSTEM, if someone hacked into my system, the first they they should see ought to be my two dozen-character login, before they could get to go anywhere else. They should not be able to locate my password file, run it through a decrypter, and totally analize my system, without my knowledge nor consent, nor even so much as a cigarette when it was all over. Does this mean that if I invented such a system, I would stand to become a billionaire? more

Open Question: Why is my internet so slow?

I have a Dell laptop that I do my homework on, and it's really fast, except the internet slows down. I have no idea why and would like to fix this. Some possible reasons that I can think of are that the router is downstairs and I'm upstairs (but the wireless connection manager always says I have at least a "good" connection). Another possible reason is that I listen to internet radio when I do my work. Could these things really slow my internet down that much, or do I have some other problem? more

Open Question: Laptop can't find wireless connections and says its because wireless is turned off?

I have a Toshiba Satellite Laptop and every now and then it says that it can't detect a wireless connection and when I diagnose the problem it says it is because the laptops wireless capabilities are turned off. The thing is, they aren't The switch on my laptop is lit up, meaning it's on. I have tried restarting my computer a few times, resetting my internet connection, but it still isn't picking up ANY wireless networks. The desktop that is broadcasting the internet connection is connected to the internet and has no problems. Sometimes my laptop will do this for a day or two and magically reconnect to the internet. I figured at first there was a problem with my wireless card or something, but the fact that it works most of the time makes me think that isn't the issue. Does anyone have any advice?? Thanks in advance!Still no luck =/ more
