Resolved Question: Help wiping Dell 1705 laptop?

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 and I am trying to wipe it because its cluttered, a lot of things won't uninstall and it's slow. I know that at the blue dell bar screen when you first turn it on, you can do Ctrl F11 because I've done that before but this laptop is different. When you first turn it on, the big Dell loading screen pops up and loads. Then, instead of the BIOS screen, I guess its called, this wierd screen pops up EVERY time that says "please select the operating system to start:" It gives me two options. Both options say "Windows XP Media Center Edition". I press one and it starts windows normally. So where can I possibly do the Ctrl F11 and if I can't how else can I wipe it? more

Resolved Question: Laptop issues, what should I do?

I recently acquired a used Dell E1705/9400 and everything was and is in working order. However, the sound is a bit perplexing: I have sound whenever I connect a set of earphones but whenever I disconnect them I have no sound via the external speakers. In other words, the external speakers are not working and have no sound unless I connect a set of earphones. I reinstalled windows, reinstalled all drivers and checked all possible configurations pertaining to audio and with no avail. I still have no sound. Any help would be greatly appreciated. more

Resolved Question: What in the world just happened with my laptop?

All the applications running on my laptop froze up(Just Itunes and msn hotmail) and I hit ctrl-alt-delete, the windows button and clicked around in frustration like I usually do and than it did that thing where even the mouse freezes and makes a beeping noise every time you strike a key but than immediately after that the beeping noise became an EXTREMELY LOUD constant beep. It was SO loud it woke up everyone in my house. I tried holding down the power button to turn it off but that wouldnt turn it off for the first time since I bought this laptop years ago. The excruciatingly loud sound continued and I contemplated just breaking the thing but it finally turned off and I have just started it up again and its working like normal. This has never happened before though I have noticed the laptop has been freezing up completely lately which is actually very rare for this laptop. It is a Dell Inspiron e1705. more

Voting Question: Dell Inspirion E1705 Laptop Help!?

Well I've had my laptop for about 3 and 1/3 years, Today I was using my laptop when the fans suddenly started going at full speed and about a minute later the laptop abruptly shut down. I tried to restart it by pushing the power button but all that happened was the power light flickered and the hard drive light flickered as well. I also heard the hard drive click. This happens everytime I try and start up the computer. Things that I have done include: take out battery, unplug power cord, and I also opened it up to make sure everything was connected and nothing looked bad (I've taken apart and fixed many computers so I know what I'm doing, but not laptops). Still doesn't work. Any suggestions would be appreciated, right now I think it's the motherboard, but I could be wrong. Thanks in advance!I am sure it is not the battery cause I used to be able to run without the battery and I can't even do that. more

I have a Dell Inspiron E1705 and when I turned it on about 10 minutes ago, a small box popped up above the toolbar and said "Your battery will charge, but the battery is reaching the end of it's life." and I asked someone in my family about it and she told me that I probably would need to replace the battery. I have a Dell Inspiron E1705, only had it for about 9 months but I recieved it second hand from a friend. All was working fine with it until yesterday I'm just doing my usual internet routine and I get a message from my anti-virus saying I got a virus, and it ended up being the one that installs a fake anti-virus program into my computer, I forget what it's called. Anyway, I did a virus scan and it told me it needed to restart in order to finish, so I did and that's when I got a blue screen saying that windows didn't start to prevent damage to my computer, and that I should run chkdsk to find any HD problems, or remove anti-virus programs, well that's basically the gist of it, I don't remember exactly what it said, I can get that information if needed though. And the code at the end of the message was: 0x00000024 (0X001902FE, 0XBA4F3380, 0XBA4F307C, 0X89D12805) I also get the black screen telling me windows couldn't start or something and it gives me the options to run in safe mode, start windows normally, or revert to the most recent settings that worked. I've clicked on all those and it still takes me to the blue screen. because of that I can't get into what I need to to run chkdsk or to remove my anti-virus. I've also tried to do a full blown system restore which didn't work. I managed to get into the setup/BIOS stuff to run all those system tests, they all passed except for a few tests that kept coming up with errors saying there was an unrepairable error or the media is copyright protected. It kep coming up over and over and over so eventually I cancelled the tests that was giving me the errors or I would have been there forever. All the other tests passed, but it didn't resolve my problem. I've also tried reseating my RAM cards but that also didn't do anything. I don't have a Windows XP recovery CD, and I don't have a floppy disk drive to use one of those. Am I totally screwed or is there something I can do to fix this?I thought I said this, I can't do a system restore, I've tried and it goes back to the blue screen. And I can't re-install windows because I don't have a disk to do so. more

Voting Question: Why cant i burn dvds anymore but can burn cds?

i have dell inspiron e1705 Genuine Intel(R) CPU T2300 @ 1.66GHz 1.66GHz 2.00 GB of RAM TSSTcorp DVD+-RW TS-L532B i cant burn dvds anymore. i used to burn movies all the time. i have already burned 10 movies (family) movies* and it has always worked. now i cant burn dvds anymore - unable to write to disc- i also had a problem burning cds from windows media player but when i try itunes to burn music onto cds it works i have xilisoft avi to dvd converter it has always worked and now it doenst burn dvds anymore it will start burning and finish but when i play it on my dvd player it wont play or even read disc like it was blank or corrupted on my past dvds i have burned when i put them into my laptop the laptop will read video_ts and audio_ts but now the dvds come up blank do i need another dvd burner- i hvae not made updates at all or installed anything to stop this this laptop is just for burning movies and downloading music thats it more

Voting Question: Can you help me with my Dell Inspiron e1705 (monitor sleep/hibernation issues)?

My wife has a three year old Dell Inspiron e1705 laptop, recently it has picked up the habit of staying on for a short while and then the screen just goes dead. I can still see the LEDs going, can hear the audio working (i.e. programs are still working normally) and I can hear the HDD spinning when it needs to. It's just the screen that decides it's had enough every time. One work around has been to close and re-open the actual lid, but this is far from ideal. I've ran virus scanners over and over and there's nothing left in there. I'm a Mac user so I'm out of ideas. Anyone? Or is it just old hardware and it's had it now?*(power manager has it set to go off after 30 mins, it does it in about 5 or when it feels like) more

I've been trying to connect my Xbox 360 elite to my Dell Inspiron E1705 for awhile now. I thought it was as simple as connecting the ethernet cord from the Xbox to the laptop, but that doesnt seem to be the case. The connection stops when ever the xbox can't seem to find the ip address, and when ever I try to repair the connection from my laptop, it always says unable to renew ip address. PLEASE HELP!!! I'm faced with a problem, I have a e1705 inspiron (Dell) and I want to upgrade the video card. I did a little research and found that a lot of laptops cannot have their video card upgraded/removed to install a new video card. I tried restoring to a previous point but it appears there are no dates to restore to. It also doesnt work if i put head-phones or anything in. I currently own a Dell Inspiron E1705 (also known as 9200) I have had it a few years and I love the laptop but I am coming to the stage where I want to upgrade it. I just replaced the 100gb hard drive with a 500gb I ordered some more RAM (I had 2 x 1gb now going to 2 x 2gb) but I worry about my processor speed. I have a 1.73 GHz dual core intel processor T2250 and as far as I can find online the only upgrade available is a T7600 which would give me 2.33 GHz dual core. How much difference do you think this will make to my computers performance? Is it really worth it ? I run programs such as the Adobe Master Suite on the laptop. The cheapest price I can find for this processor is $200 online. (If you find one cheaper that would be cool too!) What do you think ? more

Resolved Question: How do I fix my sound on my laptop?

I opened up my dell inspiron e1705 to find out that the pins that connect my headphone and mic jack to the sound card have been completely disconnected. Now, the only time my sound works is if i plug in headphones and push the jack upwards, which then pushes the jack more firmly against the board as to connect them. The pins are so tiny that I don''t believe I am able to solder them with my soldering tools. Btw, my laptop speakers don't work as well. Does the disconnected pins mean that there is an open circuit which is why my laptop speakers don't work? Is there any other way to fix this besides replacing my whole motherboard?This laptop is about 3-4 years old. My warranty is waay past due. They won't help me for free. =( more

I have a Dell Inspiron e1705. I have had it for about 5 years now. But My warranty has been up for about 3 years now. It was fine not having a warranty when all I had to do was replace a ac adapter but now I think maybe my LCD screen broke?. First off I have replaced the motherboard twice. The battery about 5 times. The LCD screen about 3 years ago right before it went off warranty. And after it went off warranty I have replaced the AC adapter twice. I googled the price of the laptop screen and it said about $199.95 for a dell inspiron e1705 17 in. laptop LCD screen. I'm going to have to pay the shipping and for the workers to actually fix it and buy the screen soo Im thinking it might be around 300-400$???. This computer was $1500 when I bought it. Should I even bother trying to get it fixed. Cause I don't want it to keep breaking. But I will never buy another dell. I can't afford to keep getting it fixed. I can turn my laptop on. I've got a Dell Inspiron E1705 and I want to buy more RAM. I've got one gig now (two 512 meg chips) and I'm hoping to buy two 1gig chips (the max supported by this laptop). My question is this: Is it easy enough for me to change the RAM myself? Is there somewhere online I can go to see exactly how to do this? Resolved Question: Squeaky hinges on a Dell inspiron laptop?

I have an Inspiron e1705, so it'll be...3 years old next June. The computer itself is fine, it's a beast, it's survived many a fall without much as my CD-ROM drive being a little loose, but not noticeable. Only thing is, my hinges squeak REALLY loudly when I open or close the laptop. Depending on the weather the sound will go down a little, but mostly it's a loud squeak like you're in a haunted house. Now, I'm out of warranty so is this a problem, or just something that comes with its age? more

Resolved Question: How do I get sound when connecting my Laptop to my TV w/ a DVI Cable?

Help! I've been trying to connect my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop to my Toshiba LCD HD TV, but I can't seem to get both sound and video working at once. I connected the video using a DVI cable connected from my laptop to my TV's PC port, and I am able to get video when the input on my tv is set to "PC". I also have one of those wires to connect audio, that connects into the laptops headphone jack and then splits off into the white and red jacks for the TV. My problem is, when I plug these into the tv's audio input, I have to have my TV's input set to "Video 2" to hear the sound, but the video is on "PC" mode... so I can't do both at once. There is an input on the back of my TV that says "PC/HDMI 1 audio", and I assume that this is the logical place for these wires to go so that both sound and video will work on "PC" input mode, but there is still no sound....I'm not sure what else to try... help!! more

I just bought the Sims 3 and at first it worked fine while I was making a sim but now it freezes after a couple of minutes of playing it. I have a Dell Inspiron E1705. The game freezes and then the screen goes black. When i try to close it, my screen looks like it magnified everything and the colors are messed up. Then I have to turn the laptop off manually. Voting Question: Why is my windows vista barely opening?

Okay so, it's been a pretty big problem lately, its a DELL inspiron e1705. When I turn on the laptop, it will get to the log in screen, I'll sign in as the admin on the laptop, and lately, once every 10 times after a good 5-10 minute wait my desktop will show up, the other times its blank with just a mouse. I've tried scanning for viruses but norton, mcafee can't start, and my internet explorer mozilla and safari won't open, but AIM WORKS. ( which is weird, because I changed my router password but I can still sign on to aim) I've tried to restore it, add extra RAM memory, everytime i try to open network connections it will freeze, windows task manager won't open for the .exe problem. My last option was the reformat. Guess what.. It didn't work. Maybe I'm using the wrong CD, but it is the windows XP anytime upgrade to vista. I tried to partition all my files, but while it was restarting.. it came to the log off screen and didn't ever restart. The laptop will not shut down unless i press and hold on the power button. This is driving me crazy ask away for details but I'm not the greatest at this sort of stuff. SOMEONE help me out =) more

I recently purchased the Sims 3, and downloaded it to my Dell Inspiron E1705 laptop, at first things were working okay, but now I'll put the disk in, load the game, play for about 5-10 minutes and then the game will close itself. It doesn't save anything that I have done. It just closes. There's nothing that has popped up either. So I thought that maybe too many programs were running in the background and I closed down the ones I wasn't using, but it's still doing it. This has been a long process and I am so sick of downloading things and having them not work! HELP ME PLEASE! I received the family laptop(DELL inspiron E1705) after my whole family got new macbooks. So since only one user page(previously named Cullen) on the laptop had an internet that worked(idk why), I decided to delete all of the other users. When the page that came up that said if I wanted to keep the files on the users that I was deleting I didn't think anything of it so I said no. I thought the files that I had saved on Cullen into my old file would automatically save because I have only used Cullen as a user. But they didn't save and I needed my file! I realize now that I should have said I wanted to keep the file. Then I tried to retrieve the document on word that I needed by going to system restore. But as the computer was restarting, the screen went blue(SYSTEM FATAL ERROR) and I had to turn it off by pressing the power button. I turned it back on and the system restore said it failed because of an interruption(the fatal error). I can't seem to get rid of the blue screen to finish the system restore and try to get my document back! I need it! I have downloaded Perfect Optimizer to detect and repair the problem, but it said that I had to get the full version to fix it and I don't want to pay to do that. I NEED HELP! Voting Question: Portable power to my laptop?

I would like to know where I can buy a portable battery pack to power my laptop (Dell Inspiron E1705) because my battery has been dead (won't even hold a charge anymore and won't recharge), but I don't have the funds to buy a new battery from Dell or any other site. I also cannot use a soldering iron, yet, because I don't have a kit. It needs to be less than $100. My price range is $20 to $75, minus shipping for online sites. Resolved Question: I have this problem with MediaDirect on my 04' Dell Inspiron E1705..Does nayone know how to fix this?

This is the serious problem I ever had with my Dell. For some reason, when I try to turn on the laptop, it goes into Media Direct automatically and I can never get it to go back to Windows anymore, I got it to go there once, but once I put it into hibernate mode and turned it back on, it went straight to media direct. Sometimes I can't even turn it on without pressing the mediadirect button. I looked it up on google and heard it could happen by pressing the media direct button when it's off. I don't know for suer what happened, but is there anyone with any knowledge on how to solve this this? more

Resolved Question: What is wrong with my SD/MMC-MS/Pro driver on my Inspiron E1705?

I insert my SanDisk memory stick in the slot, but it is not being read at all. I've done this plenty of times and the result is always the same: no response. It stopped working after my laptop started acting weird (I think it was virus related). Since then, I had my laptop reset back to factory settings, but still, the driver doesn't work. I'd ask Dell, but they're giving me such a hard time. Can anyone assist me at all with this issue? more

I have heard and read that leaving your laptop plugged in all the time damages the battery and makes it's life diminish faster. I was wondering if there was a cover you could buy to go in place of the battery so I can take it out when I am using ac power. I have a lenovo Y530 and a Dell Inspiron E1705. more
