Is it possible to use a server from a network rack as a personal computer? The server is an HP ProLiant that currently has no operating system. The device appears to have a cd or dvd drive built in (from photo) but if not... how would I install an operating system? It appears to be dirt-cheap comparable to a tower or laptop PC and has amazing specs so would like to look into this ASAP. Any help on this is greatly appreciated.Thank you for the quick responses. At the rate things were going, we should have such things as: 1. A dishwasher that is truly silent and washes dishes in 45 seconds. Now, a dishwasher works no better and is no quieter than something from the 1960s. Similar for all wash machines - clothes washers and driers. No progress whatsoever. 2. More trips to moon, and Mars should have been conquered decades ago. Instead, NASA is just a social experiment, political tool, and popularity contest. 3. Dirt-cheap but high quality Electric cars or cars that run on urine or garbage. 4. All kinds of robots and automated machines (things a lot better than "Roombas" The pattern i see is that our technology focuses on electronics, and phones and of course computers but anything that people actually use with their hands or things that are beyond a stupid laptop and stupid gadgets are neglected. My laptop battery does not hold charge. I purchased a new battery and it does not charge too. So the problem is not with the battery. Can work on AC adapter - so the problem is not the adapter. So what can the problem be? if the problem is the contact places of the notebook with the battery ---- how can it be cleaned? I tried to clean but it did not work. If the problem is not the dirt - how can I replace the part that charges the battery --- is it a part of the mainboard? is that part charges the battery sold separately? As you all know - laptop main boards are very expensive and not the route worth trying. I would try to purchase a mainboard that is faulty cheaper with a hope that charger unit is working. Hi, I have come across the shopping website, where in they say that we can watch 8000 TV channel worldwide, just by using the internet connection. They say that we just need is windows Media player or Real player and it would work on Dial up/broadband internet. Is that true? Can you please advise if this can be bought, because it is dirt cheap. Resolved Question: Is there any way to boost Wifi reception on my Acer Aspire One netbook?

If I want to download anything, it has to be done from my car through wifi since I only have dial-up at home, and I have found a few public wifi spots that are great, but the signal strength is low, and I have to set the laptop on the dash to get good strength. If I get a usb wifi adapter, so I can stick it to my sunroof and keep the laptop on the passenger seat, will that get much better reception? I was thinking about even getting a tiny 4" dish style adapter so I can aim at the sources and get super reception strength, about $60 on eBay. Would those offer much improvement over the Acer Aspire One's built-in wifi? By the way, it uses Windows XP. I cannot get anything faster than dial-up where I live in the countryside, and live in a dead zone for the ATT and Verizon 3G internet adapters... so they only run 3x faster than my dirt cheap dial-up, so it's not worth the cost, and the satellite stuff has far too many bad reviews. I'm just looking to improve my wifi reception for my laptop. It does not have a PC Card slot on the side, so USB is the only adapters it can use. more

I rarely go on the internet, basically i use it for emails and myspace. However, i do use it for video games. luckily i am only looking to play WOW and city of villains/heroes so it doesn't have to be tricked out. i need a current laptop that can play both these games without any lag. i will put the graphic qualities on medium or min. i looked around a bit and everyone was trying to sell me gaming laptops, which are way to expensive. i need a regular laptop tht will play the two games i mentioned before and have internet access, barely anything else, but leave some extra space anyway. Resolved Question: Computer guys I need your help? ?

I bought Acer Extensa 5420 with a cracked screen for dirt cheap. I replaced the screen and the lcd Inverter. The image is very very dark, I have to use a flashlight to see the picture on the screen. Also the i plug an external Monitor and the computer works fine I also plug the lcd into another laptop and the backlight works. I ruled out that its not the backlight, inverter, or the video card. My last thing to do is replace the cables. What else should i do. Im so mad right now because i cant this screen to work. I know it cant be the motherboard because im getting a perfect image on the screen with no light!Can it the motherboard even if its giving my an image on the screenCan it be the Motherboard even if I am getting an image on the screen?I turned the brightness up the whole way and it doesnt light up. the old screen was shot with a bb gun and the vidoe card does work because plug it into external display and it works fine. more

Resolved Question: How can i get real internet out here? I'm stuck with dial-up.?

At my house, all I have is dial-up. I live on a dirt road in AL, in a small boring community. Cable is not available, so we have DirecTv. DSL is available in the area, but it's not actually available on the dirt road where I live. They say that there's not enough people living on the dirt road, so they said they have us on the expansion list. I know no one's ever gonna move out there though, so why do they even bother to have an expansion list. It's not fear to me that a gas station, post office, or residence up the road can get DSL, but the phone company can't come out one more half mile down the road and hook us up. Satellite is too expensive. My grandmother has DSL. I just happened to have a spare DSL modem, so I programed her password and username in it and made sure it worked before I left her house. It worked fine. I took it to my house and tried plugging it in my phoneline just to see if it would actually work because I do know that you can use the same dial-up account from anywhere with an active phoneline, so why not try it with DSL only you have to have the modem and the signal has to be running into your phoneline. I hooked the modem up and tried it and all I got was a blinking DSL light. A friend of mine has a laptop with built in wifi, but he tried it and it don't work out there either because no one has internet of course. I would try wireless internet service, but it wouldn't work much better then the cellphones do because I can't even walk out side and text with my phone. I have nextel and my phone doesn't work at all where I live. AT&T/Cinguler almost works, but you can't even hold service long enough for a call to go through. You're lucky to be able to climb a tree or something and be able to text. How could I get internet service? Is there a satellite service as cheap as DSL? Wildblue and Huesnet cost 60-70 bucks a month for their lowest package which is only 256kbps. That's the same speed my grandmother has with DSL and it only cost about 25-30 buck a month. more

my freind is dirt poor. literally so poor all he can afford to eat is rommen noodles. so buying new parts or taking it to a shop is completely out of the question. his laptop ( a crappy old compaq armada m700 ) which he recently got for very cheap from another friend now has broken hinges. they are completely worn out and have no resistance whatso ever, so he has to lean it against something to hold the screen up. does anyone know a cheap way to fix it. we know quite a bit about pc computers so we have no clue what to do about it more

Most of the cases I've found that are Pro-specific look cheap, and the ratings say that dirt gets in between the case and laptop. i plan on buying an open mac (a 400 dollar computer that supports linux and macs in addition to windows) and i am having trouble deciding between ubuntu 8.04 and leopard. now i have ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop which i plan on upgrading in 8 days when ubuntu 8.04 gets its stable release and goes out of beta but for my open mac i didnt know what os to put on it. my biggest concern is looks i love eye candy on an OS (the one thing i actually like about vista which is also on my laptop...it's a dualboot set up) now i haven't really tried or seen 8.04s beta and i have to know is it near how nice leopard looks cuz leopard is jaw dropping. still next to looks cost is my biggest concern and while the open mac is dirt cheap (and shockingly powerful it's on par with most computers costing $800 to $1000) is money. i know that if i buy a mac i'm going to have to pay more money for software compared to my ubuntu which is using 100% freeware. either way i need to know which to go with. help please. more

Resolved Question: My internet is complete garbage, I have some questions?

I have Bell Sympatico, my dad works for Bell Mobility so we get our DSL for dirt cheap. It's a 3 or 4 MB connection, and during the morning and afternoon, and usually the evening it's very fast and nice. But virtually every single night around 9 p.m and onwards, it turns into complete garbage until after midnight. DSL isn't affected by traffic like cable is, so it's not a problem of too many people nearby using the internet at the same time. Also, it not only becomes dial-up speed, but disconnects frequently. I can't even play games during this period because every 5-10 minutes I get a connection interrupted message and booted. We contacted the company a few times and it's useless, they refuse to believe that the problem is on their end, and it just gets answered at a call centre where the douchebags read solutions off of a list. I'm just wondering, is there any chance that this is on our end? I am 99% that it isn't, as my last computer was affected, as is my dad's work laptop.BUT, if I do join games during this time, my ping is what it'd be normally. But browsing the net and such there is noticeable lag, not to mention the disconnects.In response to Greg, this is happening every single night. We restart the modem and router once a week usually. It isn't those. And if it were, it wouldn't happen the same time every day and then go away, only to come back at the same time later.Human Warrior: Trust me, I'm not that much of a noob haha. I can tell the difference between downloading and a faulty internet connection. Azureus is closed and hasn't been running since I booted last.My average download speed off of speed test is 4.3mb/s, right where it should be. more

I know someone will say "Go ahead and spend the extra thousand or two and get a good brand". I know that's what I should do but I can't. Period. Just can't. My only option if I want to get a child atv is to buy a cheap cheap one. If I find out they are ALL crappy junk piles then I will spend that money on maybe a laptop for Christmas. I have searched the internet and local shops and have found different size atv's ranging from $500.00-$1200.00. I understand you get what you pay for. If I could by the $3000.00 atv I would. Ive got a few laptops that are just FILTHY. I cleaned with alchohol, but theres still tons of dirt/hairs/crap inside. I took out the keyboards, removed all the letters, and ive been scrubing them with knapkins wet with alchohol. Its hard to get at some of this crap. And the motherboards are full of crap too! I was going to buy some compressed air cans but there expensive and apparently not reusable. It just hurts to have to spend money on air. Whats another good but cheap way? My family computer died after 7 years of using it, it had 128mb ram, 1.6ghz pentium 4, 20GB hard drive, 16MB video card, so it was slow. But that was what we needed, just for internet. I am looking for another computer just for surfing the web, not playing games or anything. And I still have a monitor, keyboard, speakers, mouse, etc. I just need the tower.
