I want to buy a laptop. I had a horrible experience with hp/compaq nx-7400 last time. Now I am looking for a different brand. HP, Dell, Apple, Sony, Toshiba are well known brands. While Samsung, Acer, Asus, Gateway, msi are relatively new brands. HP - Dont want to buy. Dell - I can not test it until I buy it and if I dont like it then returning is a problem. Sony - Its expensive b y almost $250 Apple - Expensive + OS is different I checked out Acer and Samsung. I was impressed with Samsung, but it comes with 32bit OS and not 64 bit. I am not sure what difference will this make. Secondly, I am not sure about the long term performance (After 3-4 years), Does it get heated too much with use of 2-3 hours ? I cheched Gateway also and it has almost all the features that Samsung has and is cheaper. But I am not sure of performance. Will it warm up too much which harms the body ? How will the different parts like hard drive, optical drive, charger, battery, keyboard will perform over long term ? With HP, over 3 years of use, charger is not working, optical drive is not working, hard drive is dead, battery is dead, keyboard is not typing properly. I want to make sure that these issues I dont face with the new laptop I buy. So which computer shall I opt for ?I know people who have been using their laptos for last 5 years and they dont face problems which I faced. Their laptos ae obsolete now, but still works fine. more

Recently i decided to trash my slow old PC and buy a new one with single wire all-in-one computer since i dont have too much space on my desk. Generally i use it for my small business work, like writing letters, spreadsheets and little email and internet use. I have been using DELL for a long time and i also have a DELL Inspiron laptop so i decided to look on DELL and found this Studio19ONE pretty neat and stylish with touchscreen and all that. I was ready to buy that but my wife who use Macbook and a big fan of MAC advised me to go for IMAC which is 21.5" (3" bigger screen than DELL) and i can get it cheaper than DELL but IMAC has no touchscreen. Now I am very confused as i can't decide which one i should go for ? Primarily i would be using it for my business purpose and i am reluctant to go for IMAC as i have never used it before and i m not sure how compatible it would be ? Why does this happen, and why is it so random? It has happened a few times in the last couple of weeks and sometimes I'm not even doing much, just using the internet or listening to music. Also why does it happen more often on some computers than others? I've never had this problem with my walmart cheap 3-year old dell desktop but it's happened many times on my $1700 gaming laptop. I want to start using Linux as an operating system, so I want a cheap laptop on which to install RedHat or something similar. Therefore, as I am not going to be using Windows or any other operating system, I want to get a laptop with no operating system installed (or a free operating system) to get the best value for my money. However, Dell insist that they do not sell any laptops with anything other than Windows 7 or Vista, HP have been very uncooperative and anything I have seen elsewhere that has no operating system is out of my price range (max £350, which is why the presence of an OS would have an affect on the quality of laptop that I am able to buy). I am trying to figure out what computer to buy my daughter for college. I want to get it now for her birthday so she can get used to the new windows 7 (she currently has vista). She uses it mostly for internet research, writing papers and downloading photos from digital camera. Voting Question: Windows 7 vs Streaming seemingly unique problem...?

I've searched high and low for an answer to my problem, and none seems to be found. I recently (meaning earlier today) bought a new Dell laptop with Windows 7 (64-bit) pre-installed on it. Seemed like a good deal, since the tech in the machine was ten bucks cheaper than going to Dell's website and ordering from them direct. The problem is a less-well-known one, in that I try and stream...well, anything, and my browser (either IE *or* Firefox) just freezes, "Not Responding". I've downloaded several things from Adobe, but even their home page will cause this to happen if I don't click on the software link quick enough. I've put ZoneAlarm's free firewall, and Avast's free Home Edition antivirus on this thing, both of which I have a good history with. Whenever I look for a similar problem, the solution is usually either an add-on enable/disable problem, or someone didn't have the right software, yet I have everything I've seen cause this problem to go away on it. I can surf everywhere without video or audio streaming just fine, but the moment I go to...say, YouTube, or Playlist.com, I get a browser freeze. Any ideas?-EDIT- I don't normally use IE, for those of you who think I'm actually that dumb. I use Firefox with Avast Home Edition and ZoneAlarm, running Ccleaner just about everytime I turn on the computer. I ran IE as a control because I hadn't added anything to it, and wanted to see if anything I added didn't mesh well with Win 7 more

Heart breaking as it is i know it would cost just as much to buy a new laptop then it would to get it repaired. Since im out of warranty i was thinking could i purchase a new warranty from dell wait a bit then claim i dropped the laptop. Of course i would have to also buy accident cover from dell so that they would repair it . Overall it would work out cheaper this way but do you think it would work, would dell get suspicious? Resolved Question: Why is my laptop so slow?

I got an Acer Aspire 5534 for Christmas and it is just shite. It's an upgrade from my Dell Inspiron e1405 technically, but that ran twice as fast with a fourth of the ram and no dedicated graphics. At least it had a Core 2 Duo. This one has 2GB or DDR2 ram, an AMD 64 TL-20 (complete crap), and an ATI Radeon HD3200 which is supposed to be a decent hybrid. I get like 15fps when I fullscreen youtube videos and it's basic response time for opening firefox or media player is horrendous. Would I be better off using my pirated Windows 7 32 bit? I think that on top of incredibly cheap hardware, it's straining with Windows 7 x64 which needs more than this laptop to run smoothly. I've tried using various PC speed ups and such and this thing is just crap. Sorry for ranting. Win7 x86 or x64? more

Voting Question: Could you recommend a laptop to me for under $600?

My cheap compaq just gave out on me after 5 years and now I am looking for another laptop for under $600. I was looking at the dell inspiron but I noticed that they have had a few bad reviews, however, all the bad reviews come from the mac book enthusiasts. Despite the macs are good.. I cannot afford one. I am debating between an Inspiron 14 or 15.. at best buy they told me the only difference was size, is that true? I was also looking at one Inspiron with 250gb hard rive and another with 320gb.. would the extra gbs really matter if I store most of my stuff on an external hard drive? I do a lot of photography but I plan on storing most my copies on the external... Could anyone recommend which Inspiron is better 14 or 15? I do not need anything fancy, just something to type my reports and transfer my photos.. and occasionaly get on the net. If you could recommend any laptop at all that is in my price range and will run well (I really don't care about who made it as long as it works)... I would really appreciate it. Thanks! more

Ok so here is what I want. I need a laptop that is a cheap one to start out with, say $500-700 but that has like the option to uber up the video card and display and All that good stuff. I would guess that this would most likely be a Dell, but if i like go to the side and check the box for video cards, all I get is like alienware. Now i'm dang sure that even if I need the same secs they have I can get them much cheaper just by not paying for the brand. So if anyone could give me a link to a nice cheap laptop on like Dell.com that I can pick the best video card option and be able to play wow on high and hopefully max setting with 60fps or whatever is the max. Voting Question: Should I buy a new dell charger or a universal one?

So the brick to my dell inspiron suddenly stopped working and my mother foolishly sent it to geek squad without my knowing. Initially I was under the assumption that she was going to best buy to replace the charger utilizing our warranty...apparently the warranty didn't cover it, figures. So geeksquad takes a look at it and tells her along the lines that apparently the internal battery is broken too. So they say that the warranty will cover that and I don't see my laptop for a good two weeks. They called back today and told me that I have to replace something in the laptop for $600. That just really pissed me off because that is essentially buying a new freaking laptop. I kindly told the guy that I just wanted the brick replaced but he insisted that I should pay an extra $600 to have it fixed. I kept refusing, and he finally withdrew. Finally he told me that I should buy a dell charger as oppose to a universal one, which apparently is $100 more. He told me that the dell will run with the universal charger, but the battery will not charge. Is this true? So do I have to buy a dell charger as oppose to a cheaper universal one? I'm so infuriated right now. Having to wait two weeks just to be told that I have to pay $600. more

Ok, here's the deal: I've saved up a bit of money and I need a new computer. I was looking at the Dell and hp websites and thought I decided on one, until my friend gave me the idea off building a computer. I read a few guides on what parts I need, and I found it was quite a bit cheaper than buying a prebuilt computer. One thing I'm scared of is that I put together everything and it doesn't work, so all that money goes down the drain. So how hard is it to put together a computer? I've opened up my old laptop a few times, so I have a little bit of experience. And also, should I risk building a computer, or should I simply buy one for more money? more

I need something that is capable of taking notes, accessing the internet(so wifi) and has a duel processor-a webcam is a bonus, as I'd be able to record my lectures for future review. I also plan on downloading my books onto the laptop(ebook format) so I'm going to need as much space as possible. Software doesn't really mater, my campus offers it for free. my budget is ---maxed--- at $500 (USD). PLEASE post a link to the site/laptop that you recommend. I've already looked around the Dell and Gateway websites, if you want to give me an opinion on a laptop from one of the two manufactures, feel free. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop. A few months ago my Dell battery stopped charging. I went to the site to ordcer a new one, not knowing how exspensive it would be. I decided to order one from Ebay that was compatible, but a lot cheaper. Once I received the battery it wouldn't charge either, so I exchanged it for another one. I know I'm being cheap but I'm a mother of three, working part time and a full time student; needless to say my income is spread pretty thin. I can't help but believe that Dell has something installed in my laptop where only their batteries will work. IS THERE A WAY AROUND THIS? PLEASE HELP. more

Hi, I have found that buying a laptop from ebay sometimes is cheaper than from manufacturer. lets say dell laptop, especially when the sellers provide auction. But I have also found that many sellers have 0 feedback or just registered ebay. And some bidders also have 0 feedback. I wonder whether they are reliable or they just want to steal money. Okay so I have a Dell Inspiron 1505 laptop that I've had for a couple of years, and its kind of a piece. Its just really slow at times, my battery wont last 5 seconds unplugged, and it basically sucks. So recently I have been thinking about just buying a new laptop but I've been thinking that maybe it will be cheaper to purchase windows 7, wipe my computer clean, and buy a new battery. So my question is.. do you think that downloading windows 7 will wipe out my computer and have it running better? Im just worried im going to spend that money and my computer will still be crappy. I know its probably hard to decide not knowing my computer, but which should I do.. spend the money for a new laptop? Or save a little and just try to fix mine. more
