Voting Question: Dell Inspiron E1705 Problems?

4 or maybe 5 year old laptop has been working fine up until now. Took it along on vacation to Las Vegas and suddenly stopped working. Pressing the power button all the lights turn green and the fan starts turning, but the screen stays black. Nothing shows up. Pressing buttons doesn't do anything no sounds no display...nothing at all. It works sometimes when you leave it alone for a while or when you stick it right next to the air conditioner for a couple of minutes (weird huh). There are also lines or stripes on the screen which indicates that the graphics card might be going bad. Happens in Bios and in Windows. Googling e1705 graphics card, i found that the graphics card is integrated and cannot be changed. I'm not sure if this is true, but i will be opening the computer up to check sometime. To make sure that it wasn't Windows 7 that was causing the problem ( got an "nvidia kernel has stopped responding and has successfully recovered" error right before this started happening), I popped in the Windows cd and reformatted the computer. the installation goes fine until it has to restart. Every time, it restarts to a black screen. if I stick it next to the air conditioner for a while and try again, it asks if i want to start windows normally or in safe mode. I choose normally and the setup continues. Then I get an error that windows either shut down unexpectedly or the setup had an error. It then says that setup will continue after restarting the computer. Then the same thing happens over and over again. I tried restarting the entire process and deleting the partitions again to no success. more

I have a dell inspiron e1705 laptop, that i bought new about 4 years ago. I was interested in getting a new computer but then i saw in the stores that they sell parts for pretty cheap. So i was wondering if i should get a new computer, or just buy some new hardware for my laptop to make it like new? And if so what should i buy to make it good? Resolved Question: All my USB ports are working intermittently SO FRUSTRATING how can I solve this issue?

I have a Dell Inspiron e1705 laptop and all of a sudden a few weeks ago all my usb ports just started working intermittently. It would recognize the mouse, then not, then recognize again then not, over and over. Sometimes it lasts longer and sometimes it will just stop recognizing the mouse all together and I have to replug it. Needless to say, this makes gaming impossible.Oh and its NOT the mouse. Voting Question: Dell E1705 Laptop with choppy streaming video?

I just upgraded from 1 gig to 4 gigs of ram. System now shows 3062 meg of memory. Streaming video used to be no problem with 1 gig of ram. Any suggestions?Update: Thanks for the advice Jenn. I tested the bandwidth on my laptop (wireless) and I got a 570 download speed. I tested it on my desktop and got a 2600 downlaod speed. So the cable speed is plenty fast. Plenty of RAM in my laptop. Voting Question: Sims 3 crashed my comp, then I had to reinstall windows, should I reinstall?

I had Sims 3 on my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop (which is around 5 years old) and played it around 5-10 times before it started having problems, like it would crash during the game. At one point, I think it crashed the computer because it shut down and when I tried to restart a blue screen would come up. I'm not sure what the guy said since I wasn't there, but my dad went to sort out the problem at best buy and we had to re-install Windows XP. At the time there were was some spyware I think as well as various programs taking up space. I've been wanting to re-install it onto my laptop, but I'm not sure because it cost $50 to re-install the OS (don't know where the CD's are).Also, my computer meets and exceeds all of the requirements for the game. more

Voting Question: What would make my laptop's USB ports stop working and can I fix them?

Inspiron e1705. Just got a new battery a few weeks ago. Last night, I was running a long virus scan and i didn't want to overcharge the battery, so I took out the battery while plugged in with the AC adapter. This morning, my laptop won't run without an AC adapter. As if the battery didn't exist. and about half an hour ago, it was on standby, yet the battery light was flashing orange as if it was low on power. Sometimes, it will flash even if its plugged in. I removed the hard drive from my Dell laptop and used a special USB cable to connect it to another computer to get some data off it. I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop. Recently, it has been giving me problems. Whenever I try to watch a video on hulu or whatever the video becomes choppy when I use the "full screen" option. I just updated my drivers and the video still doesn't play correctly. The audio plays normally, but the video is slow and choppy. Resolved Question: What happens if I don't send back my broken laptop on a Dell system exchange?

I had an e1705 dell laptop for a little less than 4 years now with the extended waranty. It started having problems with sound, they send a repairman 4 times, had me on dell tech support for hours, and then they told me that since my laptop was obsolete I had the option of sending it to them to be repaired or getting a replacement laptop. I received the replacement laptop and I'm very happy with it but heres the question, what happens if I don't send back the old laptop? Even though it doesn't have sound it'd be much better than the broken down computer my friend is using. Will they pursue me on this even though they told me it's obsolte? They've sent me replacement chargers before and I never sent back the broken ones and they never said anything about it. Would they warn me before taking any kind of actions against me? more

I recently for-mated my dell inspiron e1705 to factory defaults. Shortly before i did the format i upgraded from xp which came on the computer to windows vista. After formatting my computer i apparently did not validate xp before immediately installing vista back on my computer. Now when i start my computer it asks me to authenticate. I tried putting in my windows vista product key and it will not work says that it can only be used for upgrades not clean installs. I also tried putting in the windows xp product key on the back of my laptop and that also does not work. Of course dell didn't send me a system restore cd with my computer. If im correct i need to start from scratch reformat the computer make sure i authenticate xp then install vista again but none of the combinations of buttons i've found online to access the secret partition dells have for ex ctrl f11 or ctrl f12 or f8 im running out of ideas my warranty is up with dell so i am trying to take care of this problem myself without spending hours on the phone with someone in a different country.if anyone has any suggestions please let me know i would greatly appreciate it more

I have a dell inspiron E1705 laptop that is 4 years old. Yesterday, it froze and I had to hold down the power button to turn it off. Now everytime I start it, it goes throught the password page and all the way to the main page with my icons and freezes. Everythin looks fine but the cursor is unable to click on anything and it sometimes beeps once and completely freezes. I have tried to start it in safe mode. but it freezes with a black screen when I try that. Any ideas? The only thing that pops up admormally is (transferAgent.exe which says it failed to initialize properly). Can I get a harddrive case to make it into an external in order to get some files off of it? That is my biggest problem because I need two small files off of it by Monday. Thanks alot! more

Hi, I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 purchased a few years ago. 3 months ago I accidentally poured some orange juice and it died and wouldn't power on. Initially I thought it wouldn't be able to be saved, but I decided to try to play around with it and take the entire thing apart piece by piece and clean it with deionized water. It powered on and is working fine, except that now it only works PLUGGED IN, if i so much as unplug the power cord from the laptop it dies. Interestingly enough while it's on I can take the battery out without it dying as long as its plugged in. There used to be a orange blinking light on the power source but after a few days it stopped. I'm t hinking new battery, but anyone else think otherwise? ie. mobo, or powercord?actually when i take the battery out while it's plugged in and put it back in after a minute a continuous blinking orange light on the power light happens more

On my Dell laptop E1705 it is giving me an error message saying that the device in the system modular bay cannot be identified. It may not be completely inserted. There are steps that I folIow to resolve the issue, but it keeps bringing me back to that same error screen. I hit escape to ignore and continue but then I get another error saying that Windows has been shut down to protect my computer with a 'Stop" code of 0x00000050. I called Dell and I keep getting different ansers. One person said my operating system was bad and I needed to pay them 250.00. One person said my DVD drive was bad I needed to pay 199.00. One person said it was a virus. They are making me crazy. i have an older laptop ( dell inspiron e1705 ) and it seems that even when i go just a few days it has over 40% fragmentation. i use '' smart defrag '' from iobit but why do i have this level of fragmentation in just a few days? is it the smaller hard drive? I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 and I am trying to wipe it because its cluttered, a lot of things won't uninstall and it's slow. I know that at the blue dell bar screen when you first turn it on, you can do Ctrl F11 because I've done that before but this laptop is different. When you first turn it on, the big Dell loading screen pops up and loads. Then, instead of the BIOS screen, I guess its called, this wierd screen pops up EVERY time that says "please select the operating system to start:" It gives me two options. Both options say "Windows XP Media Center Edition". I press one and it starts windows normally. So where can I possibly do the Ctrl F11 and if I can't how else can I wipe it? more

I recently acquired a used Dell E1705/9400 and everything was and is in working order. However, the sound is a bit perplexing: I have sound whenever I connect a set of earphones but whenever I disconnect them I have no sound via the external speakers. In other words, the external speakers are not working and have no sound unless I connect a set of earphones. Resolved Question: What in the world just happened with my laptop?

All the applications running on my laptop froze up(Just Itunes and msn hotmail) and I hit ctrl-alt-delete, the windows button and clicked around in frustration like I usually do and than it did that thing where even the mouse freezes and makes a beeping noise every time you strike a key but than immediately after that the beeping noise became an EXTREMELY LOUD constant beep. It was SO loud it woke up everyone in my house. I tried holding down the power button to turn it off but that wouldnt turn it off for the first time since I bought this laptop years ago. The excruciatingly loud sound continued and I contemplated just breaking the thing but it finally turned off and I have just started it up again and its working like normal. This has never happened before though I have noticed the laptop has been freezing up completely lately which is actually very rare for this laptop. It is a Dell Inspiron e1705. more

Well I've had my laptop for about 3 and 1/3 years, Today I was using my laptop when the fans suddenly started going at full speed and about a minute later the laptop abruptly shut down. I tried to restart it by pushing the power button but all that happened was the power light flickered and the hard drive light flickered as well. I also heard the hard drive click. This happens everytime I try and start up the computer. Things that I have done include: take out battery, unplug power cord, and I also opened it up to make sure everything was connected and nothing looked bad (I've taken apart and fixed many computers so I know what I'm doing, but not laptops). Still doesn't work. Any suggestions would be appreciated, right now I think it's the motherboard, but I could be wrong. I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 and when I turned it on about 10 minutes ago, a small box popped up above the toolbar and said "Your battery will charge, but the battery is reaching the end of it's life." and I asked someone in my family about it and she told me that I probably would need to replace the battery. Voting Question: Dell laptop blue screen stop error?

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705, only had it for about 9 months but I recieved it second hand from a friend. All was working fine with it until yesterday I'm just doing my usual internet routine and I get a message from my anti-virus saying I got a virus, and it ended up being the one that installs a fake anti-virus program into my computer, I forget what it's called. Anyway, I did a virus scan and it told me it needed to restart in order to finish, so I did and that's when I got a blue screen saying that windows didn't start to prevent damage to my computer, and that I should run chkdsk to find any HD problems, or remove anti-virus programs, well that's basically the gist of it, I don't remember exactly what it said, I can get that information if needed though. And the code at the end of the message was: 0x00000024 (0X001902FE, 0XBA4F3380, 0XBA4F307C, 0X89D12805) I also get the black screen telling me windows couldn't start or something and it gives me the options to run in safe mode, start windows normally, or revert to the most recent settings that worked. I've clicked on all those and it still takes me to the blue screen. because of that I can't get into what I need to to run chkdsk or to remove my anti-virus. I've also tried to do a full blown system restore which didn't work. I managed to get into the setup/BIOS stuff to run all those system tests, they all passed except for a few tests that kept coming up with errors saying there was an unrepairable error or the media is copyright protected. It kep coming up over and over and over so eventually I cancelled the tests that was giving me the errors or I would have been there forever. All the other tests passed, but it didn't resolve my problem. I've also tried reseating my RAM cards but that also didn't do anything. I don't have a Windows XP recovery CD, and I don't have a floppy disk drive to use one of those. Am I totally screwed or is there something I can do to fix this?I thought I said this, I can't do a system restore, I've tried and it goes back to the blue screen. And I can't re-install windows because I don't have a disk to do so. more

i have dell inspiron e1705 Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz 1.66GHz 2.00 GB of RAM TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L532B i cant burn dvds anymore. i used to burn movies all the time. i have already burned 10 movies (family) movies* and it has always worked. now i cant burn dvds anymore - unable to write to disc- i also had a problem burning cds from windows media player but when i try itunes to burn music onto cds it works i have xilisoft avi to dvd converter it has always worked and now it doenst burn dvds anymore it will start burning and finish but when i play it on my dvd player it wont play or even read disc like it was blank or corrupted on my past dvds i have burned when i put them into my laptop the laptop will read video_ts and audio_ts but now the dvds come up blank do i need another dvd burner- i hvae not made updates at all or installed anything to stop this this laptop is just for burning movies and downloading music thats it more
