Apple Macintosh Laptops Questions asked

Open Question: What is a good laptop for me?

Firstly, I will never ever ever even consider an Apple/Macintosh computer or whatever they are called!!! As you will see, I don't really know much of the correct terms etetera associated with laptops and internet but I will try! :L I would very much prefer to have Microsoft Wireless internet I would be taking around with me (school etc) Webcam USB ports I would be using it mostly for my school work. Another thing, for quite a while now I've been wanting the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 or 10v. But now I've entered year 11, I am way more focused on school and wasn't sure if this would be a good laptop. Any ideas? more

Voting Question: Macintosh vs PC laptop?

I'm going to be buying a new desktop and new computer soon. I'm pretty sure that I am going to go with a Doghouse systems desktop, but as far as laptops go, I am at a loss. I have used a mac laptop for 4-ish years now. While the OS isn't bad, the actual computer itself is miserable. Parts of it flake off, the speakers are almost shot, batteries barely work anymore even after replacing etc. etc. I thought about getting a PC laptop, considering that I am going to be getting a PC desktop, but I am at a loss as well. I don't know what companies are good, Doghouse systems are great for gaming, but what about for a multi-purpose laptop? With the wide range of companies out there, I'm not sure who I can trust. Should I just get a macbook pro (considering it has bootcamp now.) and hope that apple has made their computers better, or should I be looking elsewhere. I would really like objective answers, fan-boy-isms aren't appreciated. more

Resolved Question: Mac OS X, how much space do I have?

So I have a Mac OS X laptop, and I'm trying to install Sims 3 onto it. The installer says that Sims 3 is going to take up 6.1 GB of space on my computer. So first, I wanted to figure out exactly how much space I had available in the first place. So I looked at "About This Mac" under the Apple logo on the toolbar, and it says that it has "4GB of Memory". But I also looked in Finder and clicked the Macintosh HD and it said, "232.6 GB, 181.9 GB free". So how much space do I really have? And will it be enough for the Sims 3? Thank you! more

Voting Question: PROBLEM WITH ITUNES THAT NOT EVEN APPLE THEMSELVES CAN FIGURE OUT!?!?!?

ok, im guna try and make this as short as i can.... im on a mac osx ... version 10.4.10. its a macbookpro and probably a couple of years old now... when i go to the dock, i click on the itunes icon and it bounces 3-4 times then stops... and itunes doesnt open.... i click again... it bounces once... stops... and still nothing.... i called apple about this, they instructed me how to fully uninstall itunes so that i could download it again.... when it finished downloading, i went through the installation package, accepted the licencing agreement and the following messege appeared..... " You need about 229MB more free space on the destination volume. Deselect some packages or quit the installer to make more space available on the disk then start the installation again" Now i have backed up my itunes library on an external hardrive... ive then deleted ALL of my music on my laptop, also all my pictures and movies (presuming that i needed more space on my macintosh HD) but everytime i go to install itunes again, i get the same messege..... what is "destination volume"???? If there is anyone out on the world wide web that can solve this problem, then you evidentally have more intelligence then all 5 of the people i have spoken to at apple... PLEASE HELP, I NEED MY TUUUUNES! thanks for your time, Oliei have removed all USB inputs, i dont think that was the problem... im not, at any point, asked about destination volume, when i first download itunes it displays the box which asked you how you would like to run itunes.... first option is: Open With (and a scroll box appears next to this of how i would like to open it and with what programme) the other option is: Save File ( with no option of how, or where i would like to save it) I'm so confused by this, and clearly so are apple... more

Resolved Question: Can you edit this this essay about mac and pc compare and contrast?

Mac or PC? One day I went to Best Buy with my dad to look at laptops and computers. A majority of the laptops and computers I saw were Apple Macintoshes and Window PC’s. I asked my dad, “What are the differences and similarities between a Mac and a Pc?” He stated that an Apple Macintosh and Window Pc fundamentally do the same things, but have different features. For instance, the ease of use, hardware, and software are not precisely the same between a Mac and a Pc. The ease of use for Apple Mac has integrated video tutorials, a consistent experience across all applications, and a drag and drop based action. Despite the fact that, particular tasks such as moving your iTunes and iPhoto libraries to a hard drive can be perplexing. Plus, you can jeopardize losing your complete music collection if you don't follow the directions exactly right. Knowing that, a Window Pc has an uncontrollable barrage of error messages and freeze-ups. Although, currently a Window Pc has become less crash prone, but they are more customizable. Which one appears to be the preeminent preference to you? As hardware goes most computers have a tendency to fall into predictable Mac and PC lines. Apple is the only company making certified Mac computers, so you essentially have a choice between their seven models. Although, the all in one nature of nearly all the Mac computers means that custom add ons neighboring additional memory and third party graphics can be expensive, complicated and to some extent, limited. For a Pc the sky is the limit in terms of hardware, with everything from bargain basement, bulky desktops, professional laptops, everyday desktops and lavish notebooks. Plus, a Pc has an ample variety of price range, designs, sizes, and the inclusion of built in technologies such as mobile broadband and high def Blu-ray disc playback. The Software of an Apple Mac and a Windows Pc are particularly contradictory. Pc has an assorted extensive collection of software to choose from, for example Visual Studio, Camfrog, Realtek, Video Chat, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Internet Explorer, Nero, Photoshop, Windows Games, and Microsoft Office. Whereas Mac mostly has all Apple software for example, Apple Safari, , iLife, iWork, MobileMe, Aperture, Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Server, Logic Express, MacOSX, and Snow Leopard. However Apple Macs software is to some extent limited, but on Pc approximately everything will work. Both computers can in the end perform the similar operations. Even though, for every ten newfangled Web browsers or peer to peer file sharing programs that come out for the PC, there's just one ground-breaking, adaptable, and unwavering program for the Mac. So whatever happened to my dad and me at Best Buy? Turns out I have to wait until I get into college to get my own laptop or notebook! Well anyways, I still haven’t decided on which computer I think sounds better, although I’m leaning toward an Apple Mac. But, you never know, Apple Macs and Windows Pc’s are both great computers, although sometimes one of them is better at something than the other. Which computer did you pick, an Apple Mac or a Windows Pc?btw, im in 7th grade more

Voting Question: Is Apple Marketing to Dumb Users?

There are so many people I know in college, on yahoo answers, tech forums, and just uninformed people in general buying up Macintosh Notebooks because of the hype that follows with it. The only thing that I hear is; "hey how do I open this windows file on my mac?" or "how do I right click!?!?!?" They usually realize that OSX isn't the platform for them and end up using Windows as their main operating system which defeats the purpose of them owning a Mac. It seems that people are getting the wrong idea from Apple that OSX is simple enough that even the technologically-retarded crowd (probably 90%+ of people) can use it too. And the truth is that, IT'S NOT! I own a Macbook Air because of it's fast SSD, Battery Life, and the slim and light design. I do graphics design and photo-editing and this notebook does it surprisingly well with only 2GB's of DDR3. Even then, I realize that I could probably be doing the same thing with a much more inexpensive Dell that has much better specs. So here is what I'm really asking: Is Apple marketing to the sheep in our society who would buy up anything that is marketed well?(Apple does great marketing.) Do most people who buy Apple laptops now use them to their full potential or anywhere near it? (I would say no.) Is it ethical that Apple is still pushing the sales of these laptops to this market? I know business =/ ethics. Apple obviously knows where the money is. And Apple is known for their shady business practices. But I just want to see what you guys think. more

Voting Question: You can change DVD Disk region on Macintosh to match DVD only four times?

I want to play a DVD on my Apple laptop but as I put it into the DVD player a window came up, saying: "The disk region does not match the drive region. The drive region must be changed to play this disk." My current drive region is region 2 (Europe) and I was about to change it to region 1 (U.S.A.) when I noticed that it also said: "You can only change the drive region four more times" in RED writing. Does this mean I can only change it four more times in my laptop's entire life? Or just for today or as long as I'm playing this disk? Thank you in advance, Orinoco. more

Voting Question: Powerbook G4 white screen of death, tried everything with no luck?

A few days ago my powerbook g4 powerpc with mac os 10.5 froze. I held the power button down to shutdown and then pressed again to turn it back on. However, since then all I get is a blank white screen. I've tried many of the suggestions littered around message boards such as reset the pram with no luck. Holding the shift button to start in safe-mode has no effect. Holding down the option key brings up a screen with 3 icons: a reload symbol, a symbol for my Macintosh HD and a right arrow symbol. Clicking on the right arrow just takes me back to the white screen of death. Holding down apple-s to enter single-user mode has no effect. I can't find the install cd that came with my powerbook, can any 10.5 install cd I get my hands on work? Just out of desperation I tried a 10.5 upgrade cd with no effect. Also, I haven't tried command-option-o-f to reset nvram. If neither of these 2 remaining options work, is my laptop done for? Also, seeing that symbol for my HD, does that mean my HD is ok and it's something else? I was hoping worst case I could take my HD out and place inside an enclosure and connect to another machine. Any help is greatly appreciated.I bought this powerbook about 4 years ago so unfortunately no more warranty.Just tried resetting nvram through open firmware with no luck either. I guess my only chance is to hope that a 10.5 install cd will allow me to run disk utility. more

Resolved Question: Can I use Apples built in partition program to make a partition to put another operating system (Linux type)?

I want to put a linux type Operating System on my laptop for several reasons like the available programs in drafting. I also want to see how some web pages work in linux type browsers And finally I want more experience with linux type Operation Systems. Since this is a Macintosh G4 I think I am limited to two Linux type OS and am thinking of putting both on to see the differences and similarities along with any problems with programs either may have. I do not remember where the partition program is exactly as I write this but I have stumbled across it. I thought it was in system preferences but I was not able to find it with a quick glance before I wrote this question. The basic Question is will I be able to partition the Mac powerbook G4 with about 60 Gigs of Hard Drive space so that I can install the other Operating system(s) using the built in partition maker. I have OS 10.5.7 and do not remember where I saww the partitioning item so please tell me. Voting Question: Which laptop should I go for ?

Greetings This summer I anticipate on buying a new notebook, in order to replace my Acer Aspire 5100. I would like some opinions and or advice. Basically I am leaning towards something within the $2,000 range. I don't want to go above that, Ok, my needs are not extremely demanding. I need a system that is fairly small, but that will handle some somewhat demanding tasks. I need a system that will be able to handle casual gaming as well as some newer titles with decent settings. I want something that is fairly portable, light and able to last a while on battery. Lately, I've been searching the Internet and came across 2 systems that interest me. The first one is the Dell XP3 13'' Studio laptop. The second one is the Apple MacBook Pro 13'' I've read various reviews about the MBP 13'', however I didn't find much on the Dell XPS Studio 13''. What do you guys think ? On a side note, If I end up going with the Apple, this would be my first Macintosh computer. Thoughts and or adive ? Thanks Jordan more

Resolved Question: Are Apple/Macintosh computers programmed to die, like, say Epson printers are?

With Epson printers - and probably the others too - there is a certain number of copies or a certain age after which the programming in the chip says "I'm dead". You can get software to reset this, but if you do not, there is nothing you can do to continue using the printer. Does anyone know if Macintosh computers have any such inbuilt programming? I have had a few older laptops do a 'final fail' with what I considered to be very suspicious messages, but I'd be pleased to know if anyone has a real answer. Thanks for any help you can give.Note: Years ago I took an Epson printer apart, to find a non-rechargeable watch battery solidly mounted on the logic board - in a place where no one would normally expect to have to replace it. I asked Epson about the purpose of it, and they, of course, declined to comment. That was my first clue about the possibilities for planned obsolescence. Ref Apple: It is true that one can reset the Pram, but it seem that Apple could, if they wanted to, certainly put a small bit of flash memory somewhere on the mother board. Still, if no one has any information about such a practice, then perhaps they really do not do it. I do not remember the exact message when I last got a 'suspicious' final message, but it was after it had been off for a few years, I got something of a serious memory problem, and had gotten the same message on an older machine under similar circumstances. It may have been legitimate, but I have always wondered. more

Voting Question: Are Mac hardware components better quality than PC?

The Mac VS PC debate will likely go on forever. My question is this: When buying a Macintosh Computer (laptop or desktop) there is an obvious price premium. What does Mac claim that you are getting in terms of value for that price premium? It seems as that Mac is using almost identical components to some Dell systems. well i got a new macintosh hd last week, and today i finally got the chance to move my files from my old vista laptop, to my new mac. i was wondering, in moving my files from a vista pc to a mac, would the files somehow hurt my mac? i'm wondering because the sales person in the apple store told me that the only way a mac could get a virus or that sort, would be to to use window programs on it. by the way, i'm not really moving programs, only important pictures and a few word documents. please help, i don't want to damage my new mac in any way. more

Resolved Question: How to convert Apple G4 monitor (ADC) to use with VGA ports?

Hi, A guy just gave me his old Apple G4 cube monitor, which has an ADC adapter (30 pins + 4pins and the hyphen-pin in between the 4). Is there a way to convert this "ADC" adapter so I can plug it into the VGA port in my HP laptop? The ADC adapter looks like the top one on this webpage: http://developer.apple.com/documentation/Hardware/Developer_Notes/Macintosh_CPUs-G4/PowerMacG4/3Input-Output/chapter_4_section_12.html , and is a female. The VGA port on my laptop is a male, of course. Thanks! more
