Open Question: Is putting a new cover on your laptop easy?

I have a Dell Studio 1535 in Plum. I dropped it a few months back (it was in a case... but still) and the corner chipped off of it from the impact going directly to it. Works great, but on the left hand corner of the top cover, it chipped off. Seems to be getting worse with time and squeaky a lot on the non-broken side because I think it's compensating for the side that was chipped. I bought a replacement cover and I am not sure how complicated (or risk for messing the entire computer up) the repair would be. My father-in-law is a computer programmer and works with their repairs a lot, so thinking of having him try to do it. more

Open Question: Dell Inspiron 8500 does not boot up?

Hi, My Inspiron 8500 laptop does not boot. All three leds (num,caps,scroll) lights up, also the power led lights up and I can hear the speaker for a moment then after nothing happens. Lights goes off. I tried reseating all the cards. I tried a spare psu. Tried with a replacement memory module. Nothing helped. I am thinking about a dead motherboard but in this case can the leds still light up? Any help is appreciated. Thank youIt doesn't post. When I bought my Dell laptop, a bunch of CD's, including the Roxio Creator, came with it. Because of viruses and some other mishaps, I had to get my computer fixed twice, in which all files, programs, etc. were deleted twice, including Roxio. For some reason, I can't seem to install it the third time. Is it because I can only install it three times or something else? I used to have Windows XP, but I think the person who fixed my computer used an older version of Windows. Perhaps that was the case? I don't know, but I would really like to be able to install this. more

Hello people, I have a question and I hope someone can give me an helpful answer. I have a SONY VAIO CS11S/Q laptop that I purchased less than a year ago at a computershop here in the Netherlands for 800 Euros, it has a 2 year warranty but the warranty had been extended 2 extra months because this SONY VAIO CS series of notebooks has a manufacturing defect in the fan. This notebook had been sent to the sony repair center twice already in a 6 months span. Im so frustrated at sony now since just last week I received the notebook from their repair center somewhere in the UK(the last time it was set to germany) and noticed there were scratches on the glossy lid (a lot of em). But sony refused to acknowledge saying that those scratches were there already when I sent it in. I explained to them that the notebook had been sent twice to them twice for the same EXACT issue (defective fan, the fan would sound like a lawnmowner, and sounds as if something is stuck in it, the first time I had to sent it in the fan sounded weird and stopped working). Sony customer support sucks! I hope I had purchased a Dell or Asus laptop instead than this overpriced piece of plastic. I told sony that their are dozens of people having the same exact issue. Just go to youtube or google and input SONY VAIO CS FAN ISSUE and you would see forums and videos uplaoded by users having the same issue with their Sony Vaios. I asked that sony customer support agent, what would sony do for me if in case I had to send this thing for the third time again for the same exact issue. Then the woman answered that sony would just replace the fan and send it back to me and she refused to put her supervisor on the line. Unbelievable. I'm now worried in sending this thing back to sony for repair in case the fan becomes defective again since they might scratch the glossy surface more. Any advice? Please no sarcastic answers. I either want a dell mini 10v or dell mini 11z or macbook pro. Which is better? I like how the dells are cheaper and still a good laptop but they dont have a cd thingy and i kinda wanted one. i know you can get usb cd roms but w/e. On the other hand, macs are reallllly expensive but in some cases worth it. They have a lot more features and i really like the way garage band works. I dont know if just the features is enough. I have had Comcast as my Internet Provider for a little while now. Recently I've been having some problems connecting to to the Internet on my laptop specifically. I've connected it to an older PC I had lying around and its working just fine. I know the laptop is getting old, and I definitely need to replace it, but the PC is older and hasn't been in use for years. And I really need service on the laptop right now because it has capabilities that my PC just cannot handle. So why it is working on my PC but not my laptop? So I'm planning to get a laptop, most likely a dell m6400 or m6500. These laptops have two and three hard drive bays respectively. The price for upgrading them through dell is a bit higher than i think it should be. My plan was to get non-dell HDDs that are less expensive and put them in these bays instead of getting the dell upgrades. Here are my questions 1) Is this even possible? I was thinking that perhaps there was a proprietary case surrounding the hard drive that would allow it to fit snug in the bay. 2) If it is possible, would i be able to take any hard drive with the same diameter and connector and plug it in? 3) Would anyone happen to know the size and type of connection used on the m6400/m6500 workstations? more

Programs like games work, but sites like youtube and programs like itunes won't play music or make sound come out or my speakers or headphones if i plug them in. My parents bought me an brand new HP Desktop Computer back on the black friday sales to replace my old 2001 dell dimension desktop computer. I actually love my new HP computer better because it more reliable and is faster and much better and because it has the recovery option disk just in case you have a problem and you have to reinstall windows, it would restore it to the factory image settings. Dell doesn't have the recovery option which would result in a complete loss of your factory image settings like your games that the factory installed and your burning softwares and stuffs. But the new computer has Windows 7 which is better than Windows Xp, it has the new Internet Explorer 8 which it says is more secured and better but is it better than the previous version of Internet Explorer 7 ??? Do you think Internet Explorer 8 is better than the previous version ?? My father still has Windows XP so he uses Mozilla Firefox but everytime he gets on my computer he is saying wow ! about Internet Explorer 8. So has Internet Explorer 8 appears to be better ?? I actually prefer it more so i uninstalled Firefox on my new computer. I also have a laptop that i use for college that also has Internet Explorer 8 on Windows Vista. Voting Question: How do i create recovery disks on my dell laptop?

I recently got a dell laptop, and when i tried to make recovery disks; in case of a critical hardware failure, via dell datasafe it said that either it had failed to create the disks or i canceled it. Thinking nothing of it i tried over and over again but the same thing happened. So i read on the internet that if i type in the search bar in the start menu Backup and Restore that another way to make recovery disks will be on my laptop. So i done the alternative way which only used one disk which made me wonder if it had actually worked since usually it would take 2 or more disks. And now i keep getting an message saying i still haven't made recovery disks. So i tried once again via dell datasafe but the same thing happened over and over again. Please someone help! more

Resolved Question: Can I set-up dual monitor on a Dell Insppiron 2200?

I have a Lenovo Ideapad windows 7 this supports dual monitor. Someone just gave me a Dell Inspiron 2200 windows XP running 1gb ram and Intel GMA 900 integrated Graphics with 128mb shared memory. I been reading as much info as I can find. Both laptop have VGA connectors but I think this Dell does not support dual monitor or its just not setup right (i hope that's the case) When I check my display property settings the monitor picture does not have the 1 and 2 options like the ideapad "lemcomputers.com mentions that Intel GMA 900 graphics is Intel’s first desktop platform to support Dual Independent Display technology." which makes me wonder (w***th*f****) sorry guys a little frustrated, help. Resolved Question: thinking of buying a new laptop?

I'm thinking about buying a new laptop as my current one (Dell Latitude D610) just runs really slow despite having the majority of files/programs stored on an external hard drive and the regular running of a registry cleaner, disk cleanup, and disk defragmenter. I've used the system restore disk previously to restore my laptop back to the original configuration but it didnt help much. How would I know what laptop is best for me? I'm looking for something relatively inexpensive but one with perhaps a bigger internal hard drive and definitely more than 1 gb of ram. Also if ram would be my problem as may be the case, how would i install more ram? I have a spare gb of ram but have no clue as to how i would install it. Whats the difference between a laptop and notebook/netbook? any suggestions on the ram and/or how to search for a new laptop?relatively inexpensive= $400 or under I use my laptop everyday for surfing the web, playing games online (facebook/pogo) and I download music to my external hard drive. more

Voting Question: Dell laptop crashed again... what now?

A while back, I believe my Dell XPS M140 crashed. I got the blue screen of death first, and then that black screen that asks you if you want to restart normally or in safe mode, except that no matter which one you chose, it faked you out and pretended it was starting up, but just ended back up on that black screen...over and over again. Anyway, I had a friend look at it, and he re-did the whole thing. I know nothing about computers, but I believe he wiped out my whole system and started new. He installed windows again and was able to save all my old files. So with the revived system, he copied back all those files which he saved for me on his external, and put it back on the computer to the D drive. He said it was something like just in case it crashes again. Since then, I've tried being really careful and keeping an antivirus program on my computer, but I think I got a google re-direct virus and it crashed again. I got the blue screen and then that thing again where it doesn't reboot in any modes. What do you think I should do now? If i tried to pay someone to fix this, will it be really expensive? At the least, I'm not even worried about being able to use the computer again. I just want the files in my D drive back. What do you think the problem is and what should I do now? Recently, my computers {five of them} were remotely controlled by Microsoft of "Microsoft Way, Redmond Washington". Interestingly enough, this is the same address for The Department of Homeland Defense. {I am a scientist, {not a spelling bee champ} and don't have time for spell checks, excuse my tremor, it causes typos}. I am conducting research on the fact that gasoline in our drinking water is poisoning us and causes Diabetes Type 1 and 2, and that certain Cancers are the same disease in an advanced stage. It is quite simple to give healthy rats a few drops of gasoline in the drinking water for a few weeks and USE A GLUCOSE METER TO DETERMINE THAT GASOLINE WILL INDUCE DIABETES... AND CANCER! THAT PART BEING OUT OF THE WAY, I am surmising that our Government does not want people to know this, hence the seven thousand dollars worth of destroyed computer equipment I now own. The BIOS was altered, and a new partition added, {E:\ DRIVE} , that is impossible just about to repartition, even using a utility like Disk Genius. You actually have to manually reformat the HD with a complicated series of CMD commands and sometimes that doesn't work. I believe it is possible to damage a computer with software, as evidenced by my now defunct three Dell 1521's, a Dell Inspiron Laptop, and an Inspiron 2500 Desktop. This programming is so tenacious that it will actually burn a copy onto the operating System Disk and reinstall to a new E:\ DRIVE. This is where the dammage occurs. I have the hard copy printouts AND A NOVELTY COMPUTER THAT WILL REMOTELY CONTROL ITSELF, Thanks to the copy of Microsoft Windows Executive Suite, a program designed by Microsoft for Microsoft Executives to remotely control any computer. I am quite certain that I can prove this as easily as I can prove the case of "Gasoline Induced Diabetes". I believe that the Dpt of Homeland Defense destroyed my computers to supress my research. If anybody knows how to remove this programming without tearing up the affected machine, please enlighten me, as I have been trying to do this for the last five years. more

Less than 24 hours ago I got a brand new Dell Inspiron, (with windows7 if it matters) and when I am in the middle of doing something, everything randomly freezes and starts making an obnoxious screeching sound and none of the keys will work, so I end up having to press the power button, harming my computer. Any advice or suggestions to what may be wrong? I usually have about four different windows open at once, I'm going to try and do that less in case it might be overloading. Voting Question: Blue Screen of Death on Boot Up. Battery Problem?

When I boot up my laptop, it goes to a black screen that says that Windows didn't start successfully and lets me either start with safe mode, use the last known good configuration, or start windows normally. The last two just take me to the blue screen of death, and when I try using safe mode, it never loads. :/ It seems like a stretch, but for some reason I suspect it might be the battery that has issues? Back last year, I'd get a warning that the battery is reaching the end of its usable life, and for the past few months, my laptop's been telling me that I need to replace the battery. My parents don't think this is the case, as we have the laptop plugged into the wall (but if this is the case, why is the battery power still being used and says I need to place the battery??). A dying battery could slip below the critical voltage level needed to maintain system information, but like I said, it seems like a stretch. The laptop was working fine yesterday night too. The model is a Dell Latitude D520. Can the dying battery be causing the blue screen of death? Is my hard drive shot? What can I do to fix my laptop? :/I CAN'T get into safe mode. I tried. I bunch of text appears on screen, and it never moves past that screen. There's no error code on the blue screen of death. It just gives me the "A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down... If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer..." No error code or anything.There's a "STOP: 0x0000007E (0xC000001D, 0x80537008, 0xF79E03B8, 0F79E00B4)" message on the BSOD. That's the closest thing to an error code. more

Hi everyone. Here is a quick story to get you caught up with my situation. I bought a used computer from a store a couple months ago. A couple days ago, I got a virus on the computer, and I blue screened, so I had to reformat. Once the reformatting was done and Windows XP Home was reinstalled, I tried to open the internet and I had no internet. I am guessing that this is because when I reformatted, I wiped the drivers off the computer as well. My problem is, is that because I bought it from a used computer store, I didn't get any software to install drivers back on. Now I don't know what to do. I have a Dell, Pentium 4 Intel. I took the case off, and read one of the chips in the motherboard, it said "Broadcom BCM575" Im guessing that's the internet card. So, how do I get a driver for that, and how and where would I extract it onto the computer? Any help would be greatly appreciated. By the way, in case anyone is wondering, im on a laptop right now lol.How do I download drivers if I don't have access to the internet on the computer? more

Voting Question: Every time I unplug my laptop, it shuts down?

It only turns on when it is plugged in and as soon as you take/the charger falls out it turns off. When it is on and plugged in the battery icon says 'No battery is detected." I have tried to buying it a new charger but the problem remains, therefore it's probably the laptop. Unfortunately I know pretty much nothing about these kind of problems and need your help! It's a Dell Inspiron 6400 in case that is relevant. Basically why isn't it charging and what can I do? Thanks more

Hi, I am using a Dell XPS M1330 (I think) Yesterday evening my Laptop crashed and I had to turn it off by holding the on button. I do not know why it crashed- about an hour beforehand I installed the Microsoft video editor software and uploaded a video to Youtube while listening to music when it crashed, and that was about all I did yesterday. Now it only starts up in safe mode. The very first screen upon turning the laptop on comes up properly but there are fairly small dot on the screen. Please help me diagnose and sort out this problem! PS. I have bought an external harddrive in case I need to just wipe my computer's hard drive and basically reinstall everything. Resolved Question: Need to remove a virus. Nothing works. What do I do?

Okay. System restore does not work. I can't run any anti-spyware programs even in safe mode, even when I download and install them on a different computer, rename them, and move them onto my computer with a flash drive. I turned off system restore and that didn't help at all. I went to "add or remove programs" and checked everything in there and I can't find anything there that shouldn't be or is unsafe (I checked a few websites for the names I didn't know). I'm not sure what it is or what I can do about it, and I don't want to pay geek squad $200 for them to fix it. Heres whats actually happening with my computer. My computer starts up normally, but Spyware terminator fails to open. Then it freezes up after about 15 minutes. I'm pretty sure it must be a virus because of all the anti-spyware stuff that won't even open or install. I really don't know what to do, and would very much appreciate any help anyone could give me. I am getting a new laptop and I like the dell studio laptops. I currently have a 15.6" laptop, but I find it too big and not as easy to fit in cases to bring it places, so I am interested in the 14" dell studio laptops. They have two, the dell studio 14z and the dell studio 14. I also saw the dell studio 1458 in a magazine, and I figured it was just the same as the 14, but it is a different price in the magazine then it is on the website. If you could tell me if the 1458 and the 14 are different and if so what are the differences, and the difference between the 14/1458 and the 14z, that would be great! I am going to buy a new laptop in the near future. I want it for school (so internet and office) and for gaming - one game in particular, WOW. I have already picked out the computer I want from Dell and the only problem is the video card that comes with it. It is "Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500MHD". I don't know jack about inner workings of computers or anything so I'm really confused on whether this will suffice or not. I could not find this card listed on the WOW webpage for supported video cards. The page lists supported and not supported cards and this was not on any list. However, from the user reviews on the computer I gathered that this card was not good for gaming. Now I plan to just buy a video card separate but I don't know anything about them! I don't know which one to pick or how to find out if it will work with the computer or anything. Help me! And I almost forgot, I would like to spend $100-$300 on the card. PS WOW recommends ATI Radeon 7200 or VNIDIA GeForce 7600 GT class card or better. And I would prefer to order the video card from the dell website at the same time I order my computer. Voting Question: Why can't I open email attachments from my work email on my new laptop?

I recently purchased a Dell Inspiron laptop that runs Windows 7. When I view my work email from my laptop, I am not able to open any attachments people send me. When I open the email and click on the attachment, the program (Word, Excel, etc.) opens up, but then I receive an error message that says, "There was a problem sending a message to the program." and the document will not open. I am able to open the documents on my desktop, but I don't know why I can't open them on my desktop. My work email is viewed through a program called Lotus Notes...or in this case, Remote Lotus Notes, since I am accessing it from home. I contacted Dell Chat Support and was told that because it is a software issue and not a hardware issue, I would have to pay for their help and I don't want to have to do that. I've had my pink dell inspiron for a little over a month. I stumbled over it one time but the damage was liveable- there appeared to be a splatter on the inside near the top of the screen. Well, a week or so ago, my bunny knocked it over when it was in a recliner. Now, the screen shakes vertically constantly. It's verry hard to function with the screen constantly shaking! Hi, I have an Alienware(not DELL) area 51 m15x laptop which i had purchased from USA. Two days back the dedicated graphics card has stopped working meaning when i boot my system through the dedicated graphics card (NVIDIA 9800M GT) the initial bios logo itself is not getting displayed but i can still hear my windows logging in from the sounds. Just no display, whereas i can boot my system through the integrated graphics card situated in the mobo.
