Open Question: Quality Laptops for College next year?

I'm not sure which laptop I should get for college next fall. Here's some of the things I'm looking for: The most demanding program I run on my current desktop is Flight Sim X which can take up quite a bit of memory, however, other than this I don't plan on gaming THAT much. I'm looking for performance and my price range is unlimited for the time being. Some portability would be nice since I'm gonna be carrying this thing all over UT's campus next fall. Some of the laptops I've been looking at are all three Alienware laptops (mainly the m11 and the m15, the m17 is apparently huge). I've also looked a little at the XPS's and the Adamo. Yes I am a bit partial to Dell mainly because I live in Austin haha. I've also looked at Asus a little. If you have any opinions on these or if you have any other laptops that I should look at let me know.I'm buying the computer in a few months max so no there won't be anything revolutionary coming out more

Hi. I'm going to start college this year & am searching for a laptop that has the most GB and great harddrive that can store a lot of stuff for a not so expensive price. Open Question: I'm looking for a quality graphics card, but I don't want to spend a lot. Any suggestions?

Up until now, I've just been using the original graphics card that came with my Dell Inspiron 1520 laptop. However, I upgraded to Windows 7, and tried to run Sims 3, and it says my graphics card doesn't meet the requirements. I have no idea what my current graphics card is (since I am pretty much computer illiterate) and I'd like to purchase a new one so I can run Sims 3. What are some good graphics cards that I can buy for a reasonable price? Any suggestions as to a specific brand, or something that meets the requirements for Sims 3 and isn't ridiculously expensive?So, basically, what you're saying is I'm SOL on this one, eh? Unless my laptop just happens to be one of the 2% with replaceable graphics cards. But I don't have that kind of luck. Is there anything else I could do that can enable me to play Sims 3? Okay, so I'm going to college in August. My mom has offered me to buy a laptop, and since we just sold our old car, we have quite a bit of money to do so. I'd like to keep the price under $2000, though. So, obviously I need one for college work, but I'm also gonna be playing a ton of games on it. I want a laptop that can run smoothly with the latest games, have a decent amount of battery life (4 hours or so), and isn't 5 thousand pounds. So I was thinking something with 4GB of Ram, at least 300 GB on the harddrive, and processing speed of at least 2GHz. After that, I have no idea what to look for. Resolved Question: Why cannot Dell price Desktops more competitively for India?

One can buy a fabulous laptop for a reasonable amount from Dell. Then, why cannot a desktop also be priced more competitively? One only pays for the components in a Dell Computer, and the freight, if one buys from the website. The cost of the components should be heavily subsidized. I refer to the i7 processor. If Dell purchases so many i7 processors, and so many McAfee anti-virus packages, then why are they not purchased by Dell at a heavily subsidized price, from the producers? True, that every component has an additional tax, but it is not stipulated, that the latest processors will be taxed more, than older processors. The taxes are the same for older, and new generation processors. The same for the other components of a PC. I am looking forward to buying a top spec PC from Dell, at a reasonable price in the future. more

I had a compaq pressario f700 maufatcured by HP and it started acting funny right before the warranty ended and i failed to do anything about it. I am looking at a dell inspiron 1545 feom sams club. I perfer to buy from there if possible they have longer warranty service plans. I mainly use my comp for myspace, facebook, yahoo and myspace messengers, youtube, and usual looking up stuff like for vacations etc. I dont really use it for games unless i play yahoo or pogo games. Voting Question: I need a new laptop, Intel I7 vs. I5?

I'm in need of a new laptop and it has to have the horsepower to last for at least 5-6 years. My Dell Inspiron 9300 is going on 5.5 years and the screen is just beginning to get those annoying lines on it.I only had to replace the HDD at 3 yrs and a couple of replacement batteries. Expected maintenance... Unless convinced otherwise, it will probably be a Dell again. HP has been a headache when i used to work at a University help Desk. I've heard good things about ASUS but don't see a lot of warranty on them. But I'm open to suggestions, if supported by fact. I prefer Intel and am looking at either the I5 or I7 chipset. The I7's are still pushing a 15" machine over $1200. Config: 15", 4+gb RAM at 1033+, 500gb 7200rpm, 720p+ screen, 512mb NVidia, 802.11n, backlit keyboard for taking notes in dark classrooms, blue tooth, 8hr battery (9 cell for dell)) I need to stick with 15" as weight is an issue. It should be a decent multimedia machine that can serve all around purposes. Not looking for gaming performance. Is the I7 worth waiting for? Performance and cost wise over the I3 or I5 or say a P7450 or P8700. What is on the horizon that may drive CPU prices down? Recommendations? I mostly play Guild Wars and currently have an HP, but I can't stand the lag anymore. I'm lucky if I can play at a steady 19FPS. So with this in mind I wanted to get a decent 15 inch laptop for college that can play some online games and not lag like crazy. I LOVE the mac OSX and the design and all the programs that come with it.... but the specs on this machine are way lower than the ones I could get on the Dell... I would like to play games on it like Call of Duty MW2 and GTA iv... and i know how to use bootcamp on mac so thats not a problem... but the quad core processor on the dell that i could get really is pulling me in and so is the fact that i can get 4GB ram, 500GB HD, ATI mobility radeon HD 4570 1 GB, all for the price of the macbooks 4GB ram, 320 GB HD NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB shared w/ main memory... Which one do you recommend? Is Mac OSX really worth not having the better specs? Will these specs even make a difference while gaming on low/ medium settings on GTA IV or other graphic/ memory intensive games?? I play games a lot... which one would be better? Voting Question: Which is better, Toshiba or Vaio's?

Im pretty new to the whole laptop thing, Ive been doing some research and have been turned off to HP's and Dell's do to reviews. I've came down to a Toshiba Satellite or the new Vaio E series that will be coming out this week.. The only major difference is the price between the two, and the color. I wanted a Macbook Pro 17' in. and didn't get any good feedback thus far so I've been looking at the Dell Studio 17' laptop. I see some potential in it, yet I haven't fully came to terms on if I want to buy it. I currently own a Dell Latitude D610, and I must say.. I hate it. Ok, Should I ask for a new computer or should I not? Details below!!! =D I have a computer that's 4 years old maybe five I forget. Its had a few issues through time is a dell dimension 5150. Sometimes it would shut down and it always at least 1 time to over 3 or 4 times does that stupid 'end now' behavior. It annoys me out of my mind. But, I get annoyed at nearly everything but oh well. So to get to the point- I wanted to ask my parents if I could get a lap top. I have done some research and I found so laptop on best buys website that got a few five star reviews at a great price at about $399.00 so really $400.00. I have enough in my bank account to buy it and all. And my birthday is coming up. And I wanted to ask my mom and dad, but my dad would be hardest to talk to. So I was thinking, he always wants to take my monitor and put it in our home office. (some people get confused, its a room with a computer, that's all) my monitor is bigger that's why. And I would say we can put my monitor in there. Then in our basement- we have thousands of computers as you can see- I could put the computer its self- the one down there doesn't really work and I think it still has dial up! So we can put mine down there and give the old one to those toxic waste dumps or where ever the computers go to. Do you think it would work? I just feel bad because I have a computer. Voting Question: upgrade hard drive in a laptop?

So I'm planning to get a laptop, most likely a dell m6400 or m6500. These laptops have two and three hard drive bays respectively. The price for upgrading them through dell is a bit higher than i think it should be. My plan was to get non-dell HDDs that are less expensive and put them in these bays instead of getting the dell upgrades. Here are my questions 1) Is this even possible? I was thinking that perhaps there was a proprietary case surrounding the hard drive that would allow it to fit snug in the bay. 2) If it is possible, would i be able to take any hard drive with the same diameter and connector and plug it in? 3) Would anyone happen to know the size and type of connection used on the m6400/m6500 workstations? more
